A couple of things to keep in mind:

✸ Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.

✸ Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Thursday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Friday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.

✸ If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain week, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the week in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)

✸ If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.

✸ We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.

✸ If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!

Captain's Handbook

✸ The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.

✸ The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role every week, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.

✸ Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.

✸ Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.

✸ If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.

✸ The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

Review:
Testifying against his partner and getting him locked up for murder leaves Detective Dex Daley deserted by his friends and colleagues as well as his boyfriend, a repeat target of violence, and on his way out of the job at the Human Police Force he loves. Instead of fired, however, he is recruited to join the elite Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron (THIRDS), working side by side with shapeshifters as a Defense Agent. Tossed right into the middle of a murder investigation, Dex has to get accustomed to his new situation quickly - and the fact that his new team is still reeling from the loss of one of their own and not at all happy to integrate his replacement really doesn't help. Neither does the fact that Dex's new teamleader may be a jerk, but he's a very attractive one.

These books have been on my TBR for ages, and I'm glad to finally get around to reading them. It took me a while to get into the story, familiarise myself with the universe (I'm really, really not a fan of "let me explain the entirety of my worldbuilding to you textbook-style" prologues, so I was immediately a little dubious about the whole thing), get to know the characters and pick up the terminology, but after a few chapters I was thoroughly hooked. Looking forward to continuing this series.

Review: I really liked the POV, the fact that it's a 70-year-old grandma, and how much charisma she had! And how she knew she had to solve the murder. I like how for once the POV actually had the relative information to solve the murder, and she had done the time to actually know what she was talking about, none of this new adult murder stuff. I also liked the sound of Lucien, he sounded like such a gentleman and a lovely helpful person.

A Long Line of Dead Men (Matthew Scudder, #12) by Lawrence Block
Qualification - Book 12 in the Matthew Scudder series
Read - 9/1/19
Rating - 3 stars

This is an old school, private detective series set in a 80s and 90s New York, and is full of all the classic characters - recovering drunks, shady cops, etc. In this book, Scudder, the main character, is investigating the suspicious deaths of a group of 31 men who meet once a year to discuss their achievements and note the deaths among their members, which are mounting at an alarming rate. The background storylines are his ongoing struggle with sobriety and deciding if he should marry his long time girlfriend. Lawrence Block writes this series similar to the way a PI might write his/her notes at the end of a day of investigating; it's all facts and characters, who are fantastically entertaining. Reading this series is always a refresher after heavier prose fiction or weighty non-fiction. While the stories are usually traditional, this one had a twist ending that was chilling, and made me wish I could give it 3.5 stars instead of 3.

Review: A quick and easy cozy mystery set in Sydney, Australia, centering around a book club dedicated to reading (and discussing) books by the great Agatha Christie. Needed a little bit of editing here and there (a sudden change of POV was a bit startling, for example), but it didn't affect my reading much. Loved all the tidbits about Agatha Christie, both her life and her books. Also loved how her life and writing was used in the plot.

Review~ oh my if Walker Boone and Reagan Summerside don't get this song and dance over with its going to drive me crazy. My story takes place in Savannah and its a fun story...laugh out loud funny. Reagan in one scrape after another and right in the middle is her Aunt Kiki and Her Mother - Judge Gloria. There is a lot of ugliness surrounding the election between the Judge and Kip aka "Scummy". I have laughed till my sides hurt with their antics. This series is hilarious. I highly recommend if you like cozy mysteries.

Review: I so wanted to love this book, but it was just a slog. It's basically a mystery set in an alternate medieval country and headed by LGBT protagonists (soldier, and basically the equivalent of a bow street runner/protopolice). The problem is it basically added every single detail of their day (meals, drinks, etc) and had huge amounts of jargony worldbuilding that was more confusing than atmospheric. I've never wanted info dumps more, just to figure out what the hell they are talking about. Also, i was weirdly enraged that every recurring character had fantasy names that were hard to distinguish except the mains, one of whom was Phillip, but never Phil. JUST CALL HIM PHIL, NICO!

Review:
This one was a little different than the first one, I thought it'd be an easy going romantic comedy but the main plot was a little more heavier than I expected.
I already liked the narrator, Max, from the previous book was a great character, I thought her funny and straightforward. But, I didn't expected her to have such background.
The romance was cute and I loved to read all the baking and yummy recipes that Max made throughout the book.
Here's is a novel when, for the first time, I think, I didn't hated any of the characters hahaha.
