I'm working on The Magician King, re-read of the second book in this series. Planning to read the final book immediately after.Last night I finished PORN. Good grief. I'm still processing...
I am working on the first 4 LONGMIRE novels by Craig Johnson. Interesting reading. The TV series (now cancelled on A&E) was pretty good but the books are better. I'm on the third one today. Pretty fast reads. I'm from Wyoming so I find it wonderful someone in Wyoming can write great stuff about Wyoming, fiction or not. I finished Jim Butchers Skin Game (not too impressed this time). maybe I'm burned out on Harry Dresden and his moving past the original concept. Dunno. Don't spam me on my opinion, please. Anyway, I seem to be moving into short mysteries (Lee Childs, Craig Johnson). Good day, all.
I'm definitely interested in trying those Longmire books. Maybe it can fill the hole in my heart that A&E ripped out.

It was a pulp western series written before I was born that was chock full of sex & violence and somehow I read a ton of them as a kid.
Mrs.Joseph, Walt Longmire is the Sheriff of fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming. Not all that violent and little sex. Personality studies mostly with geography thrown in. But it's NOT boring. The author lives in Wyoming. His sense of humor is very evident in his prose. And I can relate to Chris' lament about A & E cancelling the short lived series. I hope they can shop it around even though it was filmed in Az.
I'm reading The Cuckoo's Calling right now. It's interesting. I'm enjoying the mystery since it's been ages since I read a mystery book.

Hello--it's been awhile! I'm reading Elizabeth Bear's Dust. So far, I am really enjoying the setting and story.

I've been reading the Farseer books by Robin Hobb. The plan is to reread those and the Tawny Man trilogy (skipping LiveShip for now) and then read the new book. I had almost forgotten how well Hobb can write. I would actually argue that the Farseer trilogy is better than Martin's Game of Thrones, and has as much political intrigue.

Sorry, Huckleberry. I have to give in. When a book feels like torture it's time to quit. When you'd rather *be* tortured rather than read it, it's past time. So. Boring. (And for some reason I have, "I'll be your Huckleberry," in my head. Lol)
I finished Assassin's Quest this morning and I'm going to continue with Fool's Errand. Or I might read The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince first.
Frank, how was Tower Lord? I read the first book and liked it but not sure if I want to keep going. Seemed like a nice wrapped up story. Also, the editing sucked. I'm sure Becky remembers ;)So even though I had bought it, I had been avoiding this book because of the crappy cover for years, but earlier this month I read Hyperion
and.... wow. I was completely blown away. This is some of the best SF I have ever read, even though there really isn't much of a complete story to be found in this book. The prose is incredibly beautiful, which isn't something I normally look for in SF, and the characters are all very cool and very memorable. I also loved how Simmons plays with genre and each story is very different from the others. My favorite was the heartbreaking Scholar's Tale. The only one that didn't really strike a chord with me was the one that was kind of cyberpunkish. I think I don't really get cyberpunk. I bought The Fall of Hyperion
last night and will definitely keep reading (though this cover is even worse!!). I also took a break from SF/F and read The Interestings
. It was very good. I really liked the initial idea of kids who show a lot of promise and have the best time of their lives in summer camp when they're teens, and then despite their talent life doesn't really go the way they expected. I picked it up because Stephen King recommended it here on GR, and it didn't let me down. Now I just started Authority
. I loved the first book, which was creepy as fuck. The second book seems to be very different in tone and style although still dark and creepy.
I didn't realize Simmons writes science fiction too. I read The Terror and it ranks up there as one of my favorite books. Carrion Comfort is pretty good too. I need to check Hyperion.

I finished reading The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince. And it was better than I expected. I'm not usually a fan of short stories or novellas, this is a novella, and I expected something like GRRM's latest, but I enjoyed Hobb's fictional historical telling much more.Now onto Fool's Errand.

I am just 100 pages into Tower Lord, the real difference here is Ryan has moved to a point of view narrative, ala GRRM, as setting locales are varied, and one new character POV to date.
I am enjoying it, we will see.
I'm currently reading Locked Rooms - a Marry Russell/Sherlock Holmes mystery - and I'm enjoying it more than the past few, I think, so that's good.
I lied. I meant to read Fool's Errand but... I'm tired of rereading. Started Half a King instead and are almost finished. I like it but I definitely feel like I've read it before. I've read like five books this year with this same premise. The writing is good. And I like the characters. I'll try another Abercrombie. I have The Heroes. And... The Blade Itself, I think... After that I'm starting Fool's Assassin. And after that, I'm ready to start my October Horror Marathon (that I've been talked into).
I'm reading Before they are Hanged from the First Law and the Dragon Reborn from the Wheel of Time. Passing time until George R. R. Martin finally finishes the Winds of Winter. Oh, and almost forgot the Knight and Knave of Swords by Fritz Leiber. I love him and love his Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser books, but that one hasn't been as good so far. A bit of a letdown, since that's the series that got me really into fantasy so many years ago.

Yeah I thought Swords against Death, Mist, and Wizardry were his best. The other three besides knight and knaves were good too, not as good as the other three. And I agree knight and knaves does seem like he was just cashing in on well known characters. It just seems tired and not very fresh. That's why it's taken me several years to finish it even though it's only about 300 pages lol.
I'm not really reading much right now. Can't find anything to keep my attention - I'm thinking about trying to force my way through another chapter or two of The Knitting Circle Rapist Annihilation Squad.

I thought taking a break would allow me to alleviate some of the pressure I was putting on myself, but that obviously hasn't work.
I'm re-reading The Exiled Queen. My mom thinks my constant re-reading of books when I own so many I haven't read the first time is silly, but I can't help it :)
So I startedFool's Assassin. This is not the book I expected. Really. No, I'm not a Fitz/Fool fangirl but this is just... If I wanted to read a Soap Opera Melodrama, I would read one. Maybe this should've just been called (view spoiler), it would've been a more honest title anyway! This book is just weird. And not a good weird. A wth was Hobb thinking kind of way.
I've been following along, kinda doing, re-reads of old favorites. I have at least 10 books, probably more, that I bought new, and just can't get the gumption up to read.:(

When I go through a reading dry spell I like to read YA books. They tend to be shorter and easier to read, you don't need to concentrate as much. It sucks when you want to read but can't.
