Grey Sister (Book of the Ancestor, #2) by Mark Lawrence
Book: Grey Sister
How it fits: #2 in the Book of the Ancestor series
Pages: 400
Rating: Five stars
Review: These books are so deliciously complex - I'm glad that the author put a recap of Red Sister at the beginning, since I'd forgotten, except for Nona, who was still alive and who was killed off. This installment fleshes out the Abeth world a bit more. The importance of the shiphearts becomes clearer as well. If there a negative to be found, it has to be the demon Keot who's taken up residence in her mind. I don't think Nona needs that particular complication added to all the other plot twists and challenges. It seems a bit excessive. It will be great to see how this all resolves in Holy Sister.

Tara | 368 comments I will have mine posted after work today. I’ll get it done on my lunch break and will be able to post sometime shortly after about 5pmCST. Sorry this week hit hard with my daughter getting bronchitis so I was thrown off for the week and didn’t get as much reading time.

The Final Detail (Myron Bolitar, #6) by Harlan Coben

Book: The Final Detail by Harlan Coben
How it fits: Myron Bolitar #6
Pages: 384
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Oh, Myron Bolitar! What a funny guy! Like not Stephanie Plum funny ... but kind of a darker funny (does that make sense?!) It had been awhile since I had read the 5th book in this series and there were more than a few references to something that occurred in that book that I struggled to remember. Luckily it didn't hamper my enjoyment of this one.

2nd book in series
Rating: 5
Read: 10/12/18
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I am flag that the NeuroLink will be redeveloped. I’m kind of annoyed that the last sentence of the book was a question and the quote from the article didn’t help me. The part of the book that took place in Zeros mind was well thought out. None of the traps mentioned in the book were expected. I loved the fighting scenes especially those while playing Warcross.

Review: This is such a fun fantasy series. Lots of adventure, magic, creatures, and a bit of romance. I know it's written for a younger audience, but I think adults can read it just fine. I listened to about 80% of the story on a road trip, and I really enjoyed the performance. I finished reading the last 20% when I got home. This won't be the last time I read these stories.

Fifth Grave Past the Light (Charley Davidson, #5) by Darynda Jones
book: Fifth Grave Past the Light
Finished 10/14/18
Pages: 339
How it fits: Alternate Purple cover
Rating: 5 stars
Review: Charley is trying to figure out her relationship to the sexy Reyes who is living next door and is the son of Satan. Charley is a grim reaper helping souls cross to the other side while working as a private eye. Blond female ghosts keep popping up in her apartment and she knows somehow this is a serial killer issue. She maintains her flippant attitude all during the book which sometimes gets a little annoying. I know its a defense mechanism but sometimes it is a bit much. But I still enjoyed the story very much.

The Grass Harp, Including A Tree of Night and Other Stories by Truman Capote
Title: The Grass Harp, Including A Tree of Night and Other Stories by Truman Capote
How it fits: Published between 1950 and 2000 - pub date 1956
Pages: 272
Rating: Four stars
Review: I generally like Capote's short fictions compared to his novels, so this collection was pretty satisfying for me. The Grass Harp of the title was an intriguing story of two very different sisters who take in a young orphan boy. One sister betrays the other over money, which sets off a chain of slightly comical events in their small town. The other stories were a little uneven. I read Children on their Birthdays in high school and loved it. Several others, like Master Misery, Miriam, Shut a Final Door and A Tree of Night all have a Southern Gothic, supernatural quality to them, which I liked. Miriam, in particular, was very creepy - a dour widow with a very boring life suddenly finds herself under the spell of a white haired little girl/succubus that she cannot break free of. The others I was not so wild about, hence the four star rating.

The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman
How it fits: Mrs. Pollifax #2
Pages: 176
Rating: 4 stars
Review: After having been a little under impressed by the first book in this series, I picked up the second book on a whim last time I was at the used book store. I figured for $1 if I read it great, if not so be it... I figured at 176 pages it would be if nothing else, a quick read. To be honest, I liked this book much better than the first book. I got to see more of Mrs. Pollifax's quirks. She gets herself into some doozy positions, not all of which are plausible .. but hey, it's fiction! So not a terrible book and if I happen to come across the third book at some point I'll probably pick it up.

If you already know you won't have time to read that week because you'll be so busy with school, you can also ask for a pre-arranged absence. Then you can sit that roll out without consequences for the team. It just needs to be settled before the roll. :)

That is a much better plan than mine.

message 181: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you. How do I do that?

message 182: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7437 comments Mod
Usually, you'd just send me a pm or post in the discussion thread, explain when you need to take a break and why, and ask me to approve a pre-arranged absence. Since I already know what's going on in this case, we can skip that step. It's approved. :) So, am I reading this right - you wouldn't be able to manage a book for the roll on 2 November, due on the 9th?

Since you're team captain, you should also consider whether you'll have time to do the organisational stuff, collecting your team's reviews, rolling, etc. that week - if you don't, you'll need to arrange for another team member to take care of that that week.

You (or whoever collects the reviews for the week in question) then just put "pre-arranged absence" down next to your name instead of a review.

Slytherpuff, please do include ALL the required information in your completion post:
★ Book title, author, cover, how it qualifies for the spot you're on, date finished, rating, review (min. 3 sentences)

You can skip linking the cover when you're not using a cover alternate, but I do need the rest. Thank you!

On another note, Joyce earned a bonus point for the team last week for reading a book with >500 pages - which I'm only aware of because I remembered being impressed with her choice of such a long book while skimming over everyone's selection posts.
In future, would players who fulfill the requirements for earning a bonus point please add a note to that effect to their completion posts to help your captain keep track of them? Then when Slytherpuff drops by the Post Your Spot thread, she can add a note that the team has earned a bonus point to her post so I don't have to scour each thread to hunt them down. Thanks!

Sorry. Im on the app. I will get to it when I have a chance

For the week I’m absent it’s the week that starts November 2. I can do the reviews and rolls that day. The next two Friday’s I will probably need someone to do that for me because I have a performance those days. I will most likely be able to read a book for the second week since it’s not tech week.

Review:
Thomas Khatt is just minding his own business when his neighbor who dies in his arms turns him into a mountain lion. Now Thomas has to figure out this new world involving animals who can talk and become familiars to witches and wizards. There are quite a few funny characters in this book like a pyromaniac squirrel. Everybody seems to want Thomas for their own reasons and he has to try to figure out who is being honest with him and who is just trying to use him.

It was a fairly quick read and the world was pretty well fleshed out. I hope to read more of the series. This was a good first book for a series. I can see where they might want to go with the storylines.
