30.9 - Mazza1's task: JUST READING

This is a two book task with a page count of at least 600 Pages.

I run a real life book club. We are a very varied group with members aged 20 – 70 both male and female and a wide range of interest. Some have said we focus on women’s literature but I think we have covered every genre. We pick books 2 months in advance to give members time to access and read the books. We have one rule - nothing over 500 pages. Like most reading groups we have had both hits and misses.

Book 1 - Read any book that fits SRC rules that we have read in our Leeds Book group (Good Reads in Leeds) (up until July this year).
Required: State the month and year that we read the book in your completion post.

Book 2 – Read a book that you need to read for your IRL book club or the BOTM of one of your other Goodreads Groups. For the purposes of this task, a Goodreads Group book of the month (BOTM) must be shown on the group's homepage under Currently Reading for the month of June, July, or August. If you do not have an in-real-life (IRL) book club or belong to another Goodreads Group that has a BOTM listed under Currently Reading on the group's homepage, choose a group from the Groups page and read a book they are currently reading.
Required: State whether the book you read was for an IRL book club or for another Goodreads Group. If the book is for another Goodreads Group, state the name of the group and what month the book was their book of the month when you post.

Optional: Go to the help thread for this task and let me know if you'd recommend this book to Good Reads in Leeds. If you have any good questions for our reading group to discuss, I'd like to hear those, too!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments WHAT DOES WORK

Any book showing on the home page as "currently reading" for your GR groups works.

*****CLARIFICATION OF ABOVE
my intention with this task was to get people reading and discussing a specific book for an in real life (IRL) or online book club during the summer SRC season. For an IRL book group, please choose a specific book that the group is reading for June, July, or August. A Goodreads Group book of the month (BOTM) must be shown on the group's homepage under Currently Reading for the month of June, July, or August, While it is preferred that you read it along with the group during the same time period, it need not appear as "Currently Reading" at the time you post. You must, however, include the information required in the task (i.e., the name of the group and what month the book was their book of the month). *****

Your IRL book club does not need to have a link or webpage for it to work

I can recommend some good groups if you are interested
Nothing but reading challenges is great
You'll love this one
Pick-a-shelf
Around the year in 52 books is fab for those of you who love challenges but doesn't do BOM

As for book 2, I'm in the Cozy Mysteries group. They don't have book of the month per se, rather a featured author. June is Maddie Day. We're supposed to pick any book by the author and read it...does this count?

For book 2 i think it would have to be an identified book on the group home page - I have had a look at the group you link and Flipped for Murder or .A Tine to Live, A Tine to Die would work

I cannot get onto this site without joining and I don't want to join and then leave just to validate your choice. My issue with picking just one off a bookshelf containing the total output of one author is that it is not being discussed as a BOM where everyone is looking at the same book.

However my honest answer is I am unsure I have messaged one of the moderators to get their opinion and I will let you know as soon as I can

Thank you for looking into this.

To clarify, this is not a shelf of a single author's works. In post 5, I believe you said that the book that was posted on the group's home page is acceptable. In my group, the current month's books are posted on the home page AND are placed on the shelf I linked. So, this shelf includes books other than the current month's books. The book placed on the home page is the author's book with the most ratings. During the course of the month, we read any one of the author's books. We discuss what we've read in the monthly thread.

Hi Susan my intention was to get people reading Books that they had to read and discuss for a real life or online book club in this summer SRC season - so June July and August. So IF the book you choose comes up on the home page under currently reading in June, July and August it works otherwise it doesn't.

Susan My only concern is that you are choosing a book group to fit the book that you would like to read rather than picking one that currently fits the task from your current groups. It feels a little like manipulation of the task.

Are you only in the one group? If so and it picks authors rather than books you could use the link provided in the task to choose from other groups.

LOL! So true. I hate book clubs...that's exactly what I'm trying to do, but only if it is within the bounds of the task. I don't like being stuck with someone else's choice of a book for me...feels too much like school! (I know...it's a challenge, but I'm only willing to push my boundaries so far and a limited number of times. Give me a theme, I'll pick the book and be happy. Give me a book with no choice and I hate reading it.) So...if you are in a group with a book club you have to do it, but if not, then you can choose from the whole wide world of reading clubs? Bad luck for me.

I am in 7 groups, but I'm only active in two other than this one. One of those has a AOM, one does not have a reading club. I have no idea if the other groups have a BOM, but I'll have to look into it. I understand the goal of this task now and I promise to stick with it if I do the challenge this round.

Thanks for your patience and help.

(ETA: 2 of my inactive groups host a BOM!)

I love my book clubs I am in 3 IRL and yes I have felt your pain I will never get back the hours it took me to read On the Road or The Handmaid's Tale by the same token I would never have picked up The Color Purple or A Clockwork Orange on my own and thoroughly enjoyed both. I hope you find something that you enjoy

message 16: by Aprilleigh (last edited May 20, 2019 12:46PM) (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments For Book 2, can we use titles from this group for this task? I suspect most people will use their one title for Task 20.10, but can we chose a second title from this group for this task?

What about a group that selects 4-5 books each month (every January, April, July, and October we select one 600+pp title that stays on our "currently reading" shelf for three months)?

Does it have to be a June, July, or August selection, or can it be any title on their shelf as long as it identifies when it was read?

For IRL groups, do they have to have a presence on GR, or a webpage that indicates the current title(s)?

Sorry for all the questions, my brain went completely nuts with this task, then I sat on it for a couple days and decided I had questions before I could make a decision.

message 17: by Marie (UK) (last edited May 21, 2019 01:51AM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments For the purposes of this task it must be June July and August showing under currently reading so the group that selects four times a month the July choice would definitely work.

It has to appear on currently reading at the time you post so if you read an April book (in a quarterly book club) it would have to be showing on currently reading when you post.

As per SRC rules you cannot start a book before June unless it is OVER 500 pages and you may only Read HALF the book before the start of the season.
So a 600 page book that you are more than 300 pages into would not work.

As the Task says "your IRL book group or for ANOTHER Goodreads Group" I am going to say that you cannot use a group read for for the SRC .

ETA -my intention was reading for an IRL book groups there has to be an element of Trust in the SRC after all you are not really completing the challenge if you just say oh I do this and you don't

I am in 3 IRL book groups 2 of which I can link to via the internet. The 3rd is run by my local library it would be more difficult to link to.

message 18: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments As it turns out, my local library does post the upcoming reads on the website, I just needed to figure out where - to use one of those I assume I would link the webpage? Only one of the June books has been posted because the other two groups haven't met yet this month.

I'll likely just choose something from the June, July, or August selections from my other GR group. We're pretty active and one of the upcoming reads was a book I nominated.

As far as the quarterly long-read goes, I never read those over the full three months. Taking that long to work my way through a book would drive me nuts. That group doesn't have a reading schedule, we just add to the conversation as we go through the month or quarter (although our discussion threads never close, so I could read a book that they read two years before I even joined GR and people would happily participate in discussing it with me). It's a terrific group, no pressure no judgment, just a love of classic books.

I belong to six IRL book groups. (Not all of them read every month ... two take a hiatus over summer)

NONE of them has a website.

Must the book be a selection for June/July/August? Could it be for September? (I can only manage 6 IRL clubs because I read in advance ...)

Is it enough for me to tell you that my Tempo Book Group is reading and discussing
In the Distance in July?

It has to be June July and August. There is no requirement to link to a website of the group.

There is an element of trust in the SRC that you do follow the rules for each task. As long as a group IRL is reading your book in the months stated it works.

I may use my library book club read which can't be linked to a website

The Peter Swanson July book I haven't fitted to a task yet but I will

Rina | 565 comments IRL the only book club I'm in is something I would translate as a "wandering/travelling" book club:
Each month one member, who is responsible for this month, posts a list of book suggestions, the other members vote, so that a book of the month is chosen. The member who posted the book suggestions then buys the winner book, reads it and mails it to another member, that member reads the book and mails it to the third member and so on.
Does it count as a book club for this task or should I go with the GR group option?

Susan A | 1666 comments There are a lot questions & answers here and in reading through them, I feel like I'm either misunderstanding things or the answers aren't consistent. There seems to be different answers for IRL life book clubs and GR groups, so maybe I'm mixing up the answers.

1. I asked if I could join a new group post 12. I thought the answer was no in post 13. If I am in any group other than this one that has a BOM, I cannot join a new group. Yet in post 26, you seem to say it's okay to look into new groups. Which is correct? Can I join a new group?

2. From post 17
It has to appear on currently reading at the time you post

but in post 28 you seem to be saying that you can read June's book in July or August...in which case it may no longer be showing as currently reading. Can I read a group's "currently reading" book after the month ends? And do I have to get it noted like a MPG?

3. In post 2:
WHAT DOES WORK

Any book showing on the home page as "currently reading" for your GR groups works.

To me, this means I can pick any book showing on a group's home page, even if it is not part of a formal BOM. My group Romance Readers Reading Challenge has books showing on the home page, but they do not have a BOM club. Are these books eligible?

That's fine. I have several GR groups to choose from. The IRL group I'm in is one where we share a synopsis of what we read, within a theme, rather than everyone reading the same book. I thought the spirit of the task was to participate in your group or club. This is kind of a different type of book club, though, so no problem.

We have tried several different ways of picking books we used to choose a genre and then vote between the suggestions given but we found that we were picking books to fit a genre and not necessarily because we wanted to read them.

Now different members put forward suggestions they should have the book they suggest on their bookshelf at home or have been wanting to read it Annihilation wasn't a favourite but i think it got picked because it was different from the others we have had recently.

The group is large (over 100 members) although we limit attendance to 25 and maybe only 30 - 40 come on a regular basis.
