J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1252 comments Looks like with this post I will be heading for Pemberley at first light. I have enjoyed being here with Colonel Brandon... I do so love him. However, the shades of Pemberley are calling and I must answer. My Challenge numbers don't match this due to the number I have read that don't have a GR link.

Thx!!! I love the author and have met her twice at bookclub settings(my own and another local group). Sooo...I skipped giving it a rating. The magic became more and more threatening. I really struggled in the middle of the book to read more than 5-10% a night. Some "elements" of the story were interesting. Some many folks here gave this one a 5 rating. Happy listening!!!

Since you are presently in the carriage you won't get this missive until arrival but -- Kudos on reaching Pemberley!

#195 -- I have been waiting patiently for this to resume and I had been afraid P.R. Hood would not write more … but he has posted two short works last Fall/Winter.

This is a great premise:
Lady Catherine … not quite a thief
Rev. Collins -- not quite a murderer

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments Debbie update:

187. The Black Moth - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
First novel written by the incomparable Georgette Heyer...when she was fifteen. Amazing!

188. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Poet: A Pride & Prejudice Variation - 4.75 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Unique plot. P&P with elements of You've Got Mail.

189. A Most Alarming Report: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Well-written zaniness, hurling Darcy and Elizabeth from one life-threatening crisis to the next.

190. His Choice of a Wife: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 3.5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Emphasizes the terrible parenting by both Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and takes the Lydia-and-Wickham storyline in a whole new direction. I thought the second half of the book was much better than the first.

191. The Prince and the Pauper (non-JAFF) - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Nice to revisit an old favorite after a long time and find it's still fantastic.

Finally got my review up for my #172, A Lady's Reputation. (I'd received and read an ARC before the GR listing was up.) My old review was for the earlier unpublished version.

Isn't it??? And she wrote it to entertain her brother, which is just so kind!

This brings to mind another author that has blown me away by writing an excellent book at such a young age. See below:

"POPULAR ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Roseanna M. White My next book to come out, The Lost Heiress, was actually my first finished novel, which I wrote at age 12-13. My inspiration at the time was a combination of fairy tales and Lori Wick's Kensington Chronicles. =) I've rewritten that story approximately a gazillion times and am soooooo excited that it's finally being published! It is barely recognizable from that first draft, but the heart of the story is still the same...

Heyer's consistency as an author throughout her life is so impressive. While some authors wrote their great books at very young ages--S.E. Hinton began The Outsiders at age 15--Heyer is unusual that she didn't have just one very creative period, but churned out books until the very end.

Just as a funny note, I recently stumbled upon a amusing quote in this review of a biography of Heyer in The Guardian, which partially explains her prodigious output:

"Heyer turned out two (mostly well-written) novels a year for almost four decades, a feat she performed with the help of gin, fags and Dexedrine. Under the influence of the latter, she could write for up to 24 hours at a time."

Sheila, I share your sensibilities, however, here the "selling" part is not really graphic if that helps. ;)

message 572: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 769 comments Thank you for the comment but I have enough stories to read which don't have that type of premise that I can skip this. I just don't want to think about ODG in that type of situation...even though I know it happened to women in those days. And today with the sex trade that goes on we are not over it so I don't want to in any way romanticize such.

- Necessity is the mother of Invention is complete by the bye. It says to be continued but that was only an epilogue of the secondary characters fates which was never written.

Michelle: Thank you! Feel free to steal anything your heart desires :)

I know! Heyer sounds like quite a character (although not always a pleasant one). As a writer, though, I'll stick to the coffee! I get high on Sudafed. Although I do kind of like the image of her with a gin and tonic, smoking, and reading some obscure Regency history book in one hand and typing with the other.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments This is the last list I'm posting here. Next one will be in Mr. Darcy's library!!

192. Jane Austen Made Me Do It: Original Stories Inspired by Literature's Most Astute Observer of the Human Heart 5+ stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
22 really excellent JA-inspired stories. Laurel Ann Mattress, the editor, had posted an offer in this group a few months back offering free copies, and I took her up on it. So glad I did!

193. A Capital Whip: A Pride and Prejudice Sequel - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Nice novella giving Anne deBough a chance to shine.

194. The Journey Home to Pemberley - draft copy from Joana Starnes
This is still going through some edit changes, so I'm not going to rate the version I read. It's Joanna's usual high quality and I'm sure it'll be very successful.

195. One Bride & Two Grooms: A Pride & Prejudice Novella - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Delightful, relatively angst-free novella. I'm loving these Christie Capps books!

196. Teachings of His Father: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 2 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Bleah!

197. Matchmaking at Pemberley - 3 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Not very well written or well proofread. Characters don't always behave believably.

198. Mrs. Collins' Lover - 2.5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Yes, Elizabeth is Mrs. Collins, and yes, Darcy is her lover. If you can get past that, my low rating is not for the plot but because it's draggy and bored me.

199. And Then Love: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Prequel - 5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The first in Leenie Brown's sweet Willow Hall Romance series.

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Oh, thank you Sara!!!
I will be writing more, now that school have started up again.
I am about halfway through two books at the moment.
*One is a Regency, continuation of 2005 movie. A sweet and (hopefully) funny romance with a plot where Elizabeth's parenthood is at question. I wanted to write a Caroline that were not vile but more of a pain in the but and redeem Lady C. It explores the engagement period, their honeymoon and Elizabeth's introduction to the ton. It will be the first in at least 3 books as I have plots for Anne and Richard will do something that Darcy will not like. They will have a fall out but who's in the right might be left to the reader to decide. Later I have a plot involving their children, involving Queen Victoria... I will have to devid it into several books or write an really long one...
*The second is a modern mystery. I have moved Meryton to Kent (needed shoreline). E works at an explosive factory, lady C is the owner. A two component military explosive will be stolen and Jane will not be sick but drugged at Netherfield. It will take ODC to Yemen, at odds, looking for the stolen explosives, the thief and a missing Bennet sister. I wanted to write a modern situated in England and pay homage to my fabulous coworkers at Dyno Nobel explosives inc. I worked there for years and have some particular insights to the theme...

But... I also need to edit SW and my saving angel Jeanne is helping me. She is my Oracle of Delphi where language and grammar are concerned. Hopefully, our joint effort will make it presentable to FF or AHA, when it is done (crossing my fingers).
