Hi! I'm Shayla, and making stories is the basis of everything I love and do. I write lengthy books about magical happenings in ordinary places, and the supernatural crossing paths with the everyday. My favourite themes to explore in these fantasy story worlds are interdependency, found families, us-against-the-world, and a good helping of angst.

At home in Brisbane where I'm a happy little hermit, I'm a wife to Matt and mum to our two adorable white cats. In my working life, I have been a schoolteacher, an editor, an assistant publisher and a lecturer. I'm too easily roped into study and am accidentally completing a PhD in Publishing Studies.

I've found the best medicine is to withdraw from the project that's holding me up so I don't force the issue, and work on something else. Fanfiction is the easiest: it doesn't need the backstory and the development an original piece needs but still allows me to practise and hone my skills as a writer. Plus it's fun to let out my inner fangirl and I love being part of fan communities!(less)

The more things that you read, the more things you will know. The more things you know, the more places you’ll go. - - Dr Seuss

I was an absolute shocker for maintaining my blog this year but I did manage to keep one of my 2018 resolutions – Goodreads tells me I read 22 of my pledged 16 books. My reading choices fell into three categories: non-fiction fandom research for my study, ind... Read more of this blog post »

"I'm preparing to fall into another star wars phase in two months and I have no regrets. The Jude Watson series about these two was basically my late childhood."

I love this era of Star Wars, and I love Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, so the only way this book was going to fail to hit the mark with me was if it did anything to contradict my memory of the Jedi Apprentice series. Claudia Gray has done a beautiful job of ...more

Catherynne M. Valente
“But no one may know the shape of the tale in which they move. And, perhaps, we do not truly know what sort of beast it is, either. Stories have a way of changing faces. They are unruly things, undisciplined, given to delinquency and the throwing of erasers. This is why we must close them up into thick, solid books, so they cannot get out and cause trouble.”
Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

Laini Taylor
“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Rainbow Rowell
“If you broke Elena's heart, Star Wars would spill out. This was a holy day for her -- it was a cosmic event. This was her planets lining up. (Tatooine, Coruscant, Hoth.)”
Rainbow Rowell, Kindred Spirits

Markus Zusak
“I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.”
Markus Zusak, The Book Thief
