🌆 Berlin has had a long musical history, starting in the 1700s with its love of opera.
In the 1700s, Frederick II’s was determined to turn Berlin into an international hub for opera to rival other major European cities. Berlin has several major opera houses, with Unter den Linden being the oldest being built in 1742. Two long-standing musical institutions were in each side. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the west, and in the east, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile, underground music culture began to thrive and would become a running theme. During the 1960s, Hansa Records was also formed, which was a leading music production studio.

It started out with underground techno and also in 1989, DJ Dr. Motte founding the festival Love Parade. Techno and clubbing exploded from there. One of Berlin’s most famous mega-clubs, Tresor, was housed in a converted power plant and party-goers had to navigate a labyrinth of corridors, dead-end hallways, and tight staircases. 🎼 On June 25, 1963, Georgios Kyriakou Panayiotou was born in London. He was the son of a Greek Cypriot restaurateur and the youngest of three siblings. As a boy, he dreamed of becoming a pilot, but his myopia and color blindness rendered that impossible. When he was seven, he received a tape recorder as a gift. He started experimenting with Motown records and a phonograph and decided he wanted to be a recording artist.

🎼 In his early teen years, his family moved to a more affluent suburb and that is where Michael met Andrew Ridgeley, who would later be his partner in Wham! At the time, Ridgeley was popular, stylish, and attractive. Michaels was shy and overweight. Unlikely as it seems, the two became friends and started recording songs together. Michael’s parents wanted him to have a “respectable” career like law or medicine, but Michael stuck to it and dropped out of school at 16 with Ridgeley to start working on their musical dream. By 1982, the pair had won a contract with Innervision Records.
4. Read a book with a character that is a musician OR Read a book tagged Music.

6. Read a book where a character drops out of school OR Read a book where a character is shy or overweight OR Read a book with an unlikely pairing (you decide).

🎼 It was at this time that Michael changed his name to the less complicated George Michael. The duo took their name from a Michael Jackson song “Wham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do),” and they released their first album, Fantastic, which reached number four on the British Charts. The next album, Make It Big, helped launch their name in the United States, especially with the hit “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. Their style, both aesthetically and musically, varied from their first album to their second. Wham! released another album in 1985 and toured China, the first Western group to do so. In 1986, shaken by ending of a long-term romantic relationship, Michael decided to end Wham! at the peak of their popularity.

7. Read a book by an author with their first or last name starting with an G or M OR Read a book where a character has an alias or nickname.

8. Read a book that has punctuation on the cover or in the title OR Read a book that has the word “Wham” in it. Give us a partial sentence and location OR Read a book where a character ends something..

10. Read a book that takes place in China OR Read a book with over 1,985 ratings. Tell us the ratings.

🎼 In an effort to erase his teenybopper image, Michael recorded “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” with Aretha Franklin in 1987. The same year, he released his first solo album, Faith, which went to the number one position. Even though many radio stations refused to play it, or only played it during late hours, the controversial song, “I Want Your Sex” became a number two hit. His next solo album, Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. I was released in 1990 and included the single “Freedom.” Two years later, Michael appeared at the Concert for Life, an AIDS awareness benefit and tribute to the recently deceased Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury.

11. Read a standalone book OR Read a book with “faith” (You decide) OR Read a book with a controversy (in the story or about the book).

12. Read a book where someone experiences freedom (You decide) OR Read a book that was published or takes place in the 1990s

🎼 The rest of the 90s, Michael was involved in legal issues with his contract; afterwards, produced two more albums, including an album of covers. In 2003, after a hiatus, Michael released another solo album, Patience, which included a song that referenced his lover, Kenny Goss. In the 2000s, Michael faced some other legal trouble, including drug arrests and crashing his car into a building. Michael passed away in 2016 at the age of 53 from heart failure. Michael has been described as someone who “unabashedly championed pop music” at a time when many people had abandoned the form. His ambition, talent and drive helped him win numerous awards and become a global figure.

13. Read a book with an LGBTQ+ character or tagged LGBTQ+ OR Read a book where a character has patience (You decide) OR Read a book where a character crashes a car.

14. Read a book where a character dies OR Read a book with a character that is in their 50s.

3. Read a book that was published 40+ years ago OR Read a book with a character that has a nickname.

🎶 By 1959, Eleanor & Brenda had left and cousin Edward Patten and a non-relative, Langston George, had joined. With this change in the line-up came their first hit, “Every Beat of My Heart” and a new name followed in 1961. In 1962, their next single, “Letter Full of Tears” was a hit. Langston George left that same year and Gladys left the following year to start a family with musician Jimmy Newman. Gladys rejoined in 1964 after having a son and a daughter and performing some solo gigs. The group did not have any big hits for the next couple of years.

4. Read a book where a character leaves (you decide) OR Read a book where a character cries.

5. Read a book with a son and a daughter character OR Read a standalone.

6. Read a book with the first letter of each title word can be found in GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS (three-word minimum) OR Read a book where characters reunite OR Read a book with a character named Gladys, Bubba, William, William, Knight, Guest, or Patton.

🎶, In 1966 the band was being recruited by Barry Gordy’s Motown label. Initially, Gladys was hesitant because she was worried they would be overlooked for more popular artists, but she was outvoted by the group. In 1967, Gladys Knight & the Pips had their next hit single, “Everybody Needs Love,” which was an R&B smash hit and a moderate pop hit. Later that same year they had another hit with “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” but it was outshone by Marvin Gaye’s rendition the following year. However, they had a number of hits on Soul including “The End of the Road,” “Friendship Train,” and “You Need Love Like I Do (Don’t You).” One of their largest Pop hits were “If I Were Your Woman,” and “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).”

7. Read a book with a character that is a singer OR Read a book that has a title that is the same or similar to another book: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... or https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

🎶 Neither One of Us was the band’s 11th studio album in 1973 and became a best seller. However, the band felt they were not being treated as a front-line act, despite their status as exciting and polished live performers, so they moved to Buddah Records and released their album Imagination, which had three top R&B and pop hits, including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” and the song “On and On” which was used for the movie Claudine. Gladys Knight also made her acting debut in Pipe Dreams in 1976.

🎶 The late 1970s brought many changes. Gladys Knight signed with Columbia Records as a solo artist, whereas the Pips began working with Casablanca Records. Two years of legal issues kept them separated. In 1980 they reunited. One of their R&B hits was “Landlord” and “You’re Number One (In My Book).” By 1987 Gladys Knight and the Pips had switched to MCA Records, where they had R&B smashes with “Love Overboard” (a major pop hit) and “Lovin' on Next to Nothin'.” The group amicably disbanded in 1989. Patten & Guest formed their own production company, but sadly Patten died in 2005 from complications from diabetes and Guest died in 2015 from congestive heart failure. Gladys still performs on occasion and Bubba still continues to oversee his sister’s career and occasionally joins his sister during performances. The group has received numerous awards and honors and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

🎼 Transatlanticism: 2-5 tasks
🎼 Plans: 6-10 tasks
🎼 Codes and Keys: 11-15 tasks

🎼 Originally formed in 1997 as a solo project for singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard, Death Cab for Cutie grew into a huge underground sensation that helped shape the early 2000 emo genre. Gibbard was an environmental chemistry student at Western Washington University when he began performing under the name All-Time Quarterback. In the mid-1990s, he met guitarist Chris Walla at school, and they began writing and recording songs together. They released Gibbard’s songs into a cassette-released album title You Can Play These Songs with Chords, which became a local favorite and helped Gibbard become more established.

1. Read a book that is a standalone or solo book OR Read a book that has the word “cassette” in the text (share page/loc and partial sentences).

2. Read a book that takes place in Washington state OR Read a book with the letters ATQ in the title (any order) OR Read a book where the environment plays a part (you decide).

3. Read a book that has a character named Ben or Chris OR Read a book with a character that plays guitar or a guitar on the cover OR Read a book with two main characters.

🎼Death Cab for Cutie made their official debut with Walla playing keyboard and guitar and fellow university friends Nick Harmer on bass and Nathan Good on drums. Death Cab for Cutie’s name came from the song “Death Cab For Cutie” by the band Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. In 1998 their album Something About Airplanes started to circulate through underground music scenes throughout the United States. However, before their next album was released, Michael Schorr replaced Nathan Good as drummer.

4. Read a book with college students as the main character(s) OR Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1990s OR Read a book with a dog on the cover or in the title.

5. Read a book with an airplane on the cover or in the story OR Read a book that has something take place underground somehow (you decide).

6. Read a book with the first letter of each title word can be found in DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE (three word minimum) OR Read a book that is a debut OR Read a book where someone replaces someone else.

🎼, Death Cab’s next album, We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes was released in 2000 and sold really well for an independent release, so they quickly released their next album, Forbidden Love. By 2002 they were really changing. Schorr was replaced by Jason McGerr and other band members were pursuing solo projects. In 2003 their fourth album, Transatlanticism was released to critical acclaim and mainstream commercial success. Two of their singles appeared on several soundtracks, including the television shows The O.C. and CSI: Miami, and movies like The Wedding Crashers and Easy A.,

7. Read a book where a character votes on something OR Read a book with forbidden love (you decide).

8. Read a book that has a 2, 0, 0,or 2 in the page count. Tell us what it is. OR Read a book that is also a movie or television show.

🎼 Transatlanticism was inspired by the distances between Gibbard’s geographical and emotional relationships with his bandmates and partner. The process for creating the album was also unorthodox in that Gibbard provided a number of demo songs and the group worked on it over distance, and Gibbard used different strategies, like Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, to spark creativity. The band signed with Atlantic in 2004 and released the album Plans in 2005, which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. The songs "I Will Follow You into the Dark," "Crooked Teeth," and "Soul Meets Body" were hits. The band released a touring DVD in 2005 and copies were given away to promote animal rights.

9. Read a book where characters are separated geographically OR Read a book with the letters PLANS in the title (any order).

10. Read a book with a dark cover OR Read a book with teeth on the cover OR Read a book published in the 2000s.

11. Read a book that features an animal OR Read a book that where a character is creative OR Read a book that is unorthodox in writing or narrative style (you decide).

🎼 Mainly because of their touring schedule, it took nearly three years for the follow-up album, Narrow Stairs, which proved to be an even bigger success. Death Cab spent most of 2008 and half of 2009 touring, including to Japan and Australia. In spring of 2009 they released The Open Door before Gibbard took a break and married actress/singer Zooey Deschanel. In 2011 the album Codes and Keys was released.

12. Read a book with stairs or a door on the cover OR Read a book that takes place in Japan or Australia OR Read a book where a character takes a break (you decide).

13. Read a book that is tagged Music OR Read a book where a character gets married OR Read a book with a character that is an actress.

🎼In 2014, after 17 years as a member of Death Cab for Cutie, guitarist and songwriter Chris Walla decided to part ways with the band. He was replaced with guitarists and keyboardists Dave Depper and Zac Rae. Since then, the band has released four more albums, including, Kintsugi, which won the 2016 Best Rock Album Grammy. The album title was inspired by the Japanese art of the same name, which involves fixing broken pottery and is a philosophy of treating breakage and repair as part of the history of the object. Their most recent album was 2022’s Asphalt Meadows. Death Cab for Cutie’s music has been labeled indie rock, indie pop, emo, and alternative rock, effectively defying categorization. The group has won numerous awards and accolades and continues to challenge musical expectations.

14. Read a book where something breaks and is repaired (you decide) OR Read a book where art plays an important part OR Read a book published in 2022.

15. Read a book that has won an award OR Read a book that has a road on the cover OR Read a book that could be tagged more than one genre. Tell us the genres.

🎤 Run DMC was an America hip hop and rap group from Queens, New York City and is considered one of the most influential hip hop groups ever. The group was comprised of Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. When Simmons was a teen, his brother, Russell was an up and coming hip hop promoter. Joseph, known as DJ Run, would often DJ for rappers represented by Russell. McDaniels, a friend, had been more interested in athletics, but became more interested in DJing in the 1970s. In the late 1970s, Simmons and McDaniels met Mizell and the trio started creating music together.

1. Read a book with three main characters or three different point of views in the story OR Read a book that has a character that DJs.

2. Read a book that takes place in New York City OR Read a book with the first letter of each title word can be found in Run DMC (three word minimum) OR Read a book where someone promotes something (you decide).

3. Read a book that has a character with one of the following names: Joseph, Simmons, Darryl, McDaniels, or Jason OR Read a book with a character that raps OR Read a book with brothers.

🎤 In 1983, while in college, Simmons, McDaniel, and Mizell convinced Russell Simmons to let them record. Simmons decided that the group’s name would be Run DMC. Their debut album, Run-D.M.C. was released in 1983 with several singles becoming hits. Run DMC also helped change the vibe and culture of hip hop. Previous old school rappers were usually dressed in more flashy attire, whereas Run DMC wore more “street” style which included leather jackets and unlaced Adidas shoes, which was inspired by Mizell’s own personal style.

4. Read a book with college students as the main character(s) OR Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1980s OR Read a book with a character that has a nickname.

5. Read a book with an author that has a first or last name with the initials D.M. or C. OR Read a book where a character has an interest in fashion or a personal style (you decide).

🎤 Run DMC decided to branch out with their follow up album, which was called King of Rock. They explored rock rap fusions with the songs “Can You Rock It Like This” and “Roots, Rap, Reggae,” which were some of the first rap/dance hybrids. The single “Rock Box” was the first ever hip-hop music video to be broadcast on MTV. In 1986, they teamed with producer Rick Rubin, who also helped produce LL Cool J’s album Radio. Their third album was titled Raising Hell. It peaked at number three on the charts at the time, but would be one of the bestselling rap albums of all time.

6. Read a book that is a hybrid of two or more genres/tags. Tell us the genres OR Read a book with a character that is royalty.

7. Read a book with a title that has three Rs (any place in the title) OR Read a book that has a box (any kind) on the cover OR Read a book that also has a video (movie or TV show).

🎤Raising Hell is often attributed with the start of the golden age of hip hop and helping to pave the way for other musicians like LL Cool J and the Beasties Boys. After a tour, they released the album Tougher Than Leather. It wasn’t the most successful album, but it had many singles, including “Run’s House”, “Beats to the Rhyme”, and “Mary Mary”. In 1990, Run DMC released their next album, Back From Hell which was a flop. Problems began to surface for the group. McDaniel’s years of heavy drinking was developing into alcoholism. Mizell was involved in a serious car accident and survived two gunshot wounds. Simmons was charged with rape in 1991, but the charges were dropped.

11. Read a book where a character has a “flop”. You decide. OR Read a book where there is a car accident OR Read a book with a character that has an addiction.

🎤 After so much chaos in their lives, McDaniels and Simmons joined churches and turned to their faith. The group took a hiatus, but returned in 1993 with Down with the King, which had a gritter sound with some religious references. It had a number of guest appearances and reached Number 7 on the pop charts. The next few years had the group off in different avenues. Mizell produced, Simmons focused on his family and spiritual and philanthropic endeavors by becoming a reverend, and McDaniels focused on family and made some guest appearances on others’ albums. Mc Daniels also discovered he was adopted and participated in the VH1 program My Adoption Journey. The group did come to together in the late 1990s, but there were strong creative disagreements and their seventh, and final album, Crown Royal, was released in April of 2001.

The murder was unsolved for almost twenty years. Simmons and McDaniels announced the official disbanding of the group shortly thereafter. Both have done various projects over the years. 💿 Pink Floyd is an English rock band that was formed around 1964 or 65 in London, England. They are one of the first groups known for psychedelic or progressive rock, especially through their experimental composition. The original bandmembers included Roger “Syd” Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Rick Wright on keyboards, and Roger Waters on bass. The early years had a rotation of various other members and names, including the name Tea Set, Eventually the band was named after two of Barrett’s favorite blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

1. Read a book that takes place in England OR Read a book with the words “tea set” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence OR Read a book with a two word title.

💿 In the early years, the group was a big part of the London underground music scene and were one of the first bands to include a light show for performances. They signed their first recording contract in 1967. Their first singles were “See Emily Play” and “Arnold Layne,” the latter being about cross-dressing and drawing a lot of controversy. Their first album was The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and they continued to do shows; however, Barrett had become increasing erratic. He was regularly using LSD and having breakdowns, causing the band to cancel shows and appearances. As a result, the band added David Gilmour as a fifth member, playing guitar. Barrett was relegated to solely writing songs, eventually being pushed out of the band.

They also embarked on their first major tour and released the single “Point Me at the Sky,” which would be their last single until 1973. Between 1969 and 1972, they released 5 more albums including Ummagumma and Obscured by Clouds . Their next album, Dark Side of the Moon was released in March of 1973 and is one of the most commercially successful rock albums of all time.

9. Read a book that is tagged Science Fiction OR Read a book published in March of any year OR Read a book with a 1, 9, 7, or 3 in the page count.

💿 Pink Floyd struggled with their next album as they were physically and emotionally drained from the success of Dark Side of the Moon . Their next album was Wish You Were Here, which was partially inspired by Barrett and the songs were a summary of the rise and fall of their former bandmate. The following album, Animals, was a concept album loosely based on George Orwell’s pollical fable, Animal Farm. In July of 1978, Waters presented two ideas for the next album. The first was a 90 minute demo with the working title Bricks in the Wall and the other idea would later become Water’s first solo album. The band went with the first idea, which was a story of a character transforming and growing over the course of several songs. The album, officially called The Wall, also had their first single since “Money,” which was “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II).” The album was a commercial success.

Disagreements regarding the band led to legal issues. In the mid 2000s, Barrett and Wright passed away. Various members picked up musical projects under the name of Pink Floyd over the years, but all four members never played together after the early 1980s. Pink Floyd is considered one of the most commercially successful and influential rock bands of all time. You may do as many tasks as you wish.
You may use the tasks as many times as you wish.
A badge will be awarded for participation.

Choose your level:
🎶 Move On Up a Little Higher: 3-10 tasks
🎶Silent Night: 11-15 tasks

🎶Mahalia Jackson was an American gospel singer and is considered one of the most influential vocalists in the genre. Jackson was born October 26, 1911, to Charity Clark and Johnny Jackson in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her mother’s family were devout Baptists and followed a strict code of conduct that included no jazz, card games, drinking, or visiting bars or “juke joints.” Dancing was only allowed in church when you were moved by the spirit. Growing up, she lived with her mother’s sister’s family and there were sometimes more than a dozen people living in the house. When Jackson was five, her mother became ill and died. Jackson and her half-brother were raised by their Aunt Duke, who was strict and had a notorious temper. Jackson found church to be a place of safety from her aunt.

1. Read a book with a female main character OR Read a book with an aunt OR Read a book with an author that has the initials MJ.

2. Read a book with the first letter of each title word that can be found in MAHALIA JACKSON (two-word minimum) OR Read a book that was published or takes place after 1911.

3. OR Read a book that takes place in Louisiana OR Read a book that was published in October of any year.

🎶 Jackson attended school, but due to family duties, she rarely made it a full week and finally dropped out when she was 10, because the family needed her help at home. Church was an important part of her life. She joined the junior choir at 12 as her strong voice was already present. Her family had a phonograph and her cousin often brought home jazz records by Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, and Ma Rainey. Jackson sang along while she cleaned. However, conflicts with her aunt continued, often over minimal slights and made-up infractions, and often resulted in Jackson being whipped or thrown out of the house. Eventually, two other aunts who had moved to Chicago, Hannah and Alice, brought Jackson back with them after a visit.

4. Read a book where a character drops out of school OR Read a book that has a 1 or a 0 in the page count OR Read a book where a character cleans.

5. Read a book with the words “phonograph” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence OR Read a book that has an aunt as a character OR Read a book where a character gets kicked out of something.

🎶Jackson’s move to Chicago was during the Great Depression. Happening at the same time was the Great Migration, a time when hundreds of thousands of rural Southern Blacks moved to the North. In the Chicago area, Black congregations were rising in numbers, but there was an obvious difference between North and South religious presentations and services. Jackson was used to exuberant and joyful displays during services, including clapping and shouting, but northern congregations favored more formal and solemn displays, and Jackson was often reprimanded or shamed for her singing style and movements. Nevertheless, Jackson was invited to join a group called the Johnson Singers which included the sons of her church’s pastor. The Johnson Singers performed at various churches, including small “storefront” churches, which were more welcoming to Jackson’s style of singing. Originally, Jackson had wanted to become a nurse or teacher, but before she could enroll in school, her aunt became sick and money became a priority, so school no longer was an option. Jackson started to make more money with singing and started singing at funerals and political rallies. She even sang for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidential campaign.

6. Read a book that takes place in Chicago OR Read a book set during the Great Depression OR Read set during the Great Migration (1910-1970s).

7. Read a book tagged Music OR Read a book where religion plays an important role.

8. Read a book where a character is solemn or formal OR Read a book with a character that is a nurse or teacher OR Read a book with a character that is a president.

🎶 At the beginning of her career, Jackson often sang at movie and vaudeville theaters, until one day Jackson’s grandfather was visiting her and had a stroke on a Chicago street. Jackson pled with God to spare him, swearing that she’d never go to a theater again, and she kept her promise along with a strict moral code, despite intense external pressure. In 1935, Jackson met Isaac “Ike” Hockenhull, a chemist working as a postman. They married after a year-long courtship and thanks to her mother-in-law’s homemade cosmetic recipes, Jackson and her new husband made skin and hair products to sell door to door, but they did not sell well. Eventually, they argued about Jackson’s singing work as she refused to sing jazz and would only do gospel. During this time, Jackson got a beautician’s license from Madam C.J. Walker’s school and bought a beauty salon that became very successful. She regularly had singers visiting the salon and Jackson would cook for guests.

9. Read a book with a character that sings OR Read a book where a character almost dies OR Read a book where a character gets married.

10. Read a book tagged music OR Read a book where characters argue OR Read a book where characters go to the movies or a theater.

11. Read a book where a character sells something OR Read a book with cosmetics of any kind on the cover OR Read a book where a character cooks.

🎶 In 1938, the Johnson Singers had folded. A musical director, Thomas Dorsey, suggested she do a series of performances to promote his music and her voice and they toured on and off until 1951. Jackson and Dorsey were able to extemporaneously perform and move audiences and at one point Dorsey proclaimed Jackson the “…Empress of gospel singers!...The Empress!” In 1947, Jackson had major success with “Move On Up a Little Higher,” which also became the highest-selling gospel single in history. She started making radio and television appearances as well, including on the Ed Sullivan Show. Between the late 1940s and the 1960s, she produced and created dozens of albums, and had many popular songs, including “Silent Night,” “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen,” and “In the Upper Room.”

12. Read a book that is written by a female author OR Read a book with a night scene on the cover.

13. Read a book with the word “empress” in the text. Give a location and partial sentence OR Read a book over 1951 ratings. Tell us how many. OR Read a book where a character watches TV or listens to the radio.

🎶Jackson was known as a constant worker and an astute businesswoman. Between being a choir director at a church, landlord of a building, her salon, and touring, she was very successful, despite Hockenhull being a compulsive gambler and being unscrupulous with her money. Eventually, they divorced. She continued to be a philanthropist and supported her community in a variety of ways, including paying tuition for 50 college students. She was also an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and sang at the March on Washington at the request of her friend Dr. Martin King Jr. In her later years, Jackson had several health issues. She died of a heart attack on January 27, 1972. She won numerous awards and was inducted into multiple Halls of Fame. Her career spanned 40 years and she helped develop the rise and spread of gospel blues to all.

🎸 Emotionalism: 3-10 tasks

🎸 The Avett Brothers are an American folk-rock band that started in North Carolina in the early 2000s. The band is made up of brothers, Scott Avett (banjo, lead vocals, guitar, piano, kick-drum) and Seth Avett (guitar, lead vocals, piano, hi-hat), along with Joe Kwon (cello, backing vocals) and Bob Crawford (bass, violin, backing vocals). While overarchingly described as folk or folk rock, the Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, punk, country and pop melodies into their music. The brothers played together from an early age and had their own bands in high school and college, but in 2001, Crawford joined the brothers and released their first full length album, Country Was. The album A Carolina Jubilee was released in 2003 and demonstrated the band’s blending of multiple genres.

1. Read a book with the first letter of each title word can be found in THE AVETT BROTHERS (two-word minimum) OR Read a book that was published or takes place after 2001.

🎸 The band’s third album, Mignonette, released in 2004, ran over 70 minutes and included vocals by the Avett’s sister Bonnie, and their father, Jim. The title of the album came from the name of an English yacht that sank off the Cape of Good Hope. It was around this time that Joe Kwon joined the band. Their next album, released in 2006, was called Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions. Scott Avett realized their song “Denouncing November Blue” sounded identical to the song “Uneasy Rider” by Charlie Daniels. They ended up giving Daniels songwriting credit for the song. The Avett Brothers toured extensively to promote the new album.

4. Read a book with a boat on the cover OR Read a book that takes place on water or a boat OR Read a book with a blue cover.

5. Read a book by an author with the initials in MIGNONETTE OR Read a book that was published in November of any year.

6. Read a book with a sister as a character OR Read a book with a character that is a thief.

🎸 While touring, Scott and Seth produced The Gleam, an EP of stripped-down recordings, released in 2006. It was inspired by their experience writing and recording “Famous Flower of Manhattan” during the Four Thieves Gone sessions. The following year, Emotionalism was released and it started rising on the charts and they were receiving more press. The band made their television debut on May 12 to perform “Paranoia in B-Flat Major” on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. In 2007, The Avett Brothers received the awards for Duo/Group of the Year and New/Emerging Artist of the year from the Americana Music Association.

7. Read a book with the words “Gleam” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence OR Read a book that takes place in Manhattan OR Read a book where a character watches TV.

9. Read a book tagged Music OR Read a book where a character wins an award.

🎸 In 2011, Crawford learned that his daughter had a brain tumor so he took a hiatus from the band. He was able to return to perform “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise” at the 53rd Grammy Awards. His daughter eventually stabilized, and he was able to return to the band and his replacement stayed on as a touring member. While the core four members of the band stayed the same, the touring line-up continued to evolve and change. The next studio album was I and Love and You, with videos that included clips from previous concerts, fan interviews, and band member interviews. It peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 best-selling album chart.

10. Read a book with a character that is a daughter OR Read a book where a character gets very sick/has a tumor.

12. Read a book written by a male author OR Read a book where a character uses the words I, Love, and You in a sentence. Give a location and a partial sentence. OR Read a book where a character does an interview.

🎸 The band released several more studio albums before their ninth studio album, True Sadness was released in 2016 and debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Top 200. The following year, a documentary about True Sadness, called May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers directed by Judd Apatow was released. Their most recent album was released in 2024 and is self-titled. References to The Avett Brothers and their lyrics were featured in Colleen Hoover’s romance novel Slammed. They have been nominated for many awards, and have won several, including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance in 2023.

13. Read a book where a character is sad OR Read a book that is also a movie.

14. Read a book where a character performs OR Read a book tagged Romance OR Read a book by Colleen Hoover.

🌆 Havana has had a long musical history, with influences and contributions from as far away as Africa and Spain. When enslaved Africans and Europeans, mostly Spanish, came to Cuba, they brought their own forms of music to the island, including fandango, paso doble, minuet, and the waltz. Fernando Ortiz, the great Cuban folklorist, described Cuba’s musical “innovations as arising from the interplay between enslaved Africans… and Spaniards.” Many of the enslaved Africans and their descendants made percussion instruments and the drum has become an important instrument in Cuban culture. There are over 50 types of drums, but the bongos, congas, and batá drums are the most popular. At one point, drums were banned, so other instruments, like the claves, two short batons, and the cajón, a wooden box, originally made from crates, became more prevalent. Additionally, Chinese laborers came in the 19th century and contributed the corneta china (Chinese cornet), a Chinese reed instrument still played in the carnival groups, of Santiago de Cuba.

1. Read a book with a character with African, Spanish, or Chinese heritage OR Read a book tagged Music.

2. Read a book that takes place in Cuba OR Read a book with the word “drum” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence OR Read a book with a 5 and 0 in the page count.

3. Read a book tagged historical OR Read a book that has been banned or challenged.

🌆 In the 1800s and 1900s, classical music was the most popular style and helped set the trends for future music. In 1896, a composer included in his zarzuela, "El Brujo" or “The Witch” which is considered the first Cuban guajira, or musical genre. A zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes. Additionally, there are a variety of musical genres in Havana’s history, but one of the major genres is son, which is defined by its distinctive rhythm. It became very popular in the 1930s and its most popular derivative is Salsa. The most common themes are love and patriotism. Rumba is another variety and its origins are spontaneous and lively, coming from dockworkers of Havana and Matanzas. The word rumba is thought to come from the verb “rumbear,” which means something like having a good time or party.

4. Read a book that takes place in the 1800s OR Read a book that is written in verse OR Read a book with a witch as the main character.

5. Read a book that has a theme of love or patriotism OR Read a book with a character that works on a dock or water.

6. Read a book where someone has a good time or goes to a party OR Read a book with an instrument on the cover OR Read a book that takes place in the 1930s.

🌆 During the 1930s, Cuban influence spread to the United States with Lecuona Cuban Boys and Desi Arnaz. They helped popularize the conga, mambo, rumba, son, and salsa. The mambo really didn’t gain popularity until the 1940s when the song by Orestes “Cachao” Lopez was played at La Tropicana, a nightclub in Havana. Also during the 1940s, the Big Band era was gaining traction. Jazz was also becoming increasingly popular in Cuba. Violinist Enrique Jorrín invented the chachachá, another Cuban musical genre, in the early 1950s, and it became very popular worldwide.

7. Read a book that takes place in the United States OR Read a book where a character dances.

8. Read a book by an author with their initials in the word SALSA OR Read a book that takes place in a nightclub.

9. Read a book that has a famous person (fictional or real) OR Read a book that takes place over several decades OR Read a book where someone invents something.

🌆 The Cuban Revolution in 1959 changed the Cuban music scene. Many musicians emigrated to Puerto Rico, Florida and New York. Some were even “exiled,” such as Celia Cruz, Cachao, La Lupe, and Gloria Estefan. Cruz, along with others, became associated with the anti-revolutionary movement and was omitted from most Cuban history references and their music never sold in Cuba. The Castro government changed copyright laws, as well as closed venues where “popular” music was played, which were usually nightclubs. Many musicians found themselves out of work. Many young musicians turned to studying classical music and were employed by the state. All musicians employed by the state were given academic courses in music. Cuban musical culture stalled for many years. Tourism also declined. It wasn’t until 1991 and the collapse of the USSR that the culture began to change again.

10. Read a book where a character emigrates OR Read a book that takes place in Puerto Rico, Florida or New York.

11. Read a book where someone protests OR Read a book with more than 1959 ratings. Tell us the number OR Read a book where a character is out of work.

12. Read a book with a character that is in college OR Read a book where there are tourists OR Read a book where something collapses. You decide.

🌆 Havana’s music is a blend of many genres. In the 1970s and 1980s. Salsa became a catch all term for all Cuban dance music and nueva trova came about as a political song form, but son remains the basis for most popular forms of modern Cuban music. Meanwhile, Irakere, a Cuban band founded in the 1970s, helped to fuse traditional Cuban music with jazz. Other groups continued to add new elements to son, especially hip hop and funk, creating a new genre called timba music. Hip-hop became very popular in Cuba in the 1980s and 1990s, and Havana was the heart of the rap scene during that time as well. Rock and Rock was gaining popularity as well but a lot of the more contemporary and popular genres were not allowed and became underground phenomenon. Havana continues to be the heart of Cuba’s musical scene.

13. Read a book that is a blend of two or more genres OR Read a book that is by a Cuban or Cuban American author.

14. Read a book where someone breaks tradition. You decide OR Read a book published or that takes place in the 1980s or 1990s.

15. Read a book where someone makes a political statement OR Read a book that has a musical scene. You decide.

🎙 We Gotta Get Out of This Place: 3-10 tasks
🎙 House of the Rising Sun: 11-15 tasks

🎙The Animals, a British rock band, was known for their soulful blend of rhythm and blues, early rock, and garage rock. Led by singer Eric Burdon, the band achieved international fame with hits like "House of the Rising Sun" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," becoming one of the most influential groups of the 1960s British Invasion of the US. They were formed in 1963 in Newcastle upon Tyne when Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo. The original lineup was made up of front man Eric Burdon on vocals, guitarist Hilton Valentine, bass guitarist Chas Chandler, keyboardist Alan Price, and drummer John Steel.

1. Read a book with a character named Eric, John, or Alan OR Read a book with a character with the same initials for first and last names OR Read a book with a character that has an unusual name like Hilton Valentine. Tell us what it is.

2. Read a book with multiple main characters/POVs OR Read a book that has had it’s title changed: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

3. Read a book that takes place in Great Britian OR Read a book published or written in the 1960s.

4. Read a book that is tagged Historical OR Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in THE ANIMALS.

🎙 Allegedly, they were called The Animals because of their wild stage act, but in a 2013 interview Burdon said the name was a tribute to a friend known as “Animal” Hogg. In 1964, the band found themselves in London along with the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. Their first single, “Baby, Let Me Take You Home” was a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down.” The Animals covered a number of songs by artists like John Lee Hooker and Nina Simone.

5. Read a book where a character has a nickname OR Read a book with a title that is a song title or song lyric: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... or https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

6. Read a book with an animal on the cover OR Read a book with an animal in the title OR Read a book where a character is wild. You decide.

7. Read a book with the word “baby” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence OR Read a book with a 1, 9, 6, or 4 in the page count. Tell us the number.

🎙 “Baby, Let Me Take You Home” was the first single off their debut album, The Animals. In June 1964, another single, “The House of the Rising Sun,” was released. It was their biggest hit, peaking at number one in the US and UK. It tells the story of a person’s life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans. From 1964 through 1966, The Animals had a meteoric rise. They traveled to New York City for concerts and to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. The ride from the airport to Manhattan involved being chased by shrieking female fans.

8. Read a book with a house or a sun on the cover OR Read a book that takes place in New Orleans.

9. Read a book that involves screaming fans OR Read a book where a character makes an appearance on a TV show OR Read a book where a character travels.

🎙 During those two years, their songs were gritty, intense covers of pop-music, like “Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” by Nina Simone. “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” was another big hit. However, by mid 1965, the band was changing and feeling internal pressures. Price left due to personal and musical differences, as well as his fear of flying. They also signed a new deal with the American label, MGM Records, which allowed them more musical freedom. Then drummer Steel left. The song “Don’t Bring Me Down” was the group’s last hit as The Animals. By September 1966 the original group no longer existed.

10. Read a book by an author with their initials in MGM RECORDS OR Read a book where a character leaves OR Read a book where a character wants more freedom. You decide.

11. Read a book that was published in September of any year OR Read a book that is the last in a series OR Read a book with more than 1966 ratings. Tell us the number.

12. Read a book where a character is misunderstood. You decide OR Read a book where a character is afraid of something.

🎙 Their next hits were credited as Eric Burdon and The Animals, but The Animals business affairs were essentially “in total shambles.” Burdon went on to start a solo career and then try to recreate The Animals with different musicians and a different musical direction. All five original band members reunited a few times over the years for benefit concerts or other endeavors. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Chandler died in 1996, essentially ending any possibility of a reunion of the original band. The Animals played a key role in shaping the British Invasion sound, merging American blues, R&B, and rock into a raw, distinctive style that influenced countless artists.

13. Read a book that is a standalone OR Read a book with a character that is a musician.

14. Read a book that takes place in the United States OR Read a book that is considered “influential.” You decide. OR Read a book where a character dies.

15. Read a book that has won awards OR. Read a book that is tagged Music

🎧ABBA was a Swedish pop group that formed in Stockholm in 1972. The original members were Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They each began their own individual musical careers before meeting and creating ABBA. Prior to 1972, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad had solo careers with moderate success. In the meantime, Björn Ulvaeus was the frontman for the Hootenanny Singers, a folk-skiffle group, and Benny Andersson was a member of the popular Swedish pop-rock group the Hep Stars. The two bands often crossed paths. The manager of the Hootenanny Singers saw potential between Ulvaeus and Andersson and encouraged them to collaborate. Around 1969, Lyngstad met Andersson and eventually they became a couple. In the same year, Fältskog and Ulvaeus met and started dating, eventually marrying in 1971.

1. Read a book with a character that is Swedish OR Read a book with four main characters OR Read a book where two characters get married.

2. Read a book that takes place in Sweden OR Read a book published or written in the 1970s OR Read a book where characters collaborate. You decide.

3. Read a book that is a standalone OR Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in ABBA (two word minimum).

🎧 In April 1970, the two couples went on holiday together to Cypress. They combined talents by performing on the beach for United Nations soldiers stationed on the island. They tried recording together for a project, but it received negative reviews, so they all went back to individual projects until 1971 when the couples started performing together again at festivals. Ulvaeus and Andersson kept songwriting and experimenting with their music, including featuring the women as the predominant vocals. They were known as Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, but their manager was tired of the long name and started calling the group ABBA privately and publicly. Their big breakthrough came in 1974 with the Eurovision Song Contest.

4. Read a book where a couple travels OR Read a book where a character performs.

5. Read a book with a character that is a singer OR Read a book with a character that has a nickname or their name is shortened.

6. Read a book that was published in April of any year OR Read a book a character that is a soldier.

7. Read a book with a 1, 9, 7 or 4 in the page count. Tell us the number. OR Read a book where a character goes to a festival OR Read a book tagged Music.

🎧 ABBA had actually entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973, but didn’t qualify. They used the song “Ring, Ring” off their debut album, Ring, Ring. They decided to plan better and used the song “Waterloo” off their second album with the same title. They sang “Waterloo” in English this time and ended up winning the concert, and the song was a hit across multiple countries. The subsequent tour was a disappointment in terms of attendance and sales, but their success picked up again with the release of “Mamma Mia” in 1974. They released several other songs with moderate success in various countries, but their next breakthrough was in 1976 with the release of their compilation Greatest Hits, which included the song “Fernando”. Their fourth studio album, Arrival, had even more hits, including “Money, Money, Money,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” and “Dancing Queen.”

8. Read a book that is a debut OR Read a book with the word “Queen” in the text. Give a location & partial sentence. OR Read a book where a character enters a contest.

9. Read a book by an author with their initials in WATERLOO OR Read a book with dancing.

10. Read a book where a character has a “breakthrough.” You decide. OR Read a book with money on the cover OR Read a #4 in a series.

🎧 “Dancing Queen” helped solidify the band’s success. It reached number one in a number of countries, not only in loyal countries like Sweden, the UK, Germany and several other European countries, but it also reached number one in the US, Australia, France, the Soviet Union, Japan, Mexico and South Africa. Their fifth album, ABBA: The Album was released to coincide with ABBA: The Movie. The hit songs ”The Name of the Game,” and “Take a Chance on Me” were on the album. By 1978, ABBA was one of the biggest bands in the world. In early 1979, Ulvaeus and Fältskog announced they were divorcing, causing speculation regarding the future of the band. Ulvaeus and Fältskog had two children together. In 1981 Andersoon and Lyngstad announced they were also divorcing. Their last album from that era, The Visitors, was released in late 1981.

11. Read a book that takes place in one of the countries listed above OR Read a book that is also a movie.

12. Read a book with a character that has two children OR Read a book where a character “takes a chance.” You decide and tell us what it is.

13. Read a book where a character gets divorced OR Read a book that is the last in a series OR Read a book with a visitor. You decide.

🎧 ABBA never officially announced the end of their group, but their last public performance was in 1982, until a reunion in 2016. Between 1982 and 2016 all four members worked on individual projects. In 1994, two Australian cult movies that featured ABBA’s music helped a resurgence of interest. In the 2000s, the band has come together for various events, including releasing another album, Voyage. They have won numerous awards and are considered one of the most popular and successful musical groups of all time, with album sales estimated to be between 150 million to 285 million sold worldwide. ABBA was also the first group from a non-English speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries. ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

14. Read a book with more than 1982 ratings. Tell us the number. OR Read a book where a character goes on a voyage. You decide. OR Read a book that was translated into English.

15. Read a book that has won awards OR Read a book that takes place in Australia OR Read a book where something comes to an end.

🎸 Weezer was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992, but their story begins a few years previously. Rivers Cuomo, the lead vocalist and guitarist, moved to Los Angeles from Connecticut in 1989 with his high school metal band, which eventually disbanded. He met Patrick Wilson, a drummer from New York, and Wilson’s friend Matt Sharp from Virginia. Cuomo moved in with Wilson and Sharp and started exploring alternative music. Cuomo and Wilson started a band called Fuzz with Scottie Chapman on bass, but it disbanded quickly. Wilson and Sharp reformed a new band, called Sixty Wrong Sausages, with Cuomo’s friend Pat Finn on bass and Jason Cropper on guitar, but that band also disbanded.

1. Read a book where a character moves OR Read a book published or takes place in the 1990s OR Read a book where a character joins something that eventually disbands (you decide).

2. Read a book that takes place in California, Virginia, or Connecticut OR Read a book that has the word sausages in the text. Give us a partial sentence and location.

3. Read a book that has a character that is in high school or right out of high school OR Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in WEEZER (two word minimum).

🎸 Cuomo, Wilson, Sharp, and Cropper formed Weezer on February 14, 1992. Their name came from a nickname Cuomo’s father had given him, which was based on a character from a short film. Sharp, the group’s bassist, was also the band’s manager. Cuomo told Sharp he had one year to get the band a record deal, otherwise Cuomo was going to accept a scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley. That November, they recorded a demo, which included the song “Say It Ain’t So.” The demo was heard by someone at Geffen Records, and they signed Weezer in June of 1993.

4. Read a book with a character that has a nickname OR Read a book that was published in February of any year.

5. Read a book with a character that is a college student OR Read a book where a character has a deadline.

6. Read a book with a 1, 9, 9, or 3 in the page count. Tell us the number OR Read a book by an author whose initials are in WEEZER.

🎸 During the recording of their first album, Cropper was fired because Sharp and Cuomo felt he was threatening the band’s chemistry. He was replaced by Brian Bell. Their debut album was self-titled but is often referred to as the “Blue Album;” it was released in May 1994 to good reviews. Their first single, “Undone – The Sweater Song” also had a music video that was directed by Spike Jonze and the format feature an unbroken take while Weezer performs among a pack of dogs swarming around. It was a hit. Their next video, also directed by Jones, was for the song “Buddy Holly.” Jones spliced video of the band into footage from the 1970s television show Happy Days. The video won multiple MTV Video Music Awards. Their debut album was a critical and commercial success.

7. Read a book that is a debut OR Read a book with a character that is fired OR Read a book where two characters have “good chemistry.” You decide.

8. Read a book with a blue cover OR Read a book with a sweater on the cover.

9. Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1970s OR Read a book that is also a movie or TV show OR Read a book that has dogs on the cover.

🎸 Weezer took a break from touring in 1994 and Cuomo enrolled at Harvard University. During this time his songwriting took a darker turn. Weezer’s second album, Pinkerton, was named after a character in Madama Butterfly. Pinkerton did poorly, both commercially and critically. Now it has a cult following and is often considered one of the best emo style albums. In July 1997, three sisters died in a car accident while driving home from a Weezer show in Denver, Colorado. Two of the sisters, Mykel and Carli, ran Weezer’s fan club and helped manage publicity for several Los Angeles bands. Weezer cancelled a show to attend their funeral and held a benefit concert for the family. The band took a hiatus for the next couple of years. They reunited in April 2000, their productivity soared, and their album, the “Green Album,” was released in 2001. It included the singles “Hash Pipe,” “Island in the Sun,” and “Photograph.” The album did well. Weezer continued to tour and compile songs for future albums.

10. Read a book that takes place in Colorado OR Read a book that takes place on a college or university campus OR Read a book that is considered a cult classic. Ideas here:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

11. Read a book with a character that has a butterfly on the cover or the word “Butterfly” in the text. Give us a partial sent. And location OR Read a book where someone has a car accident OR Read a book with over 2000 ratings. Tell us the number.

12. Read a book with a green cover OR Read a book that takes place on an island.

🎸 In 2001, Welsh suffered from a breakdown and left the band; he was replaced with Scott Shriner. The band’s lineup since then has been Cuomo, Wilson, Bell and Shriner. The band released the album Make Believe in 2005, and the single “Beverly Hills” became a huge hit. It was the band’s first ever Grammy nomination. They continue to write an abundance of songs per album, sometimes as many as 200. Some albums have defied genres and explored different musical choices. They have sold 10 million albums in the United States and more than 35 million worldwide. Numerous contemporary bands and musicians have cited Weezer as an influence. They continue to produce and influence music today and are known as one of the premier alternative rock bands of the 1990s and beyond.

13. Read a book where someone has a breakdown OR Read a book that has four (4) main characters.

14. Read a book that takes place in Beverly Hills OR Read a book where someone practices “make believe.” You decide. OR Read a book that is more than 200 pages. Tell us the number.

15. Read a book tagged music OR Read a book that has won an award.

🎸 Randy Travis is an American country and gospel singer and songwriter that has recorded over 20 studio albums and had numerous number one hits. He was born Randy Bruce Traywick in 1959 in Marshville, North Carolina, and was the second of six children. At a young age, Randy, and his brothers Ricky and David, learned how to play guitar from a neighbor and they would perform on a makeshift stage in their yard for friends and family. While in elementary school, he started competing in talent shows. Randy dropped out of school in the ninth grade and committed a number of criminal offenses, including breaking into a church to hold a party. In 1977, Randy and Ricky entered a talent contest, but Ricky was unable to compete because he had to serve time at a youth detention center, so Randy did a solo act. Randy ended up winning the grand prize of $100 and a recording contract.

1. Read a book published or takes place in the 1950s OR Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in TRAYWICK (two word minimum).

2. Read a book that takes place in North Carolina OR Read a book with brothers OR Read a book where people compete.

3. Read a book that has a character drops out of school OR Read a book where a party takes place OR Read a book where a character is in a juvenile detention facility (or something similar).

🎸 The club where Travis had won was co-owned by his future wife, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Hatcher. Hatcher and disc jockey John Harper chose to represent and manage Travis. Travis recorded several singles and, along with Hatcher, tried promoting it throughout the southern United States, including Nashville, Tennessee. During this time Travis started calling himself Randy Ray. He was able to place in televised talent shows, and then through various contacts, was able to secure a contract with a recording studio.
