Christa's 2019 Reading and Stuff

Started reading Scythe last night. I was intrigued by the premise but a little unsure going in, but once I started reading, I had to force myself to quit for the night. I'm looking forward to jumping back into it tonight.

"Each year since 1993, the Bad Sex in Fiction Award has honoured an author who has produced an outstandingly bad scene of sexual description in an otherwise good novel. The purpose of the prize is to draw attention to poorly written, perfunctory or redundant passages of sexual description in modern fiction, and to discourage them."

Was going to start the next Jacoby mystery but in one of my "daily deals" emails today I saw Reality Gold. The email said it was 1.99 but it was actually 0.99 on Amazon so I grabbed it. Something about it got my attention, I guess, enough to make it my first (albeit super cheap) purchased book of the year. So I started reading that.

It's okay. A quick read and not bad, but I wouldn't say that you're missing something amazing with this one.

Finished Reality Gold last night. Gave it 4 stars for being a fun read.
Started Tortilla Flat. I think it was a mistake. I don't really like being in the company of drunk people. At least, not when I'm sober. I'm only at 12% and the gallons of wine consumed by these guys thus far is... substantial. It's one of Steinbeck's shorter works, though, so I'll manage.

so pretty!!!

But does it really matter as long as you enjoy it? :D

You and me both, sister. I thought about leaving it there to commemorate the "moment" but ultimately, it had to go. LOL At least it was quoted in some of the responses, so it will still live on. :D

For some reason, I can't get into romance these days, trashy or otherwise. I'm sure I'll come back around to it, though. Probably just a phase I'm going through.

How did you do that !?! I would like to add mine to my challenge thread as well, but can't seem to copy the nameplate portion.

The link for yours is:

Stick that in the top of your post and remove the extra space by the start and end brackets and it should work.

I know that feeling. I had that around the beginnning of last year. I just could barely stomach a romance and preferred a lot of other stuff.
Of course, since Romance is my DoC, I always come back. ;-)

Thank you!
I tried it, but I got the broken image icon, even though the link works when clicked.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll come back around. I just need to make sure I don't try before I'm ready, that's always a mistake.

Maybe GR truncated it? It does weird things with links sometimes. :(

I had to choose "Copy Image" and add it separately. :)

Minor spoiler:

Anyway. That's done. I have moved on to Full Contact, the third book in the Miles Jacoby Mysteries. Nice to be back in familiar territory.
I have 4 books on hold at the library. I know I'm risking a pile-up here.

I ended up starting a "current-library-holds" shelf to keep myself aware. I have a Chrome extension called Available Reads that connects to my libraries' Overdrive sites, and adds links on the GR book pages and listings that goes right to the ebooks and audiobooks at the libraries if they have them. I found that I was seeing a book on here that interested me, immediately clicking and going to the library and not paying attention to the current holds I have before adding another.

I was expecting wine to start running out of my Kindle because of how much they were drinking. LOL I will give Steinbeck another shot someday, though.

One of the few paper books still in my house is The Short Novels of John Steinbeck. I just need to read The Red Pony and The Moon is Down to finish it up.

I've always enjoyed that one. THough it is very sad.

I expect the number for this month will be smaller, as I've probably got some longer books coming up. Much of this month will be determined by when / if any of my library holds come in. I have plenty of others lined up in the meantime but I'm kind of all over the place when it comes to "what to read next".

Plus I have 5 holds at the library... most of which will hopefully come in fairly soon. Looks like only a couple of them may come in this month, though. Long hold lines on some of them.
So yeah. No doubt more will get added but for now I'm trying to put the brakes on till I make a dent in what I've already got lined up. :D

ANd you're at least following some kind of list.
I'm randomly getting books from KU based on the random recs they pop up as you look at books. Plus a LOT Of RH, lol. I even found an RH group *rubs hands together*
Im hopeless, lol

That should go quickly, as I'm already over 10% in just with the bit of reading I did last night, so I may have time to switch back to the book I was reading before jumping into The Woman in the Window. If not, I'll knock that one out first.
I suspect other holds will be rolling in soon.

I hardly ever buy books anymore unless they're reference or it's something cheap that I really want to read.
I love my library. <3

I wrapped up two of the library books and then went back and finished the Midnight Book Club Box Set that I put on hold. I'm currently reading Unwind, also from the library. I have another in from the library, Convenience Store Woman, then that will wrap up the influx of holds.
After that, I'll be getting to some of the books on my Kindle Unlimited wishlist.
Also, I found a way to break my addiction to notebooks, pens and washi tape - I'm switching to digital journaling. I created a journal that I just finished and exported today to use in Xodo (Android) and it works perfectly.
If anyone has an iPad with Goodnotes and would be interested in testing the file there, let me know and I'll share the file. I'd love to know how well the design and hyperlinks work there too.
I think that's all my reading and journaling news for now. :D

I like your post with the years book covers btw!
Nice way to track the books without the pressure of making it a challenge :)

Plus it looks pretty :D

Unwind wasn't quite as good as Scythe, but still quite good.
Convenience Store Woman was quite compelling, and there was something extremely satisfying about the ending.
Finished that one in the wee hours and I haven't yet decided what to read next. Many options already on my Kindle. Oh, and I've got two books on hold at the library again... *sigh* They'll probably take a while to come in, though.

LOL! I feel you, though.
