Wow, there are so many recommendations I want to second! But I will limit myself to The Phantom of the Opera since I haven't read it and it keeps with the October-Halloween theme I try to do each year :)
Lots of great nominations. I've recently just finished Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Haunting of Hill House. All were fun reads.I second Something Wicked This Way Comes and nominate The Exorcist.
Fingers crossed for Rebecca. It’s one of my favorites and it’s been years since I’ve read it. Can’t we all go to Manderlay?
Rebecca or the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I have already read Utopia and the Prince (both were very good). I have tried Dracula three times and always give up
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.Loved the quote about Mr Utterson thinking he was Mr Seek and and he had to find Mr Hyde.

Jekyll & Hyde is a novella. Not a short story. Plenty long enough for a group read. Some of the epics ppl have nominated seem, to me, to be overwhelming.
Well, just as a reminder, there is no restriction at all to nominating novellas or short stories. We've nominated them before. Including Jekyll & Hyde. :-)

Which ones do you mean? We don't want to vote in another 1000 book, without most people knowing it.
edit = I don't see any really big books. The Idiot is probably the most challenging. Otherwise this list has many more YA, MS and HS books than usual. Even the lofty sounding books are quite short.
I’m voting for ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and ‘Something Wicked this Way Comes’. Both have been on my list for way too long!
I will second Something Wicked This Way comes and Dr JeThe Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeckly
I also second The Haunting of Hill House and/or Dracula. I have to say Rebecca is a favorite of mine but I've read it so many times already 😊
Wow, I liked this suggestion, Mary! It's a book I didn't know, and a work out of the English language literature as well. However, I can't read 1144 pages in a month. :-) But I changed my mind and I'm seconding it anyway! :-) And I've added it to my list. Thanks for nominating such an interesting work!
Mary wrote: "I nominate Kristin Lavransdatter"It's been on my list in the past and still looks interesting. It's also an omnibus of a trilogy... maybe we could read the first third? I'd second that...
Helen wrote: "The prince"Loved this book thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a hard read, great insight into how power corrupts the many.
