When you're not reading a cozy....

I started the first one in this series probably 2 months ago now and haven't gotten back to it. Maybe if I pick it up again it'll hold my attention better.

I've really enjoyed the first 3 in the series (gotta get back to those!) and hope you do too!"
Thanks, Erin! I did enjoy the first book--finished it this evening after dinner--and have already started book two.
Then I got my computer back and--having been without it for two weeks--I had to jump online. Thankfully, the problem does not appear to have been the hard drive and ALL of my files (which I will be backing up over the weekend) are still here. Yay! Now I have a lot of catching up to do.

It's not for everyone. I think I love it even more because of the audiobook narrator - she is great.

I'll agree with Heidi - the narrator does an outstanding job - I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the series so much had I not first 'heard' Soulless.
I was surprised I enjoyed
as much as I did. It's not usually my thing, but I loved the series name (Parasol Protectorate) so I had to read it.I know. It's ok. It's a weird reason to read a book.
I've actually set Alexia aside for a day or two because I finally got my hands on
.

I didn't really care all that much for DIVERGENT, but thought INSURGENT was much better.
Reading
. It's different, that's for sure but I'm enjoying it. Should finish up this morning. Then . . . what to read, what to read?
I am reading
it is really very good. I will be finishing late tonight after work. Its a nail biting read for me and I love it as much as her first book.

Oddly enough, I prefered Divergent and found Tris ridiculously annoying in Insurgent. I also lost track of the story and setting a few times and had to go back and re-read - especially in the action parts.
It might be my own fault. I had really high expectations and it might've been hard for it to live up to them.
Finished the last of the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan last night. What fun adventures! I will have to see if my sister also has the "Heroes of Olympus" series.
Am now about to start Secrets to the Grave by Tami Hoag (Oak Knoll #2). More rom suspense than mystery, and definitely not cozy.

No cozies at the moment. More hard-core stuff-- The Concrete Blonde
, One Shot
, and 11/22/63
. I guess this last isn't really a mystery but it feels like one where I'm at in the book because he's trying to change a history that is of course very familiar to me into something unknown.

I've been distracted by steampunk/YA fantasies lately and thankfully have had pretty good luck with my picks so far.
The first one, by Dru Pagliassotti, is my favourite by a mile. Despite the cover, it's a kind of steampunkish fantasy/sci-fi set in a place called Ondinium, which is obviously partly inspired by Rome. The heroine is part of a group of metal-winged couriers called icarii - which means she can fly! I'm also reading
at the moment, which is quite good, and I have these lined up next:

[bookcover:My Fair ..."I love Poison Study and liked My Fair Godmother. I could not get into Airborn for some reason.
I was looking forward to reading Everybody Kills Somebody Sometime by Robert J. Randisi. It's the first in a series about the Rat Pack. It is not a cozy. It has a good mystery but the language is a bit too crude for me. Darn!! I may not read more of this series.

I don't really remember a lot of cursing in these books, but language doesn't bother me. I hear far worse at work everyday!

I'm thoroughly enjoying 11/22/63 too, although I got yanked out of the story abruptly today by two anachronisms in the space of about 25 pages! Stevie, boy, where was your editor!?

To me, letting someone else's language bother me is like ceding control over my reactions and the ability to spawn them to someone else, and I'm way too much of a control freak for that to be anywhere on the map.
Almost done with A Rogue of My Own (Reid Family #3) by Johanna Lindsey. Up next will be Let Love Find You (Reid #4).
Almost done with Phone Kitten which is a mystery but since it includes some four letter words I don't think it is a cozy but it is cute. I am about to start Seven Exes Are Eight Too Many and Surface Tension.
I'm reading The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout for a book club discussion, but I think it will be useful for my mystery writing, too. It's rather dry nonfiction, having been written by a PhD psychologist, but it's insightful in figuring out how SOME killers are made.

L.H. wrote: "...Read "Without Conscience" By Dr. Robert Hare. Also instructive."Will do! I'm putting it on my to-read list now.

Reading
and really enjoying it. Tsukiyama is a master storyteller whose books never fail to enthrall me.
Just finished
which was a GREAT hardboiled read!! If you like hardboiled mysteries, you can't go wrong with any of Bryan Gruley's Starvation Lake mysteries. Will start
this evening. Guess it's "read about Michigan" time!
FREE book from Kindle today ONLY...."BUYING TIME" by Kelly Cochran.
#1 in a new series, "An Aspen Moore Novel".
I enjoyed this one very much. I esp. like the lead female character. Funny, but not outrageous.
I am reading "The Scent of Rain and Lightning" by Nancy Pickard.
So far, I have found this book to be very good, drawing me into the characters quickly, which I like.
Reading
, the first in the Liam Campbell series and am really enjoying it. I've read a few of her Kate Shugak series and didn't really like the character that much but Liam is much more appealing.
Finished "The Scent of Rain and Lightning" by Nancy Pickard. I would give this a 4 star(instead of 5) for one reason. Three out of the five best/favorite characters gets killed off. For me, that is 2, too many. Bad enough when a "GOOD" guy gets murdered, but Three?I WOULD recommend the book to others.
Thanks for that spoiler there, DonnaCarol. Guess I won't be reading that one any time soon. They have this nifty html "spoiler" code that would have been appreciated by those of us who have not yet read that one. ;-)
Have started reading an older novel by Elizabeth Lowell, Eden Burning. Only about 80 pages in right now. I thought I'd be farther, but the negative and cynical attitude of the hero in this one is really irritating me.

All I revealed was that it was MY fav. ones in the story. The book has a couple of dozen characters in it. It's a great book. Worth reading. I would not spoil it for anyone. I dont even read the backs of the books because of that very thing.

I have a friend who considers listing the first sentence of a book to be a spoiler! I don't care if you tell me almost the whole story....if I'm interested in a book I'll read it anyway!

I am reading
so far I am liking it enough to keep reading. Its different than what I normally read but since it seems like everyone around me is reading it. I figured i may as well see what the hype is about.
I am having a summer of readingProust! Within a Budding Grove is my current read:the writing is beautiful and fluid as I expected it would be. I am also reading The Complete Poems,Wanderlust: A History of Walking(which is fascinating)andThe Bachelor Brothers' Bedside Companion(good for a chuckle as you fall asleep).
I just read Nevada Barr's Borderline. Once I start her books I can't put them down. It was a one-day read. How would you characterize her genre? Mystery of course. I don't think "cozy" but not sure. Maybe thriller? Or maybe books like hers need a whole new cagtegory?

Love Alexia! I am on the latest book right now (Timeless). This series is excellent on audiobook btw.
