Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments If there's no bonus for doing Safezone Group 1, we may want to consider skipping that group (since the most we can get is 30 points per book), and going straight to Group 2 (worth 50 points per book) and then Group 3 (where books range from 30 - 50 points each).

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Trisha, can you read for a different book than spiky? It looks like your book, American War, might also work for #1, non-Caucasian main character.

Jill, what book are you using for spiky?

I'm using The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson #4)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Great! I added it to the sheet. Please check my description of how it fits to make sure I got it.

Assuming Trisha can move her American War book to spot #1, we have these two tasks left:

with a character who lives on a farm/ranch
with a perpetually grumpy/grouchy/bitchy character

Can you do one of them Vicki and I'll see if I can do the other one?

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Okay looks like we do get an 80 point bonus for doing Zone 1, so let's do it! We need the following letters claimed:

B, W, N

Can be any book that works for that letter (no need to find a prior BOTM or book read by a different team's members).

For Zone 2 we need:

- Read a book with brown writing on the cover where the title contains at least four of the letters in E-C-H-I-D-N-A
- Read a book with a natural setting on the cover and that contains the word ANIMAL in the text
- Read a book with a brown item (something that can be touched) on the cover and that contains at least four of the letters of E-C-H-I-D-N-A in the author's name

I'll wait to see what Vicki and Jill can find before I start my search for books for these categories.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I took another task from the Countdown stage but still need someone to read for one more task if possible

with a perpetually grumpy/grouchy/bitchy character

message 107: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments For regeneration in Round 4, I recently read Recursion (and I believe Trisha did too). I've asked if I can join the DQs without reading or re-reading the book. If we can't do that, and if neither Julie nor Vicki want to read any of the September BOTMs, we should focus on the ladder.

We can get 50 points for making a four-rung ladder, and get an extra 10 points for each extra rung we make. We can only earn back a maximum of 175 points lost, so we can only use 16 or 17 books in this chain max.

We have to read books that end in one number and start with that same number to keep the chain going. All books must be over 250 pages or the chain will break. We can use the same books we are using for our countdown books and safezone books to make this chain.

So, everyone please post your books and page lengths in this thread so someone can see if we can make the start of a chain.

I'll start:

Countdown Stage:
- Ridge, Christmas Caramel Murder too short
- The Phantom of the Opera - 360 (can't use ends in 0)
- The Last of the Mohicans - 384 pages

Safezone Stage:
- On the Come Up - 452 pages

So we could use

Last of the Mohicans - 384
On the Come Up - 452

our next book in the chain would need to start with 2, be more than 250 pages, and not end in a 0.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jenny, I’ll check it out tomorrow or tonight. On my phone at dinner now lol

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments That's fine. Almost done my Cyberpunk book. Will write review tomorrow … it's late and I'm too tired to do it right now.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jenny, I added words for round 4 for us. Only thing is I realized that we probably needed more words with S in them, so I tried adding series with group #7 but it kept not showing the letters. Long story short, I added one out of order at the bottom, which doesn't matter unless that drives anyone crazy. LOL I put SERIES at the bottom. I hope you don't mind. I figured I'd help you out and hopefully save you some time, not add more time for you to edit! LOL

Also, I added my read books that I hadn't already added to round 3 and I noticed that we've read 43 books for this round already. Can we read that many or will we get burned?

I found a "bitchy" book! :)

I think we'll get burned. We can't have any extra books beyond those that were in there previously. I think your's was a K book and it worked for author. In UK

message 114: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments All right. Lol I guess we’ll have to move things around tomorrow. I’m too tired tonight.

message 115: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments BTW I got Recursion on Scribd so I can read it. If they will let you and Trisha do something as an alternative task for that book it seems to me like that would be the easiest to do instead of the chain. But I can do either one depending on what everybody else wants and needs to do.

I added a B book so we just need the W & N. Once Jill picks her book I can take the other letter left over.

message 116: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I’m reading our thread and I see that I missed your message regarding not reading anymore books. LOL of course I’m reading more books for other challenges. That’s why I was adding some. But maybe one or two of the ones I added tonight can be used if needed anywhere but otherwise we will just delete delete delete. Sorry about that!

message 117: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments I have also already read rescursion and can participate in BOTM questions if we are allowed

message 118: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Great! We'll see what they say. That could earn us 90 points if the three of us that read it participate. Then we could build a ladder of 8 books to get 90 points to get our max of 175 points. Fingers crossed!!

message 119: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments Finished Charlotte's Web. Signed up for Round 4 Group 1

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Great! Remember we can't start Round 4 until Monday at 7 am.

And we start with the Countdown Phase books

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jill, I see that you signed up for The Invisible Man. I hope you like it! I have only read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison in college and I loved it.

message 122: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jenny, did you get permission to do the DQ's for Recursion so we can get our points? If so, I'll get the book so I can read it.

message 123: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I don't think they answered yet. Let me check.

message 124: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Still no answer, but if you participate in the DQs you'll earn 30 points, especially since you haven't read it yet. I just read it within the past six months so I can't re-read it yet.

message 125: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments So, we have to read the book during the reading period in order to earn points. I really liked the book Vicki if you do decide to read it.

message 126: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Okay I’ll read it. God only knows we need the points! LOL

message 127: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments Darn! Ok noted. Still In moving hell. My library’s Libby looks promising tho!!

message 128: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Thank God for Libby! Lol

message 129: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments Starting the Invisible Man on audio today. Should be quick since it’s under 6 hours.

I wanted to give you a heads up that today is moving day and I won’t have WiFi until sometime on Tuesday. I’ll be able to check notifications here and there, but not much more. As soon as I get access again, I’ll do a big update

I also feel bad that I didn’t sign up for group 2. Right now it’s best that I don’t commit to too much, but I hope to get some momentum again after I settle in!!

No worries, Jill. We have your back! Good luck with your move!

message 131: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jenny, do I need to read Recursion by Blake Crouch now during September and do the DQ's prior to October 1?

message 132: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments It will get us 30 points if you do and if you comment in the DQ thread at least five times I think. My internet is down so I can’t check.

message 133: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Okay, I just wanted to be sure I had it right. I'll check the rules. Does it count as one of our 40 books? I don't know where to look so when you can, no rush, can you tell me what do I do? Do I just say something on the DQ like 'playing for team We Lava to Read? Or do I post it somewhere? If you don't know, I'll try to find it.

message 134: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I think you post a link to your first comment in the DQ thread on the spreadsheet. Under the regeneration tab. You can take my spot because I can’t reread it.

You can use it for safe zone group 3 in our regular tab for round 4.

message 135: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Hey Jill. Please don’t finish the Invisible Man book until we are down with all the Countdown Stage books. We have to finish those 10 books before we can finish the Safezone books.

If you have a book that works for Group 2 in Safezone you can take one of my spots.

message 136: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I finished Ridge but don’t have internet access. I can post tomorrow or someone else can update for me.

message 137: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments I haven’t started Invisible Man. Right now audioing A Wrinkle in Time. But can put that on pause. When should I start and finish Invisible Man?

message 138: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Probably Thursday but we’ll know more as we finish off the countdown stage books. I finished one and am almost done with another one

message 139: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments You mean start it Thursday or finish it Thursday?

message 140: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Start it Thursday

message 141: by Jill (new)

Jill | 938 comments Ok

message 142: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments My internet is finally back up!

I finished two books but they were both under 250 pages so they won't help us build the ladder.

How about when we update our spreadsheet with the date read, we come on this thread and post the book, date read, and page count for any books over 250 pages that don't end in 0? Then we can build the ladder through this thread then post it on the SS.

What do you guys think?

message 143: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments So we cannot start from a book that ends in zero? I was looking today for books that end in a number 1 but didn’t find any yet. I also finished a couple books today but I think that they ended in higher numbers but I’m going to look. If we found a book that was, for example, 161 pages we could use it right? Then the next book would need to begin with the number 2 if I understand correctly.

message 144: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments The rules as I read them for regeneration were:

books have to have more than 250 pages
you can't include books that end in 0
and from your example we can't use books that end in 1 (unless we're reading a book over 999 pages)

So, it's not a progressive ladder, where the next book has to be longer than the book before it. It's really a chain, where the last number of the book has to match the first number of the next.

So we could build a ladder like this:

265
523
384
422
257
732
263
342

Does that make sense? I think as long as we post the page lengths of any books over 250 pages that we read, we should be able to build a chain. In order to get our max regeneration points, we'll need 150 points from our ladder, which is 4 books (50 points) + 10 books (100 points), so a 14 book chain.

message 145: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Yes, I understand now. I just didn’t realize that we had to start with books that had 250 pages plus. I’m glad I found that out now because I’ve been looking for books that ended in the number one so somebody could read a book that was 100 and something pages LOL I’m such a loser Jenny! LOL what would I do without you girl?

message 146: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments One book I finished today is 302 pages BUT I started it yesterday so I don't know if it would count. I asked in the Q/A.

message 147: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Hope you can!

message 148: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Still no response, but if they say no I can read Double Shots, Donuts, and Dead Dudes (A Cape Bay Cafe Mystery Book 8) by Harper Lin which is 252 pages. Then we have a buddy read for The King's Favorite (Daughters of Avalon, #1) by Tanya Anne Crosby 333 pages. I think you're doing that one but if not, I am.

Does anyone else have anything?

Jenny, I assume we CAN read these now and not wait, right? Do you know if we can use our books we are doing for the countdown and double dip?

message 149: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Yes we can double dip, but we don't have to double dip. So if you read a book that works for a chain, you don't have to wait until the countdown phase is over. But you couldn't use it in the Safezone groups then either.

I just finished Becoming which I'm not using for the countdown phase, but it is 426 pages.

I think we should post books on the SS for the ladder, and we can move them around as we need to, in order to make the chain work.

message 150: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments So it's okay if we do that? If I were to finish a book today that ended in 2 and you finished one that started in 2 as well or in a 4 and then tomorrow one of us reads one that starts in a 3 that's okay even though they weren't read in order?
