Denise | 618 comments Heidi wrote in regards to Denise's post: "Wow you have been busy Denise!" I do read a lot. In January I read 14 books and so far this month I have read 4. But I can blow thorough some of the small paperbacks in less than a day. I also have a bit of an insomnia problem and I am reading until 3 or 4 a.m. every night or morning however you want to count that. I am a book addict, I admit it!

Melissa | 2 comments Hi. I'm new to the group and this site. I thought this would be a perfect thread to get started with as I love cozies and a lot of books that are not so cozy.

I'm finishing up Donna Andrews "Murder with Puffins" (a cozy) and plan to pick up a Michael Connelly book next.

I don't know why I'm at this site. I already have more books than the time to read them or the money to buy them. But, when you're an addict and you hear about a book site you just have to check it out. :-)

Kelley (booknerd69) Welcome Melissa. You have certainly come to the right spot! Everyone here is wonderful and you will get even MORE book titles to read after spending time here :) I've already reserved at least 3 new titles of books at my library based on what others have said. Be sure to check out the other threads here as well. And again, welcome :)

Welcome Melissa. I too have found way to many books on this site to read - right now I have about 32 cozy mysteries and 15 other books. When will I have the time! I love Goodreads - I had no idea about any of these great books until I found this site and read everyones remarks.

Melissa | 2 comments Thanks for the nice welcoming, ladies.
I've never been much of a library person -- at least not for fiction. I found a wonderful site where I get my books. Maybe you've heard of it: paperbackswap.com

Unfortunately, I do more buying "credits" than swapping. I sometimes have a hard time letting go of books after I've read them. I'm trying hard to let go of that bad clutter habit. :-)

You're at this site because you want the company of others who like to read as much as you! If reading lifts your spirits and takes you to a place you wouldn't otherwise visit, then bring me the books! Welcome to our little cozy reading circle!

Melissa: I will add my welcome along with everyone else's. You are not alone in wanting to keep all the books you read. For a look at what some of our group has to say about that check out the thread "Do you prefer to own your books or read library books?" I do both but for mysteries I pretty much stick with library books. When I first started reading cozies I was buying all of them but I read them so fast and I already have several thousand books in my home I finally had to put a halt to book buying at least in that genre. I try really hard to read only library books but if I am near a book store, well, I end up buying usually at least a bag full of books. I'm an addict.

Oh, and if you want even more book sites check out these threads here on Cozy Mysteries:

Book websites
Cozy blogs/book blogs
Author Websites

Happy reading, and again welcome.

Kelley (booknerd69) Just started reading At Home on Ladybug Farm by Donna Ball. Only a chapter into it, but I am hoping it's as enjoyable as the first in the series. I am mostly intrigued with the character of Noah and want to see where he led in the story. Hopefully the ladies won't have quite as many problems this go around.

Also, I reserved The Help by Kathryn Stockett at my library and am 237th in line to get it! I might have to find that one at half-price books :)

Oh Kelley your are 237th!!!! You must live in a large area! I feel bad for you. I read it and am going to buy it because I loved it so much (which I never do). I would just buy it on Amazon - it is around $9.00 there. Otherwise if you are a Sams Club member I saw it there for $13.00 this weekend. It is worth it.

Thanks Heidi. I don't belong to Sam's Club, but I do to Costco, so I can always check there. Yes, I do live in a large city, that happens to love reading a lot :) I live in Austin, Texas, and there are a lot of readers here!

Kelley: I recently read "At Home..." and I didn't like it quite as well as "A Year..." but it was still very good. Noah is a big part of the story line, I won't say more until you have finished the book.

I read that awhile back and also loved it. I was thinking of reading another one of hers. Have you read any others?

message 215: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Amber Elise, Donna Ball has written a mystery series about Rescue Dogs.Smoky Mountain Tracks is the first in the series. But, I believe there are only 3 in the series and I have no idea if she has plans to continue it. I read them all and enjoyed them.

Amber Elise: No, I have only read the two Ladybug Farm books. Besides the series that Kelley mentions in message 235, Donna Ball also writes under these pseudonyms:

Rebecca Flanders
Donna Carlisle
Leigh Bristol
Taylor Brady
Donna Boyd

I have not taken the time to look up the books she has written under each name and have not read any that I can remember under any of those names.

Denise | 618 comments The next three books of my library checkouts that can't be renewed (so they move to the top of my TBR Right Now list) are:

Marketing with E-Mail

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling

and

Mary Baker Eddy, Speaking for Herself

Looks like it will be awhile before I get to read another cozy!

The thing that really sucks is none of these can be renewed and they all come due on the same day. (March 3) I have 10 books due on that day but as of right now the other 7 can be renewed but of course that can change. I have such a bad habit of putting about 20 books on reserve and then they come in all at once. I have seven ready for pickup right now.

Denise, I tend to do the same thing with reserves. But, here in Austin, we can only reserve 10 books at a time. And I don't read non-fiction as a rule, so my life is full of cozy mysteries, general mysteries and on occasion, a romance :) I do read autobiographies time to time, but that is about it. My husband is the non-fiction reader in the family! Right now I am kind of wanting to read some classics though! Jane Austen is calling my name... :)

Susan and Kelley: I'm so glad to meet kindred spirits through Goodreads. Susan, I am in the process of buying a house in Phoenix and I will be packing up my 10,000 books or so (I don't even know how many I have) and Kelley, Phoenix only let's you put 3 books on reserve (so my daughter tells me). I don't know how I'm going to handle that! I try to limit the number of books I put on reserve but I'll see a book review or someone mentions a book here on Goodreads and I put the book on reserve. I don't put every book I want to read on reserve--some I write on a piece of paper and put it on my TBR someday stack to order (I probably have 1,000 book titles there) and then there are my two notebooks of authors and books that I have read/series I have read/am reading...

message 225: by Susan (new)

Susan Denise, wow thats alot of books! You make me feel so much better and I'll try and remember that as my huband and I carry all the totes up to our second story apartment we will be bringing them to tomorrow.....if you were married to my husband with all those books you would be getting divorced hahahaha. He threatens to have a huge bon fire with my books every time we have to move!!! I have a HUGE TBR list too. I hope to live to be 115 so I can read them all.

message 226: by Denise (new)

Denise | 618 comments I finished Marketing With E-Mail: A Spam-Free Guide to Increasing Sales, Building Loyalty, and Increasing Awareness. Was quite a bit dated. I think for books dealing with computers or internet it is probably best to read something that is no more than 2 years old. This book was 10 years old. Much too dated to be of much help.

I decided to send Mary Baker Eddy, Speaking for Herself back to the library without reading it. I started the first few pages and just decided I wasn't in the mood for this book at this time.

I read not quite half of Where Did You Go? Out. What Did You Do? Nothing.. It was very repetitive and although cute I decided I had other things to read that I would like better. So back to the library with this one too.

Kept Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling and will be reading that along with Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi book The Time of My Life. I will be sure to have the kleenex handy while reading it.

Denise | 618 comments Picked up more books from the library that were on my reserve list. The Things That Keep Us Here was in. This is a first book for a new author from here in Ohio. One thing I can say about getting books from the library, you have to be flexible. I had my next two books that I was planning on reading (see message 247 above) and then The Things That Keep Us Here only has a 14 day loan. So of course I am reading it first. I can say it is a very good read. I had to take a break because it is getting so intense. I am on page 294 (it is 404 pages). It is the story (fictional) of a flu pandemic worse than the one in 1918 that killed 50-100 million people.

Denise you sure do read a lot of different kinds of books!

message 231: by Denise (new)

Denise | 618 comments Everybody: I know it isn't a mystery but I would recommend to everybody the book The Things That Keep Us Here. OMG it is so good. I just got it yesterday (see message 250). I started reading it yesterday, finished it before I went to sleep. There were some parts that had me literally on the edge of my chair. This is a first book by Carla Buckley. I can't wait to see what she writes next.

Now I am reading The Time of My Life by Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi. I loved some of his movies, Dirty Dancing especially (of course--he was so hot!). Although most people don't list it when talking about his "good" movies, I really liked Roadhouse. It could be because it had Sam Elliott in it along with Swayze. I love Sam Elliott (Sam has my vote for sexiest man alive).

The group is "Young Adult Fiction for Adults" - I don't know if you can see my profile, but if you can it should be listed under my groups :) p.s. there are a ton of good YA books out there right now.

Denise | 618 comments I just finished The Time of My Life, Patrick Swayze's autobiography. I thought it was very good, I felt like I was listening to Patrick talking. It has a very natural flow to it.

I really need to get to Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling. I have had that in my "currently reading" for quite a while--I have read two other books and have barely started on this one.

I also had to pull Best Career And Education Web Sites: A Quick Guide to Online Job Search and put in my TBR Right Now pile as it can't be renewed. I know some people think I read the oddest books--this one is a quick guide to online job search. The reason I am going to read this one is because I am an executive recruiter (that's what I do for a living) and the other book is to help me in client development.

I am also getting ready to read The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. On my cozy website that I always use this book isn't listed. Although I haven't read it yet the blurb on the back cover sounds like it is a cozy. Where would everyone classify it?

Denise, I am not sure what The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie would be classified as, but I am currently reading it as well. It's a bit of a throwback in the writing style and the also the fact it is set in 1950. I think it is probably a cozy based on what I have read so far.

Denise | 618 comments I am 148 pages into While My Sister Sleeps by Barbara Delinsky. This is a new author for me and I will definitely read more of her work. You see this story unfold through the eyes of the younger sister who always comes in second to everything her older sister does at least to their mother. The older sister is a runner and has hopes for the Olympics. One day as she is training she has a massive heart attack and someone comes along and performs CPR and calls 911 for assistance. The younger sister always goes with her sister when she is training but her sister had changed the time that day and the younger sister was tired of always changing her plans and said she couldn't go so of course she feels guilty and her mother also blames her for not being there with her sister. The sister is in a deep coma and tests suggest that she has major brain damage. This is an extremely intense book and definitely looks like a Goodread.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater by Maggie Stiefvater last night and it is the best book I've read so far this year. I can't remember the last time a book made me cry, but this one did. It's a YA fantasy. Very interesting take on werewolves. If you enjoy YA fantasy, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
