Exactly, none of the other characters are explored. Read this book immediately after I had finished IT by Stephen King. Two ends of the spectrum, I feel. While King spends so much time developing his characters and detailing the sub plots, this one just skips everything and everyone.

Thank you for the suggestion. Replay goes to my TBR. Looks interesting.

@Raviarun, I totally agree about Stephen King. He is one of my favourite authors .

Sulaiman Taji (sulaimantaji) | 10 comments Replay has been in my list for quite some time now.
The problem is, it's quite costly on Amazon.

Jhankar | 209 comments Finished. 3-3.5 stars, maybe. Reminded me of One by Richard Bach, which I prefer over this one. Definitely going to add Replay to my TBR.

Makrand | 1353 comments Finished it now.

Absolutely Genius!!
I find it extremely hard to pen down what i exactly felt after completing this!
So i'm gonna try.

The Plot is a killer i think. It definitely takes a lot of intelligence, courage and good friends to write correct science fiction so that there aren't loopholes in it that the readers don't crib about. Blake has nailed it in perfect sense.

Bringing life to characters, to Jason, his thoughts so marvellously depicted. Exactly what a person would do in times of peril, nothing out of box, it seemed perfectly natural and convincing!!

The plot surely gave me a couple sleepless nights and it was worth it!

Absolutely freaking fantastic read, loved it!

Jhankar | 209 comments Oh and on a side note, I'm very interested in knowing what becomes of Amanda.

Thank you Swathi.
Same for me, left me completely spellbound & searching for more about the book

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Yeah me too. Now I want to look for similar books. :)

Makrand | 1353 comments Incase you haven't bumped into these ones, the following books seem more or less in the same area

1. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
2. Replay - This is a suggestion from Bicky i guess from the same thread

i might start one of these shortly!

Jhankar | 209 comments The Time Traveller's Wife isn't really on the same premise. But it's a brilliant book nevertheless.

message 64: by Vani (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vani Bhoopathy (vanibhoopathy) | 4 comments I absolutely loved this book. Read it a year back, and as a sci-fi time travel nut, who usually enjoys only crime thrillers, this book sucked me in from the get-go. Any glaring leaps of logic I had to take was substantiated with a reasoning, however flimsy it might be. So overall, logically, the book held up for me!

I went on a reading dry spell for a couple of years, and this kinda kickstarted it again for me.

I've very successfully converted many non-readers into readers with this book. The plot isn't out of the world and quite done as mentioned. But the narrative reads like a movie, where even a novice reader is sucked in and can feel the plot playing out in their head. I've had friends come back and ask for other books which bring me honest joy.

So this book will forever be an 11/10 for me. :)

Read a few of his books and he is a current favorite of mine too. plenty of his books are already next in my TBR.

Niveditha Ravindra (nivedithar) | 155 comments Nice to see so many people reading this book and discussing here. Many a time, the BOTM thread is quite dull.

message 67: by G (new) - rated it 5 stars

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments I don't get the comparison with King. Different storytellers different styles. King is a very leisurely storyteller, but Dark Matter is a fast paced book. As far as the bit about rich characters go, if Stephen King's characters were to share a stage with characters by other writers, let's say Dostoevsky, they would appear like Harlequins standing next to Sopranos & Prima Donnas. But that doesn't make Stephen King a bad writer. He is fantastic. (Although some of his resolutions make me want to barf: like 'It'. And some seem like cop-outs: like 'Christine'.)

I never intended to compare the authors. As I said, I picked this book immediately after reading IT which led to my comparison of the books.
If you think I made a mistake I wouldn't mind deleting my comments.

Richa Sahu | 25 comments I am gonna start the book now...Hopefully not too late :(

Yes. Character developments were laughable, but somehow it did not dampen the effect for me. Also this book reminded me of this obscure show called "Counterpart" which stars the guy from Whiplash, I watched a couple of episodes few months back. The plot is a bit similar, especially the lead character being underachieving in one world and accomplished in another. Wonder what became of it!

I haven't read any of the latest King books tbh. Mostly because I cannot bring myself to read more than one Stephen King per year. The last couple years have been spent reading The Dark Tower series. I am done with five I think. But I get where you are coming from. I DNFed Doctor Sleep. And Mr. Mercedes was okayish.

His newer books, at least the ones that I have read, are nowhere close to his earlier books. The quality of storytelling in The Stand, The Shining, It, and Carrie is far superior than storytelling in his works in the past fifteen-twenty years.

Makrand | 1353 comments It's been 2-4 days since i finished Dark Matter and life is ruined now for me since i am looking for something which is equally impressive/matching with DM's standards and somehow i am failing to start a new book !

Recommendations needed!

I found Mr. Mercedes to be so mediocre that I was astonished. The writer who had such a good ear for dialogue was nowhere present and the plot was boring.

I'm not much into Non-fiction reads yet i'd love to read if you can recommend. I've been reading Steve Jobs for a 4-5 months, LOL unable to finish it :(

Richa Sahu | 25 comments try 'walking the nile' It is not a biography and writing is good. Levison Wood walks the complete length of Nile thus passing through 6 countries, many of them just coming out of violent uprisings or face the grim possibility of being plunged into one. I think you will like it.

If you are a movie buff and into all things pop-culture like me, I'd recommend "The Disaster Artist", it is hard not to like the eccentric Tommy Wiseau, also it is not terribly dry or tedious for a non-fiction. "Born a Crime" has rave reviews too,it is next on my TBR.

Were you referring to this? The Disaster Artist
by Greg Sestero, Tom Bissell?

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah seems to connect. Added to my TBR !

Try Haruki Murakami's short stories. They always seem to work for me when I'm in a book hangover. You can pick Desire: Vintage Minis or you can pick Agatha Christie. Try And Then There Were None or Murder on the Orient Express if you havent read them already.

I've been meaning to read Haruki Murakami's books since long guess now's a perfect time.
I checked the synopsis for all of the 3 books you listed and they seem WOW! Very Intriguing!

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments And then there were none is aces. Among the newer books, Unsub by Meg Gardiner is a kickass mystery thriller. Another one that I want to recommend but may not work is 'The Wife Between Us'. This one takes some 60-70 pages to build up. After the build up though, the book is kickass.

@G... Have added Unsub and the Wife between us to my soon-TBR pile.

'The Wife Between Us' sounds interesting, added to my TBR. Unsub has been on my TBR for a while now, but I doubt I will be picking up anytime soon. Already disturbed enough by my current read "I'll be gone in the dark".

Richa Sahu | 25 comments I literally gobelled the book up in two days...it was awesome . Though the concept a bit too far fetched but really we all agree that's why we read fiction 😁 would post a review tonight !!
