Meg (makeli2) | 2322 comments I'm reading A Zany Slice of Italy (Italian Living Book 1) by Ivanka Di Felice A Zany Slice of Italy, a non-fiction book about a Canadian couple's one-year trip to his father's hometown and beyond. Fun and funny insights abound, as well as not-quite-so-funny, such as dealing with bureaucracy, workmen, and such. (Having grown up in a somewhat similar country I'm totally getting it.) A nice little detour from cozies.

I actually got my old copy of the book out this morning and read it to my cat! She sat on my lap, looking at the book and seemed quite content. I think I'll run an ad in the paper and offer my services for "Pammy's Storytime For Pets!" See, this winter has finally caused me to crack!🤪😃😄😂😊

😄😂😆 That's one cool cat! And, hey, you never know, you're service offering just might take off!

I never did have my own copy of that book. I remember reading it quite a few times at the library. I grew up in the tropics so reading about snow was endlessly fascinating. I finally had a taste of it while living in Europe, and wowed by it. Well, except for slipping and sliding on ice!

PamG (lynguy1) | 975 comments I don't usually start a series with #17, but I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. What fun characters! Christopher Fowler blends wonderful humor, an odd mix of characters, multiple mysteries, and some London history into a terrific crime novel.

Pam — Take heart, warmer days are coming! After two weeks of subzero temps, we hit 46F here on Tuesday, losing two inches of our sixteen-inch snowpack. I walked three miles on a local trail yesterday, and there were tons of people out. 35F with clouds and a lot windier today, which means more melting, though not as much as yesterday. Which is a good thing. We’re ready to lose some of the snow and ice, but don’t want flooding.

We've had 57 inches of snow here since the week before Christmas. I actually feel strange now when I'm not shoveling. It is warmer today, which is causing a rapid melt and lots of wet and muddy spots. I am also hoping we do not have flooding, as they say it will be a rainy weekend. At least I can be inside reading! March is frequently snowy here, so we'll wait and see if we break any snow records this season. We seem to be headed that way.

I've been eying this series for awhile. I've read others by her and she's a great writer. I also have friends who also love this series... maybe I should just do it!! lol

Pamela— Yikes! That’s more snow than we’ve had all season. Our seasonal average is around 50”, we’re currently at 43.1”.

message 1412: by Meg (new)

We're getting flooding over in Coffs Harbour (NSW Australia), and by golly it is WET! Even had a train derailment in the rural Orara Valley. (containers - all people ok). Mother Nature isn't fooling around.

PattyMacDotComma I finally read the first book of the much-loved Monkeewrench mystery series by mother-daughter duo P.J. Tracy. People and plot were every bit as good as I was told. I'm delighted there are more!

PattyMacDotComma Heartstone is the fourth in the excellent Matthew Shardlake historical mystery series set in King Henry VIII's very bloody England. Author C.J. Sansom seems to know his stuff (excuse the academic terminology) about the wars of the time.

We hardly had any snow last winter. Only about 5 inches all season, so we more than made up for it this season.

Meg — As long as temps stay 30-40F and the melting is slow we should be okay, though crossing streets is tricky right now. The corners are all 2-3 foot wide, inches deep slush pools. Which is why I decided to stay in and do the bike today, lol.

Patty — Glad there were no casualties in the train derailment! Mother Nature definitely seems ticked off lately, and is spreading her wrath around.

Pamela — I guess you did, in a BIG way, lol. Stay warm and cozy!

Wise choice to stay inside on the bike! My friend and I always walked on the local nature trail, but now we can't even tell where the walkway is located! We won't be able to get back to that anytime soon. My exercise now consists of shoveling snow! I've noticed that people who walked their dogs every day are nowhere to be found. Even the pets can't get exercise. I only have indoor cats. Their exercise consists of jumping onto my lap and walking to their food dishes. Oh, and jumping onto my paperwork and books when I try to focus on that! 🐈🐱☺

PattyMacDotComma Six Word Story: Stories, Memoirs, Poems and Jokes all written in only six words. is the second book of clever, quirky "stories" by Doug Weller. There's a competition you can enter, too. Fun to try making them up.

Have just finished The Warden by Anthony Trollope for a classics group read. There are many who live Trollope, but while there were some amusing names (eg: a general attorney named Haphazard) and passages, I found it fairly average. Great book for improving one’s vocabulary, though.

message 1428: by Meg (new)

Meg (makeli2) | 2322 comments I still haven't read Anthony Trollope. I might give a different one of his a try sometime.

I finally got to I'd Rather Be Reading The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life by Anne Bogel I'd Rather Be Reading. It was great fun! I saw myself all over that book.

Same here! I loved that book, and found much in it I could relate to—though it’s a bit dangerous to one’s TBR list/shelf.

lol, so true! Everytime she mentioned a book that sounded even remotely compelling I was tempted to jot it down. I'm happy to say that I made it through without a list. However!....it's not to say that I won't go back into the book and look them up later.
