Melaslithos | 1645 comments Hi all!

@Sorobai For my personal use, read/to-read/currently reading is actually enough. But ALL of my friends come to me for book recommendations.

Problem is, I always forget the titles and authors name. I was "There's this book talking about this or that, I think you'll love it, but I forgot the name/author. Let me check it for you." And then I'd spent ages finding the info again. With everything classified by genre/type, it's easier for me to find the right book. Since I remember the story, I can go directly to the right category and I have less books to comb through. Also, they can just go on GR, have a look at my shelves in the genre they like and ask more detailed info on a book they find interesting.

Hmm for me it's more of a personal convenience sort of thing, since I have so many books.
These days, I find myself feeling the need to change genres every now and then, or I will fall into reading slumps more easily.
Instead of going to each book individually, I click on the genre shelf I want and browse through it.

message 653: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I have actually classified only books on my "read" list, not my to-be-read. I feel that it's very difficult to classify correctly a book if you haven't read it before, especially when sometime, the frontiers between different genres are a bit blurred.

I agree, but I have found that most often than not people have already classified it so it shows up on the book page, or the blurb hints at the genres.

message 660: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have read hardly any this week and hope this weekend gives me an opportunity to catch up. Damn job just gets in the way! ;)

message 661: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I was just kidding, but I do really look forward to weekends when I can read more, even though they somehow feel more packed than the week.

I work at a synagogue, but we do have a lovely library on the grounds that I have complete and total access to. It's really beautiful, but small.

message 662: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments @Ana I have found myslef quite often mislead by others or the book descriptions classifications. For example, I feel that publishers will often put books is the best selling genres, in order to attract readers, but that's not how they really feel to me when I am reading the books.
So I prefer to read the book first and make my own opinion of it.

@Kandice Having access to a library at work, that's great! I must admit that I don't know much about Jewish culture and litterature.

message 663: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Oh, that's interesting. I don't think I have ever come across something like that. Maybe it happens more with certain genres.

message 664: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I have no idea what is a bris.

message 665: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments me either!

message 666: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Nope.

message 667: by Kandice (new)

Kandice A bris is when a boy is circumcised and named on his 8th day of life.

Aaron, if the baby was wailing it must not have been a very talented moyal! I am not Jewish, but my pediatrician is. My first son was circumcised by our (at the time) pediatrician and it was the most traumatic experience of my life! Because of that I decided NOT to have my younger son circumcised when he was born, but the pediatrician arranged for her Jewish Moyal to do it (in a non-religious setting) and my baby never even cried! The room was dimly lit, there was soft music playing and they had him suck on a piece of cloth soaked in sugar water which serves as a soother for infants.

A Moyal circumcision should be much, much less traumatic than a hospital or office one.

message 668: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments I really like the Jewish tradition, specially the Kaballah studies, but that's something I could never set my mind to agree on.

message 669: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments That's actually something I've always wondered at: why circumsise boys if not for religious reasons? It seams quite popular in the USA, but it's really not common i France for non-Jewish (are there other religions that request circumcision?).

message 670: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Supposedly, during wartime, men were circumcised because it kept infections down in "that area". Soldiers are often unable to bathe in a timely manner in the field and being circumcised makes it easier to keep clean. Sounds like laziness to me...

We did it because my husband was and it was what we knew. When we decided not to do it with out second son, our pediatrician said that it often causes a feeling of disconnect when male children are "different" in such a visual way from their father and siblings. Had we not circumcised our first son we would not have done so with out second.

If my children have sons I will encourage them NOT to do so.

message 671: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Pretty sure circumcising kids is very rare where I live. Doctors say there really isn't a reason to do it and it reduces sensitivity in that area.

I could swear I heard the opposite too, that it causes more infections, because the sensitive parts are more exposed, but not sure about that.

Sorobai | 365 comments the nonsense excuses people invent in order to justify their religious faith or traditions. Better call it what it is a religious tradition and you agree with it or not without need for other excuses.
As for me I respect the people who belive it as I respect people who don't want to have a blood transfusion, but I can't agree with it anyway I see it. For me it is a violation of the rights of the child and it is what's the point here. We are talking about this child and his future and not of his fathers believes. That's my view.
We could still burn people in the squares in the name of tradition. Why we don't do it anymore? Because we are human beings and we evolve (hopefully!)

I absolutely see your point, but still see the other side as well. I hope that is a sign of our "evolution" as well. Being able to see things from both sides, regardless of our beliefs.

Hello, everyone.
How was your weekend? And how is your monday coming along?
I wish I could have slept longer!
I will take a few days off work starting wednesday till friday, probably won't do much but relax.

message 676: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Our weekend was incredibly busy, so I almost feel like work will be a little more relaxing today than the weekend was! O_o

Only a week and a half left of school! Yay, then I get the bathroom and kitchen to myself in the mornings (mostly). :D

Anita (neet413) | 44 comments On vacation after this week, can't wait! Hopping on a train Sunday to head down to DC for three days, to take in the monuments, buildings, and the Smithsonian. Very excited.

Happy Monday everybody!

That sounds very exciting, Anita, hope you have fun!

Derek I only have a week and a half of school left. It's going to be hell, though, so many finals...

Soon I'll be able to read all day!

Anita (neet413) | 44 comments Hi all, hoping someone here can help. I just picked up a new tablet, the Microsoft Surface 3. It's my first device like this (I don't even have a cell phone LOL) and I'd like to use it as an e-reader. Does anybody know the best place and way to get books downloaded onto it?

Thanks in advance, and Happy Friday everybody!

message 681: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Hi Anita. How you doing!? That's great, cogratulations for your new aquisition. First you will need to look for an app to read ebooks. Usually the devices already have one installed but maybe you will like to try different ones and see what fits you better. Then you need to go online and look for ebooks to download them to your device. There are a lot of free ebooks online, that are under copyright protection but if you want something new or specific you must pay for it.
As for the apps they are almost all free with some paying extras for advanced users.

message 682: by Kandice (new)

Kandice You can download the Amaozn Kindle App, the Nook reading app and others. The nice thing about you using the tablet as your reader is that you are not stuck buying books only from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, or others. You can download all the apps and buy/download books from everywhere!

In truth, I have a Kindle App on my Nook, I just don't use it. O_o

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/digital/fio...

Barnes & Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Getti...

message 683: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Sorobai, you can also sign up for Bookbub. You sign up indicating what kind of reader or app you use and what kind of books appeal to you. You can one email each day with free and deeply reduced books available in the formats that work for you. The email has the links to purchase or download those books. I love it.

message 684: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Thank you Kandice. I saw your other post somewhere where you talk about it and I signed already. I don't like it so much tough. I don't like the books they send to me... I'm afraid I must keep buying them! lol

message 685: by Anita (new)

Anita (neet413) | 44 comments You folks rock! Thanks for the advice, as soon as work is out ( 1 more hour to go!) I'll be looking into all your suggestions.

Thanks again!

Ha ha! I often feel that way too. In all seriousness, my favorite thing about it is that you choose the types of book you want to be notified about. I personally dislike romance and I love that they never show up in Bookbub emails!

I just got confirmation for my Better World Books shipment and I have to admit it made me chuckle:

Hello Ana,

(Your book(s) asked to write you a personal note - it seemed unusual, but who are we to say no?)

Holy canasta! It's me... it's me! I can't believe it is actually me! You could have picked any of over 2 million books but you picked me! I've got to get packed! How is the weather where you live? Will I need a dust jacket? I can't believe I'm leaving Mishawaka, Indiana already - the friendly people, the Hummer plant, the Linebacker Lounge - so many memories. I don't have much time to say goodbye to everyone, but it's time to see the world!

I can't wait to meet you! You sound like such a well read person. Although, I have to say, it sure has taken you a while! I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but how would you like to spend five months sandwiched between Jane Eyre (drama queen) and Fundamentals of Thermodynamics (pyromaniac)? At least Jane was an upgrade from that stupid book on brewing beer. How many times did the ol' brewmaster have one too many and topple off our shelf at 2am?

I know the trip to meet you will be long and fraught with peril, but after the close calls I've had, I'm ready for anything (besides, some of my best friends are suspense novels). Just five months ago, I thought I was a goner. My owner was moving and couldn't take me with her. I was sure I was landfill bait until I ended up in a Better World Books book drive bin. Thanks to your socially conscious book shopping, I've found a new home. Even better, your book buying dollars are helping kids read from Brazil to Botswana.

But hey, enough about me, I've been asked to brief you on a few things:

We sent your order to the following address:

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Goodnight Aaron. You're lucky I'm from the ladies category (at least according to my passport).

message 694: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Morning world! It's the weekend, so yay, but it's jam packed so won't be relaxing, just not paid for work. O_o

message 695: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Sounds yummy! It's actually a bit gloomy here which is unusual for us. There is no rain in the forecast, though.

message 696: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I was looking at my book stats today, and I noticed a funny fact. Both Aprils, this year and last year, were blank monthes reading wise for me. I.e. I didn't read anything during these months. I'm now wondering if there's something special about April for me that I just don't seem to read during it? I'll need to check on this next year too, just 2 incidences are hardly enough to make a conclusion.

message 697: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments That's interesting Melaslithos, what's about April!? Could it be because of Spring!? As for me I have no months without reading, matter of fact I have no day without reading!

message 698: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Well, when I say without reading, it's without reading a "proper" book according to GR definition. I still read a lot of articles, magazines, fanfictions, etc.

But I'll have to dig into it!
