20.1 - Most Improved Player - Jingles's task: Another Time, Another Place

Choose one of the following options for this task:

(A) Another Time: Read a book that involves time travel. Required: 'Time Travel' must be a genre listed on the book's main page.

(B) Another Place: Read a book that takes place in a country other than where you live. The book's setting must be a real place, not a fictional one.Required: When posting, include the country where the book takes place and the country where you live.

(C) Time: Read a book with a time device found on the cover or in the title. Subtitles may be used, but not series titles. Required: If choosing the cover option, book cover must be included in your post.

(D) Place: Read a book whose title or author contains an actual place. Subtitles may be used, but not series titles. Example: Paris in Love,New York,The Call of the Wild by Jack London. REQUIRED: If the place is not well known, include a reference in your post to establish that it is a place.

Required: State the option you chose in your post.

Have a question for you. Option B says that it must be a real place.

Here's the book I'd like to read, but I'm not sure how far the real needs to go. The large setting is Dublin, Ireland, which is a real place. But the location of Chestnut Street is imaginary. So can it be an imaginary street in a real town?

That's the thing. The overall setting of Dublin, Ireland IS a real place. It's the Chestnut Street houses and the characters that live in them that are fictional.

I'm ok with the ruling, as long as you're clear about the overall setting of the book. The city and country are real, the street is not. The task specifies a COUNTRY other than where I live… so I'm hoping that you'll count it.

I've read a several of Maeve Binchy's works. Even if the specific street, or hospital or hotel that is the focus of the book is fictional, the general setting of Dublin Ireland is very real, indeed.

Binchy's books are realistic fiction. It's not a fantastical setting like Jasper Fforde's England in The Last Dragonslayer or Shades of Grey.

Obviously, it's your call, but I just wanted to give you this additional information.

Thank you very much, BC, because this was almost exactly my problem.

While I understand Dublin, Ireland is a real place (one I hope to visit someday), the book's description is somewhat vague (meaning there is reference to Dublin, but nothing about Ireland--yet it is tagged as 'Ireland'), and lastly the setting info is missing from the book's homepage altogether (though if I understand correctly, this is a common thing).

Had we been talking about Nora Roberts, I would have been on more comfortable ground :)

Pat, I hope this explains my hesitation as well.

Jingles - I'd say Maeve Binchy's works are every bit as realistic (in terms of setting) as Nora Roberts. Or think of Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove books - a made up street, but clearly an Oregon town.

Pat and Jayme, I find myself trying to move books over from the summer challenge as well. The summer challenge was the first time I planned my books out for the challenge (only my second time to participate in the challenge), and I did that very late into the challenge.
