Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments I think we're talking about different books. I just skimmed the first four chapters, and didn't find even a hint of a reference to sex. Even did a book-wide search of the word "sex." Four results, none of them actually sex.

Could also be we have vastly different definitions of "erotica."

message 553: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments re: Fluency. I'm not telling anyone not to read it, just saying that I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unless they want to talk to me about all the sex scenes and cackle with mirth. Also, since I started it because I liked The Grove, it's not at all the same thing. The Grove was about an interesting creature and there was cool biology, but Fluency is like sex-ed class for someone who just watched Alien for the first time and is now reading Hitchhiker's Guide, and wants to combine all those things. Also some NASA stuff in the beginning, which would've been interesting, if it didn't come to a jarring halt every time someone checks out the leading lady's rack. I'm also pretty sure most scifi readers don't need the characters to explain what AI or Terra means.

Well mine definitely has mentions of the word. But! There's an all ages edition of the book, maybe you have that one?

Fluency: All Ages Edition

*This edition of the bestselling novel FLUENCY (Confluence Book 1) is suitable for Young Adult readers or those who are sensitive to adult language or sexual themes. In movie parlance, it's a PG-rated version.*

Trike, I can't remember who had sex on the mermaid ship, but I kinda liked that book. Mostly for the ASL, and for not being scary horror like I feared.

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments Anna wrote: "Joon, in that case I don't know how they could be the same book!"

Like I said, we have different definitions of "erotica". Is there sex? Sure. But it's not too detailed and if anything is too juvenile in its presentation.

I mean at worst you could call this a cheesy space romance, and I'd say that's fair. I just think calling it "erotica" is giving people the wrong idea about the book. It's not a book about sex. It's a book about first contact that happens to have a handful of relatively tame sex scenes that some people may find out of place.

Peter F. Hamilton makes this book a straight up children's book by comparison.

message 560: by Anna (last edited Feb 26, 2019 02:10PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments OK, sure, true. It's not super graphic, but it's definitely more sex than romance. I don't personally like reading sex scenes in books, because they don't do anything for me, usually just make me roll my eyes. And it's not cutesy kissing and blushing either, there's already been some stuff that nearly gave my eye rolling muscles a serious cramp.

I've never thought about what is or isn't erotica, so it's entirely possible this isn't it! But it's not the level of romance I usually see in my scifi books, and definitely not the level (=zero) that The Grove had. That was the reason I brought it up, I wasn't expecting to read about all the sexy times after the novelette.

message 561: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments Well, fair enough. Just trust me that this is way on the tame end lol.

For what it's worth, it sounds like the rest of the series is more of the same, which is fine with me, but YMMV.

On the other hand, lots of amazon reviews complaining about "SJW nonsense", which makes it a must-read for me lol.

Haha it's a very polarizing book! If you can hang on for the first third and accept that the science is magic, it gets easier.

message 579: by Leah (new)

Leah | 35 comments I have officially finished Mistborn Era 2....and honestly I enjoyed it quite a bit. It did not come close to the grandiose scope of the original trilogy and got a bit "popcorny" at times but they are a fun ride.

Currently wrapping up Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection just to tie off the loose ends of the Cosmere Universe and say I have read all the works included therein. Then I think I need a bit of a Sanderson break as I have been reading primarily his works since January, I'll read his other series at some point this year I am sure but I need to cleanse my palate a bit I think.

With that in mind I picked up The Priory of the Orange Tree yesterday. It's not often that I buy a book on the day of it's release but not gonna lie, the hype has gotten to me on this one. Here's hoping it's as awesome as everyone claims. Got about 75 pages in last night and I am intrigued...not hooked just yet, but enjoying it thus far.

I made it to page 3 so you're way ahead of me. I'd have used it as fire starter if it weren't an e-book. I hear that it does have enthusiastic supporters though (glances up), 3 pages doesn't feel like I gave it much of a chance, and I hear that it's the basis for one of the group challenges this year. I assume that's why I couldn't make any sense of the challenge description. So perhaps it's time to try again.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments Finished I Shall Wear Midnight (which was meant to be a January book) last night, and started Elven Star this morning. Let us know how it is. I don't want to say I've given up on hyped books, but I certainly stopped expecting so much of them. I'm waiting for others to read this 800 page monster before I decide whether it's worth adding to my TBR or not.

The challenge should be doable even if you don't know anything about Ninefox or Game of Thrones. Also totally not mandatory!

Ninefox isn't for everyone, but I do know some people who really struggled with the beginning, and then ended up not hating it.

message 585: by Raucous (new)

Raucous | 888 comments Since this is the "what else are you reading" thread I could also mention that I recently finished listening to The Chronicles of Amber (books 1 to 5 of Zelazny's 10 book Amber series). I'd read these books when they first came out in the early/mid '70s but, well, that was a while ago and I didn't remember much. I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed these the second time around. They're dated in some slightly annoying ways but still were, to me, an enjoyable creative action fantasy romp.

George R.R. Martin cites these books as one of main inspirations for A Game of Thrones. Somehow that's a series that I haven't gotten around to starting yet. Maybe after it's finished...

message 586: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6105 comments he also cites Maurice Druon's Accursed Kings series (7 books) about the end of France's Capetian dynasty.

https://www.goodreads.com/series/1677...

Martin wrote an introduction to the English translations: "This is the original Game of Thrones.” George R.R. Martin.

It's fictionalized history and I enjoyed the series.

message 587: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Original Zinn: Conversations on History and Politics: one of those books that I can't figure out who the audience is supposed to be. If someone's read his major work (A People's History of the United States specifically), they are unlikely to get much new out of this one; if they haven't--like me--the topics fly by thick and fast and without enough detail to make a lasting impression. (review)

Both of my current reads are for either buddy reads or challenges, and they're quite good so far: The Iliad of Homer, Becoming

Up next: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (BR/challenge), Valor's Choice (BR)

Yep, I've got it on my radar! :) Given some of the unanswered questions after Bands of Mourning I would be a tad miffed if that was the official ending.

I was not aware that he never meant to make it a trilogy though, I know there was a debacle for a while when he said Alloy was meant to be like an era 1.5 and people were very confused.

Based on the last "State of the Sanderson" in December though it doesn't look as though the Lost Metal will be published until about 2021/2022 at this rate as he is focused on Stormlight 4 at the moment.

I agree, generally, though this wasn't my favorite of the set. I might've been a bit distracted, though, as I was feeling pressured to finish it so I could move on to the book I had meant to start 3 days earlier... :-/

All this planning is stressing me out already!

Karen (librarykatz) | 262 comments I just finished Of Blood and Bone and felt it was less meaty than the first book in the series which I really enjoyed. Nonetheless I will read the final book when it comes out.

I also finished listening to 14 which I LOVED! I hope there are more in the series besides The Fold which I also really, really liked.

My new audiobook is Leviathan Wakes. The reader is ok which is making me wonder if I should read the book at the same time to shorten the length of time I'll have to listen to him...

Finally starting A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe. It has been interesting seeing the different reactions to it. I've made sure to stay away from the spoilers discussion but have been sorely tempted to read the comments.
