Don Dunham People are attacking other people's Ice Cream ! "The Tin Roof Challenge". can anyone recommend a book to restore lost hope ?

message 1602: by Judy (new)

Judy (jude555) I just finished the travel book Full Tilt by Dervla Murphy. It is a remarkable read by a remarkable woman. It is the story of Murphy's journey in 1963 from Dunkirk France to New Delhi India by bike. The book is mostly about her adventures in Afghanistan and Pakistan, two countries which she loved, much to her own surprise. She has written many travel books since then, almost all of them recounting a journey in a controversial country by bike, or donkey, or mule. I'm going to read her book Ethiopia By Mule next (I may not have the title exactly right.)

message 1603: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 504 comments I just finished Children of Time which I loved so now I'm going to treat myself to going through the BotM threads for it. I seem to be lopsided on my fantasy to sci fi ratio this year so despite still being half way through Wheel of Time I've picked up Snow Crash to try and get more sci fi onto my read this year list.

message 1604: by Don (new)

Don Dunham "Full Tilt" sounds good, thanks

message 1605: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I finished All You Need Is Kill last night. Since this is a current group read, I’m not going to post any thoughts here for the sake of people who are trying to avoid reading about it until they finish it themselves. There’s a review on my profile, and I’ve posted many rambling thoughts in the spoiler thread.

Next up, I plan to start Dune which is one of the upcoming group re-reads. This will be my first time reading it, and I look forward to finally shedding my appalling Dune ignorance.

Would you say that you're no longer going to be a dunece about this book?

message 1607: by YouKneeK (new)

Dune't blame yourself if you don't like it.

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Allison and YouKneek, I think it’s fair to say that by extending this punnishness, you’ve dune your worst to us. And you should be punnished.

Aha! Or, is my punnery itself some sort of punishment?

As they say, the spite must flow!

message 1611: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Haha, save your punitive action for Allison. All of the youkneek puns came from her.

[Escapes in Dune buggy before I can get caught up in the punishment.]

message 1612: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments I guess I can just copy-paste my comment from further up: Thank you, Anna! I read your second rec Amatka by Karin Tidbeck and it hit the mark similar to "Memory of Water".
I only wanted to start it today, but then I literally had to change my complete schedule, cause there was no way I could stop listening to it (thankfully it is a short book, otherwise I would have gotten into trouble with work).
Now I have to pull myself together to read Perdido Street Station, which was my intent before I picked up Amatka, cause everything in me wants to go for the next Emma Newman book. Amatka got me in a similar kind of feeling like Planetfall did.

message 1613: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I was reading Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams which was like The Hobbit but with cats, but I could not really get into it.

Yay! I didn't love it as much, but it sure is different! I actually kind of want to reread it now that people are talking about it in the BR.

I've never considered Kindle nudity before this, have always used one of those covers with elastic bands to hold the device. Maybe I'll give it a try!

message 1616: by Karen (new)

Karen (librarykatz) | 262 comments I've been eating up the Doctor Who audio novellas, getting additional Matt Smith and David Tennant as my favorite doctors fixes.

Curious about all of the hoopla, I picked up Where the Crawdads Sing. So many people raving about it, recommending it, etc that I caved. It was a good book just not rave worthy.

I have pulled How Long 'til Black Future Month? from my TBR pile and will be starting it today.

I usually hold my Kindle in weird ways that would be uncomfortable if it had any extra thickness, and since I don't take it out of the house, it doesn't need protection. I read on my phone when I'm not home.

I have been trying so hard not to make raunchy jokes, and you're not helping me.

I liked Lud-in-the-Mist! I would recommend fans of fairies and/or Gaiman to check it out.

Dawn was fascinating and upsetting and likely my last attempt at Butler. I just don't mesh well, even though I recognize her talent.

All the Birds in the Sky was a trip! I liked it quite a bit.

Listening to Becoming and loving it. I just started The Bone Doll's Twin and haven't gotten far enough to have an opinion.

I bought it and Travis lent me the other two.

I'm not sure why but this copy smells divine. It smells like perfect bookishness, so that makes me happy.

message 1623: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I’ve been trying to find Lud-in-the-Mist but can’t find it anywhere. I shall keep looking.

After finishing Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning and loving it I decided to start Faefever last night. We went out for tea and Hubby put the bedroom TV on when we got home so he could watch the Rugby League State of Origin. I fired up the iPad and started reading instead with a few glances at the TV when something interesting happened. My team beat his and won the series so that was good even though we thought they’d lost it, again, up until the final 20 seconds. But I got nearly a third of the book read.

I can’t work on pages because I have the writing bigger than it should be and I have 650 pages instead of 350 lol One book I read had 900 pages on the iPad but less than 300 in the book. That writing must have been tiny.

I had to have a day or so resting my eyes after reading primarily from the iPad for the last week. Hubby was insisting on more days but I agreed to one because I’m actually in the mood to read and I can’t ignore that. I had some sort of eye infection last week (well a sinus/eye infection teamed with high barometric pressure) and it’s slowly getting better but reading isn’t helping. I probably should listen to an audiobook but I never remember to do that at home. I’m still listening to Dragonflight in the car.

I read this online comic for a while about the Scandinavian States, each country was represented by a person. Finland always showed up with a Knife. Kind of made me think.

But then I have read a few things about the Winter War, so I can't say I would blame them for being a little edgy considering who their neighbor is.

message 1630: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Thanks CBR. Unfortunately I’m not a US resident. Also don’t have a Kindle. And I have a thing about ordering from the internet. It’s very rare that I do. I hear too many horror stories about not getting them. I’ve probably ordered 3 books from overseas in the last couple of years and they were must haves. Also we aren’t allowed to order through Amazon US anymore. Our government has cracked down on them not paying tax to Australia so we can usually only order through Amazon Australia which is like a third world country compared to the US version.

Haha! Scandinavia vs. the World? I love that comic! I still tease my Canadian friends about being our hat.

Idk, maybe when I was in Helsinki everyone was on their best behavior. Maybe all the knife wielders were on holiday elsewhere. Everyone I met offered me champagne, teased me about my choice of beer and asked if we wanted to go dancing?

Anna tells me none of this is a thing, but I was there for a whole 2.5 days so I feel like my knowledge of Finnish culture is robust.

We did convert it to the second book/series read when folks wanted to continue though.

message 1644: by Leah (new)

Leah | 35 comments I have set myself a NYE resolution this year to read all the Wheel of Time books and I can finally say that I am halfway done! Just finished A Crown of Swords. 7 of the books in 3 months...phew. I tried to read this series back in HS and fell off around this point so from here on out it is all new territory for me. :D

I've also been peppering in less dense books here or there (got on a real trashy romance kick for a hot minute and blew through the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas - super cute and super cliche but a fun set of popcorn books.)

Felt an itch for a crime thriller so I finally started the Naked in Death series by J.D. Robb after hearing about it for so long. Thus far I am intrigued.

Last one I am currently reading is a memior by my favorite comedian Iliza Shlesinger Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity. It's just ok but I'm only about half way through.

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Just finished Trail of Lightning and while I remain more convinced than ever that it’s a great and necessary thing that so many more mythologies than that of the Western European variety have populated the worlds of our modern fantasy literature, I still want the writing of these books to be better. I’m looking at you, Jade City, and you The Poppy War, and you Home.

I’ll remain hopeful and supportive of this movement. But I want to not be so disappointed in its efforts.
