Phew, that's a relief, Melas.

When I read stuff that leaves me feeling the way I have lately I usually go for short stories. But unfortunately the short story books I have on my Kindle that I would like to read are in pdf format, so not the easiest to get through.

I do feel the pressure of the clock ticking with r4r and netgalley books as well... But it's pretty counterproductive to keep reading them if I don't feel up to it so yes, I will most likely read a classic after this one and Bald New World, or just a really short read, 100 pages or less. Most likely horror, to take a break from all the sci-fi/fantasy.

message 452: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think part of why I hesitate to take or ask for R4R books is my inclination to do so many re-reads. It makes my progress through completely new to my TBR pile very slow, but it keeps me a happy reader!

message 453: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Well, I did decide to cut down on the quantity of R4R books I read. And I think I'm much better at not jumping on the first occasion I see, but only selecting books that I think I'll really like and enjoy.

Kandice Leonard Nimoy died this morning. :*(

Leigh Stuart | 348 comments Kandice wrote: "Leonard Nimoy died this morning. :*("

I just read about that in another thread - how sad.

message 456: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Funny enough, each of my children called me throughout the day to ask if I had heard and if I was ok.

When Colleen McCullough dies recently I cried inconsolably (I know...), but was simply sad about Nimoy. I tried to explain that with a writer, it felt like so much more loss because they would never create another story, which feels very different than portraying a character. I'm not expressing it well, but I know what I mean. O_o

message 457: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 348 comments Maybe your emotional connection was just different. I think books can affect us differently than movies.

I understand what you mean, Kandice. I would be absolutely devasted if Stephen King died. I think of it often, too often for my own good, the guy is not young anymore...

message 459: by Kandice (new)

Kandice When he was hit by the van I felt like I was living on pins and needles until he was out of the woods. That was a looooong time ago. I can't imagine how much worse it would/will be now.

message 460: by Kandice (new)

Kandice A lot of you live where it is often cold, but where I am, that's not the norm. Because of that, I store my sweaters in a cupboard, but they tend to be a bit wrinkled when I want to wear them. If you toss a sweater (or whatever) in the dryer with a handful of ice cubes for 15 minutes on low, it comes out perfect!

Trivia/tip for the day! :D

message 461: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Sounds great, now if only I owned a dryer ahah

message 462: by Kandice (new)

Kandice When I was a child we only line dried our clothes, but as adult, I cannot even imagine living without it! I do about 10 - 12 loads of laundry a week, so would never have the time to line dry it all despite our good weather. Not to mention the fact that my youngest son has horrible allergies and seems to have a very hard time with wearing anything my mom has line dried when we visit.

We're a bunch of pampered babies...O_o

Hello, everyone! How was your weekend?
My saturday was not very pleasant. Crashed my car for the first time. No one was hurt, just my pride and my car. I was quite a nervewreck so decided to unwind on sunday, went to the park since it was a lovely day and spent a couple of hours reading there.
And well now it's monday. The day is lovely and I am trying not to despair when I think of how much it's going to cost me to repair the car.

Zut alors! I'm sorry, and believe me, I know the feeling and it is not a good one. Keeping my fingers crossed for you for inexpensive repairs!

Thanks, I'll need it. Unfortunately they will be very expensive :( Which sucks cause I had plan to go away for a week next week. Now I won't even be able to go in the summer. *sigh*

@Ana - Ugh...we'll do some buddy read get-aways!

Ahah yeah, one of these days I need to post the paperbacks I have waiting on shelf, maybe folks will be more interested in doing buddy reads of those.

Have you guys seen all the suggestions on the Set up thread btw?

I did fast a couple years ago on holy friday or whatever it is said in english, but felt terrible due to my gastric problems. I will be eating a whole lot less but can't fully fast.

message 469: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Ana, I am so, so sorry! I've never actually been in a car accident, but the idea is terrifying to me. More so now that my children drive. It's a bummer when you have plans and the expenses of life's emergencies cancel them for you. :*(

I'm really, really sorry!

Kandice Aaron(Reblast) wrote: "Have any of you ever fasted? And for how long?"

I've fasted quite a few times, mostly for religious reasons. Three days is the longest, but I drank water.

The first day is the hardest, and by the third, I wasn't even hungry anymore.

Thanks Kandice, I appreciate it. I only hope my driving won't be too affected cause now I am really scared. I won't have the car before wednesday...

Wow 3 days O_O I only did it for 1 and it was pretty bad at the end of the day. I had to drink water and threw that up and then kept convulsing without anything else to get out...

Kandice Ana wrote: "Thanks Kandice, I appreciate it. I only hope my driving won't be too affected cause now I am really scared. I won't have the car before wednesday..."

Not that you need a lecture from me, but I suggest you drive again as soon as you have your car back. Fear can really mess you up. "Get back on the horse..." and all of that.

I'm happy you weren't hope. Let us know how driving again goes and good luck.

I appreciate any advice, Kandice :)
I will have to drive whether I want to or not... Just hope it won't get too overwhelming. Hopefully I will be able to start with short drives! Thanks for the support!!

You would be amazed at how much we eat that isn't necessary. Truly.

message 476: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments @Ana I'm glad to hear that you are safe and sound!

@Aaron & Kandice I have never really fasted per se, but a few times, I tried to eat less on Holy Fridays (I'll go with Ana's way of saying it). And one or twice I was so sick that I could barely eat anythings for 2-3 days (I would throw up everything, including water. Which is a pain to take your medecine). Don't know if it counts as fasting.
But agree on the fact that we eat much more than necessary.

As for my WE, my friends convinced me to go on a 10 km race on Sunday. I went, I did finish the race which is a victory for me. But now, my legs hurt horribly...

I could walk 10k, but run? Never! Kudos to you.

message 478: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Wow Melas, great job! I could never do that in my wildest dreams xD Most I have walked is roughly 4km :$

message 479: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I'm fine with walking (I love hiking, I can do hikes for double that distance or even more), but I really have troubles with running. So I'm rather happy with myseld on this subject.

I'd love to be able to do a marathon (or even a semi-marathon) one day, although seeing my state now, I will need a LOT of training for that.

Sarah "Pippy" (pippyx) Death says: AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.
Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.
Sir Terry Pratchett (28 April 1948 - 12 March 2015)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I knew he had Alzheimer. I knew he had been militating for euthanasia and the right to die with dignity for years. So I was kind of expecting this news.
But it still came as a blow.

message 488: by Sarah (new)

Sarah "Pippy" (pippyx) Was really shocked by the news, I was playing the game earlier that day wandering around Ankh Morpork then just as I left it for the day. Saw the news on Facebook. Went back and to the game and there was a massive wake around 180 folk online sharing how they discovered his books whether it was the game that got them hooked or the books that got them into the game, their favourite ones and just generally how sad they were. The Mended Drum was full to busting with folk buying drinks and toasting Sir Terry.

Kandice Aaron(Reblast) wrote: "Militating for euthanasia? I didn't know that. Come to think of it, Euthanasia would be a good title for a thread/topic. People could give their views on it, or have a debate."

I don't know if euthanasia is the word I would use, but the right to dies with dignity is a HUGE topic in my family right now. My father-in-law has been in ICU, and now hospice for a month and he is NOT getting better, nor will he, but modern medicine keeps him chugging along. It's horrid.

Kandice Spring is not even here yet and yesterday was 98 degrees and right now it's 92. Blech!

message 491: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 348 comments I'm so sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Here in Switzerland, they have very understanding and ethical end of life care. When my father-in-law was at the end of his battle against cancer, the priority is to make the patient comfortable with medication or suppression of medication, even if it shortens his life.

There are many wonderful things about America, but end of life care, at least in California, is NOT one of them. This is a relatively sue happy state so Dr.s need to cover their butts, and I understand that, but...it's the pits.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. Friday he had a "good" day and was able to tell we were with him for brief moments. We are wondering if that was his perk up before the final farewell. If so, I'm glad we had that day.

Kandice We just got back from 3 days in Las Vegas. Not for gambling or anything, but my daughter was in a college exhibition for soccer.
I have a TON of laundry, housework and grocery shopping to catch up on since I usually do all that on Saturday.

I am so, so glad I took today off as well!
