Elke (elkeo) Would anyone be interested in a buddyread of No Surrender to celebrate the suffragettes getting women the vote?
We don't need to get political, just appreciate the struggle and our ability to vote.

No Surrender

Elke, I read this a couple of years ago for our centenary. I wouldn't be up for it again, however, for anyone interested, Persephone Books website provides a link to a free copy that you can read online. (I'll put a link in later when I'm on the computer.

Fantastic!

Karen- is there a thread for buddyreads? or can you set one up for No Surrender and we can see if others would like to join?

There’s already a thread for No Surrender here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/.... So maybe we can add our comments/thoughts there. Looks like it is available for free if anyone else is interested.

Any suggestions for book choices for this coming Nov/Dec ?
Thanks Karen and Gina xx

My still unread ones are

Princes in the Land
The Far Cry
Wilfred and Eileen and
Saplings

I can get hold of A House in the Country suggested by Elke, which I'd love to read, and I haven't put an order in to Persephone books at all this year, so I feel quite justified in ordering another 3 if necessary, : )

message 120: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments I’ve got a few Persephone’s pending and think Effi Briest or The Exiles Return might be good for future group reads. But an excuse for a Persephone order is always welcome ;).

message 121: by Karen (last edited Oct 13, 2020 10:03AM) (new)

Karen (karenlibrarian13) | 26 comments I have several unread Persephones:

The Godwits Fly
The Happy Tree
Long Live Great Bardfield
Maman, What Are We Called Now?
A Very Great Persephone

I also have a copy of An Interrupted Life from the library I was planning to read soon. I was also thinking about re-reading A London Child of the 1870s as I want to read the next two in the series.

If anyone is interested, I would love a group or buddy read. Thanks!

Hi Karen, we did read A London Child of the 1870s with the group in August, here's the 'starting' thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... I'm sure it's fairly fresh in our minds if you want to discuss.

I'd like to read The Happy Tree which I can get from the library; any of the others I'd have have to buy, but happy to do so if there is interest in these.

Susan | 236 comments Hi, Karen, The group did a read of Long Live Great Bardfield recently, too, in January of this year. The starting thread is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
All the threads remain open for comments/thoughts. As always, all Persephones sound tempting to read ;)

message 124: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne I like the sound of 'The Happy Tree', I gave up on 'Great Bardfield' the writing style didn't work for me, and I abandoned 'The Godwits Fly' which had a kind of sub-Katherine Mansfield feel which should have worked - I love Mansfield - but the writer just didn't seem to have her skill or her powers of observation. But obviously likes/dislikes are as much about personal taste or whether something raises positive associations and so many unpredictable things, as anything else!

message 125: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne Was wondering if anything was decided about next month's read?

Thanks Karen. I'll reread Marianne if Dec is not too hectic. Look forward to Princes in the Land.

message 129: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne I wouldn't mind rereading 'Mariana' one of my favourite Persephone titles, I'll try to join 'Princes in the Land' but depends on my other commitments, looks interesting though...

message 145: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne Thanks Tania, I've read the Emma Smith but found it very disappointing, I thought her memoirs were much better, but found the Streatfeild pretty compelling. And the others all look really promising.

message 146: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 90 comments HI everyone :O)
Hope you’re all safe.

Regarding future reads, I’ll pretty much go with what the majority wants, especially since I have been very bad indeed at actually reading the books chosen. I blame Real Life... Anyway :O)

Of the titles Tania listed, I have The Far Cry, Tory Heaven, Wilfred and Eileen, and Saplings. Tempted by the Wilkie Collins one too.

message 147: by Tania (new)

Tania | 563 comments Mod
Excellent. Tory Heaven sounds particularly good.

I'd happily buy something else if the group has other suggestions; any excuse 😅
