Hey all. A few of us started a lively discussion in another thread about our simultaneous job searches. Pamela mentioned (and I totally agreed) we needed a new thread for this. Instead of just Job Search Vibes, let's make this a place for talking about whatever we wish that is not book related.

but job search vibes are needed! I just had a breakfast meeting which has me ready to make two voodoo dolls- one for my board chair to hurt her and another for the interview committee to love me!

message 4: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 333 comments and you said in the other thread you gave away your heels,...wow! I've not worn most of mine for several years but I hold out hope one day I will again!

message 5: by Bonnie G. (new)

Bonnie G. (narshkite) | 1380 comments Mod
Can you use voodoo dolls.for love vibes? How did I not know that. That could be life changing! (Personally and professionally.) Since neither of us has a voodoo doll I will try to make the good luck vibes I am sending extra strong.

And yes, I disposed of the heels. In addition to weather, I am old enough that heels hurt my knees and feet so it was time. Nothing over 2.5 inches remains. I finally sold my first Jimmy Choos which I bought on a particularly stressful trip to London back in my lawyer days. They were a month's rent. But I sold them on ebay for $550 25 years later so it wasn't quite so painful. They were too small anyway (my feet grew with pregnancy, and never got back to a 7.5). The rest went to charity. 40+ pairs. There was some good stuff there, and it hurt, but I can now dedicate myself to the pursuit of good flats, and I have closet space for them.

message 6: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 347 comments I've largely abandoned heels because I've put on a lot of weight and my knees can't take it.

I wore very cute oxfords to my interview today.

I love oxfords. How did the interview go?

message 8: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 347 comments OK - I think. Although there was a computer test and I had a total mental blank on something really freaking easy that I do all the time and I am very cross with myself about it.

Everyone is nervous in interviews and has slip ups. My literal job, or at least part of it, is teaching people to interview, so I am an expert ;)

message 10: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 347 comments Well, I didn't get it. They went with someone with more finance experience (who presumably didn't blank on how to write a really freaking simple excel formula!)

I am disappointed - the location, money and role were exactly what I would like. But I would rather it not be with an organisation that I don't much admire, so I guess it's a good thing in a way.

message 11: by Bonnie G. (new)

Bonnie G. (narshkite) | 1380 comments Mod
So sorry! If you have great Excel skills though, you will get swooped up. In fact, if you want to move to the States, after I get a job, I may hire you :). I have a second skype interview tomorrow, from 9:30 - 3:30 (with a lunch break from 12:30 - 1:45). That is one long Skype! Luckily the next one is in person. It is even longer (8:30-4:00 with no breaks), but still that is easier than being on camera.

Alicia, I'm sorry you didn't get the job you were after, but working for an organization that you don't admire is tough stuff! Perhaps you've dodged a bullet.
I've been in government contracting since forever... and right now, I'm considering looking for something else entirely. The company that I've been the Director of Contracts for for the past 10 years - well, when the higher ups don't value the details, and they look at you as the problem for trying to protect them... yeah, that's a problem for me.

Best of luck to you, Bonnie!

A friend of mine posted on FB that she had been on a meeting called for TEN AND A HALF HOURS the other day. All I can say to that is NOPE, NOPE. ALL OF MY NOPES.

Just checking in. Had a great series of Skype interviews (2nd round) yesterday and I am packed and ready to head to NY Monday for in person interviews for a second job (third round). I also am working out dates for callbacks for second interviews in Connecticut and Indiana. Hope everyone else's interviews are going well.

I could not agree more! Magic is in the air in the Northeast US on Tuesday! Also, I just got an invitation for a second interview with a law school in Connecticut. I realllllllly want both NY jobs, but if that doesn't happen (and if I wasn't clear, I realllllly want it to :)) maybe we will end up in the same state. We can get a GFY IRL book club going!

Also, they need to get over the business degree. You have run a museum, you know this stuff! Just make sure they know that.

PS, I am coveting your Rothys. When I am employed again, I might go there. When I was in North Dakota I got obsessed with Aquatalia waterproof suede boots, and I bought 3 pairs. It has been over a year since my last purchase, and I still get ads.

We could! It's a small enough state to get anywhere quickly (that's why I like it! Quick to Boston, quick to NYC. Quick to beach, quick to mountains.

And we'll celebrate new jobs with Rothys and that is how the GFY book club will find each other! Internet ads are annoying and creepy. I'm also getting ads for those horrid mules Meghan wore on the plane- I made the mistake of clicking the link to see exactly how horrible they were.

Here's hoping. But then I also feel that the chances of getting a job with the first resume are slim. But I would like to think if she would have done a phone interview if she had doubts. It's a long drive there- one of the reasons I want to move away!

GFY job search powers for the week! And Alicia is going to find something she loves to apply to and yay!

It has been heaven. Springsteen on Broadway and 2 other plays, good pastrami, great bagels, NY pizza, and miles and miles and miles of walking. Usually I spend a day at the Met or MoMA or the Brooklyn Museum, but my sister is with me and its not really her thing. The only museum we hit was the 9-11 one. I had been to the memorial, but not the museum. Several times in the years after it happened I went to the church next to the site (I am blaning on the name, small, Episcopal, the NYPD staged out of there) and there was a makeshift fire fighters memorial that was just heartbreaking. Now they have a small bell to commemorate but the rest is gone. The museum is an extrordinary tribute. I still remember it all so clearly that rewatching the coverage is too gutting -- and god knows there is no risk I will forget. I do think its amazing for people too young to remember, and future generations. I was in the memoriam room with pictures and bios on those lost, and there were two lovely girls next to me, maybe 18 and one said "that's Ava's dad." I had to walk away because I started crying. I assume Ava was their age, so she would have been an infant when her father was lost. Anyway, TMI and depressing. On to other things.

Have a fun with your niece. My son is in college in Pennsylvania (2nd year), and I meet here here or in Philly a couple times a year. My favorite day of the year.

As for the not so great interview, the next will be better. I have faith. Its weird, part of my job is to develop programs and materials to teach people to job hunt, so interviews are exhausting because I need to really dazzle (no one is hiring a crap interviewer to develop career services programing.) I got to my friend's house on Tuesday after the interview, and I basically sat like a blob while she and her BF poured pizza and vodka tonics into me. It was restorative! I recommend vodka and melty cheese to get you past your last interview and on to your next.

Pamela | 333 comments I'm not sure I'm ready to go to the 9/11 museum. Too many memories involved with that one. I still can't watch the video of the towers coming downn.
I love just walking in NYC. The best thing to do. I goofed up and need to be back here Sunday so its really an extended day trip- staying at a hotel in New Haven Friday night (so can have dinner with friends there) then get up early and meet the niece for breakfast, see the Pink show at FIT and then a friend from DC arrives and I'm not sure what she has in mind. After dinner, train and then drive home, getting home very late.

That is stressful for interviews. And I think it is hard coming into it, as I did thinking I wasn't right. Onto the next one, I just wish there was a next one!

Okay, they are down to 2 finalists for the job I think I want most (it is in the City and I don't know about $$ yet, so we will have to see.) They asked for my 2 top references. Fingers crossed.

Enjoy NYC this weekend even though its a quick turnaround!

Asking for references s a good sign! Good to know I'm not the only one who goes through the interview process not knowing the salary!

It's nice to be in the real world! Spent the afternoon at the Yale British Art Museum. So lovely.

Okay, they talked to one of my references today for 45 minutes! She is lovely, anyone would want to chat with her, but she said it really was all business and the Dean asked specific and probing questions. (He was a litigator for 25 years, so he knows how to ask questions.) Feeling hopeful, but definitely not assuming anything.

I love the Yale British Collection. I have not been in years! The last time I was there it was for a reception for an exhibition of photos from the Earl of Snowden. It was a million years ago. I can't recall exactly how long ago. but my 19 year old was very little. I was staying with a friend in New Haven and when my friend (who had zero experience with or interest in children) came to get me he told my mostly preverbal kid that we were going to meet Snowden. When I got home my son had drawn me a picture of a snowman. (It took me days to figure out that he thought I had gone to meet a snowman.)

45 minutes is huge! Noone would spend that much time if they weren't interested. I would be worried- 45 minutes covers a whole lot of ground!
Now when you're back in that part of the country you can go again. And the kid can draw you another snowman (what a great story to tell all he brings home!)

LOL, I have a framed photo of him playing piano naked when he was 3. I think it may be one of the reasons he never brings his dates to meet me. Still, if I ever do meet one of these young women, I will take your advice and deploy that story.

I just had a second interview with a school in CT, so I may end up really close to Yale yet. But I am still hoping for NY.

GFY question- but is the naked piano photo on the piano?

My mother took my brother and I to an Olan Mills when we were pre-K, ripped off our tops and had our portraits taken (my little toddler hands are clasped in front like "my dignity!"). Still sits in her living room. Maybe that explains why I'm single.

CT is a good medium choice. I had a Hawaiian poke bowl for dinner- very good and exotic!

LOL on the Olan Mills picture! My mother had the family photo from my brother's bar mitzvah in the entryway for 35 years so it was the first thing visitors saw. I was 6 and looked adorable, but my sister was 12, and it was definitely not a golden moment for her even though my parents had her braces removed for the night. My sister has also remained unmarried. You may be on to something.

(We had a poke place in Fargo, so I am not sure its still considered cutting edge, but it is definitely delicious!)

Thanks to both of you for the support! The 45 minutes seemed very promising.

Next time you are in NYC try SimpleNYC. They have the best poke. Not just salmon and tuna, but all sorts of things, and its cheap. Its not far from the Manhattan bridge, on Ellsworth St I think. So good!

message 43: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 347 comments Poke has just arrived in the UK - and it's gone from novelty to supermarket versions (which I cannot recommend) very quickly!

Morocco was good. We were travelling with an old friend (we were roommates for about 5 years on and off in our 20s, but haven't seen each other in 9 years) and I was a bit apprehensive but it went well. Interestingly, we thought my friend's pretty good French would be helpful, and it was in the new town (we were in Tangier) but in the old town Spanish was the second language. And none of us have any Spanish.

I think 5 days is too long for a small town, but we did manage to see some new stuff every day.

Not very spicy, I had to add salt, They must have toned down the recipes. But it's pretty good. I'll make it again but with more spice. (and I am a spice wimp)

I've not been cooking either! But I figured the price on this was good and a few of the recipes sounded so good- and a good cause. My mom made some of the lamb recipes and said they were really good (I don't cook meat so gave her all the meat pages!) And I should cook more, it's healthier!

I love to cook, and so does my son. We are under the same roof for the first time in ages, so we have been cooking a lot. We did seared salmon pepper and dill crusted salmon and a maple and cinnamon roasted butternut squash tonight that was really yummy.
