When you're not reading a cozy....
Heather - You should definitely read The Canterville Ghost! It's short & quick and so much fun!! As for whether to see the movie first or not - generally I think it is better to read the book first but in this case I don't think it matters. There are some differences but both are extremely enjoyable.

I am glad to say that it didnt ruin the book for me.But there is just something about those characters coming to life in our own imaginations instead of through a casting directors. I missed that because I saw the actors faces while reading the book.I have always wondered what they would have looked like from my mind. I think I still prefer the book first. I hope you like that one.If you will, let me know what you think of the book.

So true! Although, sometimes you don't even have to actually see the movie to have the actor in your head while reading. That happened to me when I read both The Descendants and The Lincoln Lawyer. Though I had not seen either, just knowing who played the lead characters had the actors in my head while reading. Which, in this instance, wasn't necessarily a bad thing. ;-)

I'm currently reading The Snowman and like it very much. It's translated from Norwegian, but I'm enjoying the writing as well as the plot. It's hard- boiled but not TOO much, definitely not as much as the Steig Larson books.

I am reading Ranger's Apprentice, a YA fantasy/adventure but an Australian author. Another series books soon to be a movie. I think there are half a dozen so far in the series so I'll have time to catch up. I'm really enjoying it but I've only read the first 100 pages. The plot lines are creative and fresh but reminiscent of the favorites: HP and a bit of the Hunger Games. Fast reading. The Ruins of Gorlan
Started four last night/ today: The Dressmaker
, which has already sent me scurrying to Wikipedia to see what fashions by Lucille looked like; Murder With Puffins
, which is the second in a cozy mystery series that I read the first of several months ago; Sand Sharks
, which is one of two or three later books in this series that remain as part of my "batting cleanup" project, and Eight Million Ways to Die
, next in my series reread of the Scudder books. Hoping to race through a couple of these mysteries because I really want to read Gone Girl
and Rules of Civility
.
I'm reading The Seven Turns of the Snail's Shell which is a rather sweet romantic novel with a hint at a conspiracy.

I did like it -- I was a little let down because after all the talk I guess I expected something totally amazing... I rate it 4 stars

IMHO, The Hunger Games trilogy is quite an excellent read. I read them all back in 2010 shortly after the release of the 3rd book, MOCKINGJAY. I've recommended the books to so many people, a lot of them being folks who would have NEVER considered the books, and have had a lot of them come back and thank me for nudging them to pick them up!

Agreed. I was reluctant to try it when it was released but I loved it.
I'm another who ignored all the hype over The Hunger Games, only reluctantly picking it up when it was chosen as a group read in January 2009 by another group here. I was glad I'd picked up the first two books together, as I ended up reading them back-to-back -- but then had to wait an excruciating eight months for book three. Still haven't seen the movie, though.

He's finished the first four. He'll be excited to hear about the possible movie.
If there's going to be a movie, then I'll read them too. We like to read the books (and discuss them) then go see the movie and discuss it and how well (or not well) it was done vs. the book. We did it with the Twilight books, The Hunger Games and The Lightning Thief. (YA books are easier for us to quickly read and I can't always talk him into reading "boring" books like the Help, which I totally LOVED.)
I read a little bit of everything. Right now I'm struggling through The Sight The Sight (a fantasy book). Fantasy is NOT my genre. My favorite books are: Romances (leaning more towards the sweet side and far away from the 50 Shades end of things), Cozy Mysteries (particularly the humorous ones) and novels especially the emotion packed/tear jerkers or medical/science thrillers.
Just finished a delightful book called "Dog On It" by Spencer Quinn".
For one of the key characters/sleuths being a dog, I went into this one with reservations. But I was pleasantly surprised. I will be looking for the rest in this entertaining series.

I've got book 4 in the Amazon shopping cart for next month. I'm actually getting it now to read for an 'Alphabet Challenge' on another GoodReads group. Qs aren't easily filled!
Finished The Graveyard Queen trilogy by Amanda Stevens this morning. I tried to finish it last night, but was so tired after neighbors kept me up until after 3am the night before, that I was out by 11pm last night. If you like paranormal rom-suspense, I highly recommend this set of books. In fact, I am hosting a giveaway on my blog for book one of the series (ends Sunday!), for anyone interested.
Now I need to decide what to read next.... :-\

Finally starting A Game of Thrones first book. Seven to go but my digital library only offer the first five books. Got to get through the first one first.
I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Inn at Rose Harbor. It's the first book in a new series by Debbie Macomber, and so far, I like it. I don't understand, though, why she ended her Cedar Cove series, only to start a new series also set in Cedar Cove!
Karen M wrote: "Finally starting A Game of Thrones first book. Seven to go but my digital library only offer the first five books. Got to get through the first one first."That is a long one. I listened to it on audiobook and it took me weeks.
Currently reading A Sand County Almanac: With Other Essays on Conservation from Round River by Aldo Leopold and doing a reread of Little Women.
I usually only read one book at a time, the exception being when one is a nonfiction, such as Sand County. It's one of those books best read a bit at a time. And how sad is it that I fell asleep earlier this evening while reading Little Women? :-\

I just finished
on my Kindle. While I liked it, I still consider the series finished several books back before the series hit TV and she started writing more.

The Inn lets her explore new characters while she keeps in touch with her old characters from time to time.

I seem to be moving right along with it but I don't think I'll put in for the next book right away. I'm really enjoying it.
Waiting on A Clash of Kings so in the mean time I read Tipping the Velvet and The Unbearable Lightness of Scones and I am currently reading Dead and Gone
Karen M wrote: "Waiting on A Clash of Kings so in the mean time I read Tipping the Velvet and The Unbearable Lightness of Scones and I am currently reading Dead and Gone"I have had TIPPING THE VELVET in The Pile for some time now. I really need to dig it out and get it read!
I'm going to be starting Cruising Attitude: Tales of Crashpads, Crew Drama, and Crazy Passengers at 35,000 Feet tonight.
I'm reading one of those "continuation of a classic" books, Jane Rochester and it seems to follow the style of Charlotte Bronte. I'm enjoying it anyway.
I also like reading Travel magazines, a form of escapism. Also Science Magazines and National Geographic.
Still finishing The Dressmaker
and enjoying it more than the speed with which I'm reading it would indicate. Also reading The White Monkey
which is the fourth of nine volumes of Galsworthy's Forsyte Chronicles -- Galsworthy is probably my all-time favorite author. Between this and the Alcott, I've got the first part of the twentieth century pretty well cornered at the moment. Reading The Book Thief
for a challenge and am not far enough into it yet to know what I think of it. Started Losing Mum and Pup
which I've been meaning to read since Mom died in 2008 but Dad followed last year and I haven't been able to pick this up until now. Also reading
Forever Liesl which is a feel-good memoir of making "The Sound of Music" and is proving to be a quick read. Last and so far least, Savannah: Or a Gift For Mr. Lincoln
which I expected to grab me a lot more than it has. Just finished A Walk Among the Tombstones
, Sand Sharks
, and Rules of Civility
within the last week or so. About R of C: stunning book. Edith Wharton meets F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I just found a copy of The Help at the library's used book sale, so am hoping to work that in soon, too. Have not yet seen the movie, and this is one case where I really do want to read the book first.
