The Next Ship Home by Heather Webb
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and Webb brings the era to life. I rooted for Alma and Francesca to succeed. Reading their stories, I want to give homage to my ancestors who passed through Ellis Island. Their courage afforded my family a better life.

Next on my Shelf, Bloomsbury Girls.
I think most NetGalley reader/reviewers must be aware of the Buzz Books that are published seasonally.Buzz Books 2022: Spring/Summer has a long list of books coming out this year, and it includes excerpts from many. Authors range from winners of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes to debut authors new to the market. It's a great way to get a taste of what's out there.

4* for this mystery from Ms. Miranda. This book is also available on NetGalleyhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Blackout by Simon ScarrowI'm just over 60% through, and this is an excellent read so far. A few very minor spoilers including that will not ruin your reading enjoyment.
The suspense is very strong and multifaceted. In 1939 Germany, Criminal Inspector Schrenke is under dire pressure from the Head of Gestapo to solve a politically charged murder immediately with very personal threats. The murderer tracked Schrenke and his girlfriend to where he lives. As the murder is also a rapist, Schrenke worries about his girlfriend. Lastly, his girlfriend is the niece of Admiral Caranis, head of Abwehr, military intelligence, who starts out sympathetic and supportive of Schrenke, but he has just shown a cold side and possibly dangerous side. So far two of the three attacks were described in the voice of the murderer. While very edgy they were not in an objectionable manner. If you want to read a strong mystery, thriller, and suspenseful novel, I recommend this one!
This was a DNF for me at 40%, simply awful, gory, unbelievable and just simply not worth the time!

I finally get approved for a book from Berkley and it was a huge miss for me. Housebreaking

Oh no! I have this one too. It's disappointing because I have enjoyed some of her other books.
The Summer We Buried by Jody Gehrman. I am not a fan of the overused/unnecessary f-bomb and had concerns. However, the story had me hooked.
Turned out to be a nice surprise.
Here are my 4 star ~ better than expected comments!

This is a bright, appealing children's picture book that would be good for pointing out shapes and finding items from one page to the next. Chelsea O'Byrne is both author and illustrator, and it's lovely.
4★ My review of If I Were King with several of her illustrations
Two back-to-back average historical fiction reads. :/1. The Midwife by Tricia Cresswell - Begins so well, but goes steadily downwards.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
2. The Paris Network by Siobhan Curham - Gets the historical timeline well, but the contemporary timeline is boring.

Just finished this great debut novel

And this has been my problem also Rosh.!! Most historical fiction that I have tried recently has been either dry and boring, has too much romance that isn't an integral part of the story, or is another book about WWII. I used to read historical fiction almost exclusively but the great ones are hard to come by ;(
Disappeared by Laura Jarratt - a well-written drama with some great emotions.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Got to one of the one's I missed last summer. A great contemporary romance that wraps up a series I really enjoyed. That Deep River Feeling (Alaska Homecoming #3) by Jackie Ashenden

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center.
As I grew to care about Hannah and Jack, my opinion changed. The book needed that opening to fully appreciated Hannah's journey. Readers will realize that you can't judge a person or a book by its cover.

Love Grows Everywhere is a charmer of a small picture book by Barry Timms with some enormous ideas, wonderfully illustrated by Tisha Lee. Diversity and acceptance abound in glorious colour! I want to live there. 😊
5★ My review of Love Grows Everywhere with several of the illustrations
Jumping sharks and dropping mics by Gareth Carrol explains a lot of the idioms and phrases that have slipped into everyday English. Some I know and use, some not so much. Very entertaining.
4★ My review of Jumping Sharks, etc with several examples
Freedom Dues by Indra Zuno - a debut historical fiction work set in the 1730s. The author has done fabulous research but wish she had balanced the issues a bit. This was almost like misery porn. Mentally draining.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished the EARC of this novel from Edelweiss and the audiobook from NetGalley. I enjoyed the audiobook more!!3* for

Bloomsbury Girls by Natalie Jenner
"Bloomsbury Girls" was the perfect read to usher in Women's History Month. Historical fiction fans will fall in love with the shopgirls' quest to achieve their dreams. Books like Jenner's give women a voice. Whether it's the past, present or future, by standing up and refusing to accept the status quo, women are forging their own paths to achieve equality.

Facts and Other Lies: Welcome to the Disinformation Age, by Aussie author Ed Coper, is just as unnerving as you probably gather it is from the title. The current division in many democracies has been caused by bad actors with thousands of automatic bots that set us off down fake rabbit holes. Started with the printing press, escalated to social media. You may be sent one way, while I'm sent another. CLASH! If democracies crumble, guess what happens next?!
5★ My review of Facts and Other LiesIt's long, but I've included a lot of examples from this terrific book.
Had two three-star reads in a row, but the second one is definitely better than the first.1. Two Doors Away by Elle Spellman
Looks like a romcom because of its cover but isnt.

2. The Keeper of Stories by Sally Page
A cute story but too dragged.

It was such a delight to meet the fantastic Amanda Gorman in the bright children's book by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. So young (only 24 on the 7th!), so talented, so inspiring. America's first Youth Poet Laureate.
4.5~5★ My review of Amanda Gorman with some illustrations and a photo
The Murder Rule by Dervla McTiernan is a departure from her Irish detective series. This finds a US group trying to rescue wrongly convicted people from Death Row. But were they wrongly convicted?
4★ My review of The Murder Rule
Completed The Clockwork Girl by Anna Mazzola.
Great on historical research and plot, but a bit slow.

YA readers, here's an unusual YA retelling for you. One for All by Lillie Lainoff
A gender-bent retelling of "the Three Musketeers".
Has its flaws but still worth a read.

Looking forward to starting Debbie Macomber's The Best is Yet to Come
Aussie author Candice Fox has really established herself as a thriller writer, with the new TV series Troppo, set in the North Queensland tropics, based on her first book, Crimson Lake. Her latest, The Chase, finds 600+ prisoners turned loose in the Nevada desert, including those on Death Row. Why? You may well ask. I can see another film prospect here!
4★ My review of The Chase
Debbie Macomber's The Best is Yet To Come.
Macomber masterly weaves stories together and makes readers question how we judge people at face value. Cade gives a voice to the soldiers that return home and are unable to assimilate back into society. Whether veterans are facing pain, rage or trauma, Macomber's poignant story illustrates that compassion and kindness goes a long way to facilitate healing rather than locking it away.
My Full 5-Starred Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Completed "The Nurse" by Claire Allan.
Don't go by the bland cover and title. It is a very dark and disturbing read, though it could have worked even better with tighter editing.
