Best way is to check the word count with arbookfind.com. I just had a look at a couple by that author and they are all only around 10,000 words and so wouldn't count
(min word count required is 25,000)

I hate to be annoying if thks question was answered before but I was wondering does reading only count if its from a BR or BoTM or can we read any books outside of those thread?

Buddy reads and BOM will get you those standard points for the page number of the book plus bonus points for discussion and writing BOM questions.
I couldn't find an answer so I'll ask. If we participate in a BOM and write a days worth of questions, do we get the points for both or does the day's worth of DQs take into account participation?
Corey, this is my first time playing but I believe you get points for participation, points for writing the DQ and points for reading the book. For example...I'm reading the BOM
. If I were to participate in the discussion and write a days worth of DQ that would equal out to:-Books between 601 and 750 pages = 70 points
-Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
-Participating in a BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
So you would get 130 points.
This is the way I understood it. If I'm wrong, please someone let me know lol!
HI Corey & Ashley,
Yes you are correct that if you read the book, write DQs and participate in the discussion you will get points for all three activities

I am still confused about page numbers. Do we always check a word count or different editions will have different page numbers. If Goodreads has our edition and lists the page numbers - do we use that? What do you mean by the Goodreads default book? Goodreads has a lot of editions it will give page numbers for. I also have ebooks that lists how many pages sometimes. And with a lot of the classics - they can be unabridged and translated to varying degrees, therefore page numbers and word counts will differ.

Yes, that is what it means Christine.
If the page counts vary widely between editions on GR then we would check the word count via sites like arbookfind.com.
Your captains can verify page counts in their Captains group

A question about BR. If a BR is for a series of books, do you get points for each book, or just one for the BR in general?
You get it for each book you mark as "read", provided that there has been some discussion about the book with a member of a different TT or someone not in TTs
Karen wrote: "You get it for each book you mark as "read", provided that there has been some discussion about the book with a member of a different TT or someone not in TTs"Thanks for clarifying....I was just about to ask that same question!
What is goodreads doesn't have the same edition of books as I do? Some of my copies have different amounts of pages than editions on goodreads (e-book and regular books are different). Also, some of my series are in a bundled pack on my nook so their page counts are very different. Do I just post how many pages my copy has in my groups post? Or just go with the edition that is closest to what I have?I hope that isn't too confusing.
Unless you have an unabridged version or an extended version then the word count should be the same so therefore using the page count on the default goodreads edition should work for you.
Thanks, Corey. I just happened to think of that the other day. I didn't think it would really make that much difference, but my OCD likes to be happy and when the pages don't match it irritates me lol.

If you go to one of our Books of the Month (BOMs) you will see we split the books into days and we read and discuss a portion of the book each day. To encourage discussion, we write discussion questions (DQs for each day). Members can volunteer to write DQs, and if so, with Tower Teams, can earn points

Yes we will be using the "default" goodreads edition unless there are issues with what has been recorded in GR, and then we go by word count if possible

I have a quick question about ebooks, which was brought up by one of my team members. Should we use the goodreads default page numbers for ebooks (like audiobooks) because sometimes ebooks don't list the page numbers and many times they are way off.
Yes if the page numbers aren't listed or are a bit wacky the default edition can be used (or word count checked if available)
If you finish a buddy read book before the official start date of the buddy read, but still participate in discussion, can you still get points?
No, sorry, the "date read" of the book is the trigger for points. We strongly suggest people doing BRs and BOMs at the moment don't finish the book until after the 8th!
If I were to finish reading a book before the "official" start date of a buddy read, and I go ahead and discuss it later, will I still be eligible for BR points? How would I claim points in this case? Do I claim page points when I finish reading then claim the additional BR points when I officially discuss the book? Or wait to add the complete set of points only once I discuss in the BR thread?
As per the last answer, it is based on when you finish the book and Mark it "read" so if you finish reading the book before the start date, the page points not the BR points will count. I would suggest holding off finishing it until tomorrow.
I'm going to expand on Sanz's question above. If I read a book after the start of TT3 but before the start of the BR or BOM, will I still get points for discussing the book in the appropriate thread?
For example, I may read
next week, but the BR doesn't start until December. If I participate in the thread, do I get credit? (I feel like I'm writing one of those 2 trains heading at toward each other math problems).
Cynthia wrote: "I'm going to expand on Sanz's question above.(I feel like I'm writing one of those 2 trains heading at toward each other math problems)"
EXACTLY!!! And to further ask for clarification, in this scenario, assuming both the book and BR count, is it best to claim the book when it's complete, then the bonus BR points later? Or wait to claim both at the same time?
What TaraJo said. I hope we can mark as read, shelve it in TT3, then claim our participation points when the BR/BOM happens. If not, I'll lose track of my completed books. And also I'm impatient and want to read it now, now, NOW!
Karen, about 7 comments up stated that the "date read" is the trigger for points and in that comment included BR and BOMs.
Corey wrote: "Karen, about 7 comments up stated that the "date read" is the trigger for points and in that comment included BR and BOMs."I see that one...guess I was taking that explanation as "if you're reading a book now as part of a BR or BOM, don't finish it before the start time of TT3 or it won't count for anything." But this is a slightly different question, in that both the finish date of the book and the BOM will be after the start date of TT3, just occurring at different times.
I can definitely see this needing clarification as I've got a few books in this scenario as well.

Yes...if the book is marked finished after the 8th, you will get page points. If you later discuss the book in a BOM or buddy read thread, you will get the points for the BOM/buddy read.
We understand that not everyone can read on the same schedule.
Thanks, Amanda. I was hoping there was some flexibility.I am somewhat a slave to the waitlist at my library for some books. I hate to give up my slot when it comes around for the more popular books just because the BR/BOM is a few weeks away. I imagine I'm not the only one with that issue!

Here too! I am late getting to
and
because of the wait list at the library. I'm counting on this group being so passionate about reading that people will still chat with me in the threads since I'm starting late.
I'm sure you'll be fine. Not everyone can read a section a day, or start at the start date. I have
but I haven't started reading it. If the thread is still chatty I may start it. I'm reading
, so I'll be glad to chat with you if the thread's died off. Just message me if you need it!
Most people keep notifications on for old threads too, so I'm sure you'll find someone willing to jump in for a chat
:)
:)
Just to put my two cents in here (and hopefully relieve a little pre-challenge anxiety)...you don't really need to keep track of your own points too closely. As long as you finish the book after the start date, you just read the book and put it on the appropriate shelf, then comment on your team thread that you completed the book. When you join the discussion, you post again on your team thread that you discussed the BR, BOM, wrote questions, etc., whatever the case may be. Your team captain keeps track of the points. It is good to check the spreadsheet to make sure all of your books, discussions, points are there, but I think it will easier than you expect and you'll all get the hang of it quickly. Good luck everyone! Have fun and happy reading!
Quick question about the BRs. Do we get "extra" points for making it a "formal" BR and writing DQs? Or is this just for BOMs? Just trying to clarify because a couple people are unsure in our Lost Hero BR and we're trying to decide how to organize it.
How you want to do the BR is personal preference. Points for writing DQs are just for the BOMs
:)
:)
I don't know who to ask about this but i'm 3 books away from reaching my goal of 240 books, so i'm gonna up it to 280 and see how that goes, but I just wanted to let you guys know because I don't know how that works with the whole teams being equal thing.
If I'm doing a series read but I'm reading a slightly different book in the series to others in the thread, do I still get BR points for discussing overall series themes and main characters? Or does someone have to discuss that specific book with me to count for BR points?

no all good. If someone is way above/below their goal we will discuss it to see if there are short term reasons like that before looking to change it
