I started the first one in this series probably 2 months ago now and haven't gotten back to it. Maybe if I pick it up again it'll hold my attention better.

I've really enjoyed the first 3 in the series (gotta get back to those!) and hope you do too!"

Thanks, Erin! I did enjoy the first book--finished it this evening after dinner--and have already started book two.

Then I got my computer back and--having been without it for two weeks--I had to jump online. Thankfully, the problem does not appear to have been the hard drive and ALL of my files (which I will be backing up over the weekend) are still here. Yay! Now I have a lot of catching up to do.

It's not for everyone. I think I love it even more because of the audiobook narrator - she is great.

I'll agree with Heidi - the narrator does an outstanding job - I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the series so much had I not first 'heard' Soulless.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I was surprised I enjoyed Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger as much as I did. It's not usually my thing, but I loved the series name (Parasol Protectorate) so I had to read it.

I know. It's ok. It's a weird reason to read a book.

I've actually set Alexia aside for a day or two because I finally got my hands on Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth .

I didn't really care all that much for DIVERGENT, but thought INSURGENT was much better.

Oddly enough, I prefered Divergent and found Tris ridiculously annoying in Insurgent. I also lost track of the story and setting a few times and had to go back and re-read - especially in the action parts.

It might be my own fault. I had really high expectations and it might've been hard for it to live up to them.

Finished the last of the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan last night. What fun adventures! I will have to see if my sister also has the "Heroes of Olympus" series.

Am now about to start Secrets to the Grave by Tami Hoag (Oak Knoll #2). More rom suspense than mystery, and definitely not cozy.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) No cozies at the moment. More hard-core stuff-- The Concrete Blonde The Concrete Blonde (Harry Bosch, #3) by Michael Connelly , One Shot One Shot (Jack Reacher, #9) by Lee Child , and 11/22/63 11/22/63 by Stephen King . I guess this last isn't really a mystery but it feels like one where I'm at in the book because he's trying to change a history that is of course very familiar to me into something unknown.

CONCRETE BLONDE is excellent and 11/22/63 is the best book I've read this year!

Hannah (hanjae) | 82 comments I've been distracted by steampunk/YA fantasies lately and thankfully have had pretty good luck with my picks so far.

Clockwork Heart by Dru Pagliassotti The Affinity Bridge (Newbury and Hobbes, #1) by George Mann My Fair Godmother (My Fair Godmother, #1) by Janette Rallison

The first one, by Dru Pagliassotti, is my favourite by a mile. Despite the cover, it's a kind of steampunkish fantasy/sci-fi set in a place called Ondinium, which is obviously partly inspired by Rome. The heroine is part of a group of metal-winged couriers called icarii - which means she can fly! I'm also reading Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder at the moment, which is quite good, and I have these lined up next:

A Spy in the House (The Agency, #1) by Y.S. Lee Airborn (Matt Cruse, #1) by Kenneth Oppel

I absolutely LOVE the Rat Pack mysteries!! Randisi nails the place & time. Sorry you don't care for them. I don't really remember a lot of cursing in these books, but language doesn't bother me. I hear far worse at work everyday!

I liked the mystery and thought it was well done. It has a bit too much gratuitous sex for me but I don't doubt it is 'realistic' to the place and time. I may try another because I like the historical value. The next two are at my public library so...

I'm about 2/3 through The Concrete Blonde and am thoroughly enjoying it although in its own way it's a time-travel exercise, because there have been so many Bosch's since.... I'm thoroughly enjoying 11/22/63 too, although I got yanked out of the story abruptly today by two anachronisms in the space of about 25 pages! Stevie, boy, where was your editor!?

Me too re language-- doesn't bother me and I hear worse. To me, letting someone else's language bother me is like ceding control over my reactions and the ability to spawn them to someone else, and I'm way too much of a control freak for that to be anywhere on the map.

No, Connelly would never be considered "cozy"! Though I tend more toward "cozies" when I read mysteries, I do also read "hardboiled". Connelly, Robert Crais, Jeff Shelby and Steve Hamilton are among my favorites in that vein.

#1 in a new series, "An Aspen Moore Novel".
I enjoyed this one very much. I esp. like the lead female character. Funny, but not outrageous. Buying Time (An Aspen Moore Novel, #1) by Kelly Cochran

I would give this a 4 star(instead of 5) for one reason. Three out of the five best/favorite characters gets killed off. For me, that is 2, too many. Bad enough when a "GOOD" guy gets murdered, but Three?I WOULD recommend the book to others.

Thanks for that spoiler there, DonnaCarol. Guess I won't be reading that one any time soon. They have this nifty html "spoiler" code that would have been appreciated by those of us who have not yet read that one. ;-)

Have started reading an older novel by Elizabeth Lowell, Eden Burning. Only about 80 pages in right now. I thought I'd be farther, but the negative and cynical attitude of the hero in this one is really irritating me.

Unless you can read my mind, knowing WHICH characters, (which I did NOT mention) and the SEX of the characters (which I did NOT mention) I said nothing that would spoil that book for anyone.Reading the reviews on the books site gives you more spoilers than my comment came close too. All I revealed was that it was MY fav. ones in the story. The book has a couple of dozen characters in it. It's a great book. Worth reading. I would not spoil it for anyone. I dont even read the backs of the books because of that very thing.

Haven't read a Nevada Barr book in some time, but wouldn't classify them as "cozy" at all. I think thriller fits them much better.
