Beth | 616 comments I just finished Cutting for Stone, which was a phenomenal read, even though it's not a mystery, but a family saga. The author is a doctor, so there are a lot of medical situations in the book, and the India/Ethiopia/US settings are very interesting. I learned a lot!

Finished reading Christmas in Calico by Jack Curtis at 1:30 this morning. Pretty good book. Slept surprisingly well afer--didn't even hear Godzilla and Bigfoot leave upstairs this morning (and they are never quiet). Now starting Mrs. Miracle by Debbie Macomber. Will watch the movie after.

I just started it too. I really thought it was going to be awful, but it's really a cut above most of the Hunger Games knockoff books.

I also started Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie, and The Shining. All are really great. Plus I have another 10 or so books going.

Karen M | 1436 comments Just downloaded from the digital library The Paris Wife. I just knew this would happen, LOL. Books I've been waiting on for over a month are all becoming available now. Guess I just need to read faster.

I really enjoyed Ready Player One on audio.

Linda Klinedinst (linda_klinedinst) | 113 comments I just finished reading "An Engagement in Seattle" by Debbie Macomber.

Now I am reading "16 Lighthouse Road" by Debbie Macomber. This is Book #1 in the Cedar Cove Series. I am going to read them in order. This is from my own home Library.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I found Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu to be a stellar read! Gave it 5 stars!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson . It was a good, fair and balanced portrayal of a visionary's life. 4 stars. But I must admit I would have enjoyed it more had I not known the ending.

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) | 21 comments Glad to hear that people are enjoying Steve Jobs' bio. I asked for it for Christmas, and I hope I get it!
I'm reading I'll Sleep When I'm Dead The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon by Crystal Zevon
Another great bio, with a tough ending...:(

I read the Warren Zevon book a few years ago when it first came out. One of the best rock bios I've read about a very complex man.

message 2113: by Anne (new)

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) | 21 comments What amazes me is that he personally asked his ex-wife to write it, and not leave anything out. Since you've read the book, you know how brave that was. Some of the stuff is hard to read, but it's by far one of the most honest bios I've read.
Yes, he was complex, and brilliant, and taken way too soon.
As you can tell, I carry a torch for him, big time.

Will be starting Gone to Green by Judy Christie later today.

I was always a fan of his, too. I remember reading articles through the years that made it plain that for a long time he wasn't a very nice person, but that never detracted from his appeal for me. I always thought it was kind of ironic that after all the years of self-abuse and what seemed like a death wish, God, the fates, or whatever your beliefs, caught up with him when he seemed to have finally figured it out.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Just finished Swan Peak Swan Peak (Dave Robicheaux, #17) by James Lee Burke . Good book but a weirdness-- in every single other book with this protagonist he's mentioned his family-- his first wife, his second wife, and his daughter all figure prominently, if only in memory in some cases. He doesn't mention them at all, not even once, in this book. Now-- I'm about five books behind in this series (and this is the sixth book I was behind so yeah, I read it way out of order) but I'm now dying to get caught up to see what could so completely have changed!

message 2121: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments Finished The Paris Wife which was very good. I'm trying to get through In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin but it's slow going. I've also managed to start a rather depressing book, One Imperfect Christmas as if the other one wasn't bad enough.

message 2125: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments Finally back to Christmas themed books. I will be starting The Christmas Dog today. I'm also about half done with the most depressing Christmas book One Imperfect Christmas. Both of these are a bit preachy but hey it's the season.

I started reading a history of the War of 1812 - research for a possible MS. Do you realize that's almost 100 years ago? Where's the big hoopla?

message 2129: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 I am reading Christmas themed books only at the moment - so have The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder - not a who dunnit the mystery of the nativity. Also reading 1225 Christmas Tree Lane byDebbie Macomber which is a cosy romance.

I actually liked One Imperfect Christmas. Life is not always fun and games. I kinda skim over the preachy stuff :) Happy Holidays!

Karen M | 1436 comments Continuing with my Christmas theme:

An Irish Christmas and Christmas at Harrington's both by Melody Carlson. Enjoyed The Christmas Dog also by the same author (free downloads all) and all Christian but mildly so.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Sorry I didn't mean cosy as in mystery - but cosy as in feel good - should have used a different word :)

message 2135: by Donna (new)

message 2136: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 I am reading a mystery at the moment - not a cosy but not 'hard core' either - it is Dead Cold (aka A Fatal Grace) by Louise Penny.

I am also reading a book set in WW1 that looks at loyalties in times of war - Traitor by Stephen Daisley

Ariel (sevenmoonlight) | 138 comments I got Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews for the holiday and devoured it in 24 hours, so I just had to get the fifth in the series Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews Magic Slays. Now I am all caught in in the series and can't wait for the next book. I have tried other urban fantasy and didn't care too much for them, but this series just has a grip on me.

Very fun series :)

Kate Carlisle (katecarlisle) | 28 comments I just started reading Benjamin Franklin: An American Life. This is the author of the Steve Jobs biography everyone's talking about. He wrote the Benjamin Franklin one, an Albert Einstein one, and the Steve Jobs one. I decided to read them all in the order in which the men lived.

message 2144: by Beth (new)

Beth | 616 comments I'm well into The Past Came Hunting by my friend, Donnell Bell. It's her first published book, and one I've been waiting for for a looong time. It's a suspense, not a mystery, because you know who the killer is near the beginning. But, you worry about what he's going to do for the rest of the book. It's a gripping read, and even if it wasn't written by a friend, I would highly recommend it. ;-)
