ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments 10. Of the 60 million European soldiers who were mobilised from 1914 to 1918, 8 million were killed, 7 million were permanently disabled, and 15 million were seriously injured. Germany lost 15.1% of its active male population, Austria-Hungary lost 17.1%, and France lost 10.5%. Those who had survived had suffered gas attacks or got shell shocked. Some returned home without legs or arms. Some lost their sanity. Read a book where one of the characters is mad or traumatized.
Duma Key by Stephen King
Duma Key**** The main character was in a crane accident causing him to lose his arm and damage his brain. Through his madness he was able to paint as an outlet of sorts.

message 60: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #2 (two countries) - Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett. I love this series and Follett's writing, and truly love the accomplishment of reading an 1100 page book. My only criticism, which I have found in the other books as well, is that about half way through the plot loses its zest. The characters tend to fall out of character, and there are gaps in the plots for each concurrent storyline. Other than that minor issue, I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend the series. 4.5 stars

message 61: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #3 (crime novel) - The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly. I enjoy Connelly's writing and the Harry Bosch character, and I particularly appreciate his better-than-most legal accuracy. However, I felt this book dragged in parts. Overall entertaining and definitely recommend the series. 3.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #1 (book less than 100 days old) - Burn by James Patterson. I usually love the books in this series, but I was disappointed by this one. The narrative feels like it's being thrown together without a lot of thought being put into fleshing out the plot. Entertaining but not exactly what I expected from this series. 3.5 stars

It was a very quick read, but I felt the author did not go far enough in explaining the world and the peculiar children. I liked the time-traveling and the characters. Definitely recommend. 4 stars

message 81: by ChrisP (last edited Oct 16, 2014 05:24PM) (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments 6. World War I was the first war where tanks, aero planes, and submarines or underwater boats (U-boats) were used as common weapons. The generals however were used to fighting wars without these, so they ordered their armies to attack in the old style of marching in rows--allowing the enemy to shoot them down easily. At the battle of the Somme in 1916, 60 000 British men died in a single day. Read either a book where something new is introduced OR read a book about technology or science.

A New Dawn (Star Wars) by John Jackson Miller
A New Dawn*** This book is full of future technology. All tech begins at our imagination.

message 82: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #10 (traumatized character - main character suffers from PTSD) - In Your Dreams by Kristan Higgins. I love this series, and this book was a perfect addition! Heartfelt story mixed with great comedic writing and interesting characters, all centered around a good love story - can't get better than that! Only bad thing is that I don't want the series to end!!! Definitely recommend! 4 stars

message 92: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #4 (family saga) - Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia. Let's talk about the good things with this book first: I appreciated the interesting world that the author created, I enjoyed the diverse characters, and as a southern woman I appreciated her portrayal of the crazy south. Other than that, the book fell flat for me and felt like it was a witch version of Twilight. There was so much teen angst and drama it made my head hurt! Entire pages of conversation were repeated throughout the book as the 16 yo characters declared their undying love for each other. Not an awful read but I'm not going to read the next book. 2.5 stars
