ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Love the team names and the element feature. Are all the names inspired by LOTR? I admit I have not read the books, nor am I that into the movies. I could just google all of the team names and find out, I suppose! But others who are not so inclined to do the research might wonder so I'm doing my civic duty by asking here, haha.

Okay, so far I've found one team name in a Magic: The Gathering deck and another in a D&D monster list, so the inspirations appear to be varied. Cool...

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments *giggles*

Almost... the names were mostly inspired by magic the gathering cards.

After randomizing the elements, well...I we couldn't resist giving Tea a hobbit related name... and she joked about it asking If I would be Mt Doom... off course not.... but I replaced one of the darkness team names by the nazgul second name :)

So yeah, magic the gathering, LotR and some pretty images :D

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Haha! Mt Doom.

Nice job, Sonia! I love M:TG and their pretty cards.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Groovy! Well then, great job, Amanda! And all the mods!

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments If I start a book on November 6th but finish it on the 8th, does my team get points for the pages i read on the 8th? Or does the book have to be started on the 8th?

Only finish date counts. No need to wait till 8th.
And whole book counts, not just pages you've read.

message 58: by Alex (new)

Alex | 1018 comments For page counts, do we use the most popular edition on GR or the edition that we actually read?

Edition you've read.
Default edition will be used for audiobooks.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Hi, Mods. Great start to our reading addiction, I mean challenge, LOL. Love the team names and pictures.

If you read a BOM or a buddy read do you get points for the book size (say 10 if's 150 pages) plus additional as its a BOM or buddy read? (Say 30 if it's a buddy read) would equal 40 points? Do I have that right?

message 61: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Let's see if I got your question right :P
You get points for page count with or without BR/BOM points.
BR/BOM points are extra points.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thank you Tea. Yes, that's what I meant. I didn't see the word bonus. Doh.

message 63: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments Just a suggestion for people reading ebooks/audiobooks, I would go with Amazon's page numbers instead of Goodreads. Often, Goodreads pages are a little off but Amazon is usually, as far as I know, spot on with their page numbers. But of course, if you're not familiar with Amazon then go with Goodreads, but Amazon is more reliable with page numbers

message 64: by Christine (new)

Christine | 0 comments I have a question about earning points for Buddy Reads.

One of the scheduled upcoming Buddy Reads is a book I recently read a couple months ago. I realize that I can't get points for this book since I read it prior to the challenge start date, but if I participate in the discussion can I get points for participating in a Buddy Read?

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) can I delete my TT2 hobbit blue shelf?

If you don't need it anymore, sure.
Mine is long gone :P

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments *Apologies if this has been asked, answered and missed by me!*

I know this has been mentioned a million times but I just want to clarify -- if we read a past BOM (*not* buddy read) and actually go through and participate in the Q&A that are posted, we get points? Or do we only get them if an opposing team member plays along with us? And if it has to be an opposing team member, do they have to be new to the BOM, as well, or could it be someone who has read the book and answered the Q&A already but are now sharing in a discussion with myself/whomever? ((Also asked in the BR requests thread))

I think as long as two peeps read the book it will count.

I need to rush to the pharmacy, will see that better after.

I'd like to know this too.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I was just thinking. What happens when 2 from the same team joins in on a buddy read?
Because Abbie and I are on the same team, and will both be joining the Dark Tower series read, will it only be one of us who gets credited for reading a buddy read with one from another team or how does that work?

Thank you in advance. :)

To try and keep things simple, I was intending to only have points count for BRs and BOMs once the book is marked as "read" by the member. This would mean the answer to your question is 'no'.
I'm happy to take feedback and alternative views on this though?

-Karen

Hi Muffin
Yes, if you go to a past BOM and answer questions, it would 'count' if someone else pops up and interacts with you. This could be a past reader of the book, or a new one. I think you will find most of the mods will interact with you. For example, BOMs that I have read, I keep notifications on, so if it happens to be one of my books then I will have a chat about the book :)

Yes, provided there are others on the BR who are not on your team then you both get the points

Not to complicate things, but what about BOM questions? If you've previously read the book (marked read before the Nov 8 start date) and you write the questions, do you get the points for the DQs?

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Thanks for clarifying, Karen!

Kristie wrote: "Not to complicate things, but what about BOM questions? If you've previously read the book (marked read before the Nov 8 start date) and you write the questions, do you get the points for the DQs? ..."

Ah. I think I would have to take the same principle and say no, unless you are re-reading the book (more than 6 months since last read) and so will have a new "read" date.
Again, happy to be convinced otherwise!

message 80: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Ok, thanks. I don't have any interest in re-reading the one I signed up for, which is why I asked, but I'll just withdraw from the questions and leave it open for a teammate, if they decide to do it. I'm sure there'll be others I want to do. :)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Okay, another question. Again, I'm sorry if I'm repeating things that have been asked and answered but I can't remember seeing this one anywhere.

For a series buddy read, in regards to points being awarded for TT3 stuff, assuming all the rules are being followed (actual discussion taking place, discussion amongst members of opposing teams, book is either being read for the first time or a re-read that qualifies, and any other stipulations I can't think of, etc)...

Do we (whomever "we" is that earns points) earn points per book read in the series (as they are checked off "read", of course)? That seems like a no-brainer, but my brain is currently on the off setting so I guess I need to see that answer in plain black and white, lol. Feel kind of silly for keeping the question up but man, I am brain tired!

Secondly, I wanted to know if it matters if we do a series buddy read where people just pop in with whatever book they are on, meaning we may not all be on the same book, OR if we all need to be reading the same book as one another and have a discussion on THAT book before moving onto the next.

Asking this now makes me think I already know the answer, but thank you patient, wonderful mods for indulging this brain-beat bimbo, LOL!!

I bow down to you all for being able to keep so many things straight. This is one of the most well-oiled groups on the planet!!!

That is fine, really what we want is to have people interacting and discussing books, so if it is a series thread rather than an individual book thread and you are discussing different books, but still interacting that is valid for the points

Thanks Muffin, we sure try :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Sorry if you've answered this and I missed it but how do time zones work in the challenge? Are we running on Goodreads time? Australia is 18 hours ahead so does that mean we can't start counting books till the evening of 8th November?

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Yes I would like to know about the time zone also since I live in Australia.

Karen ⊰✿ | 16594 comments Mod
I've been chatting with the other mods and we're going to try a different approach for this challenge.
Each team captain is being given a spreadsheet that will link and update to an "overall" spreadsheet for scoring. Provided this is kept up to date by the captains, it means we will have real time scoring through the challenge and won't require "Sunday updates". This means time zones don't matter and the date in your time one to mark the book as "read" Won't change from one person to another.
If it doesn't work we may revert to deadlines and weekly updates, but here's hoping :)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments During the challenge that should work I think but first you have to get started. I think her question means if a captain in Australia looks for books read on their Nov 8th, then USA is still on Nov 7th so they won't be marking books read onto the shelf

That's true, and I guess it would be kind of fun to have a countdown to the start of the challenge. ;)
I'll check with the other mods and see if we can come up with a "start" time

message 88: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments In that past these have always had an official start time where everyone could start even though some might not be in the official date yet.

Yes Turtle Collector, that is what I meant. As Mary said we need that countdown clock so everybody is on the same page re time zones. By my reckoning, we can't start (AEDST) till the 8th November, 7 pm.

message 90: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Hey Lisa, I love that you are always so on the ball with time differences. I often look to you if we're in the same challenge and it's time dependent :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thanks Nicole. Although daylight saving can be tricky. I think it starts soon in the US so that might throw my time off a bit. Anyways, you get the general idea, plus or minus an hour.

Methinks I take this challenge just a bit too seriously, LOL.

Actually, here in the US, daylight saving time will end next weekend, just a week before TTIII begins. So that is one less complication, anyway!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I am planning to go back to school in January, which may really cut into my reading time. Is there any issue with me trying to get a little ahead before hand? If I end up several books ahead, will that cause trouble? (come Jan & Feb, I will probably end up behind until there's a semester break)
