Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Thanks! :)

Started reading Scythe last night. I was intrigued by the premise but a little unsure going in, but once I started reading, I had to force myself to quit for the night. I'm looking forward to jumping back into it tonight.

message 53: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Finished Scythe last night, will be starting X tonight, and likely finishing it, as it's a short story. After that... I'm not sure. I have two holds at the library that I'm waiting on, and I'm not sure when either will come in. The numbers say I should have a week, but I thought that before and it ended up being a few days. LOL I'll probably read the next Miles Jacoby mystery while waiting for them.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments A little light reading for you all. With excerpts.

"Each year since 1993, the Bad Sex in Fiction Award has honoured an author who has produced an outstandingly bad scene of sexual description in an otherwise good novel. The purpose of the prize is to draw attention to poorly written, perfunctory or redundant passages of sexual description in modern fiction, and to discourage them."

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Finished the short story X today. It was okay.

Was going to start the next Jacoby mystery but in one of my "daily deals" emails today I saw Reality Gold. The email said it was 1.99 but it was actually 0.99 on Amazon so I grabbed it. Something about it got my attention, I guess, enough to make it my first (albeit super cheap) purchased book of the year. So I started reading that.

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Reality Gold looks interesting, of course its not on Amazon uk :(

It's okay. A quick read and not bad, but I wouldn't say that you're missing something amazing with this one.

message 58: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Fair enough! Thanks for letting me know!

message 59: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments You're welcome! :) You've got some really good books on your to-read-owned shelf that are much better than this one. :D In fact, it's really difficult for me to resist adding a bunch of them to by to-read shelf... But I must resist! LOL

message 60: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Hahaha xD

message 61: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments My MASH challenge is now in post #3, formerly known as "ewafesd". :D

Finished Reality Gold last night. Gave it 4 stars for being a fun read.

Started Tortilla Flat. I think it was a mistake. I don't really like being in the company of drunk people. At least, not when I'm sober. I'm only at 12% and the gallons of wine consumed by these guys thus far is... substantial. It's one of Steinbeck's shorter works, though, so I'll manage.

But does it really matter as long as you enjoy it? :D

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments DoodlePanda wrote: "Man, I'm gonna miss "ewafesd" xD"

You and me both, sister. I thought about leaving it there to commemorate the "moment" but ultimately, it had to go. LOL At least it was quoted in some of the responses, so it will still live on. :D

MrsJoseph wrote: "I've read so much trashy romance lately. I can;t seem to stop."

For some reason, I can't get into romance these days, trashy or otherwise. I'm sure I'll come back around to it, though. Probably just a phase I'm going through.

Nyssa | 1569 comments Christa wrote: "My MASH challenge is now in post #3, formerly known as "ewafesd". :D"

How did you do that !?! I would like to add mine to my challenge thread as well, but can't seem to copy the nameplate portion.

message 68: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I ended up using the "inspect" feature from Chrome to grab the URL of the actual image.

The link for yours is:

< img src="https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/comp..." alt="script-fonts" class="gr-hostedUserImg" >

Stick that in the top of your post and remove the extra space by the start and end brackets and it should work.

I know that feeling. I had that around the beginnning of last year. I just could barely stomach a romance and preferred a lot of other stuff.

Of course, since Romance is my DoC, I always come back. ;-)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Christa wrote: "I ended up using the "inspect" feature from Chrome to grab the URL of the actual image. "

Thank you!

I tried it, but I got the broken image icon, even though the link works when clicked.

message 71: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments That sounds too complicated, I'll just leave mine as it is xD

message 72: by DoodlePanda (new)

Yeah, I'm sure I'll come back around. I just need to make sure I don't try before I'm ready, that's always a mistake.

Maybe GR truncated it? It does weird things with links sometimes. :(

I had to choose "Copy Image" and add it separately. :)

message 75: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Finished Tortilla Flat yesterday. And by "finished" I mean that I may have skimmed quite a bit. I mean, I read enough to get the gist of things.

Minor spoiler:
(view spoiler)

Anyway. That's done. I have moved on to Full Contact, the third book in the Miles Jacoby Mysteries. Nice to be back in familiar territory.

I have 4 books on hold at the library. I know I'm risking a pile-up here.

message 76: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Lol. I've got a 700 pager in my hands. An ebook from overdrive loaned out and another just came into the library to pick up. Nyargh!

message 77: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Lol on Tortilla Flat. It's a good book but Steinbeck requires a certain attitude from me to read.

I ended up starting a "current-library-holds" shelf to keep myself aware. I have a Chrome extension called Available Reads that connects to my libraries' Overdrive sites, and adds links on the GR book pages and listings that goes right to the ebooks and audiobooks at the libraries if they have them. I found that I was seeing a book on here that interested me, immediately clicking and going to the library and not paying attention to the current holds I have before adding another.

HomeInMyShoes wrote: "Lol on Tortilla Flat. It's a good book but Steinbeck requires a certain attitude from me to read."

I was expecting wine to start running out of my Kindle because of how much they were drinking. LOL I will give Steinbeck another shot someday, though.

message 79: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I really liked Cannery Row and his take on The Pearl is quite good.

One of the few paper books still in my house is The Short Novels of John Steinbeck. I just need to read The Red Pony and The Moon is Down to finish it up.

message 80: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Updated all the things. Currently reading Flowers for Algernon, which I was pretty sure I read in school but now I'm not sure. It may have been assigned around the time I moved and switched schools so I might not have read it then.

I've always enjoyed that one. THough it is very sad.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments January Wrap-up:

Books: 11 (see post #2 for list)
Pages: 2907

message 83: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Woah well done!

message 84: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Thanks! :)

I expect the number for this month will be smaller, as I've probably got some longer books coming up. Much of this month will be determined by when / if any of my library holds come in. I have plenty of others lined up in the meantime but I'm kind of all over the place when it comes to "what to read next".

message 85: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I'm completely random when it comes to choosing next book to read too... I will probably try to aim for shorter ones as the UNO reading challenge has started and its a group challenge, so I want to read more books rather than long ones. I have a couple more lined up that I have got from your feed though :D

message 86: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I've been avoiding the feed the last couple of days. My to-read-2019-maybe shelf already has so many books on it. And the only reason it's a separate shelf is because those are the books that are either at the library or on KU or I want them badly enough to buy them. (I'm trying to read as cheaply as possible. LOL)

Plus I have 5 holds at the library... most of which will hopefully come in fairly soon. Looks like only a couple of them may come in this month, though. Long hold lines on some of them.

So yeah. No doubt more will get added but for now I'm trying to put the brakes on till I make a dent in what I've already got lined up. :D

message 87: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Wooo hooo!

ANd you're at least following some kind of list.

I'm randomly getting books from KU based on the random recs they pop up as you look at books. Plus a LOT Of RH, lol. I even found an RH group *rubs hands together*

Im hopeless, lol

message 88: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments So I started The Midnight Book Club Super Box Set: A Collection of Riveting Horror Mysteries and then two of my library holds came in. LOL Doodles suggested that since it was short stories, I could just put it down between stories and come back to it later. And she was right. So, I read about half the stories in it, then switched to start Midnight Riot, since that one came in first.

That should go quickly, as I'm already over 10% in just with the bit of reading I did last night, so I may have time to switch back to the book I was reading before jumping into The Woman in the Window. If not, I'll knock that one out first.

I suspect other holds will be rolling in soon.

message 89: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I need to get myself to the library...

message 90: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments It's saved me a ton of money. I have Kindle Unlimited which is great for the horror and backlist mysteries that I like, but there's a lot books I come across on GR that I get interested in that aren't going be be in KU.

I hardly ever buy books anymore unless they're reference or it's something cheap that I really want to read.

I love my library. <3

message 91: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I love my library too. <3

message 92: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Dang, I haven't posted in a bit! I did update my cover post, and I have still been reading every night, just been lax with the regular updates. Every day I'm like, "I should update my book progress but I don't remember what percentage I'm at and the Kindle is aaaaalllll the way on the other side of the room..." so it gets done every few days instead. :D

I wrapped up two of the library books and then went back and finished the Midnight Book Club Box Set that I put on hold. I'm currently reading Unwind, also from the library. I have another in from the library, Convenience Store Woman, then that will wrap up the influx of holds.

After that, I'll be getting to some of the books on my Kindle Unlimited wishlist.

Also, I found a way to break my addiction to notebooks, pens and washi tape - I'm switching to digital journaling. I created a journal that I just finished and exported today to use in Xodo (Android) and it works perfectly.

If anyone has an iPad with Goodnotes and would be interested in testing the file there, let me know and I'll share the file. I'd love to know how well the design and hyperlinks work there too.

I think that's all my reading and journaling news for now. :D

message 93: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Seems like youre in a reading flow :D

I like your post with the years book covers btw!
Nice way to track the books without the pressure of making it a challenge :)

message 94: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Thanks! Yeah, whenever I've tried to keep a challenge list updated, I always fail, but for some reason I can do book covers with no problem. LOL

message 95: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Christa wrote: "Thanks! Yeah, whenever I've tried to keep a challenge list updated, I always fail, but for some reason I can do book covers with no problem. LOL"

Plus it looks pretty :D

message 96: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Covers updated with the two latest reads.

Unwind wasn't quite as good as Scythe, but still quite good.

Convenience Store Woman was quite compelling, and there was something extremely satisfying about the ending.

Finished that one in the wee hours and I haven't yet decided what to read next. Many options already on my Kindle. Oh, and I've got two books on hold at the library again... *sigh* They'll probably take a while to come in, though.

message 97: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I feel like I'm starting to slow down... But you're speeding up! :-D

message 98: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments It's an illusion. By updating less often, it looks like I'm getting through more books than I am. LOL I was on fire in January, but since then I've slowed down.

LOL! I feel you, though.

message 100: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Pretty slow this year for me. Not bad still, but in comparison to what I usually do at the beginning of the year this is slow and probably doesn't bode well for the end of the year given my usual pattern.
