I loved this book. First, I'm a sucker for a story with a military hero, especially a Marine. Second, it was a great book. There's a serial rapist in Kansas City and Maggie is on the task force to help find this guy. Maggie is also a single mother of a 9 year old son and a survivor herself. John has just returned to KC and is returning to work at the fire department, this time as an arson investigator. He and Maggie meet as he is moving into the apartment next door to her. He is there when strange accidents start happening in the apartment building, and steps up to help protect Maggie and Travis. I really liked the way that John bonded so quickly with Travis. He also found himself enjoying the time he spent with them, and discovered that being around them made him happy - something he hadn't been in awhile. I also liked the way that while he was available to help, he didn't take over but supported Maggie in what she needed to do. Maggie hadn't been this close to a man since her ex-husband and was amazed at how quickly she developed feelings for John. I really liked seeing the way she opened up with him. I also liked the fact that she simply accepted his war injuries for what they were and didn't make a big deal about them.

Pretty fast moving and readable. Another in a long line of books about the KCPD. I liked the hero and how he had been in unrequited love with another woman for years but once he saw Maggie he was over it. I wasn't as fond of Maggie because even though she was a cop, she was still a pretty weak person. The relationship moved VERY fast. I'm not sure even a week had passed and they were all in love but I forgave it because it was well written and in romantic suspense you usually don't have as much time to work with or the crime element becomes ludicrously drawn out. The crime was interesting but the over arcing serial killer story was not completed in this book so we'll need to see the next story. I have an idea of who the next couple will be but it's just that, an idea. So that's nice because I don't like heavy handed sequel bait.

Survival instinct

Having survived an abusive marriage , Maggie has created a new life for her and her son, Travis. When her ex shows up again, she turns to former Marine and Kansas City fireman, John. Together they work through issues and search for a serial killer. Strong characters and spine tingling twists and turns pull you from the beginning to the end. A must read from Julie Miller. Definitely doesn’t disappoint.

In Miller’s romantic suspense novel, Maggie Wheeler was both a cop and a survivor. Having survived a traumatic event ten years earlier, Maggie was surprised when John Murdock moved in next door and her son immediately bonded with him. Unexplained accidents begin to happen and John’s protective instincts kick in. The more time he spends with Maggie, the more convinced he is that she knows more about what’s happening than she admits. A wounded warrior himself, John can do nothing but protect the woman and child while fighting the attraction that blossoms between them.

A fast-paced, action packed addition to The Precinct Task Force series with an ending I didn’t see coming!

So I have never read a Harlequinn Book before, and this could just be how they are formatted, but the words were huge on my Kindle, spacing was all funky and so yeah, that honestly took a bit away for me as I was reading, because it seemed like it was just thrown together.

Past that...the book had a lot of great moments between the two main characters but I found myself starting to skim quite a bit. The overall "mystery" that was the core of the book outside of the romance, didn't grab my attention and I mostly became interested in their relationship more than anything else.

I had two major issues with this story. The first that the author spends way too much time telling instead of showing, which makes the book very slow & tedious at times even though it's just over 200 pages. A character sits in their car and thinks about the past. Or sits in their office and goes over the past. Or stands in their kitchen and thinks about the recent past...etc. It gets old very fast. When the H and h finally have their "first date" we don't read about it as it happens. Instead we get the heroine sitting around after the fact basically telling the reader what happened.

My other issue is how incompetent the heroine is as a cop & how dumb she is as a person. It made it hard to sympathize with her. At one point in the middle of the story her abusive ex publicly violates his parole & she could easily have him sent back to jail thus ending her troubles. Of course that would also end the story. Instead she repeatedly does stupid things in order to keep the plot going. On the other hand, maybe the author also just doesn't know enough about police procedure.

I also have an issue with a character we're supposed to view as tough, who's independent and who's taken charge of her life after being victimized by a man - who then turns to another man to save her. She actually does next to nothing for herself. It's all left up to the hero to fix everything, which he does purely because of how she looks (she's a stranger who's not particularly nice to him) and because his own need to take care of the world. In contrast, she is a basket case from page one. Maybe if the author had shown her as together & competent at other times the impression would be different. Sadly, we don't see that.

This is one of many cases where I think an author can only write what they know. Throughout the book it seemed the heroine was very good at being codependent and playing a victim. But boundaries, toughness, or actual self-reliance did not exist in her world.

Case in point - one minor character who could easily be viewed as an entitled heiress having a bridezilla fit is instead called out as projecting the persona of a strong, powerful professional woman. The reader knows she's not exactly a bridezilla. But that the author seems to think having a breakdown at a bridal parlor & just taking off is how you project power, strength, and professionalism is rather telling.

Oh, and stories where a couple spend all of a few days together and it's happily ever after always make me roll my eyes. Here it's worse since a child is involved. This being a romance, of course the child instantly picks the hero as his new dad.

(Trigger warning: rape) I bought this one when it was on special recently for 99c. I love the rescue trope, even though it is becoming increasingly hard for me to find books which give me the payoff I’m after. Maggie Wheeler is a Sergeant for the Kansas City PD and has recently qualified to apply for her detective shield. She’s a single mother, with a 10 year old son, Travis. Former marine and now arson investigator Captain John Murdock moves in next door to her and her son. Maggie’s ex-husband, Danny, has recently been released from prison for his brutal rape of Maggie a decade before (do the math) and she is nervous of meeting new men. Even so, Travis quickly bonds with John and Maggie finds herself attracted for the first time since her attack. The romance moved super fast – this stretched my credulity to breaking point particularly given that Maggie hasn’t had sex with anyone since she was raped for a weekend by her violent (now ex-) husband. That she had no hang ups about getting intimate with someone after so long, except for a fear she wouldn’t be very good at it, seemed unrealistic. For a mother as protective of her son as Maggie is, the thought that she’d be prepared to move in with John after mere days of being in a relationship was also a bit much (I’m practicing the art of understatement here).

Ok, Ms Miller's long-running series flies in the face of the series going on too long theory. Somehow, possibly because she visits family, friends, co-workers, and possibly because the books are short so she doesn't run out of things to say, she's managed to keep this series going through over 20 books.

So we meet our H, whose sister was the h in the previous book, and who'd been the partner of one of the original h's ages ago. He's dealing with the loss of a leg, and assorted issues stemming from having been in Afghanistan. And we meet our h, a desk sergeant with her own set of issues stemming from having been married to an abusive rapist. And her ex is back.

There were some things near the end that I *really* thought the h was dumb about. Like, she gets off from work, her vehicle has been vandalized by her ex, she gets someone from the police dept to take her home and... she doesn't get him to see her to her apt(!). I don't know about you, but if I were being stalked, and I knew the man had access to my apt (long story there), I would NOT go home alone. Ever. Well, at least until the bastage was dead. I was also more than a little surprised that the h hadn't had more intensive self defense training under the circumstances.

IN spite of the issues though, the book was decent.

This is probably one of my favorite books from the Intrigue line. The heroine had suffered a great deal in her life but she has managed to come out on top. It's understandable that she still has a sense of fear & weakness concerning her ex husband but she still manages to hold her head high through the fear. Enter the sexy hero, hero being a very appropriate term. Just reading the description had me drooling! He's my perfect man rolled up in a delicious package. 6'5", retired Marine, ex firefighter, intelligent (has to be in order to evoke an arson investigator), muscular, protective, & slightly broody....definitely high in the yum factor. There are obviously escapees from Crazytown in this book & they seem to flock to Maggie like flies to honey. I'm excited to read the rest of the books in the series. I'm curious to see who the Rose Red Rapist is (I have a feeling it's someone we've already been introduced to) & wondering if I'm right as to who is gonna hook up with who from the task force. Definitely enjoyable so pick it up if you're looking for something quick, entertaining, & intriguing.

My one gripe about this story is pretty much the same as most romance novels. It takes the span of like 3 or 4 days & "love" is just being thrown around, which I just don't find believable.

Maggie Wheeler's life has not been easy but things are starting to look up. Being asked to be part of the task force formed to catch the Red Rose Rapist is her chance to prove her skills as a cop.

John Murdock has always answered the call to serve and proctect. He moves in next door to Maggie and soon relizes that danger is breathing down Maggie and her son's necks. Offering to help John and Maggie start falling for each other. But will Maggie's past destory the budding romance? And will the task force manage to catch the Red Rose Rapist before they strike again?

Julie Miller delivers a great start to what looks to be another great series. Along with all the new faces are old friends from her past books. Plus she gives us a new villian that will bring shivers to your spine. I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the task force as they work together to bring down the Red Rose Rapist.

I loved that the hero was a wounded veteran from Afghanistan. The hero John lost a leg in service to his country and has just finished his rehab. John returns home to try and pickup the pieces to his life. He was a firefighter, but with his injury he can no longer do his previous job, so he has been given an opportunity to work on the arson squad. The heroine Maggie is a cop with a secret. Her ex-husband was abusive and had tried to kill her. He's just been released from prison and has started stalking her. Julie Miller makes you care deeply for the characters. This one is a definite keeper.

Nice, entertaining reading with believable and real characters. The background story going on is gripping and interesting, though it's a bit disappointing that part of it is not really getting a closure in the end. I find it very refreshing that while both leading charcters have lots of baggage due to their past experiences, they deal well with it, and it's a nice change to read about characters who had such problems, but are already at the leaving-behind-them-stage, and don't drag the reader through the whole dark experience of it.

I love this series! I don't read many "imprint" series books but Julie Miller's Precinct Task Force series is great.

There is a connected plot through the book of the Kansas City (is that in Kansas or Missouri?) Police trying to catch a serial rapist. And then there is the primary story of romance in the Police. The suspense and the mystery are done really well, the women are strong, and the men are macho, loyal and sexy!

I will definitely continue this series!

This book is decent from the "big strong man" perspective, but not as much from the "wounded hero" perspective. I found it kind of improbable that a guy with a prosthetic leg would apparently not own a pair of crutches, such that when some threatening noise comes from outside the apartment he takes the time to put his leg on well enough to run/jump down stairs. Uh... no.

I think this was one of my favorites of Julie's books and I can't quite put my finger on why. The characters are so complex and I love the way I am picking up characters from other of her books. I only wish it had been longer.

Really enjoyed the light mystery romance this book had. Better with historicals, but I am finding I like contemp. mysteries as well. Wished I had known the mystery didn't finish in this book. I will now have to find the next book!!! Great read.

First off, I picked up this book on an utter whim on a insane shopping spree at a warehouse close out book sale. I wasn't expecting much because I plucked it out of a pile of similarly colored Harlequins. And besides that, anybody who has seen my review of romance books is probably aware we have a love hate relationship. I love to read them, but they usually make me feel very hateful for one reason or another.

Usually because I think a character is acting particularly stupid or they've completely flubbed up how something works just for the sake of the plot making the story completely unbelievable and painful to suffer through.

This one, while it’s got it’s cliches and head-banging moments, was relatively well written and planned out. Especially since it’s a Harlequin. (Let’s admit it, when you see the color matched covers for these bad boys do you really expect quality?)

The only two cringe worth moments were where we had to refer to Maggie as a “Momma bear” which just makes me cringe because it’s over used and just… okay seriously, most animals are productive of there young, okay. Pick something else. A lion or a tiger or a wolf. Okay? OKAY.

Next off, we used the old ‘we’re not having sex, we’re making love’ line. I’m sorry, are we preteens? You do still realize that it’s sex, right?

Other than that, the story line is interesting. We get Maggie, who is definitely damaged and did not just fall in to hunky John-the-marine-firefighter’s arms. It took awhile. Also, the kid wasn’t annoying which I sometimes find the children in a lot of adult books tend to be far too mature and well behaved and, come on. Anyone whose ever been around a child is aware that no matter how *good* a kid is, they are going to be obnoxious, loud or inappropriate at some point.

But in general I would very much recommend this one. The sex isn't particularly explicit so it's not exactly steaming up the windows but I thought it was a good story and while the mystery wasn't much, the characters weren't stupid about it.

I really loved this book! I'm a sucker for books with military Hero's. This is part of a series, but each book is a stand alone. The series is about The rose Red rapist of Kansas city, and the KCPD, and a small task force of Police officers trying to find and capture the rapist before he strikes again. The police department has very few clues to go on.

Maggie is part of that task force. Her special talent is being able to talk to the victims. She was a victim once before, and can understand some of what they are going through. Her husband beat her, and raped her, and she ended up in the hospital. He went to jail for beating Maggie. Now he is out and stalking her. Strange things starts to happen as soon as her ex gets out of jail. Maggie is a single mother to her 9 year old son.
Maggie meets her sexy new neighbor by being stuck in a elevator with him. Her son instantly likes John. Maggie has too much going on to date, or even look at the opposite sex. John is a marine, coming home injured from the war. He lost his leg in a explosion. He is attempting to find a new normal to his life. He was a fire fighter before the military. Now he is going back to work for the fire department, but without his leg he can no longer be on the front lines. he is stuck in a office, investigating the fires afterwards. He feels like he is not useful.
I loved the way throughout the story Maggie teaches John that he is more a man after his accident that he was before. He is still a great protector. He can do more with one leg, and his fake leg, than most men can do with two legs. John gives Maggie the strength and courage to face her ex.
This is a really great suspense. We know Maggie is being stalked, and strange things are happing. However we don't know if it is her ex behind them, or if it is the rose red rapist, or just another creep. I love the ending. It kept me on the edge of my seat... So many twist and turns that I never saw coming.

This is the first novel of Julie Miller I have read. The Marine Next Door is one of those books a reader comes across every now and then and is just undecided if they liked it or not. The story was interesting and the characters were likable for the most part. I thought I was buying a romantic story about a ex Marine who was dealing with loosing his leg and getting on with his life along with the heroine of the story finally putting her life back together after being abused and raped by her ex husband ten years before. For the most part I did get that but almost 65% of the book was on a serial rapist that the task force was looking for and a ex husband who was terrorizing the heroine. So much time was on these details I found the romance between John Murdock, our ex Marine and Maggie Wheeler, our single mom heroine, forced and fake. Plus I will not even get into how the heroine, Maggie, took her gun out a few times that made me think is this woman ready to be a police detective? So I am still not sure whether I liked this story or not. I will read Ms. Miller's next book, Kansas City Cowboy, I just hope it is better than this one is.

First of "The Precinct: Task Force" series. John Murdock, a retired Marine due to sever injury, has taken a new job with the Kansas City Fire Department since he can no longer fight fires. As he tries to put his life back together, he moves into a vintage apartment building and is immediately intrigued by his next-door neighbor. Maggie is apparently a single mom with a curious son and a cop.

She is very leery of any entanglement with anyone and prefers to keep to herself and protect herself and her son. The suspense increases with mysterious happenings in the building and things that appear to affect the seventh floor alone.

Maggie's appointment to the Task Force hunting a rapist who may be the same as raped her years before makes her emotional balance even more tenuous. Maggie and John finally find some solace in each other while trying to solve the mysteries surrounding Maggie.

I really liked Maggie and John's story, I loved the bond and Travis's role through the book, this is one of those dtory where you feel the connection from the start, but what I really loved about it was the way their relationship progressed, they were honest with each other from the beginning, they took it slow and I really felt them falling in love, I'm not one for insta-love books so to have a story that is both real and sweet was great.... the built-up with the serial rapist was amazing, it's one of my favorite things about Julie Miller's book...... I would have loved if at the end Maggie was more involved in her rescue so we could see her for the powerful woman she was...... Lokking forward for the rest of the series...

I loved this book! It was well written, had a great storyline, and smoldering romance! I might be slightly bias, since I have a thing for men in uniform, but if you share that same interest than Julie Miller's thrilling and suspenseful romance novel will not disappoint you. I will also be picking up the next installment of this great new miniseries to see what happens next with precinct four and the efforts to nail the rose red rapist!

First I'd like to say that I loved that John was a war hero and Maggie was a cop. Two very strong characters that complimented each other throughout the book. Even though there were a lot of flashbacks the story went along smoothly. But the murderer wasn't caught. Which was kind of a bummer. I know buy the next book to find out but I was still a little let down about it.
