Edward Lee | 11 comments So i'm looking for a book published before 2010. It's about a boy who learns to harness his magic powers from a male teacher. He learns alongside a girl and they learn to write spells in different coloured inks to make them work.

Thanks!

Edward ~~
You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 52 where fewer eyes will see it.
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!

Rainbowheart | 28692 comments How old is the boy, teenager or younger child?

What country were you in when you read this book?

Edward, where does the boy live or study (e.g., realistic Earth (location?), fantasy world, Hogwarts-type school)?

What do the boy's spells do?

What's the tone - e.g., adventure, funny, scary, thriller, mystery?

Hey Rainbowheart,

I remember it was a younger boy - maybe around 10.

I read it in 2000s in Australia

Hi there Kris,

From memory it was a fantasy world and the teacher taught alone.

I can't remember what the spells do, but it had an adventure tone.

The cover had the boy looking frightened while riding a floating object (maybe a carpet?)

Thanks!

Thanks. I added some details to the topic header, so your book might be recognized from the header alone. Feel free to update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website – not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, there's a "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Mai | 1280 comments This is nowhere near a match but just in case!! I'm mentioning it because it was published in 2004 in Australia. It's part of a series.

This book came up searching WorldCat: Ruby Rosemount and the Magic Carpet by Jodie Brownlee. The main character is a girl but one of the reviews says: "The main character is a girl, but boys play a strong role in this adventure as well". She is 11 and the cover is her in a flying carpet but she doesn't look frightened... I can't find much information so I'm not sure about the inks or the teacher. Like I said, just in case!

Thanks Mai, but not quite the one I'm looking for!

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments The Truth about Magic by Dave Luckett, maybe? The author is Australian and the cover has a boy (albeit with a girl and a wizard) on a flying carpet.

Unfortunately I can't find a Google Books preview or copy on archive.org to check if the coloured ink detail matches, but it's come up a couple of times here before so you could see if the other posts about it jog your memory at all:
