Nileema | 150 comments I think 'Vinegar Girl' by Anne Tyler is a good option for anyone considering it! It's a nice, light retelling of Taming of the Shrew and is a v. quick read too.

I didn't enjoy Cinder by Marissa Meyer at all, so I won't be picking up the second in the series. Instead, I think I'm going to try either Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly or Tidewater by Libbie Hawker, which is a retelling of Pocahontas.

Wintersong (Wintersong, #1) by S. Jae-Jones

message 103: by Kimber (new)

Kimber (kimberwolf) | 845 comments I only have a few recommendations, but they are some of my favorite stories:

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart
Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood

I have Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld on audio from the library, ready to start on June 1.

I've also put the following on hold and if I'm able to get them in June, I'll read them as they come in:
Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley
The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley

message 104: by Karin (last edited May 27, 2019 11:37AM) (new)

Karin | 9210 comments I might read a retelling of an Icelandic saga, if I like it. While it's y/a, it's not a happy tale. Hush: An Irish Princess' Tale. I was trying to find something that is not a fairy tale (btdt so many times) or an Austen retelling (tend to dislike those a great deal.)

BUT, if I could remember the mystery series I have read two books on with characters from Shakespeare, I'd check and see if the next one has been shelved retelling. I think I read one or both of them when I was doing a LOT of reading for games or even that summer I read so many books here.

message 105: by Nicole D. (new)

Nicole D. | 1573 comments I love biblical fiction - one of my favorite authors in that is David Maine

The Preservationist - about Noah and the ark
Fallen - Cain and Abel
The Book of Samson - obvious ... :)

Please note that they are irreverent

Red Tent is a favorite, Secret Chord was fascinating (I had the opportunity to visit City of David last month, which was epic!)
Loved The Testament of Mary as well

The Goose Girl - young adult FULL CAST audio is fun! (actually probably younger than young adult ... still fun)

I may do Hood - I have the audio - seems to be my only option. I really wish they'd let us check books on our shelves with the tags. How hard would that be???

Have you read any of the Sherlock Holmes retellings? I have this one on my list: The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

Good to know about Vinegar Girl... it has gotten pretty 'meh to 'blah reviews. I can tell it will be fast so I might fit in another Shakespeare retelling if I can.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Ok, I've decided I'm reading Vinegar Girl, final decision. Meli, let's go watch 10 Things I Hate About You, haha.

If I have time, Ayesha at Last just got put on my radar, and happens to be a retelling also. It comes out June 4th, and is touted as a Modern-Day , Muslim P&P. If I have time, I'd LOVE to squeeze this in also.

No. Is it differently written from the originals? I have only read one of his novels and didn't care for the writing very much. That said, we quite enjoyed the y/a Enola Holmes novels (his much younger sister) when my kids were the right ages (or at least one of them was).

The Laurie R King books are a reimagining of Holmes with a female partner. (And Holmes is older.) They're set in the early 1900's and came to my attention when I was looking for fiction that included the women's suffrage movement. The second book in the series deals with it.

I'd be interested if we can get a buddy read together. I was going to read it with one of the classics groups, but I think I missed the window.

Great. I got my Trim book out of the way already, it was quick and wonderful. I need to finish a very long book with another group first, but if I'm lucky, by the time the new book comes in I'll be ready.

Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 611 comments Retellings I'd recommend are:

Cold Mountain
The Watch
Netherland
Hearts in Atlantis

In honor of Tony Horwitz, I'm going to read his book Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War, which is essentially a retelling of a retelling, if you think about it. I SERIOUSLY doubt I'll have any extra time but if I do, I'll try to read Cold Mountain, as a companion to Confederates...

message 141: by Jgrace (last edited Jun 18, 2019 10:00AM) (new)

Jgrace | 3935 comments Ack! I've finished two books for this tag; Wide Sargasso Sea, which has been on my TBR forever, and The Silence of the Girls, which will also work for Greece, although I wanted something more modern.

Now, I have tooo many choices left to read before the end of the month. All of my library requests came in faster than predicted, not to mention the books already on my kindle that are getting great reviews here this month.

These are the titles that are making the most noise:

The King Must Die
Fire from Heaven
The Penelopiad
The Song of Achilles
Spinning Silver
Bitter Greens

I've already returned Educated ( for the 2nd time, isn't that sad) because I knew I wouldn't get to it.

I need a longer month.

message 142: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12568 comments Well I added two of those my TBR shelf.....They all look so tempting!
