I generally don't read horror or zombies and definitely avoid current 'biographies' by politicians trying to appear human :)

LOL!!! Cameron, do you think you should inform them, or are you going to see how long it'll last?? Btw, what's the name of the upside down book?Grace, I know, right? And they're probably all ghost written by people with hearts...
That just goes to show that no matter how badly a book is written, if it has enough graphic, just-for-the-sake-of-it sex, it will become a bestseller. You could write A-B-C-D-E, and so on through the entire book, but add some very graphic sex scenes, and it will end up on the New York Times list, and be made into a movie.
No thank you, I'll just be content where I am:)
Good grief. A case in point where an article title is absolute rubbish in my humble opinion. I think it's rather a weak article having read it and has absolutely nothing shocking about it at all. Stars turning down roles? Really? Because that NEVER happens does it? A-listers turn down roles all the time and have to live with terrible regret when they've made the biggest mistakes. Happens all the time!
A trilogy of books by an average author got picked up by a publisher ..... and the rest is history. There are a LOT of pornographic/graphic books out there yet hardly any of them have become bestsellers. James just got lucky with her timing tapping into a market when she did. The books struck a chord and I can see honestly see why and fair play to anyone for liking them. It's their business, their money, their choice.
Anyways.... just my opinion.

True Janet We all know that sex sells but not all books with sex in them graphic or not become bestsellers.I didn't really care for FSOG but if there had been some pirates in them I might have, lol.

Yeah baby:)
I think Amber was trying to point out an example of how badly written FSOG was, and yet it became a bestseller because of the erotica alone; the author can't write very well, but she can sure get the graphic scenes down. And I agree, whoever likes it, their right, their choice...
Groovy wrote: "I think Amber was trying to point out an example of how badly written FSOG was, and yet it became a bestseller because of the erotica alone; the author can't write very well, but she can sure get t..."I think it did so well because it was/is such a taboo subject especially in the U.S. where we are such prudes, lol. I went to visit my husband's family in NY when the book first came out. All of my sisters-in-laws were having a tizzy over that book. Geez…you would have thought they never had sex.
Lisa wrote: "Groovy wrote: "I think Amber was trying to point out an example of how badly written FSOG was, and yet it became a bestseller because of the erotica alone; the author can't write very well, but she..."LOL!!! Maybe not like that!
Akhlaq, I would look that up, but if I see erotica walking down the street, I cross to the other side:)
Groovy wrote: "I think Amber was trying to point out an example of how badly written FSOG was, and yet it became a bestseller because of the erotica alone; the author can't write very well, but she can sure get t..."That's precisely what I was trying to do, Groovy and let's not forget that the Twitlight Saga, of which FSOG was originally supposed to a fanfic about, was equally poorly written. I'm saying Twitlight Saga because the other version is ruder though just as accurate.
Lisa: PSML! I love it! "All of my sisters-in-laws were having a tizzy over that book. Geez…you would have thought they never had sex. "
That just proves your point of how prudish most of America really is. Jim Butcher's Marat headman Doroga put it best in Academ's Fury when he said to Count Bernard of Calderon (and Bernard's common law wife, the Cursor Amara): "Everything mates. Everything likes to mate. Only you Alerans pretend you don't." Substitute the word "Americans" for "Alerans" and you have 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999ad infinitum% of the American population accurately pegged.
Akhlaq: Not sure if I've ever been there but I'll take your word for it.

There's actually plenty of books that are filled with just that and are poorly rated because of it. If the story is just that I get bored and rate it poorly in reviews. The only people that may appeal to is erotica audience, although they usually want at least some semblance of story.
Lisa wrote: "Groovy wrote: "I think Amber was trying to point out an example of how badly written FSOG was, and yet it became a bestseller because of the erotica alone; the author can't write very well, but she..."I think you're right - there's not even any sex till after 100 pages or so, it's not that filled with it, it's mainly talk and complaining. I think it was taboo subject and the drama train that addicted people to it. Pure erotica has a lot more happening in the bedroom, which is why it's top labels are geared toward Romance and not erotica fiction.
I've read historical romances with a lot more sex in them, the old fashioned bodice rippers.
I think I have too, Erin. Re your remark: "I've read historical romances with a lot more sex in them, the old fashioned bodice rippers. "
Janet wrote: "As have I. There's some good stuff out there. Finding it is another thing! :)"I definitely agree with you there =)
Maggie wrote: "I dont typically like autobiographies."Hey Maggie:
I have a hard time with them, too. There is way too much "I" and "me" in them. I have been watching the Presidential debates on both sides and I swear that I am going to snap a gasket if I hear the words "I was a leader" (in given organization or movement), or "I championed that" (whatever project), "I was the first one to speak out on this", "I was the first one to introduce a bill" It was all I. Nobody else helped them. Really. I think that I need to go upheave my "synergies."
Janet wrote: "As have I. There's some good stuff out there. Finding it is another thing! :)"Hey Janet:
Leave no book unturned Weedhopper.
Groovy wrote: "LOL!!! Cameron, do you think you should inform them, or are you going to see how long it'll last?? Btw, what's the name of the upside down book?Grace, I know, right? And they're probably all ghos..."
Hey Groovy:
Can't really read the title since it's kind of behind the shoulder and head of whomever is speaking. I was not going to tell them, but wait and see how many Presidents it is upside down for. It has been upside down for both President Obama terms. Here's the funny thing though. You can definitely tell that the cleaning staff is dusting all of the books - including that one. I keep thinking that one day while dusting ... But, then again, maybe they are undocumented workers that cannot read?
Ha, ha…I found a new one and I will definitely pass. It's called Monster Porn…really.

LOL I see reviews of this in my feed. Some of my friends seek them out. I hadn't heard of it otherwise.

I'd probably read them just for the "WTF?" factor.
It may not be what I would read but I am just happy people are reading at all. It seems reading is becoming almost extinct. At least in real life it is. I know so few readers outside of libraries and reading forums/groups.
Lisa, that's what our elders said about TV heralding the death of the movie theater: "... becoming almost extinct. At least in real life it is."Yet, movie theaters STILL exist...and have NOT gone the way of the dodo!
Oh. Not sure I understand because that can happen in any genre and come out of nowhere without warning?! If you mean romance novels, I understand that.
Hhmmmmm. Depends in what context they're trolling. Some are highly destructive in some instances. Can't really tell anything from here .... but hey ho!
True. Even "Weird Al" says "I don't read SPAM and I never feed the trolls" or something like that in this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAGjZ...
I love reading and writing about suspense. Books that do not stretch my imagination, seldom get finished.
Groovy wrote: "LOL!!! Oh my goodness!!! This is interesting. Let me know if they ever turn it right side up."Amber Alert Groovy!
This is too funny. Someone on this list must be close to someone on the political channel with the upside down book that I was telling everyone about. Too funny. The book is suddenly right-side-up and freshly dusted. A spy lurks among us? Perhaps our list is aptly named.
Hey Amber.Oh, I watch this political news station (not Fox News) that conducts interviews with the guest in sort of an office library every now and then. There are bookshelves right behind the person that they are interviewing. Anyway, for several years - probably since Obama's first term, one of the books behind the guest over his left shoulder has always been upside down. I have watched countless interviews with the book in this position. It was even being dusted regulary with the other books. Anyway, I mentioned it on this thread for some reason, and Groovy has been having a good laugh about it. Anyway, mysteriously, after all of these years, the book is now right-side-up. Thus, perhaps, a spy lurks among us. It is/was just too funny, Amber.
Ah. I don't watch TV at home (because I can't afford cable/satellite) and even if I DID, I'd AVOID political channels like the bubonic plague.
Hey Amber:True enough. Many people do avoid these shows like the plague. It could have been Law and Order SVU or Grimm and it would have still been funny.
I don't enjoy erotica, fantasy (ones with pixies, elves and vampires), romance (the Regency period has definitely reached saturation point in my view) and anything containing extreme, gratuitous violence. Everything else is fine!
Throughout my life I have read a bit of everything, however I have not read any Erotica. Unless you count those dime store Harlequins found under my best friend's mother's bed when we were 10. ;). I tried to read 50 shades simply to have an "educated" opinion...only got to page 3. I am sorry lovers of this author but I found the writing style atrocious and never even made it to any "juicy" bits.
@Cath I do not have autobiographies adorning my shelves and yet I just finished reading a memoir/autobiography of Gloria Vanderbilt co-written with Anderson Cooper....it was surprisingly very good. Romance for romance sake I cannot get behind, however through in some actual true historical facts and I won't turn up my nose.
And so......round and round I go ending up where I began....willing to read just about anything. I guess I am indecisive.
