This is kind of tough to narrow down because I love so many tropes but I also loathe probably just as many. Oh, there's so many I could list...I love a tough, lone wolf – especially if they're a dark and brooding villain that you know you're going to end up loving and that have reasons for going off the rails. Give me morally gray characters any day!
I loathe a miscommunication trope, specifically when the entire conflict could have been resolved if there was communication. I really despise that trope in any story.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your favorite trope and what is your most despised trope?"The typical thriller trope where a group of people meet in one place and slowly start dying one by one. The good ole Agatha Christie trick is my least favorite and overdone trope.
My favorite is probably something like found family / friendship. I tend to enjoy books that heavily lean into that, and it's always interesting to see how it plays out.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your favorite trope and what is your most despised trope?"I have never been really clear on what a trope is; no matter how many definitions I read. So my answer is going to very general, and not necessarily the correct way to use trope.
Favorite is survival stories.
Least favorite is romance stories. Particularly the going back and forth of I hate him, no wait, I love him. (The exception is Red, White & Royal Blue, which I loved.)
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What are your top 3 book recommendations for spooky season reading?"house of leaves by mark z danielewski (if you want a commitment lol)
the only good indians by stephen graham jones
wuthering heights by emily brontë because i just finished it and it had the perfect atmosphere for october
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What are your top 3 book recommendations for spooky season reading?"Sheets by Brenna Thummler -- not spooky but perfect for October.
Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman -- Definitely a haunting book on a different level, but I think it fits this time of year.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What are your top 3 book recommendations for spooky season reading?"- House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
- The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson
- Bird Box by Josh Malerman
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What are your top 3 book recommendations for spooky season reading?"And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides
possibly a Sherlock Holmes, just to throw in a classic.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your absolute favorite book cover?"I think at the moment, Never Whistle at Night takes the cake. My favorite changes all the time.
Another good one is The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Edit: I can confirm - A Day of Fallen Night is indeed a beautiful cover.
I can’t say I have a single fave. One I had as my phone background for over 5 years that is definitely one of my faves is King of Thorns (author, Mark Lawrence). Jason Chan is the artist. I do have a fave cover artist however— Chris McGrath. His work is brilliant and I can always spot a cover done by him.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your absolute favorite book cover?"idk if it's like my all time favorite but a day of fallen night by samantha shannon is such an incredible cover
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: If you could bring any character to life who would you choose, and why?"Maybe Rin from The Poppy War because she's a baddie and she can teach me how to battle lol.
Or maybe Wendell from the graphic novel series Sheets. I could have a little ghostie friend.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your comfort read? Do you have a comfort character?"i don't think i really have a comfort read. if i'm looking to a piece of media for comfort it'll be a movie. i guess if i had to pick though, i think re-reading howl's moving castle would be a comfort
If we're talking a specific book, no I don't have a comfort read. I don't tend to reread books anyway. I can't think of a comfort character either, but if I do, I'll update this.
Like an anthology (The King Must Fall, Urban Enemies) or a book w/ more than one author working together (The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, the Expanse series by James S. A. Corey, the joint pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck)?

LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What was the last book you bought? Did you enjoy it or is it on your TBR?"last book i bought was growing up dead in texas by stephen graham jones. i'm reading it next month but given my history with the author i'm sure i'll enjoy it lol
I can’t remember the last physical book I bought, but I recently bought the kindle version of Permafrost by Eva Baltasar. I'm currently reading and enjoying it!
I bought One Rainy Day in May and the rest of The Familiar series by Mark Z. Danielewski. I finished book one. And will start book two next month.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What are some of your favorite movies/shows to watch during autumn?"I don't watch anything seasonally. I do think a cute movie to watch in the autumn is Kiki's Delivery Service.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: Share a self-care tip or routine that helps you recharge."Taking a walk in the park with my dog.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: What is your favorite Halloween movie?"it's hard to pick so i'll go with one actually set around halloween: ginger snaps
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: When was the last time you dressed up for Halloween and what was your costume?"i can't even remember when the last time i dressed up was but i'm pretty sure i was a witch. i love dressing up i just never have a reason to
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: When was the last time you dressed up for Halloween and what was your costume?"It was about 15 years ago. I dressed up in a renaissance costume.
QOTD: Who's your favorite Halloween/horror character? (This can be vague like character types - witches, ghosts, vampires, etc. or it can be specific characters - Michael Myers, Ghostface, the Sanderson sisters, etc.)
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: Who's your favorite Halloween/horror character? (This can be vague like character types - witches, ghosts, vampires, etc. or it can be specific characters - Michael Myers, Ghostface, the Sand..."amanda young from the saw movies is like my favorite character of all time
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: Who's your favorite Halloween/horror character? (This can be vague like character types - witches, ghosts, vampires, etc. or it can be specific characters - Michael Myers, Ghostface, the Sand..."For Halloween/horror it would be Michael Myers.
But if it was just Halloween, definitely witches.
LCPL wrote: "QOTD: Happy Halloween! How are you spending the holiday? Do you have any fun plans?"I don't have any plans. I'm just going to work and go home lol.
