The wilderness camp is run by a former athlete (maybe). The camp is for troubled teens, and the counselor creates two teams to compete against each other. The winner of each day gets something (extra water, to not sleep on the ground; I can't quite remember). It turns out the counselor is staging things to get one of the teens somewhere where her estranged father can get her in a canoe, but he stands her up.

I'm thinking that maybe the chapters alternate between the boy and the girl narrating.

Not it. The male and female protagonists in the book I'm trying to remember don't meet until they get the wilderness camp. Also, I think the camp they end up at with the others (maybe 10 kids in all and the one "counselor") is in the southwest US.

Nope. I had no idea there were so many YA books about wilderness camps for troubled teens. And that last one looks good; I put it on my Want to Read list.

Not any of these, either. My memory of the opening is the boy in a HS Quiz competition, and answering all but the last question and messing up on that last question (maybe). I also want to say there is something to do with space or stars in the title, although that isn't really part of the plot.
