Huh. Not ONCE did it occur to me that Roland might not have planned for Hugh (view spoiler)
Through chapter 6 - I'm liking this so far - I really wasn't sure about this book because I wasn't sure if I could get behind Hugh as a main character, but so far so good. Although I wasn't TOO worried because I love all of the Ilona Andrews books.(view spoiler)
Started this morning. I'm through Chapter 2. Not sure if it's just me, or if the authors are trying to give this impression, but I find I'm thinking of Hugh as a drug addict. He was hooked as a child, his drug was Roland, and drinking was his withdrawal. So viewing all his actions in the past through the filter of "addict", I find that I can maybe forgive him.
That's interesting Laura. It may have something to do with "filling the void" which is mentioned quite a few times.
I've been really busy so have read little over the past week or so. Just started this today and am 13% in. So far it's okay. The prologue of how they met was interesting (Roland), right now so much is still setting up. I just met the "girl", already I'm forgetting her name and (view spoiler)

He seems like a very different character through this book.
Finished! Can I just say I love this book? And I think I love it a little bit more knowing it all started as an April Fools Day joke by the authors. :)
Diane ~Firefly~ wrote: "ch 1 -2I want to say poor Hugh, but I still think of him as a villain. I wonder how long before that perspective changes? I am interested in his new horse, Bucky, since he was glowing.
"
Could he be a unicorn in disguise?
Diane ~Firefly~ wrote: "ch 4 - 6 ..."I don't think we can take anything Hugh did/said in previous books at face value. Everything we know has come through the filter of Kate's POV. (view spoiler)

Hugh It must have been wonderful to have Roland ease his mind with the things he did for him...."
I hadn't thought about that with Hugh. Maybe a nephew?
I finished tonight - it was such a good book. I never would have guessed that I'd like Hugh as a main character. I loved the banter between him and Elara.(view spoiler)
30% in. I'm fascinated by Elara's powers and wonder what secrets she may have. I like the character and the book has thankfully gotten better.
Finished! It got much better and I love the pair. So happy to hear there will be two more books. I liked

Poor cows though!

I was thinking how much brainwashing had an effect, especially when the conditioning started as a child that even when Hugh disagreed, he never voiced it.
I am Chapter 7 and I think it is interesting so far. I like the banter but so far the plot is only now really starting with the (view spoiler).

They also messed with the Kentucky geography on top of moving the castle.
Finished. That was lots of fun. Still, light on the plot but had to introduce lots of characters. it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. (view spoiler)

I loved the elephant scene too. I'm currently rereading the series. Not sure if I should have waited to read this one until I finished all prior books. I loved it!!! (view spoiler)

The only thing I can think of is the amount of energy it needs for her to use it.
So, Steven and Ora... did you think Hugh had to be redeemed or did you already have a soft spot for his bada**ness, like I did?
Umm, i have a thing for bad boys, so I already liked his character, but I still wanted/needed to see some redemption for sure.
Yeah, the Andrews did a good job explaining some of his previous actions without toning down the edginess. It's going to be really explosive when Kate and Curran confront the new look Hugh in Magic Triumphs. Can't wait!

Steven wrote: "I got an ARC (squeeeee!!!) and can’t wait to start tomorrow"Ooh, lucky duck. I've pre-ordered but it's expensive on kindle.

Ok, SPOILERS, don't read it if you haven't read Magic Binds and Iron and Magic.
(view spoiler)[I always wondered why Roland wanted Hugh, as well. He basically saw an orphan on the streets talented in healing and thought: "He'll make an excellent warlord!" I don't get it.
At this point I think he might be Erra's son. It would explain the blood magic. And it's going to be interesting since they'll both appear in Magic Triumphs.
I never seriously thought he could be Roland's son, because Roland has always been so reluctant to have kids. But then again maybe he is, and he did things different with Hugh (abandoning him instead of raising him) hoping that he'll turn up different than the others..? (hide spoiler)]
