Zuza | 168 comments Finished my second book The devil you know, for task #9, it has more than 9 characters with speaking part. Can someone please update that spreadsheet. Thanks

Zuza & team, the Mods will add this task to your sheet for this countdown timer, but for future rounds and deadlines we won't be as kind!

Zuza - if you haven't got access, either PM the mods with your email and the link to your sheet or request access in the sheet itself & we'll get you edit access rights

Isn't this molten stunning?

Unfortunately, you are in MOLTEN and have failed to complete the countdown tasks before our countdown.

This means you have been sprayed with some hot lava and lose 10 points for each book in the countdown stage not completed.

You can chose to finish your countdown books during this round for the 10 points per book, OR you can move straight on to the SafeZone groups for the 30+ points per book...

If you have a book in progress for Countdown, but didn't finish it before the Countdown hit zero then you can use that book for the SafeZone - no penalties will accrue in that instance only, but the timing constraints of the SafeZones will apply (i.e. if you use it for SafeZone 3, make sure you finish it only after you have completed SafeZone 1 and/or 2)

message 54: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 120 comments Okay so looks like we ran out of time to complete the initial tasks, but we now know exactly how it runs so we'll hopefully do better next round.

Do we want to finish the countdown books or move onto the Safezone groups?

message 55: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments It seems like the Safezone groups are worth more points, so maybe that's the way to go if we want to try and make up for our lost points.

message 56: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments Sorry guys! I completely misunderstood the game lol but I'm down for the safezone groups

message 57: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments It would be nice to make up for some lost points, but I don't think I will be able to get any reading done this week. We should also start planning for round 2.

message 58: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I agree with Zuza. I don't think we'd have time to complete the safezone stuff and then we'd get docked even more points!

message 59: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments With that in mind, here's the list for round 2:

10. A title that starts with O
9. Set in Canada
8 Tagged MPG Sci-Fi
7. That is more than 50% black (use tin eye to confirm)
6. From the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List. For this task, you can use books that would otherwise not be allowable for the challenge (e.g. due to wordcount or genre)
5. That has one of the 50 states of the USA in the title
4. That is more than 400 pages
3. That has the letters C-A-T in the title (in any order)
2. Written by an African American author
1. From the NPR List

message 60: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments Hope round 2 will be better 👍

- for task #10, I can read One Giant Leap by Heather Kaczynski
One Giant Leap (Dare Mighty Things, #2) by Heather Kaczynski

- for task #7, I can read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin. Acording to Tin Eye, it has 61,9% of black colour
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

- for task #1, I can read The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty
The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty

message 61: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I could read The Handmaid's Tale for task #6 and Child of the Dream for task #2. Depending on how long this countdown is going to be, I'll keep looking through my books to see if I can add anything else.

message 62: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 120 comments I can read City of Ashes for task #3

message 63: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 120 comments And I can read Illuminae for task #4

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments I'll look into books that fit the description for 9, 8, and 5. How long do we have for this round?

message 65: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments Sarah wrote: "I'll look into books that fit the description for 9, 8, and 5. How long do we have for this round?"

That is still a mystery...

message 66: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments lmao I am struggling with this challenge y'all

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments do you think the books on this list would work for number 8?

message 69: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Sarah wrote: "lmao I am struggling with this challenge y'all"

I'm right there with you, Sarah, lol.

As for you list, I know This Is How You Lose the Time War is definitely MPG (main page genre) sci-fi and I would assume the Star Wars one is, as well.

message 70: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments Ok, I will be reading How We Became Wicked for #8.

message 71: by Sarah (last edited Aug 27, 2019 04:29AM) (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments I am reading this for number nine: Buzz

message 72: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments and this one for number five: Texas Destiny

Give me a few days and I will see how quickly I can punch these out.

message 73: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Just finished The Handmaid’s Tale for the 1001 list tasks! I would request editing access, but it’s midnight and I must go to sleep. Great book, though!

message 74: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments So I realized today that the book I was going to read for Task #2 is middle grade and, as it's not out yet, I can't verify the word count on AR Bookfinder. So I'm switching it up and reading The Nickel Boys instead.

message 75: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 120 comments Hi team!
I unfortunately need to back out of this challenge. I started school this week and the workload is going to be more than I anticipated. I do not want to hurt the team so I think it's best if I back out. I'm pretty sure there are people who will want to be added on. I wish you all the best in this challenge!

message 76: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments Hi everyone!

Kerri said over in the Find a Team thread that y'all needed someone so here I am! I am still trying to figure out how this all works (I read through your thread and it seems like I'm not alone? lol)
Anyway, it looks like everyone has the 10 books for this round covered.
Looking at the Group 1 Safezone - it looks like I can start spelling out A-C-I-D from books other groups have read or from NBRC BOMs. Let me know if I am interpreting that correctly. I'll start looking through what I have right now and see if anyone has read any of it yet/look at BOMs!

That's okay, Kristin! I hope school goes well and I remember that stress. Good luck with everything!

Welcome, Zoe! I think we might need to find books to cover tasks #3 and #4 since Kristin won't be able to do those. Do you have anything that might fit?

message 79: by Zoë (last edited Aug 31, 2019 06:18PM) (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments Oh right! Yes, I can do both 3 and 4.

4. That is more than 400 pages - The Invasion of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #2) by Erika Johansen
Qualification: 515 pages
3. That has the letters C-A-T in the title (in any order) - The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister
Qualification: Has C-A-T in the title out of order

I will also do "C" for A-C-I-D in the Group 1 Safe Haven with Recursion by Blake Crouch
Qualification: Both a BOM after Sept 2 (won't start until after) and someone else has read it. and the author's last name begins with "C"

How long do we have exactly??

message 80: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I'm not sure if we'll have all of next week for the initial tasks, but we definitely have til the end of next week for the Safehaven stuff. They usually post the countdown when it's coming up, but it changes each round!

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments welcome Zoe!

message 82: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments Hi Zoë. Welcome to the team :)

message 83: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments Guys, just keep in mind, that we cannot start the safezone before we finish the countdown tasks. I haven't finished mine, yet, sorry. I was little busy with work I was doing Gigathlon this weekend ...

I won’t finish my two books until Wednesday probably so no worries! Just figured that I’d be ready when we are!

Thanks for the welcome!

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments done with Buzz for number nine. is there one person editing the spreadsheet or are we all updating our own?

message 87: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Sarah wrote: "done with Buzz for number nine. is there one person editing the spreadsheet or are we all updating our own?"

I think, if you go to the spreadsheet, you can request access to edit it.

message 88: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Just finished The Nickel Boys and it's destroyed me. So good but so heartbreaking!

I know we can't start safezone books before the initial tasks are done, so does anyone need help with a task? I can see if I can help!

message 89: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments Can we start safe haven books before everyone finishes? If we finish them after? I’m thinking no, but figured I’d ask.

message 90: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 168 comments @ Kerri I could really use some help with task #10. I still have task #7 and #1 which I should be done with by Wednesday

message 91: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments @ Zoe, yeah I think we have to wait til our initial task books are done before we can start in on our safezone books, unfortunately.

@ Zuza, ok, I can take over task #10. I can read One Word Kill, which is only 200 pages, so I should be able to get through it quickly.

message 92: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Looks like the countdown has been posted! We have 16 hours from this post to finish our initial tasks. How is everyone doing? Let me know if anything needs to be updated on the spreadsheet if you don’t have access.

message 93: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 46 comments shoot. I have to work hard to finish my audio book for #8 and haven't started #5 but let me see if I can find something that will work and will be a quick read.

Kerri, can you add Buzzfor me? #9

message 95: by Zoë (last edited Sep 03, 2019 07:31PM) (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments I’ve finished for both 3 & 4! Do we want to post completion posts? And if so, with reviews or no? I’ve done it a few different ways in challenges... :)

Should I try for a bonus point book? If I can find something short enough that works, I’ll see if I can cram one in tonight before bed :)

Oh I just read that Sarah hasn’t finished for #5 I can look for something and maybe one of us can finish it in time :)

message 96: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments Okay I’ll read this tonight in case we don’t get #5 finished otherwise :)

Washington Square by Henry James

message 97: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments @ Sarah, I'll get it added!

@ Zoe, I think completion posts are always a good idea! I can get those added for this round (so I don't forget tomorrow) and we can try doing completion posts from here on out. And if you can get through that book for #5, that would be great :)

Sorry I'm responding so late! I just finished the book for task #10

message 98: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Oh and reviews are always a plus if you'd like to do them, Zoe :) I just never seem to find the time to write a decent one!

I've got our spreadsheet up-to-date for now. I'll check back in in the morning!

message 99: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments Sounds good!
I’m a quarter of the way through it already. I listen to a lot of audiobooks on 2x so I found something at less than 8 hours so I could fit it in before bed. Hahah. I’ll update in a couple hours!

message 100: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 179 comments It looks like we are waiting on Zuza for #1 and #7, Sarah for #8, Kerri with #10, and myself for #5. If we can finish in the next few hours, then we should be good! We've got this!
