Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 1281 comments Hi Jingles! For Option A, does Time Travel need to be a stand-alone genre?

I am thinking about Waterfall (River of Time, #1) by Lisa Tawn Bergren which has Science Fiction > Time Travel on the main page.

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Hey, Jingles! Excited to see your task.

Have a question for you. Option B says that it must be a real place.

Here's the book I'd like to read, but I'm not sure how far the real needs to go. The large setting is Dublin, Ireland, which is a real place. But the location of Chestnut Street is imaginary. So can it be an imaginary street in a real town?

Chestnut Street by Maeve Binchy Chestnut Street by Maeve Binchy

Will this book work?

Thanks!

Thanks, Pat!

I'm not familiar with this book, but if the setting is a fictional place, it wouldn't work.

'Time Travel' noted for this one, Morgan.

And I completely understand. I had this very thing happen in the last challenge with 'humor'.

Thanks! It was fun doing the task :)

That's the thing. The overall setting of Dublin, Ireland IS a real place. It's the Chestnut Street houses and the characters that live in them that are fictional.

I'm ok with the ruling, as long as you're clear about the overall setting of the book. The city and country are real, the street is not. The task specifies a COUNTRY other than where I live… so I'm hoping that you'll count it.

So … what do you think? See my VERY big smile? And here's a cookie too. (wink wink)

lol

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments re: Chestnut Street by Maeve Binchy

Jingles,
I've read a several of Maeve Binchy's works. Even if the specific street, or hospital or hotel that is the focus of the book is fictional, the general setting of Dublin Ireland is very real, indeed.

Binchy's books are realistic fiction. It's not a fantastical setting like Jasper Fforde's England in The Last Dragonslayer or Shades of Grey.

Obviously, it's your call, but I just wanted to give you this additional information.

message 27: by jingles (new)

jingles | 127 comments Thank you very much, BC, because this was almost exactly my problem.

While I understand Dublin, Ireland is a real place (one I hope to visit someday), the book's description is somewhat vague (meaning there is reference to Dublin, but nothing about Ireland--yet it is tagged as 'Ireland'), and lastly the setting info is missing from the book's homepage altogether (though if I understand correctly, this is a common thing).

Had we been talking about Nora Roberts, I would have been on more comfortable ground :)

Pat, I hope this explains my hesitation as well.

Jingles - I'd say Maeve Binchy's works are every bit as realistic (in terms of setting) as Nora Roberts. Or think of Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove books - a made up street, but clearly an Oregon town.

Hey, as long as you rule in my favor, it's all good! (rofl) You're the task master, so your call is word, as far as I'm concerned, and I'd have understood if you'd ruled the other way. I'm set, and happy -- I'd wanted to read this book for summer and couldn't get to it. I'm trying to move as many from my summer unread list to fall as possible.

So I don't have to search, and I'm happy!

Did I mention that I'm happy?

message 41: by jingles (new)

jingles | 127 comments Pat and Jayme, I find myself trying to move books over from the summer challenge as well. The summer challenge was the first time I planned my books out for the challenge (only my second time to participate in the challenge), and I did that very late into the challenge.

This time around, as soon as I saw the tasks posting, I started looking at the books I didn't get to, to see if I could fit them into this one.

American Gods does not work, because American is not a place.

India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy would work (India).

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian would not work because Indian is not a place.

Around India in 80 Trains would work (India).
