Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Welcome to day 2 of our read-a-thon! I hope you're all getting some good reading done and having fun with the challenges!

The life of a bookworm is not always easy, sometimes we are facing some cornelian dilemma, you know what I mean? So let's share these hard choices with the group!

description

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

Kathryn | 563 comments Oh, the dilemmas...!

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
My TBR isn't quite that drastic, thank goodness, but I use challenges to help me decide which book to pick up next, and then which books in the challenges are available at my library at the time - that tends to narrow my choices down a bit. After that, it depends on what I feel like reading at the time.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I'm not a great finisher of some projects, but I very rarely discard a book once started. It has to be pretty bad before I'll quit, or else very long. I think if I started a 900-page book and wasn't loving it by 450 pages, I might give it the flick (if not before page 450!).

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I've always been ahead on my Goodreads reading challenge, but I've been behind on some yearly challenges with groups, and no - I don't bother catching up. I figure there's no point rushing through books I don't want to read, even if they're short books, just so I can tick things off a list. If I don't finish a challenge, c'est la vie!

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
It's nice to have matching covers, but I'm just happy to have the books, even if they don't match. I'm currently collecting Alexander McCall Smith's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and the covers that are available here in Australia changed style at one point with the old style no longer available - at least not in the shops where I can get the books.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I feel like I'm often out of step regarding certain hyped books or authors... There's often someone on Goodreads to commiserate with, but if not, I can cope being the only one who doesn't like something! Maybe I've seen something everyone else has missed (although it's probably more likely the opposite!).

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I don't think this has ever happened to me, but I suppose it depends how "public" public is, and how messy the crying is likely to be. If it was going to get messy, I'd move somewhere more private, but if it's just going to be tears welling up and rolling silently down my face, I think I'd just grab a tissue and keep going.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Probably not. I don't often re-read, but if I had the first book handy, I might skim back through to refresh my mind. If I'd done a great job on my review for the first book at the time (or written some private notes to myself with the major points including any cliff-hangers), then that might be all I need to refresh my memory.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I'm always happy to lend my books. But if someone asked who I didn't trust with them...maybe I would make a bit of a joke about it, saying that if they lost it or spilt anything on it or otherwise ruined it, they'd have to replace it for me. Although it wouldn't be a joke - I'd be serious :-)

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Although I don't normally re-read books, in this case I'd go back to an old favourite and try reading that to see if it reignited my fire. Or choose a favourite author. If neither of those things worked, I'd put the books aside for a bit, and do other activities until I felt the desire to read again.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
None - I'm a big library fan, and I'll wait until they're available at my library. Or, if I'm that desperate to read them, and I don't think the library will automatically buy them, I'll suggest they purchase them - and then that means I'll get to them first as suggesting a purchase means a reservation is placed on the book!

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Umm, a while?? I've done really well this year with a personal challenge of reading books that I own - at least for physical books, and I've only got 4 or 5 left (I think) that have been hanging around for over a year. E-books are another matter, as they are a little bit "out of sight, out of mind". Maybe since I've done so well on my physical books for this year, I should focus on getting through some of ebooks for the rest of the year!

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments 1. Reading challenges help me narrow down my options and I'm trying to cut down on my spending so I'd pick a book I already own or the library has

2. Unless I have a strong reason for reading it, I'll DNF it.

3. Look for short books and books by authors I know I can read quickly. YA is usually a good bet

4. It doesn't bother me really.

5. I don't know many readers IRL so I'll probably just post something on Goodreads

6. Sunglasses!

7. I would dive right in to the sequel. If it didn't jog my memory I'd probably look at spoilers online

8. I'd probably just say outright that I don't lend out books

9. Maybe reread an old favourite

10. I would wait and see if my library got them in. If not I'd probably wait for Christmas to roll around and get someone else to buy it for me. I literally have over a hundred books I own but haven't read yet so it's not like I am ever short of something to read

11. I have books that I bought a decade ago still unread but then I have others that I read on the journey home from the book shop because I couldn't wait. I'm not very consistent!

message 4: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

I make a yearly reading plan so I always know what I'll be reading next.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?

I very rarely DNF books. I pretty much have to find it unpleasant or distasteful before I'll admit that I just can't.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

My yearly reading plan helps to prevent this.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

I own very few books that I've already read so....not a thing.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

This happens a lot. I seem to have different opinions about books than the vast majority of people. Oh well. I just deal. No biggie.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?

I do not cry whilst reading books.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

I generally don't forget and I never re-read books.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

I don't have a problem with someone borrowing a book.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

Short story collections are my go-to when I hit a reading slump.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

Only the ones that I can't get from the library (like, ones that aren't yet published in the US).

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

I only buy books that are on my yearly reading plan so books only sit on the shelf for a few months, usually.

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

As everyone else said, reading challenges help me narrow it down. There's also usually a popular book that I'm dying to read, just to see what all the fuss is about.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
If it's 100 pages in, then I put it down. Just too many books and too little time to waste it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I just do the best I can. If I can't meet the goal then I modify the goal.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I don't pay attention to that.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Usually there's someone on Litsy or Goodreads who also wasn't impressed. I don't sweat it too much.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I likely wouldn't read that sort of book in public. Or any book really. But if it did happen then I suppose I would roll with it. No shame.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
I usually Google to find some sort of summary to at least spark my memory.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I use library books so luckily I don't have that problem. But since I'm not big on owning books anyway, I would likely just lend it to them. I'd rather them discover the book also than have it sitting on my shelf for no reason.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Thrillers are usually the fix for that.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Since I use the library I just overdo it there, for free!!

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I've had a stack for about 2 months, some have been there the whole time but I'll get to them when I get to them.

Lieke | 697 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Whatever I feel like reading next, or by doing challenges.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
If it is very bad I put it down, there are many good books I could be reading instead.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I always try to catch up and if I don't I will continue it in the next year.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I cry and get very angry, but I think I will be ok in the end ;)

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
My best friend usually likes and dislikes the same books, but otherwise there is always GR. With so many people there is usually someone who agrees with me.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I try to avoid that by not reading books like that on my commute. But tissues help if it happens.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Depends on the series and author, some authors link back to previous books in the beginning of the next book. Sometimes I search for a summary online.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
No I don't lend out books (but I don't have a problem with lending out books)

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Reread a favorite book or read a chicklit, YA or children's book.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
To many :)

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Sometimes for years, some only a few days

Jackie (heirloomroses) | 211 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
What is due at/ ready for pick up at the library.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
Generally I try to get through, particularly if it is for a book club or a reading challenge. But sometimes I just know a book isn't going to work.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
No. I'm generally already reading as much as I can.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
This has not happened to me.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
You can always find someone on the internet who dislikes a book.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I go to the bathroom and cry there.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Depends on the book. Reading the wikipedia summary generally helps.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
"I'm reading that."

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Listen to a book podcast.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Generally none. But I reserve them at the library. I currently have Magic for Liars reserved.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
If I do buy a book, it is generally a few months. If it is from the library, it is immediately.

Bec | 1337 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Yes good question, I just finished a book today and took about 30 minutes to decide what to read next. Basically I choose the topic I wanted to tick off on the reading challenge and went for a book that fit that I owned.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
This really depends. Usually if I make it half way I will stick it out - but will give up earlier than that if it's terrible.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes, no, maybe....yes I probably would, just focus on challenge books (rather than all the side books I read).

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
No biggie - I read everything on kindle so don't really care for covers.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
So be it, this wouldn't bother me at all.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Put my sunglasses on!

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Nope, just start with the next book and hope i remember as I go along (which is exactly what I'm doing now)

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I generally only have kindle books so not an issue for me.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Find something short and sweet to get me back into the groove.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I wouldn't buy any, I would see if I can borrow them from the library (kindle) first. If not.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Depends on what else is on my list - maybe straight away, maybe a year later :P

message 9: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Rojo (aleromi) | 28 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
This year, I decided to choose those books that fit on the challenges for the year. But sometimes (many times), I just choose it because the cover or the tittle is so captivating that I just have to read it.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I must confess, I will always try to finish it, even when some years had already passed (that happened with El Incendiado by Evelio Rosero, I tried 2-3 times till I finished)

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
No, I don't try. I like to read for fun, so try not to take that so seriously.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
Mostly, I read ebook, so I think that's not a problem for me ;-)

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I don't know, hahaha.... I guess I just move over?, really don't know.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I cry, or laugh, or scream! That makes other people get interested (a little bit) on reading or the book.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
First, I go to my notes and highlights, if definitely can't remember, I would reread, but usually don't do it.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
As I said, I prefer ebooks, but in that case I have said "you can read it at my place if you like"

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Coffee, movies, friends.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I have a budget for that, so I try to select wich fits, and that I am definitely going to read (someday :p).

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Pffff.... There are some that have been there a couple of years maybe.

message 10: by Melinda (new)

Melinda (minna17) 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I have a pretty big TBR anyway (although nowhere near 20,000) and I usually just pick up what I'm in the mood to read. If I'm really stuck I pick a couple from different genres that I feel interested in and I will try a chapter and then end up picking the book I get sucked into. Usually it's the first or second book I try.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
It depends. If it is a part of a series that I've heard good things about I will usually push through but if it is a standalone I will often put it down.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes and usually by listening to audiobooks or reading some graphic novels or comics.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
It annoys me initially but it doesn't really bother me too much. I might try and get matching covers if it is a favourite series and I see them second hand or cheap but otherwise I dont' care.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I will try and find some negative reviews that I can agree with otherwise I will just vent to my housemate or my mum.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I just keep reading and unabashedly cry in public. I tend to cry silently when in public so I don't draw much attention to myself.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Yes, I am a big rereader anyway so I will definitely reread a series if I have forgotten what happens.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I guess I would just say "I don't let anyone borrow my books, sorry," but I actively lend my books out to people to share the love of reading.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Reread an old favourite or read something in a completely different genre. I usually read fantasy, and that is what I get burnt out on, so I would pick up a mystery or fluffy YA contemporary.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I would probably end up buying 5 new releases a year and then use my library to read the rest that I was looking forward to. If they were all coming out at once I would buy the one I was most anticipating and then wait until later to get them or use the library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I have been quite guilty in the past of letting them sit for ages. There are some that have been sitting on my shelves for a couple of years now, but these year I have gotten much better at reading them straight away.

message 11: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2875 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
That is easy read something not on my TBR list.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I keep reading on it a little at a time but I start other books. Sometimes I just have to wait for the right timing. I do better if I finish a book rather that DNF. DNF always feel like an open book in my mind if I finish a book I can forget it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes, I would probably read children's picture books and other short books.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? Uh, it happens all the time. Especially with kindle books when they up date the cover to match the movie/show cover. I just have to read the book and move on.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I just post my low star rating and then look up a long review of someone else who also disliked the book.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? I probably would stop reading. I'm not much for reading in public I get to distracted.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Of course!

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? I don't think I would say no. I don't own any books that I cannot replace. I generally but books used and if I lend one out and it does not come back I can buy a new one. If for some crazy reason, I got an expensive book that could not be replaced I would just tell the person that I was not one I loan out.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? During reading slumps I tend to either reread a favorite book series or non-fiction book. I still read a book in the evenings with my kids and I can only fall asleep listening to an audio book so I'm still getting some reading in on a slump.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? The ones I know I someone else in my family will read or if I cannot borrow it from the library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? Ages : ), that is why I cannot buy them unless I can bug someone else to also read them.

message 12: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next? I usually pick based on what I need for the challenges or what has a long wait list on paperbackswap.com that I use to send and receive books.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? It depends on if I think the book will have any merit to reading the rest. If it is just okay, I will probably speed read through to the end. If I really am finding it a chore to finish and can't see any reason to finish the book besides to just finish it, I will DNF it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how? Yes, I did last year for my overall reading goal. I found all the shortest books in the house and read them over the last two weeks of the year.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? Sigh, I currently have this problem with my Harry Potter series. While the covers match, 4 are hardcover and 3 are paperback. The binding of the first book is completely falling apart and the cover of the fourth book was half-eaten by my childhood dog. I don't know what to do. I plan on rereading them as a 30th birthday gift to myself this year starting in November. Part of me wants to get a new set, but the nostalgic part of me that grew up with this set of books doesn't want to. Any suggestions?

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? Usually the people on reddit's r/books that make posts like "What's a book you don't like that everyone else loves." Misery loves company.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? Pretend I'm just leaning on my arm while really using my hand to shield my eyes.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? Depends on if I have the time and if I own the book. I might reread a summary of the book on the internet or just reread the last chapter.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? If I don't trust the person, I would just say "Sorry, I already promised to give this book to my other friend."

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? Find a new book that's out by one of my favorite authors.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? Unless it's really special to me, I try not to buy any. I usually just put the book on my wishlist on paperbackswap.com and cross my fingers that people will post it. I almost bought Daisy Jones & The Six because I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I held off and someone just marked on paperbackswap that they have mailed it to me. So excited for it to arrive!

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? I'm really bad about reading books FIFO so some books last less than a week while others could sit for a year or two.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? Usually committed.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how? Yes, but trying to just read more. Enjoy sitting by the fire and staying up later (as much as I can without being to tired to go to work). Also try to read during lunch, when I can take a lunch.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? That doesn't bother me.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I don't pay to much attention to differing opinions. I listen to them and voice my own. Respect their reasons for loving a book, but I have my own opinion and move on to the next book.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? I don't tend to cry when reading. However, if I do then I do. If anyone asks I will tell them. I don't really tend to care what people think.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? Yes

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? I just tell them, that sorry but they cannot borrow that book.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? Just keep trying to find a book that I like or re-read a book that I have enjoyed before.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? A lot of them. I wait until I can get a deal on them and then purchase them.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? A while. But I get to them eventually and that makes room for new books.

Jen K | 572 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
The challenges help me so much with this! I would look for what needs to be filled and am in the mood to read.
2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
90% of the time, I am committed and will see it through to the end. If I'm not going to finish, I decide before halfway.
3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Try to be more strategic with book picks, ones that I'm really excited to read and fill a prompt.
4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
That sort of thing doesn't really bother me.
5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Looking at the reviews of any book will find someone who dislikes the book. Reading similar reviews that match my thoughts would be enough.
6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
This happens to me often on airplanes. I just pull out a tissue and try minimize the sniffling.
7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
I'm not a big reread fan. I find that there are usually enough of a summary at the start of a sequel to remember.
8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I guess I would say that I can't find it or promised it to someone else.
9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
A new work by a favorite author.
10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Maybe one, I've really committed to using the library. Putting it on hold is satisfactory enough.
11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I keep picking up books from the laundry room and they do just sit because the library book is about to expire or another has come in. I need more reading time!

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next? This is part of the reason I do challenges--to help pick books! I'm also a big mood reader though, so just whatever sounds most interesting at the moment is most likely to get read.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? DNF!!! I'm actually likely to drop a book in the first couple of chapters if it doesn't grab me, unless I have a good reason to keep going (e.g. it's on an important topic AND I don't think I can find a more interesting book with similar information).

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how? I would try not to stress over it, but I might try to make more time for reading, and maybe even find a couple of shorter books for the prompts I have left.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? Meh. I really don't care about covers nearly as much as everyone else seems too. If it's really glaring, like 1 book is in hardcover and rest aren't, I might keep an eye out for a matching book at used book sales. Maybe.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I might rant a little to my husband about it, or one of my sisters or nieces if they happen to be around at the right time.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? Depends on the exact situation. If I'm waiting for a dr appt, I might briefly set the book aside if really necessary to keep from crying. My emotions don't like to come out in public anyway though, so it's probably not too hard for me to stifle the tears. If I'm just sitting in a coffee shop or waiting for a ride somewhere I'd probably just go ahead and cry.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? Maybe. I'm likely to just start the new book and hope it does a good enough job reminding me about the last book.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? Ugh. In general I don't mind loaning out books, but occasionally there are really special books or something that I'd rather not loan out. I try to either keep in really simple, "I'd rather not loan that one out, sorry," or if it's actually true, let my husband take the blame, "That's one of Colton's so you should really ask him instead of me". (My husband is much better at saying no without explanation than I am.)

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? Do whatever seems fun--whether that's light re-reading, or taking a break from reading for a short Netflix binge. I'll always come back to reading eventually, so there's no reason to force myself into it when I'm not enjoying it.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? Probably none, and just put them on hold at the library. Now, if I run across a great used book sale I could easily come away with a dozen or so books.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? It really depends on the book, what I'm already reading, and so on. I sometimes get to them within a few weeks, but I also have some unread books on my shelves that have been there for years.

Ana | 25 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I would pick the one that calls to me the most or the one that I remember first.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I am committed most of the time I am simply no enjoying a book, but if I am hating the book I will DNF it for sure.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I do not push myself to cathc up, becuase it never works for me.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I let it be.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Probably a friend that has similar reading tastes to me.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I do not like to cry in public so if I can I get into my car, or if it is my family watching I cry in front of them.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
If there is an audiobook I will listen to it, maybe even look for a review that tells me what heppened. If I really do not remember and really want to continue with the story, I´ll reread it.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I simply say I am not the kind of person who ends books to everyone, and throgh in what my parents always say: he/she who lends books is not very smart.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I will pick up a manga or a graphic novel.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Probably one or two.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
If I was really dying to read them and I did not buy them becuase of the hype, I will read them in less than a month.

Ella (ellsbellsbooks) | 9 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

Just pick out what looks interesting I guess!

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I'm learning to DNF so I probably put it down. But if it's not very long I'll probably finish it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Usually I'll read something small (like the Penguin Little Black Classics) or spend every waking moment reading and trying to finish as many books as possible.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

Gaaaaaah I don't cope really. Though when I was younger I owned a combo of the UK and US editions of A Series of Unfortunate Events but I was more fussed about knowing what happened next as opposed to how it looked. I suppose now I keep that same mindset with a smidge of annoyance that it doesn't match. But overall it's the story that matters.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Probably my friend Kat or my mother. People who can put up with my rants basically.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Sacrilege, but I've never full on cried while reading a book. I've teared up many a time but to stop myself from overflowing I often think of something stupid, such as my granny's one liners.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

This happened with ACOTAR, I reread the first book before ACOMAF came out and then reread them both before ACOWAR came out. So the answer to this question is yes.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

Generally I'm okay with people borrowing my books, as long as they are returned in the same condition I lent it. However, there are some exceptions.
Such as my nice editions, they don’t leave the house.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

Sometimes I just go for something completely different. Maybe the slump is because of reading a lot of the same thing. Sometimes I go for something 'easy', usually something I've read and loved before. More often than not I message my friends and my mum and ask what I should read. They usually have good suggestions.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

Considering I'm on a book-buying ban this year, I've bought a grand total of two books that were published this year. But on a normal year, a lot.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

A loooooooong time. I have books from 6 years ago that I haven't looked at since I bought them. Hence the book-buying ban, so I can actually read the books that have been neglected for so long.

I'm always ahead.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
So rarely buy books

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

Khristina (readingreckless) | 33 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I would just pick whichever one was available at my library first

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I love myself too much to read things that I don't like. I don't like DNFing books, but I will

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I just get a lot of audiobooks and binge or hole up in my house and read

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
It's not about the beauty of the books to me. It's about the words on the pages. My bookshelves are very mishmash.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
No one really. Reading has always been a very solitary thing for me, which is why I'm glad I found Goodreads.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
This happened to me at work yesterday. I just did it. My boss was very worried. Listening to sad audiobooks during work hours is not recommended.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Maybe read my notes on it or my review. Maybe some spoilers, but no. I don't really like rereading

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? I tell them that the books are a part of me and they are written in so much, it's not worth it.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Read a sappy, cheesy quick read. If I can get myself feeling accomplished, it kicks me back into high gear.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Maybe 2. And then request the rest from my library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Not long at all. But at the same time, I own them so there isn't any rush.

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
- Reading. Challenges. It's basically the only reason I do them (aside for the endorphins from completing them). They help me decide what I should read!

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
- I would have quit the book long before I got to halfway. Life's too short to read bad books!

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
- Absolutely! I ignore my family and friends and get some easy, quick books in the mix.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
- I don't usually purchase series books, so.. This is not a common problem for me, but I feel like I would be ok with it either way.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
- There's always someone in my real life book club that hated a book as much as I did! The real issue I have is when I love a book that no one else seems to love.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
- Cry, baby, cry! This always seems to happen when I'm driving or when I'm in a doctor's office.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
- I try to! It depends on the series and if I can find a good synopsis online.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
- Oh I love loaning out my books! I rarely say no! But when I'm recommending books, I won't offer my own copy if I know the person is unreliable... I'll recommend the library lol.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
- Reread a book I loved! It seems that I reread a lot in August and September because those are hectic times for work and I like to have the comfort of knowing I'll love the book.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
- Very few. I only get new books if they are a BOTM club pick or if I have a gift card. I may try to grab them used down the road though. It also helps that my library is very good on holds and I never have to wait long.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
- Sometimes, I start reading them immediately. Sometimes, they have to wait a year. Depends on how pretty the cover is hahahah

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I am trying to read all the books I own first.. But I am also trying to read around the world and there are several lists I am trying to work on.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
Usually I finish it anyway. Rarely do I not finish it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Pick smaller fiction books! But if I read most of the books I own, I am okay with not finishing this year.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
Meh- it's okay.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I don't have too many people to discuss books with. But I can tell the people at work, because they are stuck there! LOL

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Wipe my tears and pretend I'm not crying

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? Probably not, I usually remember after a bit.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? After I read a book I usually don't care about keeping it. But I might say I'm going to read it and hope they forgot

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? Find a quick, light read to get me back on track.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? Not many, I usually get mew books from the library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I have books I've owned for years, and then I buy a new book and read it right away.

message 22: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

I have stacks of books that are my tbr lists and I just pick one depending on what mood I am in or if there is a prompt I want to fill.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?

I skim at that point, trying to see if there is a part where it gets better. If I do find a part where I get back engaged, I will start reading at regular speed again. If I don’t, then I skim to the end.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

It honestly depends on how many books are left and if I can finish them in a calm manner. Otherwise I will just say ‘oh well’ and leave the challenge how it is.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

I have some mismatched series, usually more hard cover vs paperbacks. But, so long as I can read the series, I don’t really care.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

I have some people that I can rant to, they might call me crazy, but they will still listen. I am also well aware that sometimes it is just me, lol.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?

Usually it is only a pricking at my eyes, but sometimes I will pause to regain my composure and distance.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

It honestly depends on the book. If I really loved it, then I will reread it unless I had only just read it a short time ago. If I didn’t really love it and it would be a slog, I would just read the next book.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

I would just say not at this time and then never bring it up again. Or, depending on the person I will let them know that I don’t like lending my books.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

I would find a book that I want to read, which generally would mean going back to rereading Discworld.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

Not many of them. I try not to impulse buy books unless they are from the used bookstore. But, if I really am interested, I would get them from the library to try them out.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

It depends. I have had books that have waited over 5 years for me to get to them, and then there are books that I start right then and there.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I sometimes feel like this is how many are on my actual TBR. It might be something that fits my mood or I will try and pick something to fit a prompt. I am often distracted by the new and shiny though. So I don't really have a method.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
It depends how long it is, I would have usually given up before halfway if it's not great. If I'm that far it might have merit...

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Graphic novels and novellas!

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I'm not that bothered about matching sets.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I just wait until I find someone else who doesn't like it and then we can have an amazing shared moment, because we thought we were alone!

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Blinking. Lots. Or pretend it's either hayfever or a cold.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Usually no, there are lots of great bloggers who do recaps so I look for one of them.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I'll buy them a copy.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I find if I do something else (play games, watch a tv series) then eventually the groove will come back.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
All of them. OK, maybe half? The local charity book shop loves me!

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I have got so much better at this recently, I try not to buy anything I don't intend to read within a month. Maybe 75% of the time I stick to that, otherwise it might be years, but I get there eventually. I like having a personal library to pick from.

Edie | 1143 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
The next read for my book club... or a book that checks off a prompt for one of my challenges... or a book I have been dying to read.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
-I am a keep committed person, especially if it is a book I am reading for a prompt.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
-Fortunately, I have not had this problem. That said, I probably wouldn't work to catch up which might make reading a chore rather than a pleasure.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
-Well, I read series from the library and would be unlikely to notice that they didn't match, so no coping would be necessary.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
- This is when the forums around books are helpful. Surely, there is someone out there that feels as I do.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
- crying over a book is okay

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve
forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
- I might read a synopsis on Goodreads and some comments, but no rereading for me. There are too many books I haven't read.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
- Not an issue for me. I am at a stage where sending my books to another reader is a pleasure and frees up my bookshelves a bit.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
- I pick up that 6th book I have been dying to read or pick something randomly from the library.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
- Other than buying books for my book club which is housed at Parnassus our wonderful, independent bookstore, I get in line at the library for new books

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
- Not long, since I am buying for a book club meeting that is coming up within weeks or a month or two.

Set it aside!

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Probably yes, with more audiobooks, shorter books.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I'm fine... I don't tend to collect.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
People on bookstagram, unpopular opinions are generally shared by someone.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Throw on sunglasses?

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Probably no, but look at some reviews for the first.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I'm holding it for someone else.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Go to a favorite genre or something totally new and different.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
New releases typically come from the library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
A long, long time.

Kathy E | 3310 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Whatever strikes my mood. I have books divided up by genres so I'd probably think about if I want a classic or a mystery or whatever and go from there.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
Mostly committed, but I have DNFd 3 books this year so I have quit a book.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes, shorter novels, say 300 pages and under.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
Doesn't bother me.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
That's a tough one. If I find one person who agrees with me, the bonding starts. (e.g. Gone Girl, which I hated)

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Pretend I have something in my eye.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
I'd probably start the sequel to see if it covers a bit of what was in the first book.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I'd probably tell a white lie about someone else waiting for it.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I cry. That's what happened to me this spring. I ended up listening to a few audiobooks and that got me on track.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I usually don't buy new books.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I buy used older books and they sometimes sit on my shelves for years.

Debra Barstad 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next? I read books that I need for challenges and if I find I have extra time than I just randomly let good reads pick a book for me

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? No I never let a book go

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I do a massive personal read a thon lol
4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? just keep reading anyways

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? Look for other that dislike the book as much as I do if not I don't let it bother me.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? I have yet to find a book that makes me sad to the point of crying so not sure

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? No as the next book will help me remember once you start to read.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? Sorry but I can't borrow that book at this time because I don't like lending out my books they mean too much to me.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? not sure as I have never had that problem

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?it all depends that is what libraries are for so you don't have to buy so many books.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? depends on how high the interest is. but if I really want to read them I will start at the top and work my way down.

message 28: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I try to read the books that fit a challenge first, and then whatever I can get hold of from them library. Or I sort my TBR on GR in by all the different options, and go with the book at the top of one of the options that I want to read most at that moment.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I keep reading on it a bit at a time but I start other books. I find it helps if I set myself a target to finish it. For example read a chapter/ X number of pages a day. The Pickwick Papers is the only book I have DNFd.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes, I would probably listen to audiobooks to catch up as much as possible, and then try to complete any remaining prompts the next year.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? I don't have a problem with this.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I'm sure there are other people on GR who share my dislike of certain books.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? I probably would stop reading.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
No. Normally reading a review of the book on GR is enough for me to remember what happened.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? I don't have many friends who are readers. Or if they do read, they read books that I'm unlikely to buy. I'm happy to lend books to my sister and my mum, because I know I'll get them back at some stage.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? I will focus on the five books one at a time and read a bit every day until it's finished, whilst listening to audiobooks / reading other books.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? I am trying to not buy as many books at the moment, and use the library instead, so I only buy books I can't get from the library,.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? Too long! Although this year I have slotted all the books I own into prompts for various challenges, so by the end of the year I should have read all the physical books I own!

Nancy (nbaker) | 0 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next? I skinny it down to "this year" and then randomize it

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? I am somewhat committed to a book. If I don't like it I will force myself to finish (after all that next chapter could make everything better) but I do have a few books that are just too intense for me to read all at once and so I read a little bit more when I can.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how? If its only a few books I try to find ones that fit the challenge but are shorter reads. If I am VERY behind I just let it go and work on finishing it in the new year

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope? I go old school and cover them

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? I keep my thoughts to myself, but I don't lie if someone asks.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal? I just cry. lol who cares what others think.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it? I don't re-read, but I do skim through the last bits to refresh where we left off

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? I just say that I am sorry I do not lend out my books

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump? Read something totally different - like a graphic novel

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying? 4 (usually have budget constraints lol)

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them? max 2 days - one day to finish what I am already reading and then 1 day to decide which one comes first,

- I'm committed (for the most part)

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
- Depends on how much behind i am, but generally no.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

- I try to read the crying parts in bed.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
- It's unlikely that I would have forgotten, unless it's been a decade or more, in which case I will read it.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
- I will lend it out and diligently follow up to get it back.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
- By reading an old favourite or something I know I enjoy.

- Typically one, I prioritise.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
- I don't buy books in droves (except once when I went to a bookshop that was closing down and getting rid of its books at a real deal, when I lost my mind and bought 30 books at one go!)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I'm a nerd, so I use a random number generator to pick stuff from my TBR.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I'll put it down and go to something else, but maybe come back to it later. It's very rare that I officially DNF a book.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I hope it doesn't come to this, but I'd probably slot in non-challenge books I read over the year that fit the categories.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I mostly read on Kindle, so the covers sometimes change anyway. It's annoying.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I'll go on Goodreads and look for two-star reviews.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I'm a quiet crier, so I just let it happen. This has happened to me with audiobooks at work.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
If I loved it, then yes.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
If they have sentimental value, I will explain that.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Pick up a short story collection. That usually helps.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Most of them -- I'm a big ebook/audiobook reader, so I don't worry about space.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Sometimes years. Depends on when the random number generator selects them.

Martha (marthag503) | 513 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I haven't run into this problem in a while because I do some planning ahead and I have a TBR jar to use in case of decision block.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I'll put it down if reviews of the book are similar to how I feel about the book. I'll push through if I think I could possibly change my mind. I've often been surprised by books I've initially disliked and then pushed through to find the book is one of my favorites.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I strategize to see if I have a book to fit a prompt that might be shorter. Sometimes I just resign myself to the fact that I won't finish a reading challenge.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I won't go out and buy a new copy, but I will look in a used bookstore for a match.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Book social media or I just keep it to myself.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Put the book down until I'm home. If I can't wait, I might take a walk. I do almost all my reading at home so I don't have this problem.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
This has come up several times for me in the last year or so. I find it pays to reread or skim the previous books I don't remember.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I just say I don't lend books because I've had bad luck getting them back, or I'll deflect the question by saying the library has a good collection.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I had one of these recently. I just ride through the slump. Rereading a series I love has helped get me back into reading again. Some reading events (seasonal challenges, new books for summer) have helped too.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I try not to buy hardback books. My library fills the need to read the books I'm dying to read.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Too long! I just finished one of those and it took me 2 years to get to it.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I read from the one's that have been on there the longest, fit a prompt, are new this year, sometimes just one I've really been wanting to read.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
Usually - committed.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Yes. Audiobooks while doing everything, not initiating social time.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
My Anne of Green Gables series from childhood doesn't match, and though it irks me every time I look at it, I haven't bought the books to fix it, just silently stew.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
This recently happened and one of my co-workers also did not love it - I was so excited! Otherwise, I just don't talk about it.
edit after reading Marin's above: I definitely read others' 1 and 2 star reviews!

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I cry and try to be discreet about wiping the tears.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
No. This happens to me all the time, but I usually look up the plot summary online.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
Hmm...I haven't had this issue. Interesting to think about. I get it though, I lent a book to a friend years ago and every time I'm at her house I think about sneaking it into my bag. I could just ask for it back, but I haven't yet. I do check to make sure it's still on her bookshelf, but I don't know what I'd do if it wasn't!

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Read something fun or easy or a favorite genre. YA dystopian or those books that would be made into a rom com.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Probably none. I've converted almost entirely to library. I try to put myself on the wait list when I first hear about it. Our library also buys extras of popular new releases so they're pretty easy to get a month or two out.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
If I bought them, I'd read a couple right away, and then up to three years. I try not to have books on my TBR longer than that, though a few have snuck through.

Samantha | 1565 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Good lord can't imagine that is a very useful list, I might have to delete them all and start over using the first book as my next read. Or I sort by newest to oldest and start looking at some of the recent publications. I tend to read mostly recently published books think that would be easiest. But would have to to have a serious talk with my self about how that list got so out of control.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?

It kind of depends, I am in that situation now. The book is short and for a ATY prompt that I had a hard time finding a book for so will finish it to be done with the prompt. But in general if I am not liking a book I have no qualms about DNFing it.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

I would try to finish, I got behind last year and started listening to audio books speed up and got really choosy what I was going to read so that I was eager to pick it up and would choose reading over other activities.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I got rid of most of my physical books a few years ago so only have a few with sentimental value. So because I have them for those reasons I would keep um. If I did have a library of books I would have to have them match.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
My cat? Perhaps find a reviewer on goodreads that had similar feeling and comment on their review in hopes of striking up a bond.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Been there, I am pretty good at not crying but I am ok if a few tears slip out. I am looking down who's going to notice. If it seemed like it could turn into an ugly cry I might look up and stare at something a bit to get it under control and potentially put the book away.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
I find that when I start a sequel often a lot more of the previous book comes back to me. I am not sure I have ever been in a situation that I couldn't recall a book I loved but maybe I would reread it.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks? If it was one of the books I have I would simply tell them why I have an emotional attachment to the book and that I would be too worried about it to let out of my house. I don't know a lot of readers so this isn't something I have to worry about. If it did happen I would probably buy a copy for whoever want to borrow my book.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I often start reading good reads and hearing what people are saying about books and it gets me excited. Or I will try to find a good thriller because those often are what I am really wanting to read. Audiobooks help me a lot and sometimes I just have to accept I am in a slump.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
More than likely none. I just put them on hold at my library. I have two library's I can use. One lets me put holds on before publication and the other the day of. Often I can get new books quickly. I also have a subscription to scribd and they have a lot of new books both audio and ebooks so that helps. If I got desperate I might buy one.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
If I buy a book I want to read it now so it would be something I would start the moment I bought it. If not then it is going to come from the library or scribd. If it came from the library I either read it or it gets returned so it kind of forces you to decide what you are most excited for. It also helps to have the ATY challenge sometimes trying to fill a prompt makes the choice for you.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I have no real way to choose. Sometimes if I have a challenge almost finished that's missing one or two prompts, I might look for something that fits. I might pick something from the 1001 lists I'm working through. I might pick up the next in a series. Or just pick something that I just want to read.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I keep going. I've only abandoned about four books in my life.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Depends how close I am, I pretty much just push through, otherwise I just don't stress. If I finish, I finish.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I don't cope. At all.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I search out snarky reviews on Goodreads and revel in them.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Hope that I can put on my sunglasses without looking like a twat. If not, try to fight it.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Nope.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
Unless it's something irreplaceable, like a book from my childhood, I don't say no. It's just a book, I don't get too tied up with stuff like that.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Listen to an audiobook, push through one of those five just to give me a sense of accomplishment, read a graphic novel, read a fun book with the Spider, read an Agatha Christie, read something totally out of my comfort zone. I should follow my own advice at the moment.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
None, because I almost always have no idea what's coming out soon.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I tend to go overboard with those one buck used booksales ... I still have lots of them on my shelf after some years ... 🥺

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

Try reading something I normally would never pick.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

very few. I mostly lend.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

anywhere from 1 day to 2 years

Tawallah | 0 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I look for a Goodreads Challenge to help me prioritize my reading.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
It depends, but I tend to stay committed after all I reached halfway, maybe it gets better. Or I will rant about it in my review.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Of course I try to catch up. Short reads are the best way. And audiobooks.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I try where possible to buy matching covers. But if not, I will wait for a good edition second hand book. Failing that I may ignore the covers.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

Goodreads is always good at finding others who share my views and restore your belief in other readers on bad books. No matter what the majority say.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I close the book, may sure no one is looking at me and try to get a grip. I finish the rest of the book at home.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

I re-read the first book.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

Suggest the library may have a copy.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Pick up a mystery novel or watch Youtube.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

I read the samples to see if the writing works for me. I listen to reviewers I trust with similar tastes. I wait for a sale.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

Recently, I have been picking up some as soon as I get them. Some are still languishing in my room. For years.

Andrea | 456 comments 1. I base my reading decision upon access, deadlines, and mood.

2. I will finish a book regardless of my opinion. I think that it is important to determine exactly what it is that I like or dislike about the work.
Will I read another book by the author or in the series? It is very unlikely.

3. Last year, I faced this very challenge issue. Just before the deadline, I ran into the basement and unearthed books packed away by my grown children. Fortunately, I was able to find shorter selections that I had not read and fulfilled the unfinished tasks.

4. I probably would not tolerate a set of mismatched covers and would search for matching editions or a newly released, complete set of the series.

5. When I do not share positive feelings about a popular book, I will express my opinion IF ASKED. Otherwise, I let my rating reflect my feelings and/or make a private note about it.

6. I do not cry easily. When this happened at the dentist's office recently over a magazine article, a few tears escaped. It may explain why I received extra Novocain and could not feel my face for the rest of the day, lol!

7. When there is a extended period of time between the releases of a book and its sequel, AND I am excited enough about the sequel to search it out, then I will rely upon the sequel to refresh my memory.

8. I have books that I will lend and those that I will not lend. If someone wishes to borrow one that I will not lend, then I say that I am sorry, but it is one of my special editions and offer alternatives. Such book-loving friends should understand.💗

9. I have not hit a true reading slump. I suppose that this is because I do not view reading as an obligation. If I feel like reading, which of course is most of the time, then I do it. If I don't, then I don't.
I do not have a go-to author for such an occasion, but I do have a copy of Early Riser sitting next to me, so I feel prepared!

10. When there are multiple releases-of-interest scheduled, I make sure to submit early library requests for them or to look for them in my "Book of the Month" subscription.

11. I am a relatively slow and easily distractible reader, so newly purchased books can sit on my shelf from several minutes to several months.

Jill | 725 comments 1. You have 20,000 books on your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Usually I use my TBR to fill Reading Challenge prompts. It is probably why I do so many reading challenges.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I depends on a few things. If I have read less than 100 pages I will keep reading. If I still not loving it I kind of evaluate why I am not loving it. If it is offending me in some way (over use of offensive language, etc.) I will abandon it but with most books I keep, reading. I feel that the author worked hard and I should give their work respect by finishing it even if it is not necessarily my cup of tea.
3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? If so how? Since I do anywhere between 4-5 reading challenges a year I am usually behind on at least one of them. When that happens I will go through and change up the books by either picking shorter books or choosing books that fit prompts on multiple challenges.
4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
It doesn’t really bother me.
5. Everyone and their mother loves a good you do not. Who,do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I am pretty honest with my friends about the books I don’t,like. I share with them why and they tell me why they love the book. I have been pleasantly surprised to find some people who have not liked the books for the same reasons I didn’t like the, I love the discussion of books period!
6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I usually cry and if somebody asks me if I am OK, I tell them why I am crying.
7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out butmyou’ve Forgotten s lot of,what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Yes, every time. I have been in the process in the last year and a half of rereading all the Outander books I/n anticipation of book 9 coming out at the end of this year. I am up to book 7 on this reread.
8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
Most of my books are ebooks borrowed from the library so I don’t have that problem.
9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I go back and reread a favorite book or two. That usually does, the trick.
10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
None, I borrow everything from the library. I am on a very limited income so I try to stay away from buying books, otherwise I would be broke.
11. After you purchase all of,these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
My library hold system has turned a into a bit of a puzzle. I immediately put everything on hold and then I go around suspending holds until I think I will,be ready to read the book.

Sara (phantomswife) 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I plan my year ahead in December so there is always a next book up on my list.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
DNF. Never used to, but life is short--got to read the good ones.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Read every chance I get, but realize it is okay not to finish the challenge, the point is to read.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
Not a problem.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
You don't have to like everything the other guy likes, and sometimes the difference of opinion is what makes the best discussion.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I bite the inside of my lip...if that doesn't work, I just have to close the book and take a break.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Yes. I frequently re-read the prior books in a series, which is why I hate to start a series that is still being written.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I just say I don't loan them if it is a book that truly matters to me. If it isn't, I give it to them and don't worry if it doesn't come back. I have been known to loan a book and then buy myself another copy.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
I get an author I know I love, or I re-read a book I know I loved.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I never buy new books. Just cannot afford them. Its the library or used books for me.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I have been known to buy lots of books I want to read at a used book sale and then have them sit for literally years before I can get to them. I also have books on the kindle that have been there that long. ((sigh))

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
I’m always doing challenges so I use challenge prompts to help comb my tbr for books that fit.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I used to always finish books, but I’ve stopped and it’s made reading so much more enjoyable to me. I used to force myself to finish and it would take forever to get through a book I hated. I rarely come across something that I dislike enough to not finish, but when I’m really not feeling a book I will put it down. Sometimes I end up coming back to it later sometimes not.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I do try. I will read shorter books in genres that I know I enjoy. During the first maybe 3/4 of the year I will sometimes pick up more stuff outside of my norm (and have found a ton of books I love this way), end of the year I will go back to what I know I like because they are easier reads for me.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I might try to find the matching covers if they are different versions, but unless it’s HP It’s probably not going to bother me too much.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Worse case scenario I’ll just complain to my mom about it. She’s not a big reader and will always let me vent lol

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I cry? I’m the most emotional person and everything makes me cry so I’m used to it.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Yep.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
Tell them I’m sorry, but I dont let anyone borrow my books. Suggest borrowing it from the library.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Read something by a favorite author.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I tend to use the library a lot. I will buy books that I forgot were coming out and didn’t get to put a hold on if the wait time at the lib is outrageously long.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
It honestly depends on the book. Sometimes I read them right away, some can sit on my shelf for years.

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
It depends. Sometimes I use a challenge prompt, other times I fall in love with an author/series and will continue with them. A lot of it is mood dependent - am I in the mood to learn about something, hear about someone’s life, get lost in another universe, or have a good cry?

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
It would depend on how long the books is — if it’s a shorter book I will likely finish it. If I’m not loving it because I’m not in the right mood then I’ll set it aside for another day. I don’t know that I’ve ever DNF a book yet.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
This is really my first year of challenges so I’m not sure how I’d handle that!

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I don’t really care. I own the complete Harry Potter series and they don’t match (some are hardcover and some are paperback — and those are different editions).

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I’ll likely look online to see if anyone else agrees.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Cry 😭

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Most likely. I may start a chapter or two and see if it jogs my memory if I’m really eager to start.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I’m not very good with no. I’d likely say that I’m currently reading it and hope they forget with time!

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Re-read a favorite. Stop trying to force it and watch a good series.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
ALL OF THEM!!

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
I might start it instantly. It might sit on my shelf for a year 😬

message 44: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?

My challenges usually help me to determine what to read. Also sometimes the buddy read schedule. Read-a-thons also help. I usually try to read smaller books for them so I can help out more with the prompts.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?

I'm committed because sometimes it turns around and it ends up like not what you expected. Fates and Furies I was tempted to stop but when I got to the second half it was a whole lot more interesting! I think because of that book I end up sticking with books. Usually I don't get the same result as Fates and Furies but it is always fun thinking there might be a huge twist.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?

Yes I usually try to catch up by reading the smaller books and maybe changing my books around that I originally picked out. As I'm going along through the year I don't count all of my books for the challenge as I go and if I look back some that I didn't count can go towards a prompt I hadn't finished yet.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?

So my daughter and I have this problem with the City of Bones Series. I've been looking for them at used book sales. I haven't found them yet though. She likes the new covers and I like the old covers. We have the series split half and half.

As a side note I absolutely hate the movie covers of books. I always try to buy the original cover before it was a movie.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?

I'll end up telling whoever read the book but not do it in a way that belittles why they liked it. Everyone is different.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?

I try not to bring those books out in public. But I have been caught off guard and I just hope people don't notice. It's hard to stop reading when it gets that emotional.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?

I sometimes go back and skim it and if it was a library book I get the previous book out of the library in case I need to consult it.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?

I haven't been able to say no and I've lost some good books - dang it. If I really loved them I'll re-buy at a used book sale.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?

I'll usually try to find a romance or suspense one to get me back in the reading mood.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?

I don't buy books that have come out in the current year unless I really loved the series or something. Most of the time I can get the current year books at my library. For whatever reason my county is pretty easy to get a book. I'm hoping that doesn't mean that no one in my county reads - ha ha. I can find a lot of current books at the goodwill stores or used books sales. I buy a lot of books for $1, with gift cards or on a decent clearance sale at Books a Million. I try not to pay more than $5 for a book. I also get a lot of them at Christmas for gifts. Since most people ask for suggestions in our family I just load them up with book suggestions for me.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?

Unfortunately they can sit there for 2 years or more. For whatever reason the ones I've bought recently I've been getting to quicker.

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
In a word (well, two words): reading challenges

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I rarely stop reading a book without finishing it, unless it’s something I find offensive or upsetting.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I try to catch up, maybe by reading some shorter books or easy reads.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
Unless it’s the Harry Potter series (I *love* the original cover art) it won’t bother me.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
I probably moan to my husband about it. Or just search out one star reviews on Goodreads and nod in agreement.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Look nervously at my feet and hope nobody notices? I actually can’t remember the last time I read in a public place so this doesn’t happen to me much.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Probably not, unless it’s been years since I read it. I want to read the His Dark Materaisls trilogy (Northern Lights, The Amber Spyglass and The Subtle Knife) before I read La Belle Sauvage but I’ve only read the first book so far and I don’t know how much longer I can wait to start La Belle Sauvage.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
Most of my library is ebooks so I can’t lend them anyway.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Poirot. Never fails to drag me out of a reading slump.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
Toooooooo many! Although I do try not to buy new releases as I’m not made of money they’re usually so much cheaper if I wait a few months.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Well, I have a copy of The Name of the Rose that’s been sitting on my shelf unread for practically my entire adult life, so it can be quite a while! Most books I buy I’ll read within a year or so though.

message 48: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments 1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
My reading is usually decided for me: By my next review deadline and when the next book is due back at the library ;)
Other than that I go by mood and try to mix up my reading, so following a heavy read, a lighter or shorter read, mix up genres etc.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
When I have read a half book I will usually finish it. I might give it a break and read something else before going back to it. I usually give a book 50 pages before I put it down if I hate it, that is way before the halfway mark (unless it is a really short book in which case I will just finish it).

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
Last year was my first year of reading challenges. I was behind on popsugar, so around November I switched out some planned longer reads with shorter reads, like children's books and graphic novels. I didn't finish ATY but I only joined halfway through the year, so I didn't plan to.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
I don't! I hate that. Especially when there is a height difference, arghh. But if it's all I have I'll live with it.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
Well, I know people who reads very different books, so I'll always have someone to vent to. Usually my friend Louise or my husband, but colleagues and other family members or friends as well.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
I wipe my eyes and tell them I am okay if they ask :) This actually happened to me at work once: It was a quiet day in the children's library and I looked at some new books, fell into reading one of them and it was about a girl who was bullied and contemplated suicide. Suddenly a woman was there, and she was very concerned about me, and I had to tell her the book made me cry.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
I'll probably read a review/ summary and then I'll remember most of the time. If it's a book I own I'll keep it next to me and skim it if I come across things that confuse me. I have a good memory of plot lines, but names of characters and their character traits is a bit harder I think.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I don't mind people borrowing my books, unless there is a really good reason to say no, like I am about to read it myself in which case I'll just tell them. I do make sure to tell them to give it back though (and not to dogear pages!).

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Read something short so I will feel accomplished! I always have several books going at once, and this helps get me out of reading slumps.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
I don't buy many new releases. I'll buy them later if I love them, or when I go crazy in the bookstore. I will carry waaaay to many books home with me from work (the endless place of temptation, the library, aka my work).

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Way too long! (This is both the library books and the purchases)

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next?
Honestly, this is pretty much the reason that I do reading challenges. I like prompts-based challenges because they give me a bit of direction and help me narrow down what I want to read next. I make a plan for the year, and then mood read to decide which order to read them.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
I think it would depend how much I'm hating it. I've only ever DNF'd one book. Usually I try to push through it, especially when it is a book that counts for a challenge so I don't feel like I've wasted the time I've put into it so far. I also always tend to hope that the end will get better.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
I definitely do try to catch up as much as I can, using short books or graphic novels. I always struggle with it a bit though because I can't shake the feeling that it is cheating to switch things out toward the end of the year like that just to finish in time.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
It annoys me, and I would make an effort to get matching copies if possible when I bought them, but if I can't I would just deal with it. The contents are more important to me than the cover.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
A year ago I struggled with this question, and I'm still not sure. I don't have that many people in real life that I regularly talk about books with, so probably some of my Goodreads friends.

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
Stop reading and escape until I can calm down, but this has never been a problem for me. It's rare for me to literally cry from a book, and I'd be very embarrassed to cry like that in public because of my socially anxious tendencies.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
Depending how much I can remember, I'll either re-read it or at least find a very detailed online summary and read that instead. I tend to wait until series are finished before I end up reading them, so I often end up binge-reading.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
I wouldn't say it's necessarily polite since it's lying, but I've told people that I can't find the book or that I've already lent it out to someone else. I hate lending out my books because I've become more picky about keeping them in good condition over the years.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
Re-read a favourite, or try some short books so I at least feel like I'm making progress. Or, I pick up a book that I'm super excited about and hope that the slump doesn't bring me down about it.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
It's still pretty rare for me to buy new releases because they are so expensive, but I do look out for them on Book Outlet. There are usually a few books in the year that I really want enough to pay full price for, but that's probably somewhere around 4 or 5 books.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
Way too long! I literally have stacks of books from Book Outlet waiting to be read, and still more than half of my challenges this year involve books that I'm getting from the library instead. If it's a book I'm really dying to read, I might read it right away, but otherwise it can be a very long time.

- I primarily use reading challenges to prioritize my TBR. I also do buddy reads sometimes. And, I also go with my gut, so if I feel reading a particular book, genre, book length, etc, then I'll go for it.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed?
- I think it's a case-by-case basis. If the book is for a buddy read I'll finish it, or if I'm curious about the ending but don't like the reading experience then I'll just skim through until the end. Otherwise, I've grown more comfortable with abandoning books that I don't like.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how?
- I try to catch up, but if it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out. I use the challenges to help me prioritize my TBR books, so even though I feel bad not completing my challenges, I try to remember that the ultimate goal was to decrease my TBR, which was successful even if the challenge wasn't.

4. The covers of a series you own and love do not match, how do you cope?
- eh, it's not ideal, but I just accept it.

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings?
- I don't usually have anyone in real life to bond with unless the book was for my book club, so I usually just look at the low ratings on goodreads lol

6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?
- I wouldn't cry in public so this isn't an issue even if the book is sad. Worse case, I'll just pause in reading until I get home where I can better process what I'm reading.

7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. Are you going to reread it?
- Nope. I just power through, even though admittedly I don't alway follow what's going on. This is why as much as possible I try not to read book that I know will have sequels until after all are published.

8. You do not want anyone to borrow your books, how do you politely say no when someone asks?
- I just say "no". I'm generally open when it comes to someone borrowing a book from me, so if it's a specific book I don't want to part with I have no problem saying so, in a nice way of course.

9. You have picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over this reading slump?
- I'd try to find short, easy reads that drive forward and are not too dense. Or I'll switch to an audiobook. I also tell myself that's it's okay if I'm in a slump and to accept that there are naturally lulls in my reading habits. If I take the pressure off of myself to read voraciously all the time, then it feels less like a chore.

10. There are so many books coming out that you are dying to read, how many do you end up buying?
- Well, I'm technically on a "buying hiatus", which so far just means that I buy less books that I would usually. I just add the books I want to my goodreads TBR and after the buying impulse passes and if I still want to read them, then I make a deliberate decision to either buy or borrow from the library.

11. After you purchase all of these books that you’re dying to read how long do they sit on your shelves before you get to them?
- I first started buying books for myself in 2015, and I still have books from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 on my shelves. But, I'm trying to make sure that all books purchased in 2019 are read in 2019, while slowing reading through the backlog. We'll see how that goes.
