I do understand, but the review part of the review post is very much non-negotiable. Perhaps in a future round your schedule might be better able to accommodate a commitment to a game with firm deadlines to keep.

Not a problem Lexi. I have multiple choices for every number from 1 - 9. My TBR is a little ridiculous. :) Go ahead and read the alternate.

Allison Ann | 502 comments Week 8 Information
Spot 55

We are on spot 55. If we are keeping our spot, we are on 55. I assume we can, but am checking with Denise to see if she wants us to roll again. If we are staying, then we can read.

Book #55 in series
Book #5 in series
Alternate - Published 2015

If book #5 is too hard for too many people, we do have bonus points. Not sure if we can still use them, but I'm assuming until we claim our spot we can change. So we could use 1-3 points to get to 56, 57 or 58. Let's take a quick vote (I want everyone to have time to read their books). Stay on 55 or use some points? I'll wait a couple of hours to see if anyone has a preference and then I'll claim our spot on the thread.

Allison, thank you for taking over the captain duties. I think we should save our bonus points since we're a little behind the rest of the teams. I plan on not using the alternate list, so that will be another bonus point.

Rating: 4 stars
Review: I had every intention of taking 2 or 3 days to read this book, but once I got started, I could not put it down. THIS is the type of story you want to read to get into the Christmas spirit! I can usually count on the Aunt Dimity books to be good, but this one was fabulous. And it was definitely a different kind of mystery Lori has to solve.

Allison Ann | 502 comments Thanks Lanelle. I read Aunt Dimity years ago and I remember them being such cute stories that I enjoyed.

How is everyone else doing? I had a lazy Sunday yesterday (my first since April) and it was lovely. Of course I have tons of work to catch up on now. :) But that is the way self-employment goes. Nobody around to be you when you aren't being you. ;) I'm about halfway through my book. I'm not liking this series as much since the MC got married. But I'll prevail.

Hope you can all check in once a week and let us know you're still around and what's happening in your life. Thanks so much. Happy reading.

Review : I liked this series until Roe got married. Yes it is dated and yes the MC is the typical cozy mystery meddler, but she had a brain. Now it seems like all she has is a lying husband. And laundry. She did laundry at least three times. The mystery was okay but I'm just not enjoying the background anymore. The quite casual racism was new too. Very odd book.

Allison, I'm curious to know if you'll continue the Aurora Teagarden books. I agree with you about Martin and how Roe changed once she married him. There are some serious changes in the next story, though.

Allison Ann | 502 comments Hey Lanelle! Have you finished the series? It's too bad, because I liked the first few books quite a bit. I like Charlaine Harris' writing (usually) and she's got a hell of an imagination. I will finish the series eventually, I'm a completist but one with a procrastination problem. :D What I generally do with series I don't particularly like anymore, like this one and Stephanie Plum (who I would gladly kill with my bare hands to make it stop) and Stone Barrington (whose midlife crisis gives me eyestrain with all the rolling), etc. is wait until the next in series fits a bunch of challenges and then grit my teeth and read. :D At least they are short, fast reads.

Review: Honestly I had a lot of trouble getting into this book. I had read and really enjoyed the second book in this trilogy, but it was so many years ago that I didn't remember anything about it or the characters. I was bored the entire book and had it not been for SS I most likely would have DNF this one...

Review: Sci/Fi fantasy has been really hit or miss for me as a genre lately. This book was a 'meh' reading experience. It should have been great, given the premise, but I found it confusing and frankly, beyond the descriptions of the colonies and the Next, it wasn't very engaging. I really didn't care much about the characters. I get it - Nona's a lost child (at 55 - they age slowly with enough money to counteract the process) looking for a career, eventually turning diplomat. Charlie is the gruff environmentalist/moral core of the story and Crystal is the sacrificial lamb who makes people rethink their stance on AI. Unfortunately, there's not a lot that's particularIy original about them. I just think that the AI vs human trope has been handled much more skillfully in other novels. Not a total bust, but not great either. Think I'll pass on the second in the series.

I've read the whole series about three times. I enjoy Charlaine Harris writing, as well. My favorite series of hers is the Lily Bard mysteries, with the Harper Connelly series coming in a close second. I appreciate the complexity of Lily's and Harper's characters.

I would encourage you to read the next couple of books about Roe.

I had started this series years ago but stopped reading them for some reason. Well this challenge was the perfect reason to pick them up again. I was constantly guessing who the killer was and was stumped until the very last few pages. Tho there were some parts of the book that were a little more graphic than what I care to read, it was still a good book. I'm excited to see what Lindsey Boxer will have to deal with during the rest of the series.

There are hackers arrested for cyber crimes but are given a choice jail or hack for the government. They need to work together to figure out what is really going on and wind up having to save the world but how are they going to do it when the computers have taken over everything. If you enjoyed the tv series Person of Interest this will really be a great read for you. It moves fast and furious. You don't know who will make to the end of the book.

Allison Ann | 502 comments Lily Bard is my favourite too. Harper Connelly almost had her beat until the "annoying situation" developed. Sookie is growing on me after 10 books and I'm rooting for Roe to knock off her husband and then she might take the number one spot.

I read the first Midnight Texas book, but I honestly don't remember much about it and I haven't gone back for book 2 yet.

I've never read the Lily Bard books (but I have the first few on my shelves)... I read all four of the Harper Connelly books, and I really loved that series, even though that "situation" was just slightly weird. I read the first two Roe books but never went any further with it, it just never really caught my interest to continue. I've read the first 7 Sookie books and while I wouldn't necessarily say I love her I obviously enjoy her enough to continue reading.
