The internet has not sparked joy in me this week. But I'm glad you enjoyed it*! I am a big fan of anything that makes people feel like they have more control and happiness in their personal spaces.

*it being the book

message 153: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments I think 30 sounds like a lot for people that are not book lovers. It also makes sense for community use lending system, saving space, etc.

I am a total and adamant book hoarder like a dragon. Even if I have to carry all of the books myself, they go where I go. =)

message 154: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments 😂😂😂 She says keep those that bring you joy. In my house (and the houses of quite a few on here) being totally surrounded by books brings me joy. Whether it’s a full room (or house because there’s no judging here) of bookcases or a full kindle reading and being able to access books is what brings us joy. The accumulation of knowledge and stories....ahhhhh I’m in my happy place.

Now to go and check on my puppy and start on Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor. I ask you...what could be better than the love of a good dog and a good book.

Agreed, Soo! Jacqueline, that sounds heavenly!

message 156: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1405 comments Marie Kondo is great. She says the point is not getting rid of things but to reacquaint yourself with every single thing you own. I can really get behind this.

Almost done with my closet. Found thing I had forgotten about even though I don’t have a ton and closet wasn’t really messy!

Anyway I think for all of us she would have us do books at the end with the other ‘sentimental’ items 😂

message 157: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments 30 books on an immediate TBR list sounds reasonable. There are countless books I want to read eventually, but if you asked me what I wanted to read SOON, I wouldn't name a hundred books. Even filling out those 2019 Challenge lists took some thinking.

Some people don't buy books until they're ready to read them, and then they get rid of them when they're done. Form that mindset (which I absolutely don't understand), 30 books on a shelf makes sense I suppose.

But as has been said, it's completely moot for people who have gone digital.

message 158: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1541 comments I honestly wasn't that interested in either Marie Kondo's book or the netflix series until all of the hullaballoo, but now I'm curious about both, especially given that I'm moving soon and would prefer to do it with as little needless stuff as possible.

As far as what I'm reading, I'm currently reading Parable of the Sower so that I can be ready for the BR of Parable of the Talents next week. I have both The Door Into Fire and Ancillary Justice on hand for comfortable re-reads when I'm done, since this is already an intense book. I'm finding it very compelling, though.

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Joon wrote: "Some people don't buy books until they're ready to read them, and then they get rid of them when they're done."

That's quickly becoming my ideal! (Note that ideal and reality are far apart as of this writing.) It seems really nice to keep just a small number of loved-to-death favorites, with the rest being temporary guests that serve their purpose then go on their way.

The "digital question" is a tough one--a lurking presence whether they end up being appreciated during my lifetime or not--but when it comes to new acquisitions I'm already in LIFO mode.

message 160: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments It is heavenly Alison. Wish it wasn’t so hot over here at the moment but it is Summer and we should be used to it. I’m going to have to give him his first bath this afternoon to try and cool the poor mite down because it’s so hot. Even here on the coast it’s in the 30s and very humid. It was 45C out where I normally live yesterday. Some places were 49. And some place in the Northern Hemisphere was -65. How’s that for extremes?

OK he’s calmed down now and going to sleep beside my chair. Time for more reading.

I just finished with a move - as you pack, if you do it yourself, cull is my advice

message 162: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I’m definitely a fan of 30 books on a shelf. I currently have about 14 shelves in my Outback house that are chock a block full as well as a dozen or so boxes (OK maybe 4 or 5 times that at least since I have my Mums books and the kids books and all of mine since I was small there too) at my Mountains house. Don’t have enough shelves there. Or here at the beach for that matter. I have around 30 books piled up on my chest of drawers in my bedroom. Maybe more. As I said...books make me happy and yes I do hoard them but they are here for the whole family to enjoy.

message 163: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I have the intention to cull with every move but then end up chucking everything in and promising to do it later. Which is why I have so many boxes of shit under the house and in the garage and in the two spare rooms at my Mountains house. I’ve been thinking about selling it though so that’s going to get reallllly interesting.

message 164: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6105 comments what initially did it for me was moving to France - I had to move everything into storage and I did a massive cull then. After being back 4 years in the US, I then retired and moved cross country and culled yet again. My public library's Friends of the Public Library organization received a lot of donations as did a local thrift shop (clothing)

and I finally finished Girls of Yellow which I still didn't like any more after I finished than when I started it. It depicts an Islamic society in control of a good part of the world including most of Europe and that society displays all the worst aspects of Saudi Arabia, the Taliban and Isis rolled into one with slaves, harems, women totally under the control of men along with intolerance of any other religion. Not my cup of tea and it looks like it's being set up as a series.

I finished Gardens of the Moon which was a lot of fun but yeah, I see why people struggle. Onward to Deadhouse Gates!

Skyward has me laughing pretty good. Very cute.

None of the next books on my TBR are available on audiobook through my library so I'm listening to books 2 and 3 of the Once and Future King (<3) and of course loving it all over again.

message 168: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 192 comments I finished Artemis by Andy Weir. I am reading All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Bleak Harbor by Bryan Gruley. I plan to read Origin by Dan Brown next.

message 169: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 504 comments I just finished Jane Eyre in preparation of reading The Eyre Affair so of course now I'm going to start in with A Crown of Swords (book 7 in Wheel of Time)

message 170: by Karen (new)

Karen (librarykatz) | 262 comments Trying my best to finish Lincoln in the Bardo. It's so flippin' odd...sometimes I get caught up in what seems to be a story and then, poof, the story is gone. I WILL finish it because I'm too far gone to DNF it.

I'm listening to The Fold, narrated by Ray Porter. Really enjoying it but was starting to wonder when things were going to pick. I guess all I had to do was think it and THERE WAS ACTION! This is only the second book I've listened to by this author and I'm really liking him as a light sci-fi read.

Aw, Karen, it's so hard when you're caught between wanting to finish and wondering why you're doing this to yourself. Glad your audiobook is working out!

message 172: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments Karen, did you read 14? Though, you may be better off by reading the Fold first and then follow it up with 14. A friend read it that way and enjoyed both.

message 173: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments Are 14 and the Fold related? I've been curious about Clines (except for his Ex- series, which appears to have been abandoned).

Yup. By order, 14 and then the Fold. I loved 14. Fold was good. You can read Paradox Bound. I loved that one too & hoping it will have a sequel. Each book has a distinct vibe. I like that about Clines' books.

Not yet but it's on my radar. Glad to hear it's worth it!

message 176: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments So I read that HeyT was going to read The Eyre Affair and I have it with me here at the beach and I picked it up to see what it was about and now I’m up to page 71. I was meaning to get back to Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor but it looks like that’s not happening today.

message 177: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments I read Ancillary Justice for the group re-read. Ambitious worldbuilding, interesting language and gendering concept, but lacking the emotion I need for a satisfying read.

These I got while reading Time Was from the nominees list for the Philip K. Dick award. Beautiful and melancholy, I loved it. And I was quite surprised when I saw all the negative reviews - as often, my taste seems different.

message 178: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Haha Jacqueline! That's a perfect follow up response to HeyT's set up XD

Gabi, glad that one worked better for you! I haven't read Ian McDonald yet and am sort of at a loss where to start with him. I'll keep Time Was on my radar.

Haha!

Jordan, I think a lot of people feel similarly about the first book. It might not age very well. Though, I think book 2 is in just about all ways stronger, so if you find the premise fun, hang in! If not, abandon ship!

Each book gets better. First book was 3 star, but after, it was one of my favorites. If you hate it, you hate it though. Not every book is for every body. Good luck.

Of course, some folk don't like the humor, which can get juvenile. Of course, I have the brain of a 12 year old boy..soooo. LOL

Well, I'll slog it out through this one since I try to always finish book club books, but I'm thinking it's just not my style. Not a big fan of the noir type feel and I find Dresden kind of obnoxious.

message 190: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments I can attest that the first Dresden book (at least of the first 8 or 9, which is as far as I read) is definitely the worst.

But yeah, Dresden remains pretty obnoxious throughout. But in later books he has more people to bounce off of, which makes it more tolerable.

I've hit a brick wall somewhere around the 25% point on this one. If listening to it helps get past the drudgery parts, I'll consider it!

Mareike | 1457 comments I started re-reading Parable of the Sower yesterday in preparation of the upcoming Parable of the Talents BR and it is so good to revisit this book, but also very disturbing in the current timeline.

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Anyone who likes things I like, for example Murderbot, Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach and Ninefox Gambit, should most definitely check out Medusa Uploaded! And if you enjoy classical music with gorgeous views of space, then this is for you. Check out the buddy read thread for links to playlists. I'm loving it, so far it's the best thing in 2019! (Except I reread Earthsea, but it's a reread, so I'm not counting it.)

I also started Dragon Pearl, and it's very cute, although I wish it wasn't so MG. I know it's supposed to be MG, but I could see this being my favorite thing if it was adult :D It's very Yoon Ha Lee, fantasy in space with lots of fox magic <3

Audio totally helped me get over the slump of the book being event centered without giving a lot to background or characters. I definitely recommend it.

message 195: by Leticia (last edited Jan 18, 2019 08:59AM) (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I can't agree to this of giving away the books you already read. And if you want to reread them? I have around fifteen times the "30" ideal number in my shelves (if not more) and it doesn't feel like much. I'm actually proud of my fantasy, sci-fi, YA and non fiction collections. It's only impractical when we move but now we are finally in what's supposed to be our permanent house. I may donate some books I don't like anymore to our local library but I would never get down to only 30 books. I have also 1500 ebooks in my cloud and kindle, thankfully they aren't all paperbacks. LOL

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments @Kevin_Church's tweet embedded in this article is the last word on this topic for me:
WHAT MARIE KONDO SAYS: Think about getting rid of books you aren't going to read or reread.

WHAT TWITTER HEARS: Let's burn all books and slay the writers! Let the streets run red with their blood as our literary pyre's smoke blocks out the sun! FUCK BOOKS.
Paying attention to what she's actually saying, and not what others who haven't actually read her book or are taking a line or two out of context are saying about what she's saying, might not be a bad thing.

Gonna ask that we rein in the conversation about decluttering :) If people want to have a conversation about that or how you decide what books to own/keep, I would love that! Just start a thread in Member's Chat and we can tell each other ghost stories about people who part with their books :)

message 200: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 869 comments I finished Kings of the Wyld and absolutely loved it. Now I have to make time soon for the second book in the series.

I just did my 3rd re-read of Golden Son on my path to read Iron Gold for the first time

Now I'm starting Altered Carbon for the group shelf re-read. I just got past the prologue and the first chapter, so not much to say other than I think the writing is pretty good so far and I'm looking forward to more.
