2019 TBR Cleanup Challenge

✔︎ 1. Oldest book: The Forgotten Beasts of Eld (oldest Patricia McKillip book in my TBR list)
✔︎ 6. Has inspired other art forms: Math with Bad Drawings (Self-referential. It's the included art that inspired the book in this case.)
✔︎ 7. Your initials are in the title: Starfarers (In memory of Vonda N. McIntyre)
That takes me to 10/20 complete. I'd say "half way" but one of the remaining categories is "A book that intimidates you" and, well...

Raucous, I encourage you to hand Cybersex onward, sharing the strange! (I want to say sharing the love, but that really is not the right word for this book. I don't remember any of the stories having much love in them.) I also have done what my friend did and handed it on. I do have to admit that some of the stories have stayed with me, so I am guessing the book has hit the mark of making me think.
So impressed with your wife. I really love the concept behind the Read to Rover program. I hope it works as well as everyone hopes.
You now have me intrigued. In a later post, you give an update and note that you have yet to read a book that intimidates you. I am going to have to go through the posts to find your original list, as I'm really fascinated to know which book it is . . .

10. Reminds you of a song: Off to Be the Wizard (See #17. Alternate: The Eye of the World reminds me of the song "The Eye of the Tiger." I know this is already on the list but frankly this book is long enough to count twice.) ..."
Found your post Raucous - and wow! I have all of those books, and have read them. HOWEVER that was BC (before children). I totally agree with the intimidation that series provides to a person with limited time! Good luck.

So that means I have finished five of the books from my list:

Now only fifteen to go . . .

You can do it!!!!
You can do it!!!!

So I’ve read books in fulfillment of 1, 6(twice), 18 and now 14 (sort of): World’s End by Joan D. Vinge.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to fulfill that prompt, unless I now read Summer Queen of that series. It’s like 800 pages though!

12. Book with a luck symbol: change to War for the Oaks. I really enjoyed this classic of Urban Fantasy.
19. Words in Title in Alphabetical Order: State Tectonics. A good conclusion to the trilogy, though maybe not quite up to the level of the first two.

1. The oldest book - The Odyssey
2. Work of art - The Happiest Refugee
3. Novella or short story c..."
I really like your list Helena. There's a really interesting mix genres there and you've piqued my interest with a few titles.

Reading Kick-Ass for the challenge has sent off on a bit a graphic novel kick. I've since read the Firefly/Serenity series, A God Somewhere and the first in the Preacher series, Preacher, Volume 1: Gone to Texas.
I'm off on another tangent ATM but intend to get stuck into Xenos next.
1. Oldest book – Dune – Frank Herbert.
2. Work of art – Lords of Destruction – James Silke.
5. Ugly cover (and please share it!) – Sundiver – David Brin.
6. Has inspired other art forms – Titus Groan – Mervyn Peake.
7. Your initials are in the title – Perdido Street Station – China Mieville.
8. A book recommended to you - Xenos - Dan Abnett.
12. Book with a luck symbol – I Am Number Four – Pittacus Lore.
13. The 6th book – Babylon's Ashes – James S.A. Corey.
14. Last in a series - A Conjuring of Light - VE Schwab
15. One Hit Wonder – The Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde.
16. Hidden Gem - The Devil's Diadem - Sara Douglass.
19. Words in title in alphabetical order - Altered Carbon - Richard K Morgan.

It really had! I put it off for so many years and for completely wrong reasons! It IS long, but not at all too hard SF-ish. Very entertaining and “kurzweiling” as they say in German, which is the opposite of boring. Highly recommended!
So now I’ve completed 1, 6 (twice), 9, 14 and 18.
Working on no. 4: “What am I Doing Here?” by Bruce Chatwin (which is unfortunately not SF but still good).
That's awesome!! And how nice that the daunting thing was actually so good.
I like to spike my SFF with non-SFF too, keeps things interesting ;-)
I like to spike my SFF with non-SFF too, keeps things interesting ;-)

6. Has inspired other art forms - Anne of Green Gables
12. Book with a luck symbol - The Book of Three (Three is a lucky number, isn't it?)
20. Graphic or illustrated novel - Tinder

18.
---- It was on sale and people seem to love it…
and I did thoroughly enjoy this one - I do love mysteries and this read more like a mystery than a sci-fi or fantasy book
That leaves 1 more to start and complete:

1. Oldest book...
...on my TBR is Lord of the Flies, added 03 May 2010 (the day I joined GR).

@CBRetriever - so impressive! 20 books and not even half way through the year!
And so many others who are finished or most of the way through. I am in awe of you all!

(I somehow missed this earlier)
Her Read to Rover program celebrates its 10th anniversary this week so it's an institution now. The school staff and, especially, the kids love it. We've gotten used to being recognized around town primarily as our therapy dog's parents. It seems to really help many kids. There are a few who, sadly, are stubbornly reluctant readers even in that setting. They don't know what they're missing.
Congratulations on finishing it!
This is where I admit that I started The Eye of the World but that it wasn't really clicking for me. I have something else in mind now that's equally intimidating.

✔︎ 12. Book with a luck symbol: The Raven and the Reindeer (Of course. Ravens have been considered both bad and less commonly good luck, depending on the culture. It was good for this story.)
✔︎ 18. Get On the Bandwagon: Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (It was actually the tour bus (Beelzebus) of The Chattering Order of St. Beryl, part of the promo for the Amazon series release.)
✔︎ 19. Words in Title in Alphabetical Order: The Redwood Revenger (That was close. This was a creatively fun read but note that it's the cliffhanger first book in an unfinished trilogy.)
That takes me to 13/20 complete but with "A book that intimidates you" still looming.
Y'all are really flying through these challenges, well done!
Raucous! Rip the bandaid off! Maybe you'll love your intimidating book :) And if not, I happen to know someone local to you with some really great dogs to comfort you ^^
Raucous! Rip the bandaid off! Maybe you'll love your intimidating book :) And if not, I happen to know someone local to you with some really great dogs to comfort you ^^

1. Oldest book: Beowulf
8. A book recommended to you: Tooth and Claw
11. Buddy read (do not need to participate): The Mere Wife
14. Last in a series: Revenant Gun

Raucous, is the Book With No Pictures in the Read to Rover program? I ask, because I have managed to get the interest of some very reluctant readers with this one. They love it when I tell them that it's a book about sounds, so they can't get it wrong when they read it.

To think, I originally purchased this book when my oldest was refusing to read books without pictures, because he believed they could not possibly be any good if they didn't have a picture . . . he was in Year 2 at the time. I have had children from Prep (a kind of kindergarten/school mix in Australia) through to Year 4 fascinated and in stitches with this one.
AND back to the topic I am supposed to be discussing in this thread - thanks to everyone sharing the books they've read. I've been attracted by quite a few titles. My TBR list is growing exponentially . . . so very much faster than my actually read list.

I've picked books for 15 out of the 20 prompts, but have found the others to not spark anything... yet.
I'll update this post with a nice pictorial format when I have some time to add it all later. for now, I'm tracking it with google sheets...

2. Work of art - Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood - Marjorie Liu - Have you seen the art for this graphic novel. "Lush" doesn't even begin to describe it.
3. Novella or short story collection - Hexarchate Stories - Yoon Ha Lee - story anthology
4. Title is a question - How Long 'til Black Future Month? - N. K. Jemisin - it's a question?
5. Ugly cover (and please share it!) - The Final Empire - Brandon Sanderson - really... it's artistically incoherent and jumbled and looks like a bad comic book

6. Has inspired other art forms - The Princess Bride - William goldman - inconceivable that I haven't read this yet.
7. Your initials are in the title - Blindsight - Peter Watts - my initials are LGB
8. A book recommended to you - Just One Damned Thing After Another - Jodi Taylor - recommended by my mom
9. A book that intimidates you - Dawn - Octavia E. Butler - When I was a kid, the cover of this book freaked me out.
10. Reminds you of a song - Naamah's Kiss - Jacqueline Carey - was scanning down book titles in the list and suddenly "ki-iiis me!" sappy pop song stuck in my head.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N-qO... if you want to torment yourself.
11. Buddy read (do not need to participate) - A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy - Alex White - cheap to pick something already in progress, but I'm not proud.
12. Book with a luck symbol - The Raven Tower - Anne Leckie - Ravens are bad luck, right? Dark Wings, Dark Words, as they say.
13. The 6th book - - - Hell if I know. Suggestions?
14. Last in a series - The End of All Things - John Scalzi - fits too well
15. One Hit Wonder - Trail of Lightning - Rebbeca Roanhorse - First novel, hugo nominated. Seems to fit
16. Hidden Gem - The Flight of Dragons - Peter Dickonson - Out of Print, the basis for a direct to TV movie I loved as a kid... This seems fairly well hidden
17. Someplace you want to go - The Fated Sky - Mary Robinette Kowal - Mars. I've wanted to go there for a long time - since I read KSR's mars trilogy as a teenager.
18. Get On the Bandwagon - Space Opera - Catherynne Valente - band wagon, band stand, either way!
19. Words in title in alphabetical order - Alif the Unseen - G. Willow Wilson - double dip with my sixth-sense challenge
20. Graphic or illustrated novel - Monstress, Vol. 3: Haven - Marjorie Liu - Easy Pick - and sort of cheating since I am planning on reading the second volume too
-----------------------------------------
Now that the list is built, I can do things like.. add them all to the shelf. So much book-keeping!
whatever. It's not like I am neglecting anything like... writing an RPG scenario for my best friend's bachelor party in... 2 days...
Anyhow, if you missed it earlier, I need some suggestions for "the sixth book," as nothing on my TBR really calls out to me on that..

That sounds like great fun. I will have to ask. The kids usually bring books that their teachers think are the appropriate level for them. Sometimes they (especially the reluctant ones) "forget" them. This sounds like it would be a good backup. Thanks!

The Dresden Files Collection 1-6
but this might work
Pump Six and Other Stories = it's a book of short stories and is a fairly quick read

Hmm... that has the benefit of the fact that I already own it digitally...

Another time suck (warp?) lightspeed right turn on my reading list. This also looks like fun to find and do. May add a few later as I find them.
MUST STOP skimming this group. Thanks (sarcastic emoticon), Allison.
01. Oldest book: A Logic Named Joe 1946; done by to-read list sorted by pub date.
02. Work of art
03. Short story collection: see #4
04. Title is a question: Howard Who? - also counts as ugly cover and short story collection; cheating?
05. Ugly cover: see #4

06. Has inspired other art forms: Good Omens - currently on Amazon
07. Your initials are in the title
08. A book recommended to you: The Name of the Wind - daughter-in-law said to stop waiting for 3rd and that I would really like the series. have owned this for over 5 years.
09. A book that intimidates you
10. Reminds you of a song
11. Buddy read
12. Book with a luck symbol: Paradox Bound - more infinity but counts as 8

20. Graphic or illustrated novel: Watchmen - currently reading, so score!.

And I would really appreciate recommendations, since my list is still not complete. If there's any great book you know that fits my category, (has under 3000 GR ratings) could you please let me know.
I do hope it's ok to ask. Hope I'm not breaking any rules by it.

These all have under 3000 ratings
3. Novella or short story collection: Falling in Love with Hominids 742 ratings
---- I liked Skin Folk, so I chose this one
5. Ugly cover (and please share it!): Scorpio, Volume 1: Scorpio & Scorpio Rising 20 ratings

16. Hidden Gem - The Werewolf Principle
A survivor of the sci-fi phase my uncle got through when he was young, I found it hidden - and fortunately forgotten - among my grandparents' books. I say fortunately because since then I already had to save it from the trash can twice. Fine, it may be a bit battered and stained and slightly mouldy but still... Those brutes can't understand the appeal of vintage sci-fi!
17. Someplace you want to go - Broken Homes
London
19. Words in Title in Alphabetical Order - Death's End
12 completed, 8 more to go. I can do it!

Impressive. I have not even found all that I want to read to meet all the criteria in the list. Now I gonna have to find at least a few more as well as finish reading. Good thing this is fun.
Laura--certainly within the rules, but if you're looking for more than one or two books, I might suggest you start a thread in the "Lost Books and Recommendations" folder, just because that tends to get more eyes on it, and therefore more responses :) Good luck! I love seeing the results when people add an extra difficulty rating to the challenge!
Giulia! Congrats! You're so gonna do it!!
John, it's sort of hilarious how many of us find more stuff for our TBRs from the "clear off your TBR" challenge. We're incorrigible!

"
Here is another suggestion. Sort your TBR list by what criteria you choose (I used author). Then pick #6 on the list. Voila.

Emergence is an old favorite that I had in paperback and it was still pretty good. Ditto for Diadem from the Stars but it's part of a series.
Falling in Love with Hominids was excellent
I didn't care for City of Truth - it wasn't my cup of tea
The Norton books were OK, but then I like that author

"
Here is another suggestion. Sort your TBR list by what criteria you choose (I used author). Then pick #6 on the list. Voila."
Or....cheat using a distortion of Ed's suggestion and pick a book you want to read then come up with some sort of magical algorithm (sci-fi and fantasy - see what I did there) involving cats and red wine and book #6 was just what you wanted.
Not that I did that since I don't have cats but substitutes exist.
"I decided I wanted to read this after watching my sixth cat gif/glass of wine" seems totally plausible to me.

Lowell, I am really keen to see what you think of the story of this one. I came across the series in a Graphic Novel advert from the Book Depository - I was interested, but not game to buy without a recommendation.
For your Book 6 - You could go down the track of the 6th book published by your favourite author, 6th story in a short story collection, the 6th time someone told you about this book . . .
But I have to admit, I love the idea of watching the cat, drinking 6 glasses of wine, then choosing the first book that pops in my head at the end of it . . . well actually it would be 6 sips of wine for me. The days of 6 glasses and still being able to comprehend anything are behind me!

Laura, what a great idea! PLEASE post your full list when you have it, I have no doubt I will be adding a few to my TBR list . . .
Have you considered Australian / New Zealand authors? Being from smaller population countries, they often have a much smaller fan base. Perhaps have a search for Australian or New Zealand based clubs here in Good Reads, and have a look at their bookshelves - there may be a wealth of books on your under 3000 ratings.
Most of the ones I have read have not been sci fi or fantasy - OR are young adult; but some suggestions are:
Tui T Sutherland Her Wings of Fire dragon series are getting more popular these days, and so have more than 3000, but she has a few graphic novels out; and a new "Avatar" series that fit the bill. She is a writer for Young Adults, but the books are really well written and are a great fast read for a lazy Sunday.
Shayla Morgansen writes supernatural fantasy based around covens and witchcraft if that is your cup of tea. I find her books a very easy read also, and they have stuck in my mind because I really like her main character - a teenage girl who can live without boys and has a mind of her own. It's refreshing as so many of the stories in the genre are about obsessive, doomed love affairs.
The clubs Author section may have a few possibilities too. There's a lot of people with books to offer. I haven't tried any of them yet, so can't actually recommend them. But I do peruse the list every now than then to see if something leaps out at me.

I ordered today Tui T Sutherland's Menagerie and Wings of Fire since I was looking for something just like that to replace Brandon Mull's Fablehaven Series that left me wanting for more YA books.
The Avatar series, as well as Shayla Morgansen's books are very expensive here in my place for now so I'll have to wait for a few good months for the price to come down a bit. It's always like that here in India. Most of the newer books and those that are not so requested are very expensive. But I added them in my Amazon wish list and will keep watching for a price drop.
Until now I have tried only 2 Australian authors and loved both.
The first is Graeme Rodaughan with The Metaframe War series starting with A Subtle Agency - perhaps the most cinematic stuff I have ever read. His books read like a movie and are non-stop action, with a touch of thrill and horror in between. They are awesome.
And the other is Colleen McCullough with Tim. This was one of the most bittersweet, heartbreaking and uplifting books I have ever read! I still need to write my review for it. And I will be definitely reading more of her.
I haven't read anything by New Zeeland authors till now and I would appreciate a heads up if you come across something interesting.

Anne Perry spent a lot of her childhood in Australia and went to prison there
Germaine Greer also grew up and went university in Australia
Patrick White won a Nobel Prize for literature
Thomas Keneally wrote the book that was the basis for the movie Schindler's List
Cecilia Dart-Thornton is interesting

Her picks were:
1. The Broken Kingdoms
2. The kingdom of Gods
3. Hellboy vol. 1
4. Trickster’s Choice
5. Starless
6. Estranged
In order to randomize this, i rolled a six sided die six times, with results of: 2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 3.
Looks like the sixth pick is Hellboy, Volume 1.
Side note: the iOS app really needs to be able to deal with linking books and covers better.

This is, without doubt, the best method of selecting a book for the challenge I have yet seen.

Hidden Gem: Diadem from the Stars---- Forgotten gem of a series about a Diadem with gems and keeping it hidden from a spider type alien race
I'm going to add a caveat on the hidden gem bit on this one as I'm not sure it qualifies as one. I loved it when I read it back when it was released in paperback, but I'm not sure it's as good as I thought it was back then. It's an entertaining read though.
That leaves 2 others to start and complete
The Dresden Files Collection 1-6
The Last Policeman
