Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments Hi everyone. Here are my August reads:

Top Reads

The Last Voice You Hear by Mick Herron The Last Voice You Hear
Mick Herron
Another great read from this author. While the plot was pretty low on the plausibility scale I thought the writing was excellent and the characterizations spot on. The pace of the book was quick and the last quarter of the book was very intense.

Blood Moon An Inspector Hal Challis and Sergeant Ellen Destry Investigation by Garry Disher Blood Moon: An Inspector Hal Challis and Sergeant Ellen Destry Investigation
Garry Disher
Top shelf police procedural set in Australia. This is one of my favorite series since I really enjoy seeing how the characters change and grow from book to book and the various plot lines are always well done.

Good Reads

Mr. Mercedes A Novel by Stephen King Mr. Mercedes: A Novel
Stephen King
An enjoyable suspenseful ride which was greatly enhanced by the narration of Will Patton on the audio version.

The Hanging Garden (Inspector Rebus, #9) by Ian Rankin The Hanging Garden
Ian Rankin
One of the better books in the series so far. While I still don't really like Rebus he is a pretty fascinating character.

Hunting Season (Anna Pigeon, #10) by Nevada Barr Hunting Season
Nevada Barr
A decent audio but not one of the better books in the series. While I'm sure in real life the Natchez Trace Park is very nice neither of the books set there have done much for me. The plot in this book seemed especially weak and it is never good when I figure out what is going on before Anna. The best part was the narration by Barbara Rosenblat who always does such a good job with this series.

The Handle (Parker, #8) by Richard Stark The Handle
Richard Stark
Parker is back on the job, this time he is to hit a casino on an island off the coast of Texas, and enlists Grofield, who had quite a large part, to help. While Parker is all business Grofield, who is an actor when not working criminal jobs, helps lighten up the mood a bit. A good fast paced listen narrated by Stephen Thorne.

Labrava by Elmore Leonard Labrava
Elmore Leonard
While I would not rank this among the author's best works it was still very readable and entertaining. The main character was a bit distant but I was intrigued with the older movie actress who specialized in film noir and the characters who populated the South Beach setting.

Boom, Baby! My Basketball Life in Indiana by Bobby "Slick" Leonard Boom, Baby!: My Basketball Life in Indiana
Bobby "Slick" Leonard
One of my favorite characters in basketball. I was so glad that he finally got inducted into the Hall of Fame this year especially since he is over eighty years old. An entertaining, though not the best written, memoir of his basketball life.

The Lincoln Lawyer (Mickey Haller, #1) by Michael Connelly The Lincoln Lawyer
Michael Connelly
A nicely done legal thriller. I always enjoy reading about smart guys who know what they are doing and Mickey definitely fits the bill. The plot was not very believable though but the pacing and the writing were both very good. Listened to the audio version which was read by Adam Grupper who performed admirably.

Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio by Amara Lakhous Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio
Amara Lakhous
While there is a murder investigation this is really more of a look at Rome and the various types, both immigrant and Italian, that make up the fabric of the city. A quick read, the story was both funny and depressing in equal measures.

Nights of the Red Moon by Milton T. Burton Nights of the Red Moon
Milton T. Burton
Entertaining read featuring a small town sheriff in East Texas. The main character was a real operator, though perhaps a little too good to be true, and I enjoyed the authentic seeming locale.

OK Read

Beware the Solitary Drinker (Brian McNulty, #1) by Con Lehane Beware the Solitary Drinker
Con Lehane
Set mainly at a bar in the Upper-Westside of NYC this book was as dark as the barflies pasts. Brian McNulty, the bartender, decides to start looking into the death of a damaged young woman who frequented the bar and manages to stir up quite a lot of ill will along the way.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17113 comments Good looking month, Sandi! I agree with you on Hunting Season, it wasn't one of the best in the series. I gave it an 8 of 10 which for me is pretty low, books that would get a lower rating usually don't get finished. I thought I was one of the only ones who don't quite click with Rebus, the two books I read are good but they didn't compel me to keep going.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1812 comments Great variety Sandi! I've been trying to download some audio books from my library but they just won't do it. So I'm jealous of your great audio books :)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17113 comments Susie: hope you can figure out the downloading, library loans are a great way to try out audio books from a lot of authors. Are you using Overdrive or Hoopla, or ?

Hope you are able to download audios from the library sometime. My library has Overdrive and it is usually problem free. We also have Hoopla and I've never been able to get it work though.

Amy | 1346 comments I told my daughter about Hoopla. I hope she can get it to work because the radio in her car is broken and she is in the middle of a book.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1812 comments The problems come when I try to transfer to my device. I think it's One Click Digital...or something like that. I've tried my Sansa and my Ipod, but it always quits before it's loaded. I'm going to try again this week. Right now I'm listening to something on a Playaway. I wish there was a bigger selection from my library :)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17113 comments Susie: Are you sure you have enough space on your device to hold the full download? I have found when the download stops in the middle that is the case.
It looks like One Click Digital is another "always available" service similar to Hoopla. I don't know why, but Hoopla rarely will download fully for me or if it does, the download won't "stick" for the following day on my iPhone. It works fine when I can stream on WiFi.
Perhaps it has to do with the different delivery method. Does your library also offer Overdrive?

Susie, I wonder if your library can help you troubleshoot? In my local library one of the librarians is a techie and she holds occasional classes on how to use the various digital resources. I wonder if there's someone at your library who would sit with you and figure out what's going on.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9549 comments Oh, and another excellent month of varying reads, Sandi. I'm impressed that you often sneak in a sports-related read with your mystery/thrillers.
