Looks like all reviews are in. It's really up to the team captains if they prefer to handle the rolls themselves or have whoever is available roll. I don't think Danielle minds if anyone else rolls, Angie has been handling a few rolls, and I daresay neither of them will complain if someone else goes ahead and rolls this time. :)

I wonder if encyclopedias would work as a series? I am not volunteering to read one mind you...

Oh for sure. A ton of the good old 80s/90s tween series get beyond that. Babysitter's Club, Goosebumps, etc etc.

message 256: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 476 comments Nancy Drew! I'm sure they went that far. I never read Goosebumps. After my time. Perhaps I should.

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1935 comments I'm going to read A Very Marian Christmas which is a #7 book.

Week 10
The Book of the Dead (Pendergast, #7; Diogenes, #3) by Douglas Preston
597 pages
11/17/18

Seventh in the Pendergast series.

This book is less of a stand alone and more of a continuation of the last one. Our hero, Aloysius Pendergast is framed by his brother for a crime he did not commit. Meanwhile Diogenes (the brother) has even more sinister plans in store.
Ancient Egyptian curses, a new museum grand exhibit, recurring beloved characters, this book has it all.
Honestly though, this is not one of my favorite Pendergast books. Don't get me wrong, I adore this series, and this one moves the story along nicely, but I found it a bit of a stretch.

Caraval (Caraval, #1) by Stephanie Garber by Stephanie Garber
Qualifications: Published in 2017.
Finished: 11/20/2018
Rating: 4 stars
Review:

I knew going in that I was going to like this book. I can overlook a lot of things to read a magical carnival type story as long as the world building is satisfactory. I definitely felt the magic and world of Caraval was lovely and entrancing and I was truly invested for that alone.

Because, honestly? Scarlett? Was a bit of a twit. Not real bright. Whined a lot. I can give it to her for not being self-centered at least, but I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes when she did or said something so blatantly dimwitted.

Big fan of the sister and the love interest though so at least we have that going for us.

The twists were awesome, the ending was awesome, and THAT CLIFFHANGER THOUGH. I'll definitely be picking up the next one soon.

Review:
This book is a solid 3 1/2 tempted to give it 4 stars if not for the last few pages. Loved the characters and plot. I was guessing the whole time on who done it? I did solve it before the ending but it was a surprise. Easy to read and fun. Just don't know why the last chapter had to be added?

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1935 comments Just a reminder - No roll this week for Thanksgiving. So reviews aren't due until next Thursday and the roll will be on the 30th.

Nope, you've got until next week to finish your books. I know it's a bit confusing if you're playing both SS and SSS since the holiday scheduling works differently on each.

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments Okay thanks for clearing that up!

The Darkest Secret (Lords of the Underworld #7) by Gena Showalter by Gena Showalter
Qualifications:Seventh book in the series
Finished:11/24/18
Rating:4 Stars
Review:Amun the Keeper of Secrets is overwhelmingly demonic since his trip to hell. Amun can't speak and bare all the pain he's going through right now. Haidee is a Hunter that can't explain the voice she's hearing but when she finds it. She can't stop herself from soothing the man that looks so much like Micah. What will Haidee do now?

Book: A Very Marian Christmas by Lucy Lennox
How it Fits: #7 in Made Marian Series
Date Read: 11/23
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: This actually wasn't what I was expecting but I really enjoyed it. The two main MC's weren't actually Mariand but I liked them. I also loved seeing all the Marians and how they were doing but I liked that it had a new romance and a plot so it wasn't just a book about the Marian happily ever after Christmas.

I really enjoyed this book. I had no idea that Gabrielle Union had been through so many things. She told her story in a humorous way, in most chapters. I have been recommending it to friends.

New Tricks (Andy Carpenter #7) by David Rosenfelt
New Tricks
Read: November 17
Rating: 3,5 stars

This series gets more and more focused on dogs and dog rescue, going to court over dogs etc. I am a dog lover so I do find these stories cute and kind of funny, but I still look for a little more seriousness . Still all in all it was a good read.

message 278: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 476 comments Annika, if you are a dog lover, give The Labrador Pact by Matt Haig a try. Matt Haig is one of those authors whose every book is different from the one before, and I have enjoyed them all. This one, though, really got to me.

Too early, guys. No rolling before Friday. You were about an hour ahead of time, so you'll have to re-roll when it's time.

message 282: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 476 comments I haven't used a substitute book choice, so we should be able to get the bonus point after our next roll. Assuming we get a good roll that is...

Am I right that the books we read for the win have to be new (to us) books and not rereads? We are, I think, in second place, and close to the end.

Are we not rolling on Easter Standard Time? It was midnight Eastern Standard Time When I Rolled.

message 291: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 476 comments I think I saw somewhere that it is midwest standard time, but I don't want to speak out of turn.

I was the only one who had chosen a book anyway, and I can still read it, so no harm no foul.

Ah - mountain standard time - that would make sense :)

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1935 comments 88 would have been a good time to use our 4 bonus points taking us to 92.

message 294: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann | 391 comments I could easily switch if we want to use out bonus

message 295: by Danielle Gypsy Soul (last edited Nov 30, 2018 08:19PM) (new)

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1935 comments That would put us on 92 - what does everyone think? I just think 88 is kind of a hard number and we need to use our bonus at some point.

I don't want to make the switch unless everyone is okay with that - or at least the people who have picked a book so far.

message 296: by Annika (new)

Annika I don't mind either way.

Danielle Gypsy Soul wrote: "Are we not rolling on Easter Standard Time? It was midnight Eastern Standard Time When I Rolled. "

From the rules that noone reads:
✸Deadline cutoffs are based on US Central time zone

:)

I frankly have no idea if or how much that is earlier/later than Eastern Standard, Midwest Standard, or any of the million other timezones you have in the US - I just know what it corresponds to in GMT+2, which is where I am, so that's when I tend to hover around the threads on rolling day. ;)

message 298: by Cait S (new)

Cait S I don't care but team 2 is at 101 so even if we do, it doesn't change anything. I'm fine with using it though just in case they don't finish or something.

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1935 comments OK - if you guys don't mind let's go with 92 so we can use the bonus we worked hard for!
