What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please sign up in this thread with the answer to the following question:

✱✱ What is your favorite Easter Candy? ✱✱

A - Chocolate Eggs
B - Marshmallow Peeps
C - Jelly Beans
D - I don’t like Easter candy

✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱

IMPORTANT DATES
Sign ups will remain open until March 24th (5pm Central Time).
For your convenience a Time Zone Converter.

You’ll have until March 29th (6pm Central Time) to make your recommendations.

Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.

If you’re new please read the PIFM Guidelines and FAQ. If you have any questions that are not addressed there, please feel free to ask!

Please note that late sign ups will be included at the host's discretion and no one will be included after re-picks are assigned!✱

Mary-Megan | 2325 comments TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Mary-Megan | 2325 comments Picking Rules

Easter is on April 21st and whether you celebrate or not, you can’t get away from reminders of the holiday. Let’s take a look at some of the things generally associated with this holiday.

The Easter Bunny: Much like how Christmas has Santa Claus, children line up in malls to get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny who will leave them baskets of goodies and hide eggs in their yard on that special day.
Recommend a book that either:
🐰Is tagged paranormal or fantasy or
🐰Has only a man on the cover or
🐰Features children or students or
🐰Has a couple embracing on the cover

An Easter Basket: Sometimes the best part of a holiday is the goodies you get, right? An Easter Basket is given out on this day filled with goodies - usually chocolates and fake grass that gets everywhere.
Recommend a book that either:
🍫Is a standalone book or
🍫Is shelved as YA or NA or
🍫Has an outdoor scene on the cover or
🍫Has a green cover

Egg Hunt: Aside from leaving a basket, the Easter Bunny tends to leave eggs hidden around the yard for children to hunt. Coloring eggs is messy yet fun tradition.
Recommend a book that either:
🌼Is a part of a series or
🌼Has a character with a secret or
🌼Is tagged suspense or mystery or thriller or
🌼Has a brightly colored cover

Marshmallow Peeps: This sweet treat used to only be available at this time of year. Peeps began as yellow chicks but soon began being produced as bunnies and in a number of other colors.
Recommend a book that either:
🐤Features a close group of friends or
🐤Has over 1,000 ratings on Goodreads or
🐤Is a friend-to-lover romance or an enemies-to-lovers romance or
🐤Has a yellow, blue, or pink cover

Family dinner:What major holiday doesn’t include a family dinner? Lamb and/or ham are most commonly served at this meal.
Recommend a book that either:
🍞Features a family or siblings or
🍞Is funny or written by an author that makes you laugh or
🍞Has food on the cover or someone who works in the food industry or
🍞Has a dark cover (blacks and browns)

Church: Given that Easter is deeply rooted in religion, a number of people attend church this holiday. Easter Sunday is one of the most attended church services of the year.
Recommend a book that either:
⛪Is a clean/wholesome or historical novel or
⛪Has been on the TBR list for a long time or
⛪Features royalty or a wealthy character or
⛪Has a building on the cover

Easter Bonnet: Since Easter might be the one time some people go to church, they tend to dress up more than normal. For young girls that used to mean getting an easter bonnet to wear with their pretty new dress.
Recommend a book that either:
👒Has a woman in a dress or hat on the cover or
👒Has someone who works in the fashion, movie, or music industry or
👒Has a 4.0 rating or higher or
👒Has a cover with pastel colors

Lamb: The lamb is a symbol of Easter due to the religious connection. As mentioned before, lamb is sometimes served at dinner or you can find cakes shaped in the form of a cute little lamb.
Recommend a book that either:
🐑Has a sweet or innocent or naive character or
🐑Features animals in the story or shifters or
🐑Is tagged western or takes place in a small town or
🐑Has a white cover

**Please make sure you pick 4 new-to-them books and 4 from their to-read or preferred shelf for your pickee. If a preferred shelf is given, at least one book must come from that list! Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance.**

**Also, please limit picks to 2 per rule. Too many books can be just as bad as not enough. We don’t want to overwhelm our readers and make their reading decisions harder.**

MountainKat | 31593 comments So this was the funniest thing ever...

My boys (Hubby, older son and younger son) took a package of Peeps and put it in the microwave and started it. This was one of the 4 packs, still sealed in the wrapper. The Peeps started to puff up, the package started to bulge and they were all gleefully watching. The laughter increased as the package swelled to impossible sizes and when it burst they lost it. Practically rolling on the kitchen floor with laughter. I nearly peed my pants just watching them! (Full disclosure: They did ask and I agreed as long as they cleaned it up - and they did. They still talk about it today!)

That said, GIVE ME ALL THE CHOCOLATE!!

Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

My favorite bit of Easter is Iron Chef-ing the leftovers into yummy things like Quiche Lorraine or Pea Soup or stuff like that.
Do you guys do anything interesting with your leftovers or have a favorite family tradition?

Oh also this time of year is THE BEST because of that one Cadbury commercial from like 1985 that they play now, where they are interviewing spokes-animals & the bunny 🐰crushes it❤️. Love it!

0 picking Thanks!

I hope you enjoy your picks!

The Easter Bunny: check out the next chapter with the Sin brothers in Sweet Revenge by Rebecca Zanetti or see what happens when the MC is forced to take a job helping a stubborn alpha male's nephew in Wrecking Ball by P. Dangelico.

Sweet Revenge (Sin Brothers, #2) by Rebecca Zanetti Wrecking Ball (Hard to Love, #1) by P. Dangelico

An Easter Basket: I always enjoy reading more about Eve and Roake in Holiday in Death by J.D. Robb or check out a great YA trilogy by Jennifer Estep with Cold Burn of Magic

Holiday in Death (In Death, #7) by J.D. Robb Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade, #1) by Jennifer Estep

Egg Hunt: You've enjoyed the previous books, so keep going on this series with Big Bad Beast by Shelly Laurenston. Or get a little role reversal when the warrior is female in To Woo A Warrior by Jane Cousins.

Big Bad Beast (Pride, #6) by Shelly Laurenston To Woo A Warrior (Southern Sanctuary, #1) by Jane Cousins

Marshmallow Peeps: Check out a very dysfunctional family with
Paper Princess by Erin Watt (a pseudonym for Elle Kennedy and Jen Frederick). Look into a town advertising as the breakup capital in Cure for the Common Breakup by Beth Kendrick.

Paper Princess (The Royals, #1) by Erin Watt Cure for the Common Breakup (Black Dog Bay, #1) by Beth Kendrick

Family dinner: Great romance by Kristen Ashley with an alpha male and a female finally coming into her own in The Gamble. Fun romance with MC coming home to help her parents and hooks up with her high school sweetheart in Getting Schooled by Emma Chase.

The Gamble (Colorado Mountain, #1) by Kristen Ashley Getting Schooled (Getting Some, #1) by Emma Chase

Church: The oldest book on your TBR is Nice Girls Don't Live Forever by Molly Harper. Or check out cop Lily Yu investigating a case and investigating the local werewolf pack in Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks.

Nice Girls Don't Live Forever (Jane Jameson, #3) by Molly Harper Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks

Easter Bonnet: I think since you loved Elle Kennedy you will also love Kylie Scott so check out Lick where a night in Vegas ends up with the young, whole live planned heroine married to a rock star. Or check out the theater scene in London where two actors have to fake a relationship to improve the hero's publicity in Act Like It by Lucy Parker.

Lick (Stage Dive, #1) by Kylie Scott Act Like It (London Celebrities, #1) by Lucy Parker

Lamb: We have a naïve Valkyrie getting kidnapped by a alpha werewolf in A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole. You must check out more Ilona Andrews! I love all her series so picking one for you to start with is difficult. Her most well known is Kate Daniels, but the first book is a little hard to follow with all the world building - Magic Bites, but the series has finished (10 books), gets better each book and has an epic romance eventually.

A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews
