Finished Great Hunt and here are my thoughts:

(view spoiler)[ I will start with my favorite Nynaeve, she should be angry at more occasions as her anger really does the trick every time. Everyone says Egwene is quite powerful, hope we i to see her soon doing something useful with her powers. As for now, her bickering over Rand just irritates me.

Rand and Min? i was really surprised as Min didn't see herself with him when she saw his future in book 1. but she also said there would be another one... Hope he soon meet his match and stays loyal as him thinking about every girl he meets and then all the guilt he feel thinking about Egwene after, it is just so annoying.

Rand should not trust people so easily. He trusted Selene and look what that got him. Same goes for Integar but that was also one of the most shocking moment of the book for me.

I liked Rand in this book way better than first one in spite of all his shortcomings. I liked the parts where his internal struggle was shown. to use power and then be afraid of getting mad, it was done beautifully and not overdone.

I agree, this is the first time that i have read sword fight describes in this manner. Something like this is done in WoK and WoR but there only postures were mentioned. Here it was very creative. Hope we'll see more of this in coming books. (hide spoiler)]

Not necessarily an LOL moment, but I always smile when Rand, Mat, and Perrin are together. I love the part in Chapter 11 of the Great Hunt when (view spoiler)[ Mat finds out that Rand can channel and he's like, "No offense Rand, but I think I will just sleep as far away from you as I can..." and then he just keeps talking! Everybody's got that friend, the one who starts a convo with "don't mean to be rude but..." I love to see that dynamic here in an epic fantasy. (hide spoiler)] It makes them feel real.

(view spoiler)[ I can't stand Nynaeve or Mat. . . I won't go into too much detail because I don't know where you guys and gals are but they are really, really annoying to me. Nynaeve started to get better, then BAM one paragraph ruined her again for me. Mat has been consistently bad. I think he has potential though (maybe). I do like how Nynaeve is restricted from the One Power and has to be mad to use it. I really hate how she thinks she is above Ewgene and Elayne. They are on the same level! Anyways, rant over lol

Favorite characters for the moment are as follows:
1.) Egwene - Badass, I love her
2.) Loial - Not a lot dialogue but I would love to hang out with him
3.) Rand - Main character love (especially in Shadow Rising)
4.) Perrin - Love his ability and his inner battle that is going on (hide spoiler)]

Basically Jordan has a really twisted view of boys and girls.. I mean I can't really imagine a guy like Perrin who understands little about what the women think about and I can't imagine a Nyneave in really life either..

His role will improve, a lot. More than Perrin's in my opinion. I always felt that Perrin is the weaker of the 3, but again that's only my opinion. Like you said after the Raven Spear, and overwhelming memories I hope you'll like him from now on too :)

Also his love angle was better/more interesting than Rand and Perrin's too that I remember of. Perrin and Faile felt weird on my first time, felt weird now. I don't want to talk about Rand and his harem too lol. By the way, I wonder given that you are a bit more into the 4th book, did you discover the 3rd person Rand's gonna attach to yet? Another book down, ten to go. Read four books and I am not even halfway through the series. Kind of discouraging lol good thing they have been great reads. This one for me was no different.

The last 15% was pretty epic. Some of it was a little predictable but still awesome.

I must say I felt a little underwhelmed with what went down in Tanchino. I thought the black ajah would have a larger role in what happened. The action was good between Nynaeve and the forsaken but odd. I just didn't like how Nynaeve was as strong as the forsaken. Maybe it is because I'm not a fan of her character but it was odd. When they brought in the collar that could hold Rand I thought it was a really cool addition to everything. I thought about in the books before with the Seachan, that why don't they just use one of those on Rand? Guess they have gender restrictions which makes sense because they use different areas of the One Power. I wonder what happened to the forsaken that Nynaeve had a hold of? On a side note, Nynaeve got better towards the end.

The Two Rivers POV with Perrin and Faile was great throughout the whole book! Possibly my favorite parts came from them. Glad it worked out the way it did for them, getting married and all that. I got married at a young ripe age of 21 so I can relate to how it all went down. Luc was a character I didn't like from the get-go. I figured he would turn out to be Slayer. The whitecloaks were especially annoying throughout the POV. I thought they would have a change of heart at the end but I misjudged the hate the leader had for Perrin. Which is complete crap lol Along with the black ajah, I thought that Fain would have more of an appearance.

Egwene and Moiraine didn't have much of a place in this one. They just followed Rand around. I could throw Mat into this category as well. But he found the Raven Spear, which I think we could see more of later.

Rand obviously played a pretty large role in this one, which was expected due to his lack of face time in the last one. I liked how he has taken his fate into his own hands and not allowing to be influenced. At times he was a little stubborn but I think it worked out. The ending was a little confusing but not bad. The part with the Aiel was kind of drawn out but I think it was necessary to build Rand's past as a character. Hopefully, the Aiel that split won't be too much of an issue. Looking forward to seeing how Rand progresses now that he has a teacher.

Can't wait to see more from Lanfear. I like her storyline a lot. I like how, in this book, you got to see her manipulation on the other forsaken. Will be cool to see going forward.

I must say that I really enjoy how the prophecies are done in the books! All of the people have their own interpretations and they are all pretty close but when it happens it works really well.

All in all, this was another great one.

I have heard other people say the same thing about Mat in the later books. Hopefully, you all are right.

I think Faile and Perrin are a really good duo in the book. They compliment each other really well. Faile is the outgoing and Perrin is the soft-spoken one. At first, I thought she was going to turn out bad (I can't trust anyone) but I like her. You definitely couldn't "erase" her character. Without her, you wouldn't have the same Perrin.

I forgot to mention Siuan and Leana. I agree, that scene was really sad. But Siuan handled it really well considering all things. Looking forward to how her character shifts in power. Oh yea, F Elaida...

I think I'm caught up on the discussion.... I'm still plugging away at the Great Hunt. Currently in the middle of chapter 32.

During my initial read of the series, I didn't care for Mat that much. I thought he was worse than a whiner...he really was a woolhead. My opinion changed though and by the end of the series he was one of my favorites. During this re-read of the Great Hunt, I noticed some hints dropped about why Mat hates Aes Sedai so much. Its super freaking subtle.

Nynaeve is my favorite character but there are times when Jordan doesn't write her well. I think once you get to the Brandon Sanderson installments you will like her a lot more. She's a complex person, and the weird male/female vibes in Jordan's writing don't do her justice. She gets accused of being crabby and/or thinking she's above everyone. She is better than Elyane IMO, but that's another post for another day.

I'd argue her flaws are her way of hiding the fact that she cares for those men so much but she doesn't want to be vulnerable because she's either been hurt or is afraid of being hurt again. In Book One (view spoiler)[ (1) We learn she was close with her dad and he taught her all she knew but now he's dead. (2) Her relationship with Rand is similar to that of an older sister. It is mentioned she changed his diapers. Now he's in danger...she cares enough to follow him and try and get him safe...but there's a chance she'll fail and I don't know if she can live with herself if she does. (3) She confesses her love to Lan and he rejects her. So she learns that being honest about matters of the heart doesn't really get you anywhere. Time to throw a tantrum? (hide spoiler)]

Does she have a temper? Yep. I love it, although I'm prone to slamming doors until the house rattles on occasion!

I will say that I started the series with Lan and Perrin as my favorites while disliking Mat and Nyneave. By the end Mat and Nyneave are my favorites.

I liked both far more on my reread as a result.

Soooo it seems like something happens toward the end with Nynaeve and Mat. Something big enough to change people's minds. Guess I'll have to read and see. I definitely wouldn't stop reading the series just because they didn't like one character though lol that is a little silly if you ask me.

Is it an event or is it how Sanderson writes them as characters? I could see how Sanderson's writing could save Nynaeve and Mat. I could agree that Jordan doesn't write them well. Or does he write them for readers to be annoyed by them and to love them later on?

But your thoughts on Nynaeve made me think of how she acts. It does make sense where he anger and actions come from. She wasn't a bad character for me until after she got to the tower. She said annoying things sometimes but I liked her. What got me was how she treats people around her. It was fine when we were still in Two Rivers and she was the Wisdom where she took care of the kids and families. She isn't that person anymore and characters have said that too. I thought that after they got to the White Tower she would cool with all that but it didn't. Didn't help that she went straight to Accepted when Egwene had to be a novice. I am waiting for the scene were Egwene snaps on her. Sure, Lan rejected her but has since shown his love for her. I don't think that is an excuse. Another thing I don't understand is her hate for Aes Sedai. I hope she gets better, I don't like having characters I don't like in the "good guy" group. You make a good argument for her, a really good one.

Ivy, your comments on Mat's hate toward Aes Sedai also have me thinking! I definitely missed them. This has been a large part of why I don't him. He doesn't give much reasoning behind why he hates them. I assumed it is just from the stories he heard and how Moiraine didn't tell them anything in the beginning. He also stated after he was taken to Tar Valon to be rid of the blade that was killing him, that he hated them for leaving his mind without memories. . . Kind of messed up since they saved him. Do you have any reasons I missed from the beginning?

In reply to my "potential" comments - Mat has potential because of his ties to Rand, same with Perrin, and that to me can go in any direction (which you see in Shadow Rising with them). Now, I am only through book four and can only comment on what I have read but from this point, the only thing Nynaeve has going for her is her strength of the One Power (which she can't use unless she's mad). You do see her fight off one of the forsaken in Shadow Rising which was a huge point for her in my head. Shadow Rising was a good one for Nynaeve and Mat.

Lan has always been a fave for me. Doesn't say much but he has that lovable Aragorn feel.

We will see going forward, well you guys already know what happens lol so feel free to tell me if I am full of crap ;)
