Hi! I'm Shayla, and making stories is the basis of everything I love and do. I write lengthy books about magical happenings in ordinary places, and the supernatural crossing paths with the everyday. My favourite themes to explore in these fantasy story worlds are interdependency, found families, us-against-the-world, and a good helping of angst.

At home in Brisbane where I'm a happy little hermit, I'm married and a mum to our two adorable white cats. In my working life, I have been a schoolteacher, an editor, an assistant publisher and a lecturer. I'm too easily roped into study and am accidentally completing a PhD in Publishing Studies.

I've found the best medicine is to withdraw from the project that's holding me up so I don't force the issue, and work on something else. Fanfiction is the easiest: it doesn't need the backstory and the development an original piece needs but still allows me to practise and hone my skills as a writer. Plus it's fun to let out my inner fangirl and I love being part of fan communities!(less)

Six Best Reads of 2018

The more things that you read, the more things you will know. The more things you know, the more places you’ll go. -        - Dr Seuss

I was an absolute shocker for maintaining my blog this year but I did manage to keep one of my 2018 resolutions – Goodreads tells me I read 22 of my pledged 16 books. My reading choices fell into three categories: non-fiction fandom research for my study, Read more of this blog post »

Talk Bookish to Me by Kate Bromley
"I normally don’t rate books that I DNF before 80%, but my god, this book is bad. It’s badly written. The premise is bad. The forced proximity trope is being used horribly, people are forcing these two characters together for reasons that absolutely d" Read more of this review »

"I don't even want to tell you how excited I was for the first 70% of this book. At this point, such emotions feel like a violation that I allowed on my person. There was just such a good backstory for these two that led to so much hurt and mistrust a" Read more of this review »

Catherynne M. Valente
“But no one may know the shape of the tale in which they move. And, perhaps, we do not truly know what sort of beast it is, either. Stories have a way of changing faces. They are unruly things, undisciplined, given to delinquency and the throwing of erasers. This is why we must close them up into thick, solid books, so they cannot get out and cause trouble.”
Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

Laini Taylor
“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“If you broke Elena's heart, Star Wars would spill out. This was a holy day for her -- it was a cosmic event. This was her planets lining up. (Tatooine, Coruscant, Hoth.)”
