NetGalley

Feed Your Readers, the NetGalley Challenge

Duration: Monthly

How to Participate:

The NetGalley Challenge is designed to not only get you to read your NetGalley books, but to also advertise your reviews for others to see because after all, that's what NetGalley is all about.

Though you may pop in/out at any time, the NetGalley Challenge will run on a monthly basis so you are able to see progress being made.

1. At the beginning of the month, post any/all of the following:
a: How many books on your NetGalley shelf
b: What books are on your NG shelf
c: What your Netgalley feedback ratio is

2. During the month, read the NetGalley books that you can AND update your post with your reviews. (You can do this after each book or wait until the end of the month.)

3. At the end of the month, update your post and with:
a: What books you read
b: Link(s) to your review(s)**
c: Your updated shelf count
d: Your updated books to read
e: Your updated ratio

Then start a new post for the next month!

But Wait, There's More

Do you ever get so caught up in your reading that you don't want to stop to write your reviews?

Thinking about that, it was decided we need a "Review Weekend", once each month, set aside to write those reviews you've been not doing in favor of reading!

Review Weekends will vary randomly each month and is meant to be a time set aside to review. Take one, or both days and get caught up on reviews so you can spend the rest of the month reading!!

The next Review Weekend is set for June 14/15

**When linking your reviews, please link only to the book(s) here at GoodReads. At this time, linking to a personal blog is not allowed. Thank you!

Kristie | 3595 comments I've been doing so well not requesting anything, but I got two today. The Grace Year is currently a read now. I've heard good things about this one so I figured I'd give it a try. It doesn't come out until September so at least I have a little time to read it.

I received a few widgets lately that I've been ignoring while trying to clean up my shelf. One widget was for The Long Call, which I received back in April and just accepted. This will be my first book by Ann Cleeves.

Vicki Willis | 496 comments I just added 2 more.

The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen I love this author! I was so excited to get this one. This is not one of her long time series though. I am curious to see how it is.

Big Sky (Jackson Brodie, #5) by Kate Atkinson And dang it, I didn't realize it was a series. It is book number 5. It publishing this month! I don't want to go back and read the first 4. Has anyone read this series? Can I just jump in and read it? I suppose if I like I will have to go back and read the others!

Oh no Vicki! Always frustrating when that happens. So annoying netgalley don’t show when it’s a series book.
One of my GR friends has read it. I’ll ask her if they need to be read in order

Response from my GR friend about Big Sky:
"I read the previous books years ago so didn’t remember much about them at all and it didn’t bother me. I think this would work fine as a stand alone"

Lexi | 4247 comments I just got a new book that I really want to read - The Tea Dragon Festival but since it is a comic, it is too big to download with my Wifi in India.

She's So Cold: Murder, Accusations and the System that Devasted a Family She's So Cold Murder, Accusations and the System that Devasted a Family by Donald E McInnis
A different type of true crime. Instead of focusing on the crime, it focused on the justice system's treatment of the children falsely accused and its process.

This one sounds interesting, Vicki. I don't read much true crime, but ones that focus on the legal system seem to fascinate me.

I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

I thought it was a fun, easy read, but nothing super special.

well done Kristie. I have none on the board for this month so far :o

Kristie | 3595 comments I'm visiting my grandson and we didn't bring any children's books with us to read. He likes to download NetGalley books to my Kindle when this happens and chose The Rug Bear. Unfortunately, the book is a protected pdf (I wish they'd tell us ahead of time!) and I couldn't get it to load with the laptop I have with me. So we downloaded To Catch an Elephant instead. It was just ok IMO. We'll read The Rug Bear in a couple of days when I can load it to my older laptop.

To Catch an Elephant by Vanessa Westgate The Rug Bear by Emma Rattray

Kristie | 3595 comments Read The Rug Bear with my grandson today. We thought it was really cute. I'm surprised the ratings are so low. I will admit that the "rhyming" didn't flow very well, as the rhyming words weren't always in the correct place within the sentence, but the story was cute and fun.

I liked that it was just something light. I think a lot of children's stories lately have more adult concepts and the writing can be somewhat serious. I don't have an issue with those books, but sometimes I feel like they are written for the adult reading more than for the child. This one is the equivalent of a beach read for kids.

Kristie | 3595 comments I also finished Recursion. Recursion by Blake Crouch It wasn't as good as I expected it to be. It was enjoyable, but had some issues that I couldn't overlook.

Lexi | 4247 comments Well, under better late than never, I just finished my last March 2019 book. I still have April and May and June books and three from 2018 but hey, March is done.

I'm doing pretty will with 2019 books. I have 3 that have already been published in May or June that I'm working on, then I should be current (temporarily, I'm sure). But, I also have 4 still that were published before 2019. Chipping away at them slowly but surely.

It's been really difficult not to request more and to ignore widgets. I have a couple of widgets that I really wanted to accept, but didn't, and I just got another that I may accept but it's long and I already have another book that publishes on the same day. Ugh, I must stay strong!

Well done Kristie and Lexi!
I haven’t paid much attention to NetGalley of late. Need to get back on the bus!

This was the widget I just received. It sounds really good.

Michelle | 465 comments I'm about to go on a requesting spree. . . wish me luck!

Quick question tho, how many books have you been approved for?

I've been approved for 60 and honestly I think it's a little low lol

Well I just went and had a look - 147. That’s since I joined in 2014. I tend to keep my shelf below 10 books though so don’t go on too many request sprees. I’m sure some others have much higher numbers!!!

message 47: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I've been approved for 161, but that's also since 2014. I also try to keep my shelf limited.

Have fun with your requesting spree!

message 48: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 465 comments Oh, I only joined in 2016 haha. Having a limit seems like a good idea, I might set up one.

Fortunately (or unfortunately lol) the spree didn't get too crazy and only requested a few books. (:

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments I've just made the mistake of checking back to when the Netgalley Challenge started in April 2016 and it seems I had 22 books on my shelf. I now have 78 (plus three requests pending and a widget I'm trying to decide whether or not to click on).

I'm not entirely sure this challenge is helping me keep my shelf under control :P

oh, I've been on Netgalley since 2015 and have been approved for 313 so I have reviewed 235 which seems ok. I've had 75 requests declined
