list. Eliz. Lowell has written some excellent books (to this reader's delight).

Just finished Vicious. I was surprised. Solid four star read. If you are even a little bit interested in mutant/superhero themed books, then I encourage you to check out out. A fresh, intelligent take on the subject. I realize why people raved about it. I recommend it!

Kerry Charles (kerryjcharles) | 3 comments I find myself picking up books that are quick-paced and are essentially stories within stories (even though the books themselves can be pretty lengthy!). Edward Rutherfurd (Sarum, Princes of Ireland, etc.) is a great example for fiction and Michael Lewis (Moneyball, The Big Short) for nonfiction. I love learning about how people think and how they interact with each other, which I think feeds into my love of cozies!

Yes, and the second book too! Murder of Crows. I'm *almost* 100% sure you are going to absolutely love them. I couldn't put either of them down; it was like a sickness. Laundry did not get done. ;)

I'm blaming all of you for my lack of sleep tonight :) Written in Red was available at the library and I've just finished the previous one, so I began it at night... At 1:00 am I had to force myself to put it down because I wake up at 05:30 am.

Yeah, I know, but I only had a couple chapters to go and couldn't put it down until I knew how it all came out. I'll go to bed at a decent time tonight - promise. ; )

This was definitely the weakest of the three. Ended the way I wanted as well. As a whole, I thought it was a good series.

These action thrillers usually aren't my thing, but thanks for that recommendation, Neva. I volunteer at a bookstore, and will remember that author for customers looking for a new read.

Brad Thor has a reputation as a squeaky clean writer who doesn't use profanity etc in his books. Although I'm yet to read his books. Action thrillers aren't my favorites either. But The Camel Club Series have captured my heart. There are 5 book in it. And I have rated 3 of them 5 stars, and 2, 4 stars.

message 4076: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I've got all the books of Robert B. Parker, but I fear he'll be inferior to the erratic Ellery Queen novels that I've read somewhat.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Luffy wrote: "I've got all the books of Robert B. Parker, but I fear he'll be inferior to the erratic Ellery Queen novels that I've read somewhat."

No way Parker can be inferior to anyone! The Spenser books are classic hard-boiled mysteries. I have seen interviews with other writers in that genre who point to him as one of the reasons they do what they do. LOOKING FOR RACHEL WALLACE is frequently referenced by some as what put them on the road to being writers.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Lisa wrote: "Robert B. Parker, Robert Crais, and the master, Dick Francis. Love Felix Francis's books, too."

It doesn't get any better than Parker and Crais! I read some Dick Francis some years ago and liked them, but nothing like my enthusiasm for Parker & Crais!

That confirms my fears. Hard boiled simply means it's not funny and has boring parts.

Spenser is NEVER boring and he has a very sarcastic wit. You have obviously never read a good hardboiled mystery if you think there's never any humor involved. Spenser and Hawk can crack me up sometimes.

message 4081: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) The fault often lies with me. English not being my mother tongue, I miss all the double entendres and puns of, say, the Stephanie Plum series. What makes me laugh are books like Laura Levine's, and David Thorne's The Internet is a Playground by David Thorne That's about it.

In terms of stand up comedy, George Carlin's jokes go over my head, and Bill Hicks... and Bill Bailey(in the program QI) make me laugh a lot.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Melodie wrote: "Spenser and Hawk can crack me up sometimes. "

Despite what I've said above, sometimes I don't laugh at jokes that I 'get'. For me, the writers have to come up with a really witty joke to make me laugh, not this watered down stuff that cracks you up "sometimes". Can you give me an example of a good joke in those books?

Didn't think about the language barrier. If Carlin is over your head then you might not get the sarcasm. Try one sometime. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. I won't make any further recommendations or comments to you about something other than cozies.

Why not. I'm certain there are potentially many books on which we'll agree. I was just being flippant because it's early days for me on this board. Friends?

I've been reading First Grave on the Right this weekend, currently just over halfway through. Funny, but wouldn't you know it's another author with a "just then" fettish. :-/

Really? It's been awhile since I've read the first one. I've never noticed the 'just then' abuse and couldn't begin to tell you if it's still being abused in Sixth... Now I sort of with I had the e-book version so I could do a "find"....

THG is a good, maybe a very good book, but I can't read it again. It doesn't have that kind of staying power for me.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I'm going to read The Innocent (Will Robie,#1) by David Baldacci . I think few people here read thrillers, am I right?

Better late than never. I loved it. If you end up liking it I would also recommend The Knife of Never Letting Go The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness . It is the only other Dystopian series I loved (more than HG to be honest :) Most of the other series have fallen short for me but I am picky!

You're not picky. Most Dystopian novels are mediocre.

message 4096: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) The solution for that is to re read that book till you can't bear to read it another time. It worked for me(Harry Potter 'victim')

I love thrillers too. Of course, my favorites are usually mystery/thrillers.

I'm reading Beatrice Munson which is solidly chick lit.
