Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Do people want more of a planning tab similar to quest #1? If so, I can work on one.

I'm still trying to figure out where the Dew Breaker works.

message 153: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Actually...I'm just going to start working on one and see how it goes.

message 154: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I finished my book. I put it down for Entrepreneurship [1 Book Required]
1. Financial Literacy-Business Owner:The Secret, Book & Scone Society~Jillian 9/10/19.

If we need to, I can move to Boy Scouts- cooking

message 155: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I added my book to the spreadsheet Quest #3

I added Medicine- Furiously Happy to the Quest #3 planning.

I'm not sure I filled them in right so feel free to fix any of my mistakes : )

I had to take the hard one : )

message 157: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments So...I have an attempt at a planning tab. I'm not sure if I should be breaking them up into smaller subgroups.

message 158: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Traci- I think it looks good.

message 159: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Devin- I’m thinking the Life Skills one is going to be hard to fill so that might be the best spot.

message 160: by Traci (new)

I'm having that issue with The Dew Breaker as well! Though they are interconnected stories.

message 161: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Chrissy - If you want to add any conditional formatting, go for it. That is not a skill of mine!

message 162: by Deborah (last edited Sep 10, 2019 08:30PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Trying to figure out where Where the Line Bleeds fits. I was thinking with bleeds it could be linked to First Aid under life skills? The book involved young men seeking jobs and one going into dealing drugs, so also maybe entrepreneurship (in a not girl scouts approved way)?

Edit to clarify that I did finish it today.

Where the Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward

message 163: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 539 comments So I finished Manhattans & Murder and I am not sure where it fits the best. Its a murder she wrote mystery so it would have fit best in Investigation but I think that one is is covered so I would say maybe:

Boy Scout Badges -Journalism spot as Jessica is doing the press tours promoting her new book and solving a murder. Or because it is a book about an author maybe under the Boy Scout spot of Reading?

message 164: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I am done with Me Talk Pretty One Day but I have no idea where this essay collection would fit. The only thing I can think of is the Boy Scouts Communication badge since the essays about him trying to communicate in France are hysterical!

message 165: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Ill be starting Good Me, Bad Me next. Probably looking at a Thursday finish. Just based on the synopsis, id say Law would work, but may find other options as i read.

message 166: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments It looks like we have placed 4 books in quest 3 and we have 3 books still to place

Me Talk Pretty One Day~Jill 9/10/19

Manhattans & Murder~Sarah 9/10/19

Come Find Me ~Samantha 9/10/19

I like First Aid. They said to be creative.

Also, my "Inside Government" has a dictatorship and some of the not so good things that come with a bad government, so not at all a scouts approved way!

I like it. I slotted it into communication on the spreadsheet, but it can also obviously be moved if you decide it should be somewhere else instead.

I noted the 3 options you stated. We can slot it into Investigation for now. Which of these specifics would you choose? Senses, Detective, Special Agent, Truth Seeker.

Unless I misunderstand, which, really, I should reread, we can slot in another to Investigation if we want as long as the specific is different.

message 170: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Samantha -
I just read the synopsis of your book and it sounds so interesting. Was it good? Was it creepy?

Any thoughts on a badge? From the synopsis, I'd guess space, astronomy, electronics, energy, family life, radio, but obviously just the synopsis might be totally throwing me off.

message 171: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I am going to finish Connections in Death tomorrow which would fit the STEM/Investigation badge.

Sarah | 539 comments Traci wrote: "Sarah wrote: "So I finished Manhattans & Murder and I am not sure where it fits the best. Its a murder she wrote mystery so it would have fit best in Investigation but I think that o..."

Well it I would say Detective, but if that one is claimed I would go with Truth Seeker since she is looking for the truth for most of the book.

Jillian | 2917 comments Traci wrote: "Unless I misunderstand, which, really, I should reread, we can slot in another to Investigation if we want as long as the specific is different.

That is how I'm reading it also. I marked Sarah's a Detective but we can switch it to Truth Seeker is someone else's book only works for Detective.

Come Find Me was enjoyable, not as creepy as I would have liked but overall a good YA mystery. I think Radio would be a good fit for it.

Kind of rushing this morning so didn't read everything carefully but will check in again later - I am hoping to finish Where Did You Go Bernadette as I drive around this morning.

Have a good reading day all!

message 175: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I had a pretty light reading day yesterday, which was in sync with everything else yesterday too. Hoping to get more in today. Unfortunately I'm not even half done with a long audiobook, but I should finish my next physical book today or tomorrow and can figure out something for a badge. I need to read more to figure out options though.

message 176: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I finished Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things and added to the spreadsheet under Boy Scout-medicine.

I'm going to start The Martian next. It will work for either Outdoor Girl Scout or Boy Scout though I'm thinking we will be done with this quest before I finish it.

message 177: by Perri (last edited Sep 11, 2019 12:19PM) (new)

Perri | 886 comments I finished The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss and put it as BS Badge of Family Life.

message 178: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I finished Where'd You Go, Bernadette but not sure what badge I would use - Maybe Robotics for the husbands job or Architecture for Bernadette. There is also a bit of an adventure so potentially outdoors but think that is a push. Anyone else who has read this have any thoughts on what badge this would work for?

message 179: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments I think architecture plays a pretty big part in the story?

Perri | 886 comments Alaina wrote: "Perri wrote: "Good morning! We're going like hot cakes, here. Yeah, I just keep them coming :)..."

Heller definitely has a staccato writing style, I'm sure's not for everybody. Hope you .like Sharp Objects more-not one I've read but I like reading on the dark side every once in a while :)

message 181: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Thanks Devin and Perri! I added to spreadsheet for Architecture.

message 182: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments I finished Chemistry on my way home. It doesn’t really fit any of the Girl Scout STEM badges, so I entered it on the spreadsheet for the Chemistry Boy Scout badge.

By the way, I really loved this book! It is an insightful and funny contemporary fiction, but the allusions are chemistry related instead of literary or religious. I don’t know if people who aren’t chemists would get as much out of it as I did. Has anyone else read it?

message 183: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Devin wrote: "Do you guys think that staying at a ski lodge counts as outdoors? It's a bit of a stretch and Dead Voices can be applied to other badges, but I know we need that one."

Hmmm...seems like a stretch, but they did say to be creative!

One of my short stories did have someone hiking up a mountain to a village, so we could also move Dew Breaker there if we want. It wasn't an overarching theme like "Inside Government" and wasn't an important story in the connected stories, but I'll X it as an option.

Sounds good.

Also, good job with the title scramble...I didn't even try.

message 185: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I should be complete Outdoors [1 Book Needed]
- Outdoor [Hiker, Camper, Trailblazing, Adventurer] tonight. I've been reading The Slippery Slope with my kids and did not think I would finish in time to count for the read a thon but I'm going to go ahead and read ahead and finish it tonight. It works for Hiker, Camper, & Adventurer. I will post back once I finish.

message 186: by Deborah (last edited Sep 11, 2019 08:19PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments If nothing else, "dew" is something that occurs outdoors in nature and us something one would encounter when camping, etc, right? Seems outdoors-ey to me! Edit: though i now see that one should be covered!

I haven't made much progress on my next book. I have had a headache slowing me down, but will keep plugging away!

message 187: by Sarah (last edited Sep 11, 2019 09:22PM) (new)

Sarah | 539 comments Ok I started and finished Evil Under the Sun today and honestly I am not sure where it fits in best.
At first glance it would fit in with Investigation but I am pretty sure we have that one covered. We could put it under Canoeing badge, they do talk a little about sailing and rowing in the book. We could also throw it into the Lifesaving boy scout spot or even the Theater spot as one of the main characters use to be an actress.

Oh if the spot isn't filled we could use it in the Outdoor one. They spend a lot of time outside on the beach, going for daily swims some of them do daily hikes around the island.

Way to go!

We currently have 3 spots open. Jillian was thinking she'd finish a book for the outdoors badge tonight. I'd say pick one of the other two (investigation other than detective or a boy scout) and make a note on the Quest #3 page of the other two badges that would work (outdoors and the one you don't pick). Then whoever finishes the next book can shift books if needed.

message 189: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments I’ll finish Where the Crawdads Sing tomorrow, and it would fit for outdoors as well as several different Boy Scout ones. Maybe others will beat me to it, though!

message 190: by Jillian (last edited Sep 11, 2019 10:22PM) (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I finished The Slippery Slope and will add it to the spreadsheet for outdoor.

If we need to, it can be moved to hiking under Boy Scouts.

message 191: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments I updated and switched the badge for Sarah's books. We just need one more book to complete quest 3, any open Boy Scout badge.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math [2 books needed]
1. Investigation [Truth Seeker] ~Manhattans & Murder~Sarah 9/10/19
2. Investigation [Detective] Evil Under the Sun~ Sarah 9/11/19

message 192: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I expect to finish Good Me, Bad Me by tonight which would work for law, though it seems likely someone will fill in the last slot before then. I'll update as soon as I finish.

message 193: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I finished Luck, Love & Lemon Pie.

Not sure the categories fit without pushing the creativity. It is about a family that has bad communication and a marriage that is falling apart and there is a lot of poker.

I was hoping it would be like The Coincidence of Coconut Cake and there would be a lot of food and cooking. But that was almost just left to a recipe at the back of the book. So would be a stretch to use cooking.
Creative ideas:
I feel like I wasted a lot of ENERGEY on it.
The main character was good at READING the players at her poker table
SPORT from wikipedia -
" Etymology
The word "sport" comes from the Old French desport meaning "leisure", with the oldest definition in English from around 1300 being "anything humans find amusing or entertaining".[8]

Other meanings include gambling and events staged for the purpose of gambling; hunting; and games and diversions, including ones that require exercise.[9] Roget's defines the noun sport as an "activity engaged in for relaxation and amusement" with synonyms including diversion and recreation.[10]"

Or could just use this book in the next quest :)

message 194: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Samantha, I think we could use cooking based on the cover. I think Chrissy is planning on finishing a book today and we could also save yours for the next quest. We should have sometime to figure it out. I don’t think quest 4 can be posted until Laura gets home from work this evening

message 195: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Perri could we switch you book, The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss, from family life to journalism? Then we could put Samantha's book, Luck, Love & Lemon Pie, under family life.

message 196: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I am happy to do what ever is best for the team and if we can't get a new quest until later might be easiest to wait and see if someone else has a better book.

message 197: by Traci (new)

My first thought was we can shift other books around, but I don't have time to figure it out right now, but then you did!

I like this idea.

message 198: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished Good Me, Bad Me for the law badge. I did add it to the spreadsheet before hitting refresh here, but do feel free to move it out if something else works. Great job, all! :) I'll keep an eye out for quest 4!

message 199: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Totally flexible! Wait are we done with this quest?

message 200: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2917 comments Thanks, Perri. You are right we finished before we needed to switch. We have Samantha's book ready to add to quest 4.
