What are you reading in Oct. '14?
Just finished The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett -- holy cow, that was good! -- and am about to start The Masked Empire by Patrick Weekes because I'm really, really excited about the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition computer game and want to get myself ready for it.
Took me a few days to put together my thoughts on Caitlin R. Kiernan's The Drowning Girl. A very unique book, on many levels. Not sure I'd recommend it . . . . not even sure I like it! And yet I gave it 5 stars.
Here's my review

With the exception of Orson Scott Card, nothing on this list has disappointed me so far:

I'm finishing up the Spirit Walker series with Cold Steel. Love the steampunk/ alt hist/ fantasy/ zombie motif. Also almost done with Promise of Blood.
I've just started The Exiled Queen. I loved the first book in the series, but I've seen criticism that this one is very slow, so we'll see. It's also an absolute brick for a YA novel - well over 550 pages!
Heather wrote: "I'm finishing up the Spirit Walker series with Cold Steel. Love the steampunk/ alt hist/ fantasy/ zombie motif. Also almost done with Promise of Blood."How are you finding Promise of Blood? I'm thinking of picking it up this month. It's been on my TBR pile for a long time now.
The only title I know for sure is Broken Soul by Faith Hunter, which is due out next week. Beyond that I have a number of fantasy books waiting to be read, and I can't say which one I'll actually pick up next.

He basically drops you into the middle of the action and tells you nothing about the magic and politics and stuff. Eventually you catch on and it's very interesting magic. It's fantasy with guns! I don't think he's a good writer but his ideas are great.

Yes. My trouble is that I have read so many books especially fantasy. Just reread all my Robin Hobb and so feeling a bit lost.
I am trying a book mentioned on here The Steerswoman as it is an author unknown to me.

I might pick it up anyway due the 'fantasy with guns' bit :D
Reading The Secret History of Fantasy This is a wonderful anthology. Nineteen well-known fantasy writers contributed short stories. (Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Robert Holdstock, Gregory Maguire, etc.) The short by Yann Martell (author of Life of Pi is extraordinary.
there are several books I am trying to read right now.... But i will probably be able to read just one.
The Lost Planet
Heather wrote: "I have yet to read any Robin Hobbs, sadly. I have been trying to decide where to start."Royal assassin.
I started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn this week. I've only read a few chapters but I like it. I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer before.
About to start Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. Was actually thinking of starting George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones.
After having to take a break from fantasy for a couple weeks to catch up on readings for uni, I'm very excited to be returning to the world of Scott Lynch and The Republic of Thieves!
Reading the Broken Eye by Brent Weeks Tymons Flight by Mary Victoria will probably be next
I seem to be binge-reading the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne, despite numerous other things being on the TBR list before these ones. But they're just so addictive!I foolishly made the mistake of pointing out their brilliance to my husband, so he's reading them at the same time. I can't read fast enough to leap-frog him entirely, but he's a slower reader than me, so I have to keep waiting for him to finish before I can get the next book.

I've read two of the Iron Druid books. They are so easy and entertaining. A nice break after some bloated epic fantasy novel!
I'm continuing with "The Dark Tower" series. This is the turn of Wolves of the Calla. Wonderful series, never boring, always an incredible voyage.
I wanted to read this book for a long time, but now it fits perfectly with the seasonal readings. The beginning is very unusual.
Brenda ╰☆╮ wrote: "Evgeny, I still have to get to that one. Soon as I can find a good, inexpensive copy.

Any good library should have a copy.

I didn't like the first one very much but I've read three past that and liked them all a lot.
Heather wrote: "I've read two of the Iron Druid books. They are so easy and entertaining. A nice break after some bloated epic fantasy novel!"Exactly! You can knock one over in a night. Fun and not too mentally taxing.

It's true, the first one is difficult to read cause is full of reference to the past of the hero, but with few explanations. The others are best, with a plot that explore various genres, horror, adventure, and obviously western. I devoured every book. One of the best series I read.
Brenda ╰☆╮ wrote: "Evgeny, I still have to get to that one. Soon as I can find a good, inexpensive copy.:)"
I was looking for this last year around this time and at that point the only thing available were used copies that seemed a bit pricey. Chicago Review Press has published the book under their "Rediscovered Classics" line so you can get a new copy now.
I read the book right now and it is good!!!
Finished The Masked Empire and am proceeding to Dragon Age: Last Flight by Liane Merciel, still in preparation for Dragon Age: Inquisition.
I just finished Doomsday Book by Connie Willis and loved it. I liked how time travel is depicted. I'm working on finishing Alif the Unseen and Frankenstein for group reads. After that, I'll be on to Paladin of Souls.
I finished a reread of Promise of Blood, this time the audio version, and it was just as awesome the second time around. Now I've started Blood Song by Anthony Ryan, which I've been trying to get to for a long time. It's off to a very interesting start!
I've gotten completley and hopelessly sucked into the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. Currently I am on Deadhouse Gates. I seriously don't know how I missed this series for so long, though it did take a while to "get it" in Gardens of the Moon.
Marilyn wrote: "I just re-read The 5th Wave by Yancy and it was even better the 2nd time around. I'm diving right into the 2nd book in the trilogy The Infinite Sea tonight. *Squeal* Can't wait !!!"Infinite Sea is my next planned read too. :)
Kajal wrote: "I'm reading The Lies of Locke Lamora and am loving it so far!"I'm reading it too! Still at the beginning though, so far so good..
A nice trilogy, thanks to a recommendation here on the Group, starting with the The Ill-Made Mute by Cecilia Dart-Thornton. Epic fantasy, quite enjoyable if you don't mind wordish descriptions, eh. To go on with the romance streak, the utterly forgettable Song of the Fairy Queen, first one-star book ever. Before that, a standalone fairytale novel with romance and a Gothic feel with a Beauty and the Beast backdrop, Heart's Blood, sweet and flowing. Now onto the The Ill-Made Knight, thanks to the assonance with another title mentioned before, and to change a little, after the line of romance fantasy books.
Finished Dragon Age: Last Flight and now it's time to revisit a classic: Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress by Michael Moorcock.
