Thanks, YouKneek! I’m on the app ATM and for some reason the link just defaults to the main page.

Well I was complaining that my horror trial books weren't horror enough, I got my dose of real horror :D
Jacqueline wrote: "50 Shades of Grey started off as bad Twilight Fan Fiction."Ending up as bad fiction.
I'm only a couple hours into Midnight's Children. It's quite wry and satirical so far, but I'm waiting for it to go from historical fiction to more fantastical, and I'm beginning to think I might more or less just get hisfic. Which is okay, just have to rearrange my expectations.
I jumped into a BR of Dream Quest, too. I'm not hooked yet, we're still in the "starting the quest" part of the story and that's almost never a part worth lingering on, IMO.
(Phrynne, *I* liked Gideon! It was a strange, humorous tale!)

Glad to have been of service ;p
Diane wrote: "Yes, I read the thread. Unfortunately, not much of a discussion, no. Hoping the Sword and Laser discussion is more comprehensive."If you scroll to the bottom of any GR book entry, there is a list of all relevant discussions. There are 29 topics for Downbelow Station, though most are on small details by Sword and Laser.
@Trike, I’m really enjoying On the Clock. It’s a little longer and more detailed than Nickel and Dimed. The methods of timing/enforcing productivity that she describes weren’t in such heavy usage at the time of Nickel and Dimed so I think the experience of low wage workers in fast food, call centers or warehouse work that is described in On the Clock is probably even more stressful than the work experience of Barbara Ehrenreich. And learning about how labor is treated in Amazon’s Fulfillment (Warehouse) Centers is something everyone who uses Amazon Prime should probably read.
I really ought to use the desktop version of GR more. You don’t really know what you’re missing on the app. (Except the very obvious linkage problem).
Finished Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

My library loan is coming up in a couple weeks and yours is the first review I’ve seen to really praise the book. I am trepidatious.
Just completed The Bone Witch. Kind of underwhelmed. I think a big part was the narrator giving the main character a very whiny tone. Don't think I'll be continuing the series.I've downloaded The Goblin Emperor, The Princess Bride, and Pawn of Prophecy to try to knock out more of the group's reading list. Hope these are more worth it than The Bone Witch.
I personally liked all of those much more than Bone Witch, so I hope you're in the same boat, Karen!
Yeah. Unfortunately Goodreads only allows you to have 100 folders and Sword & Laser ran out a year or two ago. So I had to start consolidating all the old reads into one folder per year.
I did try to tag all the threads with DBS as previously mentioned, and I set the thread book as well. Not sure if the latter helps in searching but that is why those threads all show up on the book page though.
Reading this trilogy:The Bloodbound
The Bloodforged
The Bloodsworn
they're readable but nothing out of the ordinary. Had a bit too much romance for me. I think people who liked the Lightbringer series might like this one.
Trike wrote: "Phrynne wrote: "Finished Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

I think the people who don't like it just shout louder. It has an average rating of 4.3 so I am not the only person who likes it🙂
Karen wrote: "I've downloaded The Goblin Emperor, The Princess Bride, and Pawn of Prophecy to try to knock out more of the group's reading list. "I just started Pawn of Prophecy, and it's very fun so far. And The Goblin Emperor is a favorite. Hope you enjoy!
Diane wrote: "I really ought to use the desktop version of GR more. For some reason, my phone browser is defaulting to the app format, and that means I almost never visit GR when not on a desktop.
On the topic :D I've semi-interrupted Zone One (which was going slowly at the best of times as it was) to get started on BR A Little Hatred. What my imagination had cooked up for a grimdark style is different than what I'm actually getting, which is a good thing--I was expecting to be appalled or grossed out and am mostly amused.

Currently reading Lightbringer and picked these up in a Humble Bundle. Will give them a try later as on a mission to get The Sixth Sense challenge to 100.
Funny grimdark is interesting sounding, Beth! Aiden, I hope it's the good slow :) The enveloping "please never end" slow and not the "why isn't anything happening" slow!
I'm 1/3 of the way through The Goblin Emperor and so far not really into it. Does it improve? One book I am loving is Scythe. I know it's YA but great concept. I've enjoyed many of Neal Shusterman's other books over the years and didn't have any worries that this one wouldn't be as good. Plus, many of the teens that come into the library have read it and recommended it.
Just started Gideon the Ninth. Liking the main character’s sarcasm. Also very excited because The Outside just became available at my library today. So many books checked out...not nearly enough reading time.
Finally finished this trilogy:The Bloodbound
The Bloodforged
The Bloodsworn

The ending was a bit contrived and rushed, but at least everything didn't end happily ever after. If there's another book or two set in this "world", i'm not going to be visiting
Karen wrote: "I'm 1/3 of the way through The Goblin Emperor and so far not really into it. Does it improve?"It stays pretty much the same throughout. I gave it a soft 3 stars: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Trike, thanks for your input. In reading your review, I was agreeing with you and realizing that I don't want to continue in something that is just meh. One of my rare DNFs I guess.

I recently read The Goblin Emperor. The entire book is court politics with character growth. If you’re not digging it by now it may not be your cup of tea.
I enjoyed
The Fifth Season, book one of The Broken Earth Trilogy. Have started book two,
The Obelisk Gate.
Allison wrote: "Love those books, Eric!! Hope you continue to enjoy :)"Thanks! Nora Jemisin has quite the imagination and unique writing style.

I had some quibbles with some aspects of the world building that didn't make much sense to me, but I was able to mostly get past that to enjoy the story.
Waiting for the third book to come out so I can finish the series.
Pure chance that I read When Gravity Fails by George Alec Effinger directly after "Chabon's Yiddish Policemen's Union" (it was free for kindle unlimited and on our shelf). I liked the Effinger novel a lot better. It is also crime noir, set in a specific cultural/religious community (here Arabic instead of Jewish) in a Cyberpunk future. Even though the end was a bit so-so the atmospheric prose was good (and thankfully free of the over-description that drove me nuts with Chabon). So for anybody who wants to read a SF crime noir - go for Effinger.
Invisible Planets: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation I read as BR here in this group and I was thrilled! Each story is high quality writing and most of them touched and fascinated me. A clear recommendation for everybody who loves good SF short stories. The next volume went straight on my TBR (and only the price detained me from getting it immediately)
The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson was a wonderful novella set in the Cosmere. I listened to it in the collection Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection which contains several short stories set in the different worlds of the Cosmere. And now I have to figure out how to find the other stories on my audio files cause the chapters are numbered from 1 to whatever without any indication where one story starts or ends (^^'). Some stories I can't read yet, cause they contain spoilers for the respective series they are set in.
Anna wrote: "Emperor's Soul is my favorite Sanderson :)"I have yet to slowly read myself through his Cosmere series. I guess I started the wrong way round, since the Stormlight Archive is so outstanding that all the others somehow pale against it.
Anna wrote: "Emperor's Soul is my favorite Sanderson :)"Oooh. I haven't read this yet. Exciting!
EDIT: Do you recommend reading Elantris before Emperor's Soul? Or does it not matter?
Travis wrote: "Anna wrote: "Emperor's Soul is my favorite Sanderson :)"Oooh. I haven't read this yet. Exciting!

Emperor's Soul is completely standalone. I have yet to read Elantris (cause of that I have to postpone another story of this collection which would be spoilery)
Travis wrote: "Oooh. I haven't read this yet. Exciting!EDIT: Do you recommend reading Elantris before Emperor's Soul? Or does it not matter?"
Doesn't matter :) And I haven't read WoK, so take that into account. I've read Elantris, Warbreaker, Mistborn 1-3 and some shorts.
I read The Tea Dragon Festival the other day and absolutely loved it, it's even better than The Tea Dragon Society. So I thought let's continue with charming dragons, and go with A Natural History of Dragons, which I've been saving for years. I was under the impression that it would be pure loveliness and bliss. It's boring me out of my mind, I've only gotten 50 minutes into the audio in almost 24h. At my normal speed I should be finishing the second book in the series by now.
It's possible I'm a bit reading slumpy from Blackout/All Clear. I'm considering going with Crosstalk instead, because the only other Willis I have is A Lot Like Christmas, which I refuse to listen to in October.
I’m reading mistborn for the first time book one was good and I’ve just started book 2. Never read Sanderson before
Just started The Burning White. It begins with an excellent summary of the first four books which was handy. I remembered most of the events surrounding the major characters but many of the lesser ones had slipped my mind.
Aiden wrote: "I understand Anna, Reading a Christmas book is just unheard of."Haha, well I don't have anything against reading it in December!
I won't read them at anytime normally, I did break down and read God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlepig though. And the short story is hilarious.
Travis wrote: "Anna wrote: "Emperor's Soul is my favorite Sanderson :)"Oooh. I haven't read this yet. Exciting!
EDIT: Do you recommend reading Elantris before Emperor's Soul? Or does it not matter?"
Emperor’s Soul takes place in a different part of the world than Elantris with different characters and magic. Order doesn’t matter.
I am just finishing up 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill, and just grabbed Meddling Kids from the library as well.
I finished 2 books today: Blackout, by Connie Willis and the 3rd Trixie Belden book, the Gatehouse Mystery that I’ve been reading aloud to my son (and simultaneously strolling down memory lane). Next we’ll read The Farthest Shore, by LeGuin. I started All Clear immediately, but I think I’m going to take a break from it to listen to Green Mars first.
As soon as I finish Downbelow Station (which I hope will be this weekend) I’ll start on An Unkindness of Ghosts for the group read.
I'm reading Hollow Kingdom. I'm only about a third of the way in, but I am enjoying it. It's about a domesticated crow and his bloodhound cohort who try to save the human world from a zombie apocalypse. Sounds odd, but it's quite sweet in a PG-13 way.
Working my way through Green Mars and just picked up both of next months group reads from the library today.
just finished Brokedown Palace by Steven Brust and totally enjoyed it. It was an old fashioned fairy tale w/o a fairy tale ending and beautifully written and almost dreamlike. There was no grimdark to it either or gratuitous torture or rape or sex. It was a pure delight to read.
