Lucy laid down next to him, shutting her eyes.

The fire roared around them and they could feel the heat from it, but it didn't burn them Jeff held the rag over his mouth hoping the wet rag would stay cool enough to keep his mouth from being burnt.
Lucy whimpered from under the cloth as she felt burning on her knees.
The heat was getting less and Jeff new the worst was over but when he sat up out of the stream he could see glowing embers all around them and with Lucy's bare feet he would have to carry her until they reached cooler ground.
Lucy hysterically dusted ashes off her nightgown.
"I saw a road a few miles off, We will go there, Climb on my back i will carry you as far as I can"
Lucy nodded and jumped onto his back, wrapping her arms around his shoulders, being careful not to choke him. She was hesitant to wrap her legs around his waist but did it anyway.
He grabbed her legs to help hold her up then he set a quick pace in the direction of the road. They needed supplies and a faster mode of travel if they were going to get out of this mess at all.
Lucy tried her hardest not to fall asleep as they trekked through the forest.
Jeff knew that soon their attackers would realize that the fire had not worked and they would be after them again and after the fire there was nowhere to hide. The chances of escape was getting very slim.
"Jeff, I see a cabin." Lucy said, pointing ahead of them.
Jeff sighed in relief and turned to where she pointed. He was tired from carrying her and needed a rest. Maybe they could find out about what was going on.
"I can walk the rest of the way." Lucy said, dropping her legs to the ground.
He let her down and slowed his pace as they approached the cabin.
Lucy limped and gritted her teeth from the pain. It look like the cabin has anyone living in it.
Jeff motioned for her to stop, and he squatted and watched the cabin.
Jeff watched for any sings of movment in the cabin.
The cabin stared back at them. "I think it's vacant." Lucy whispered.
Jeff nodded "I think so" he said "I will go check it out, you wait here."
Jeff walk slowly up to the cabin and looked in the crude windows. Then he headed for the door he on the door and it opened with a squeak. He wave for Lucy to join him.
Lucy stumbled up to the cottage, peaking in the windows.
It was abandoned and there was very little there for them. Still it was cover and a place to rest.
Lucy lowered herself shakily into an old rocking chair.
Jeff glanced at her bare feet and knew without a horse they were not going anywhere.
Lucy tried to cover her drawers that were exposed underneath her ripped gown.
Jeff noticed and smiled "maybe there is something in here that you can change into" he suggested.
He began to look for a chest or something that might contain some clothes for Lucy.
Lucy looked around the room, her eyes catching a taxidermy animal head on the wall. She swallowed.
Jeff took the stairs up to the loft, still searching.
Jeff found a chest upstairs at the foot of a dusty old bed.
Jeff pulled the chest to the middle of the room and opened it.
Just some book and sewing stuff" he replied as he knelt to pull everything out of the chest hoping that there would be more on the bottom.
"May I see the sewing stuff?" Lucy asked, stepping forward.
"Sure" he said and handed her the needles and thread.
She took the needles and thread and sat on the bed what groaned under her weight.
Jeff pulled the books out reading the titles as he did so. in the bottom there under all the books were a set of pistols old but still usable.He pulled them out and smiled as he felt their weight in his hands.
Lucy started to sew her nightgown back together. But it was useless. It was too torn.
Jeff stood, he needed to find the ball and powder for the guns. He looked at Lucy and could tell she had given up on sewing her nightgown together. "Check under the bed there might be another chest." he said as he thought where to look for ammunition.
Lucy nodded and knelt down and peered under the bed.
Jeff went down the stairs again to look in the kitchen.
Lucy grunted as she pulled out another trunk from under the bed.
Jeff found a powder horn and some ball shots for the pistols and he set to loading them.
Lucy cussed when when noticed the trunk was locked.
Jeff finished loading the pistols and called to Lucy.
